Trope Definition

  • Brick Joke: Not about humor. Plot related. A minor, insignificant, or seemingly concluded event occurs, and the viewer is meant to think it over and done with. The event then recurs much later on to effect the plot in an unexpected way.

Chekhov's Gag pays off twice (once at first, and again later). Brick Joke pays off once (later).

  • The "Joke" part of the title leads to confusion with Chekhov's Gag. Many of the wicks and examples (if not most) are bad.
  • The Joke it's named after is only arguably an example of the trope, and only furthers the confusion with Chekhov's Gag.
  • It's been sent to the trope repair shop 4 times.
