* AudienceAlienatingPremise: This is what doomed the show from the start. It's a SpiritualAntithesis to ''WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill'', a show that works because the deeply conservative regions of the UsefulNotes/UnitedStates are well known in other areas of the continent and even the world (it’s why so many {{Eagleland}} stereotypes are based on these regions) and those living in those regions are more flattered than anything to have a well-written sitcom set in the area. ''The Goode Family'', on the other hand, is set in the strongly liberal [[UsefulNotes/SanFrancisco Bay Area]], whose culture (both then and to some extent now) is much more obscure and whose people felt insulted because unlike ''King of the Hill'', this show is [[StrawmanPolitical nothing but scathing towards the culture it depicts]]. As such, the humor and satire in ''The Goode Family'' was too surreal and incomprehensible for most viewers, with the only people who it'd appeal too being those familiar with the setting, or one similar to it, and either despise the area or can take a joke at their expense. It was yanked off the air as soon as its first season finished. Being put in a FridayNightDeathSlot didn't help either.
* CultClassic: Though nowhere near the level of Mike Judge's other shows, it did gain a small but dedicated fanbase once all of the episodes were available to watch in chronological order.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
-->'''Ubuntu:''' I like you.\
'''Tanya:''' I heard you on the radio. I'm not scared of you anymore.\
'''Ubuntu:''' Dance with me?\
'''Tanya:''' I'd like that.
* SlowPacedBeginning: Most fans would agree that the pilot does a less-than-satisfactory job in setting up the show's overall humor and tone, both of which vastly improve in the episodes that follow.
* SoOkayItsAverage: Even with its questionable socio-political humor, most viewers simply felt the show wasn't funny or interesting enough to justify it, resulting in its swift cancellation.
* SpiritualAntithesis: To Mike Judge's other show. ''WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill''. Whereas The Goode Family takes place in the western part of the United States and shows the negative lifestyle of left-wing liberals, [=KotH=] takes place down south and shows the positives of conservatism.
* {{Squick}}: Gutterball, Charlie's grotesque pet. Heck, his entire species is this.
* {{Tearjerker}}: In episode 6, where Gerald briefly abandons his family to undertake a misguided cause.
-->'''Ubuntu:''' You can't leave! Who am I gonna open jars for?!
* UnintentionallySympathetic: As mentioned above, part of the show's problem was that the Goodes are fundamentally decent people. While it's true that they're a little overbearing and self-righteous, they genuinely want to do right by other people and the world at large, which makes the show's harsh criticisms of them feel disproportionate. This is especially evident with [[NiceGuy Gerald,]] whose kind, warm-hearted personality is at odds with how all the humor directed at him is so bitter and nasty. Unlike with Hank Hill, who has flaws but is portrayed sympathetically for the most part, it seems like the show's creators genuinely despise Gerald and have nothing but ill will for him despite him not really doing anything to warrant such intense scorn. That aside, they way they treat their dog Che by making him Vegan is abhorrent.
* VindicatedByHistory: A fanbase for the show has been steadily growing in recent years (thanks to being available on streaming), with some even saying that the satire on PoliticalOvercorrectness was a lot sharper and much better than most gave it credit for.
* TheWoobie:
** Poor, poor Che, who has to sneak out at night in order to eat meat and survive.
** Ubuntu, [[FridgeHorror if you think really hard about his parents' explanation of his origin story]]. His parents assumed that since he was a white South African, his blood parents were terrible people, and they resolved to prove that, with conscientious parenting, they could undo his blood parents' evil and make him a functioning member of society. It's ''extremely'' unlikely that his parents' parenting style won’t leave Ubuntu with extreme self-image issues and feelings of self-loathing.
** The other pet owners in the Goodes' neighborhood. Che has to eat their pets in order to survive.
