* AdaptationDisplacement: The film is iconic as one of the earliest Universal horror films and a groundbreaker in the horror genre, while many viewers don't even know about the existence of the 1909 novel until they've already seen the film. The Broadway musical has displaced the film itself somewhat, though.
* FirstInstallmentWins: When it comes to the Universal Phantom films, this is the one that everyone remembers, even with Claude Rains's 1943 Phantom officially ranked as part of the classic Universal Monster lineup.
* ItWasHisSled: Everyone who has ever so much as Googled the film knows what the Phantom looks like, which makes it a bit hard to realize how shocking he would have been to a new audience.
* SignatureScene: Christine's shocking unmasking of the Phantom is one of the most famous scenes in all of silent film.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Creator/LonChaney was known for his effort that he put on his makeup, and this film was no exception. To say nothing of his ability to emote so flawlessly underneath all that makeup ''and'' without the aid of sound. The shots and shadows used in the film still hold up extremely well today.
