* BadassDecay: Poor Colby. He was unable to live up to his performance in Australia, where he set several challenge records that still stand. He knows, his teammates know and he isn't happy about it.
* DesignatedHero: A few of the heroes come across as this. Some of them were assigned to the hero role because they were compared to people worse than them in their respective seasons, but they look bad when compared to similar heroes. Standouts include James, who was angry and aggressive a lot, and Candice who defected to the Villains side. The latter, though, is treated as a FaceHeelTurn by the remaining heroes.
* DesignatedVillain: Sandra: She may be hot-tempered and potty-mouthed, but nothing she did on her first season really justified her being placed on the Villains tribe. The fact that she was the mortal enemy of one of the show's most hated villains ever (Jonny Fairplay) should have made her a Hero by itself, and that's not even taking into account how Rupert (who also played this season on the Heroes' side) was one of Sandra's closest allies on Pearl Islands and happily voted for her to win back then. Lampshaded by her when she states she should be with the Heroes, and tries repeatedly (and unsuccessfully) to join their alliance and warn them of each of Russel's plans.
** Though perhaps her status as a villain could come from her willingness to backstab anybody, including her close friends. Seen best when, in her original season, she threw out all of the tribe's fish after Rupert got voted out, and then had no problem letting her best friend, Christa, be blamed for it.
*** Or possibly from the DVD commentary of Pearl Islands, where she revealed that she and Christa were planning to set the shelter on fire, and to throw a snake at Johnny.
*** Sandra does have a KickTheDog moment in the first challenge, when she unhooks Sugar's top, which is lampshaded by Cirie as establishing Sandra's villain status.
** A few of the villains in general can be this (such as Rob, Jerri, and Coach) because they've mellowed out and are much nicer this time around.
* NeverLiveItDown: J.T giving Russell his idol - the very same idol that would cause his elimination.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap:
** Jerri, for generally being more pleasant. She finally ended up VindicatedByHistory when people realized she wasn’t even that bad on her previous two seasons, especially All-Stars. Which is all she really wanted in the first place.
** Coach, for not being a SpotlightStealingSquad this time around and being played sheerly for comic relief whenever possible.
** Danielle to some extent, going from the villain that eliminated Terry, to TheWoobie who got backstabbed by Russell where it hurt.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Some people ended up rooting for the Villain Tribe - if only because some TookALevelInKindness while some of the Heroes also TookALevelInJerkass, and were actively trying to take down the BigBad Russell while the Heroes played into his hands. Hell, some of the Villains felt more like Heroes than the Heroes themselves!
