* BrokenBase: Critics and her fandom are at constant odds over the reinvention of Mylène's image every couple albums, much like {{Music/Madonna}}. While some love the idea of her trying new styles, it had caused a few cases of TheyChangedItNowItSucks in some, while albums that were purposely made to be like her classic works caused some cases of ItsTheSameNowItSucks in others.
** "Monkey Me" (2012) is her most divisive album, from the outdated production to the uniform and uncreative voicework to the aggressive arrangements, everything is subject to debate. The fact that the album comes after the refreshing "Bleu Noir" and marks the return of Laurent Boutonnat caused some tensions between fans, with some songs very often cited as her worsts ("A l'Ombre", "Love Dance" and "Ici-Bas" notably). Others point out the efficacity of the compositions, the synergy between Farmer and Boutonnat and the songwriting quality. Also, while the detractors might recognize there's some good in the album ("Nuit d'Hiver", the title song and "Je te dis tout"), the pros are also prone to understood the opus's problems. A thing everyone seems to agrees on : The booklet is the ugliest of her whole career.
** It is generally admitted that the albums Anamorphosée and Avant que l'Ombre splitted the fandom the most, both in different ways, the first for being too violent of a musical reinvention for her after L'Autre, and the second for being too long and not "catchy" enough, altough the album was later VindicatedByHistory.
** Let's not even touch the subject of the albums who weren't composed by Laurent Boutonnat (namely Bleu Noir, Interstellaires and Désobéissance) which provoked FanDiscontinuity for some. Averted big time with "L'Emprise" which caused the reverse effect with fans admitting Woodkid reached Boutonnat's alchemy with Mylène.
** Her duet with Music/{{Seal}}, "Les mots". Mylene fans generally love it, but Seal's don't. WordOfGod claims that's why he rarely participates in duets anymore. Just look at the quote on his trope page!
*** Still it was one of the most successful bilingual duets of all time.
* CreatorWorship: Laurent Boutonnat is deeply respected as the genius composer of the first six albums and treated as an untouchable legend by fans. He's however more and more contested in recent years notably following 2010's "Bleu Noir".
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** "Sans Logique" is a little-known single in her whole 35-year career. Ask any fan which of her songs they want the most in the next tour. She sang it thirty years after her first Tour in the 2019 Arena show.
** "Dessine-moi un Mouton", notably (and weirdly) among non-fans.
** The song "Avant que l'Ombre..." which leaded to its inclusion in her 2011 Best-Of even if it was only a live single. It was already one of the most liked song of the eponymous album, but the live performance sealed the legendary status of this song among fans.
** The song "Histoires de Fesses" was a fan favourite of the Désobéissance album but it was only 1'57''. Mylene and Feder loved it too, apparently, and the song had an extended on the album's second edition.
** The band Archive's work on the album Bleu Noir is often considered the best musical collaboration of Mylène after Boutonnat and some people even wished they did a whole album together. The fandom was in awe when Mylène worked again with them in 2022 on "L'Emprise".
* FanonDiscontinuity: The "Plus Grandir" Best-Of.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff:
** She is phenomenally popular in Russia to the point that on almost any video of her on Youtube you can find more comments in Russian than in her own language.
** Music/EltonJohn, Music/LadyGaga, Creator/GeorgeClooney, Music/{{Muse}}, Music/{{Moby}} and Music/{{Madonna}} have all stated to be big fans of her.
* HilariousInHindsight : The music video for "Des Larmes" was published days after Game Of Thrones' episode "The Last of the Starks" where the hero Jon Snow says goodbye to his direwolf without petting him. In this video, Mylene hugs a white wolf (in fact a white swiss shepherd) who looks just like Ghost, which brings amused comments under the video.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks/ TheyChangedItNowItSucks: see BrokenBase
* NeverLiveItDown: She is known as "That woman who cries while singing" and if someone imitates her, you can be sure he'll sing "Rêver" and fake crying.
** Some people still view her as "That girl who was naked in that Libertine video".
** Speaking of the Libertine Music Video, her recent music videos are often panned for not being up to the standards of her past super-productions.
* NightmareFuel: As a singer who has been described as being obsessed with death it's really no surprise that she falls into this. Some of her early works got quite gruesome:
** "Plus Grandir" features decidedly horror imagery mixed with religious imagery. Things such as rape and death as well as an evil doll can be quite creepy.
** The video for "Libertine" is fairly tame up till the end when Libertine and her rival (played by Sophie Tellier) are fighting each other to the point where both are very visibly bleeding.
** The sequel to the above song "Pourvu Qu'elles Soient Douces" is even more violent especially after Libertine's rival ambushes the camp of the army who have saved Libertine.
* TheScrappy: The song "Sois Moi - Be Me" from the 2001.2011 best-of is widely considered her absolute low point. Any bad song after this one is often called "Be me 2" or "The New Be Me" by the fandom, which happened for the 2012 song "Love Dance" (which is however way more liked than "Sois moi - Be Me").
** RedOne's participation to the Bleu Noir album is often considered dispensable at best. The common saying that the record company obliged the collaboration for commercial purposes didn't helped at all, and the Lady Gaga-esque music video for "Oui mais... non" is reviled among the fans as one of her worst.
** Moby's participation to "L'Emprise" seems to get this treatment too.
** Very few fans want to hear about the 2021 best-of "Plus Grandir", an "unofficial" best-of by the studio who own the rights of the first four albums of her career, in a poor effort to rival the successful best-of "Histoires De". All the conditions were in place to anger fans: Hideous cover, redundant content, multiple versions to (artificially) attract collectors, and above all, the apparent lack of Mylène's approval.
*** Inverted with the 2022 compilation "Mylène Farmer Collection" : Better content, better cover, better format, better new content, only the price make this 16-discs bundle quite inaccessible to the public.
* SignatureSong: "Desenchantee", "Sans Contrefaçon", "Ainsi Soit Je", "Pourvu Quelles Soient Douces", "Libertine", "Je T'aime Melancolie","XXL", "California", "Rever", "Je Te Rends Ton Amour", "Les Mots" and "C'est Une Belle Journee"
* TearJerker: Almost deserves a full page :
** The most notable example in her whole career is "Rêver", a song about tolerance and the fragility of living together as a society and despair of not being able to love each other, with the word "Love" itself being a dream, a faraway hope. It's devastating how bluntly she puts it and the song seems to mean a lot to her since she's cring '''every single time''' when she sings it live.
** "Ainsi Soit-Je" is probably her saddest and darkest song. "What hope can I have when all is dark ?".
** "Désenchantée", her absolute biggest hit, is a desperate song about being alone and lost, "looking for a soul who can help", "If I have to fall from high, may my fall be slow"... but it's so catchy !
** Speaking of catchy but sad, "Je t'aime Mélancolie" takes the cake, with its "Long acid suicide" and "I'm so lucky, I'm in silent pain". Try not to dance. Just try.
** The songs "Laisse Le Vent Emporter Tout" and "Pas le temps de Vivre" are explicitely about the loss of her brother.
** Mylène Farmer have at least one song from each album that can be a strong contender for the saddest song ever and her voice really underlines emotion in every song.
** The song "Avant que l'Ombre..." is probably the bluntest song about fear of death - a recurring theme in Farmer's career - and also fear of '''pain''' and it's just so sincerely put in words, one cannot stays indifferent. The voice is so pure that the breath of Mylène can be heard between each and every verse except the very end when she howls with what can be heard as crys of pain, with apocalyptic music from Boutonnat. It's an absolute musical masterpiece and the apex of tearjerkers in Mylène Farmer's career.
** She's well known for singing death and suicide with catchy rythms ("C'est une Belle Journée", "Paradis Inanimé")
** Her most recent song, "L'âme dans l'eau", is about loved ones, loss and how to deal with it.
* ValuesResonance: "Sans Contrefaçon" is a huge hit in France, and one of the most endearing song about gender identity. Date of release : 1988. She also slips "Qu'on soit Paul en Pauline" ("Should we be Paul in Pauline") in her 1995 hit "XXL", a song about every kind of women - including trans ones. In ''1995''.
** While best known for its sodomy thematic, "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces" also played on gender identity and implied (notably in the video clip) that the man practicing sodomy don't care if it's with men or women.
** "F**k Them All" was basically "Men are Trash" in 2005, way before the emergence of new-wave feminism movement.
* ViewerGenderConfusion:
** She dressed like a boy and had her hair short growing up. Specifically what "Sans contrefacon" is about.
** The character she plays, Libertine in the titular video and it sequel, "Pourvu quelles soient douces". Two characters even have an argument over that in the latter video.
* VindicatedByHistory: When it was released, the 2005 album "Avant que l'Ombre..." was panned by fans who saw it as too long, not catchy enough and slow. Nowadays, it found its defensors, with many recognizing the album aged really well and some even calling it the most beautiful album in her career, and being a true avant-garde album. "Avant que l'Ombre..." tend to be included with the "classics" albums (From "Cendres de Lune" to "Innamoramento") nowadays.
** The base-breaking 2012 album "Monkey Me" found a new youth and appreciation in 2021 with the release of the instrumental album (along with the other 1999-2015 studio albums) with many praising Boutonnat's work on the opus which was deemed as "outdated" at the time.
* WinBackTheCrowd: Her 2022 album "L'Emprise" seemed to have this effect on the fandom with very few fans having a beef with it and most people being very satisfied with Woodkid's work and the overall quality of the album.
