!!The Video Game
* AluminumChristmasTrees: The "Deck of 52" in the first game is based on the real [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most-wanted_Iraqi_playing_cards deck of playing cards]] used in the Second Iraq War to help soldiers identify the most wanted members of then President Saddam Hussein's government.
* AnnoyingVideoGameHelper:
** In the second game, Fiona can approach this if you decide to wander around aimlessly without really doing anything.
** Coming too close to even a 'friendly' faction commander will cause him to negate that disguise, sometimes at inopportune times.
* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: Mattias was always the most-visible of the mercs, to the point where he's front-and-center in the box art. But in the sequel, he becomes mandatory due to healing faster than the other two.
* CompleteMonster: ''Playground of Destruction'': [[TheGeneralissimo General Choi Song]], the son of North Korean President Choi Kim, is a vicious nationalist and terrorist. Opposing his father's wishes for democracy, Song orchestrates [[TheCoup a bloody coup]] that results in the murders of almost everyone at the peace talks, only sparing his father so he could be tortured for the nuclear launch codes. Sent into hiding by the Allied Nations after it comes to light that he was in possession of nuclear missiles, Song proceeds to ruthlessly terrorize both his own country and surrounding Asia, including having his forces engage indiscriminately with other factions in populated areas; building more missiles to sell to terrorists; having the streets of Seoul shelled by a supergun; ordering artillery shelling of Chinese territory; construction of a massive supergun with the range to hit Tokyo with radiated shells; and having Yongbyon leveled in an attempt to eliminate new Russian mob boss Josef Yurinov. When finally cornered by [[PlayerCharacter the Mercenary]], Song decides to [[NukeEm launch all of his nuclear missiles at the world]] as a [[TakingYouWithMe spiteful parting gift]], solely blaming the Mercenary for taking away his army and country.
* DemonicSpiders: Tanks. You will rarely get off a shot before they hit ''you'', and if you're in a vehicle, the rocky terrain causes your reticule to bounce all over the place. [[CatharsisFactor But if you manage to hijack one...]]
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Josef in the first game, a Russian straight-shooter who always deals you a fair hand. For the opposite reasons, his temperamental boss Sergei also has fans.
* FranchiseOriginalSin: ''World in Flames''. There were good and bad things about it: bad in that minor gripes from the last game--bugs, poor AI, last-gen graphics, [[UnintentionalPeriodPiece Bush-era politics]]--are a lot more noticeable in the sequel.
* GameBreaker: Helicopters in general in "[=POD=]". Just being able to zip across the map at blazing speeds with nothing but the occasional Anti-Air emplacement to worry about utterly trivializes just about all of the timed, escort and rescue missions in the game. Even the flimsiest, most lightly armed chopper in the game, the North Korean MD-500, is notable for being able to easily slip into even the most heavily guarded NK locations, thanks to it's disguise. Of particular note are the heavy gunships that become available in the second half of the game, namely the Allied YAH-56, North Korean Mi-25 and Mafia KA-50 which, while difficult to acquire, are utter ''[[LightningBruiser monsters]]'' with ridiculous firepower capable of easily blasting through just about any resistance you'll run into.
* HarsherInHindsight: ''World In Flames'' depicts a Venezuela plunged into a civil war and national power struggle by an [[VillainWithGoodPublicity opportunistic dictator riding on nationalist sentiment]] with considerable contempt for the people he'd be ruling. As of 2017, Venezuela is teetering on the brink of open civil war and societal collapse thanks to U.S. sanctions and the bungled socialist policies of the aloof and dictatorial late-Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro. Worse still, in 2019, the U.S. Government and media were beating the war drums for an invasion of Venezuela for the sake of oil, which was only-narrowly averted due to American antipathy toward regime change and President Trump's receptiveness toward that base.
* MemeticMutation:
** [[VideoGame/GarrysMod ''WHOO! BUMPER CARS!'']]. And contrary to what the videos on Website/YouTube will lead you to believe, no, the voice isn't [[VideoGame/Left4Dead Francis]].
** Most of the funnier lines have gotten a following of their own, but [[MemeticBadass Mattias Nilsson]] has gotten by far the most, particularly his hijacking line of "This is an emergency! ''A Viking emergency!''"
* ObviousBeta: The [=PS2=] version of ''[=PoD=]'' can corrupt your sava data if you save in multiple slots, has a fair amount of slowdown, and the shotgun makes no noise when fired by the player.
%%* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: The series provides many examples of this, most notably the Ace missions from the first game.
* {{Sequelitis}}: ''World in Flames''. The missions lack variety when compared to the flavorful ''[=PoD=]''. Pandemic also made big promises in the lead-up to the game's release (such as being able to pilot any vehicle you see) that they didn't deliver on, which pissed the fans off. The game featured online co-op play, but no local multiplayer. All three characters now behave like Mattias, whereas in the original they each had distinct personalities.
* ThatOneSidequest: The Pirate cargo missions from ''2''. '''All of them'''. Not only are you required to drive a rickety pickup truck laden with various cargo through twisty, uneven roads (the better to make the cargo slosh out) practically infested with hostile vehicles (your truck can take approximately -5 damage before exploding and is easily flipped through collisions and near-miss explosions) and helicopters (see previous parenthetical, add homing missiles) while unarmed, but the majority of the problems would be solved if the player character were simply able to lash a tarp over the truck bed.

!!The 2014 Film
* CompleteMonster: [[PsychoForHire Grigori Babishkov]] is a former [[SerialRapist mass rapist]] and [[BigBad Ulrika]]'s sadistic right-hand man who joined Ulrika to satisfy his bloodlust and sadism. Introduced leading an ambush slaughtering Elise's security detail and capturing Elise, Grigori later taunts a captured Elise by slashing open the throat of a lunch lady who showed kindness towards Elise while sniffing the woman as she bleeds out; when the lunch lady's teen sister was caught breaking in, Grigori had her raped before imprisoning her. Capturing two of the mercenaries, Kat and Mei-Lin, Grigori tortures them in a prison filled with his personal {{sex slave}}s, and when the mercenaries manage to free everyone, Grigori grabs a minigun to gleefully massacre all his captives, even trying to [[AttemptedRape force himself upon Kat]] when she relieves him of his weapon.
* HilariousInHindsight: The film being a mockbuster of ''Film/TheExpendables'' with women is this now the female-centric spinoff ''Expenda-Belles'' that was announced back in 2012 seems to be in DevelopmentHell, meaning The Asylum has beaten that concept to the punch.
