* AccidentalInnuendo: At one point, King Koo-Koo says Andy "[[HoYay makes (him) expand real good]]".
* AlternateAesopInterpretation: The scene with the Greedy obviously teaches viewers not to be greedy or gluttonous. However, there are two other morals you can get based on how uncomfortable the heroes are around him:
** First is your typical "stranger danger" message. Raggedy Ann, Andy, and the Camel realize that the Greedy is getting aggressive and clingy, and realize that they have to escape. Strangers often can do terrible things to you, and it's often best to stay away, even if they seem polite or friendly. This comes up again when the heroes meet Sir Leonard Loony, who they are also clearly afraid of.
*** And furthermore with Loony, it treats the pranks and harassment he gives the dolls as unacceptable even if he claims he's doing it out of affection, showing if someone keeps making you uncomfortable even if they say they love you or doing it for your own good does not have your best interest in mind and it's okay to set your boundaries against such people.
** Similarly, the scene teaches that you don't always have to help people. The heroes are usually very polite: they listen to the Greedy's tale of woe, and then the Greedy insists that they ''have'' to help them. Raggedy Ann politely explains that they'd like to help him, but they can't. Ann feels bad for the Greedy because she has a good heart, but she realizes that she has to look out for herself and her friends too. Conversely, do ''not'' take advantage of nice people. They may want to help you, but they are not obligated to do so, and if you always expect them to do so, you'll most likely end up hurting them or making them angry. And as Raggedy Ann and Andy show, even nice people [[BewareTheNiceOnes can fight back]].
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: The Camel is almost universally interpreted as being suicidal and the caravan he's dreaming about is a metaphor for death.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtOQ-U-y7HA The entire soundtrack]]. It goes from whimsical symphonies to surreal ragtime to melancholic country. Standouts include "I Never Get Enough", "Blue", and "Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers".
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: In many ways, the whole movie is this outside of the toy room until it resumes the Babette rescue plot point and the Looney Land subplot to an extent, but the encounter with the Greedy particularly stands out. It comes out of nowhere, the surreal even by the movie's standards elements clashing with the rest of the film's bizarre yet toy-focused elements, and only comes up again when Raggedy Ann thanks the camel for saving her life. It's also one of two scenes (the other being the joke kingdom) with no backgrounds, depicting the characters in pitch-black negative space, and unlike the Looney Land, it has no further influence on the plot. Coincidentally, numerous executives allegedly viewed the sequence as extraneous and attempted to cut it during production, only for Richard Williams to (successfully) lobby for its reinstatement due to the [[DoingItForTheArt volume of effort sunk into the scene's animation]].
* CultClassic: Was a BoxOfficeBomb and received mixed-to-negative reviews upon release, and remains divisive among those who've been able to see it at festivals or online. However, it's still reasonably popular among animation fans for a number of standout scenes and... ''[[MindScrew unique]]'' story. In TheNewTens and [[TheNewTwenties New '20s]], many new viewers began to praise Creator/DidiConn's sweet and soft-spoken performance as Ann.
* EnsembleDarkHorse:
** The Greedy. He only gets [[OneSceneWonder one scene]] which is mostly just a WackyWaysideTribe, but that single scene is so [[SurrealHorror bizarrely terrifying]] and [[AnimationBump gorgeously animated]] that he's the single most memorable character in the movie to many.
** Sir Leonard Looney is also very memorable thanks in large part to Alan Sues' vocal performance making him a near-perfect mix of hilarious and terrifying.
* EstrogenBrigade: If you can believe it, Andy [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu_NLh2u3tI seems to have developed one]]. His cute voice and snarky JerkWithAHeartOfGold attitude probably help.
* FanPreferredCouple: Raggedy Ann and Babette have gained popularity as a couple as of late, often ignoring the fact that Babette ends up with the Captain.
* FridgeBrilliance:
** During King Koo Koo's VillainSong, the entire scene is black, with nothing but a single spotlight on Koo Koo the entire time. This symbolizes how Koo Koo is so focused on his own problems that he doesn't care about anyone or anything else.
** The Greedy can't understand why, despite his constant gorging, he's always hungry. But then you realize that everything he ''does'' eat ends up right back outside of his body, since he's all one giant blob of taffy. He's never full because the "external" entities he attempts to devour to sate his insecurities are merely products of "himself" (or, symbolically, his projections), thus reducing his attempts at legitimate emotional change to a (literal) self-devouring cycle continuously reinforcing his insularity and loneliness.
** There's a bit of RuleOfSymbolism at play with Babette and the other toys in the playroom, which partially explains why she's so different than them. The original group of toys are all made of fabric, wood, and other non-destructible materials, and Susie Pincushion and Maxi Fix-It are able to repair any damage that they take; Anne herself even comments that, as Marcella's favorite toy, she "gets bounced around a bit" because the girl carries her everywhere and, like most young children, plays rough. By contrast, Babette is a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisque_doll bisque doll]] made entirely of porcelain, which is far more fragile and difficult to repair than any of the other toys. Not only does this reflect the fact that Marcella is growing up and can be trusted to own such a delicate doll, it also suggests that Babette ''wasn't built to be played with.'' No wonder she feels so alienated from the rest of the group--she's literally not made for the same purpose as them!
* SugarWiki/{{Funny Moment|s}}:
** In the middle of The Deep Deep Woods scene, [[DeadpanSnarker Andy]] looks at the audience and says, [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall without a hint of irony]], "This is really weird."
** Near the end of the Camel's melancholy "Blue" song, Ann and Andy randomly dance along with ''smiles on their faces''.
* GeniusBonus: Raggedy Ann's IAmSong, "I'm Just A Rag Dolly"? Even cleverer if you recognize the musical genre as ''ragtime''.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** The pirate who King Koo-Koo says "And fire him!" to looks remarkably like [[Literature/WheresWally Waldo]].
** A world where toys come to life in their owner's room whenever they're absent, the arrival of a new toy setting the plot in motion, and two toys having to deal with the world outside their owner's room sounds awfully like [[WesternAnimation/ToyStory1 a certain other animated film]] released 18 years later.
* JerkassWoobie:
** As horrifying and scary The Greedy is, his song presents him in a rather tragic light. He's so lonely and miserable that he ''can't stop eating!''
--->'''The Greedy:''' I can't stop eating...and I'm...I'm never satisfied...and I'm never...''happy''...happy inside...
** King Koo Koo, whose Napoleon Complex and inability to remain as big as he wants to turn him into a tyrant due to the absurd conditions it requires, which would be normally evil on its own but he's constantly jeered by his own subjects for his height and it's heavily implied it was always the case, even before he turned almost all of them into crazed toys, so he's at least pitiful.
** Babette's painted out to be a selfish jerk because of her desire to return to Paris, but considering that she was genuinely depressed at being forcibly taken from there to be Marcella's birthday present, it's easy to feel sympathetic for her. It's especially sad because she's a bisque doll, which makes her far more delicate than all of the other toys--Marcella probably won't be able to play with her except under special circumstances, and Babette herself won't be able to join the other playroom residents in their games or dancing because she has to be extremely careful not to break.
* JustHereForGodzilla: For many years, the only ones who remembered that this movie even existed were Creator/RichardWilliams fans, who usually had nothing good to say about it outside of [[SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome the animation]]. In TheNewTens and [[TheNewTwenties New '20s]], however, the movie became more of a CultClassic, in part due to MemeticMutation.
* [[HoYay Les Yay]]: Some fans believe that Ann's admiration of Babette is [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=303wjF8gluU a little more than platonic]].
* LGBTFanbase: If the comments on some uploads of "No Girls Toy" are to be believed, it and Andy himself are rather popular among transmasculine people and gay men, both of whom relate heavily to Andy's desire to be taken seriously as a "real man" in an environment that he feels is pressuring/expecting him to act more feminine.
* MemeticMolester:
** The pirate captain, due to looking a little ''too'' excited when he sees Babette.
** Sir Leonard Looney's interactions with the rag siblings are often seen as this, with the way he harasses them while [[TheHyena constantly laughing]] like a deranged clown. The fact that his song is titled "[[{{Yandere}} Because I Love You]]" doesn't help matters.
* MemeticMutation: Andy's line "I'll tell ya something, I'm getting pretty sick and tired of all the dumb things that go on around here!" is often cited as a reaction to [[MindScrew the movie itself]].
* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: Raggedy Ann standing up to the Greedy when he tries to eat her candy heart, smacking his hand away with an oar, followed by a chase scene that plays like a successful video game boss battle.
-->'''Raggedy Ann:''' (''without a hint of fear in her voice'') It seems to me, Mr. Greedy, that you've had ''quite enough'' already!
* OlderThanTheyThink: Reviewers often comment on the "weirdness" and "trippiness" of the film's plot and characters, but in fact it quite closely follows the original ''Literature/RaggedyAnn'' author Johnny Gruelle's 1924 book ''[[http://www.amazon.com/Raggedy-Andy-Camel-Wrinkled-Knees/dp/0689857756/ref=pd_cp_b_0 Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees]].'' Quoting the book's plot summary:
-->"When the French doll Babette is snatched, Raggedy Ann and Andy give up thinking 'nice, kindly thoughts,' and take off in pursuit. Having gathered up a worn toy camel and other helpers, taken a side trip into 'Loonie Land,' and effected several rescues, the button-eyed band battle a pirate crew..."
** Despite this, the infamous Greedy character is completely original to the movie and the pirates are very different from the original story: [[spoiler: they all turn out to be little girls in disguise!]]
* OneSceneWonder: The Greedy, ''again''. Most people who saw the movie remember the Greedy most strongly, who is the prime reason this film is classified as DerangedAnimation.
* {{Padding}}: One of the biggest criticisms of the film is its snail-like pacing.
** Not only does every single scene have a song, but each song is full-length (three verses, three choruses and a bridge) as opposed to the three or four short, two-verse songs typical of other {{animated musical}}s.
** Even the narrative scenes suffer from Richard Williams' notorious refusal to cut or shorten scenes just for the sake of having ''more'' awesome animation. One of Williams's colleagues even admitted that The Greedy sequence went on too long, but Williams was adamant about leaving all of it in because his team had worked so hard to get it right.
* TheScrappy: You ''will'' have [[AccidentalNightmareFuel a very hard time]] liking the naked twin singing dolls. That is a fact.
* SignatureScene: The Greedy Encounter. Not only is it beautifully animated, but it essentially encapsulates the story's [[DerangedAnimation very surreal and weird aspects]].
* SoBadItsGood: The film has a LOT of problems, from incredibly inconsistent pacing to a forgettable story to the animation quality getting incredibly low at times. In the end, though it is less "bad" and more "weird" to many people. The plot is simple, but takes so many [[DerangedAnimation bizarre]], [[RandomEventsPlot random detours]] that it's hard to appreciate in any way other than bemused confusion.
* SoOkayItsAverage: The film is described fondly by those who worked on it, many of whom have become big names in the industry (such as Tom Sito and Eric Goldberg, to name a few), as an "animator's film"; ie, a film you more "appreciate" than enjoy. While generally considered a mediocre film on its own, it boasts a talented crew and some impressive artwork that simply can't go unappreciated.
* {{Squick}}: The Greedy is quite disgusting in general, the way he keeps eating so messily and loudly. The fact that he's a BlobMonster who is perpetually melting and bubbling doesn't help, nor does the fact that he's eating food emanating ''from his own body''. After watching the Greedy segment, you may find it hard to eat too much food again.
* StrangledByTheRedString: Babette and the Captain. The Captain falls in love with Babette at first sight and kidnaps her while Babette never shows any sign of returning the feelings and even rebukes him for his actions when she takes over his ship. When the toys are all brought back to the nursery, the Captain once again proclaims his love for Babette and she suddenly returns her feelings for the Captain and they start dating.
* SugarWiki/SweetDreamsFuel: The "Candy Hearts And Paper Flowers" scene, as the lyrics describe an undying affection from someone close to you during harsh times, which some may find encouraging and comforting to listen to.
* TearJerker:
** The song [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAJ4pMLXRTA "Blue"]].
** Bizarrely enough, the ''Greedy's'' song is actually kind of sad [[FridgeHorror if you think about it]]. His life revolves around eating all the time and he has all of the most delicious and delectable meals to gorge on at his leisure... and he can't enjoy any of it because he doesn't have a "sweetheart", making him feel empty even as he devours and absorbs everything in sight. And it's implied that he ''doesn't even understand why he feels this way''.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Babette is painted as a somewhat antagonistic figure...for making it out of her submissive damsel position, making it as a successful and respected pirate captain with a faithful crew. Besides [[ValuesDissonance the dated idea of a woman leader being irresponsible]], it is also frustrating to think of the things this character could've accomplished if outside forces hadn't blown her back to where she started. At least she went backward with a boyfriend...
* TransAudienceInterpretation: As noted in LGBTFanbase, Andy's struggle to be taken seriously as a man in an environment that he feels is trying to make him act more feminine has led some viewers to interpret him as a trans man.
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: Made in 1976, the film includes plenty of random "patriotic" stars-and-stripes patterns as part of its SceneryPorn - probably a nod to the U.S. Bicentennial that year. Otherwise, the movie avoids this trope.
* UnintentionalUncannyValley: While it is beautifully animated, some of the animations of the characters get a little too hyper-realistic, unintentionally and in some cases, intentionally.
** The twin dolls with the very realistic faces and [[CreepyHighPitchedVoice squeaky voices]], come across as much creepier than intended.
** Babitte's very large eyes and prominent lips on an otherwise ordinary-looking doll give her an unintentionally eerie look.
** The Greedy, starts off cartoonish enough if understandably creepy in appearance, but he gradually becomes more humanoid in appearance as the song continues culminating in a look that looks uncomfortably human in appearance while being exaggerated in the worst aspects such as bulging eyes.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: As surreal as the scene is, take a look at the sequence involving the Greedy. Now try to remind yourself that that whole scene was done ''on paper''.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: The story is simple enough, but when you have [[SomethingElseAlsoRises a perverted pirate]], [[EldritchLocation bizarre landscapes]], [[TheEeyore a suicidally-depressed camel]], and [[BlobMonster a constantly shifting candy-monster that is suffering from depression- resorting to misguided violence to get what he wants]], more children would be scared of this than be running to see it
* TheWoobie: Poor Camel. He was already a toy that had seen better days, but had an owner called Sam that did love him and he appreciated that but then the boy's unkind mother tossed Camel away, so Camel became alone until he met Rageddy Ann and Andy. Not only was he extremely melancholic but he would suffer from hallucinations of his family in the sky and desired to join them in death. It's very heartwarming when he finally is allowed to stay at home with his new friends, Ann and Andy, after enduring the sheer hellish experience of the Greedy and King Koo Koo.
** King Koo Koo's subjects have been transformed into weird robots and lost their minds by being forced to laugh along with him and participate in the insanity that is Loony Land.
