Context YMMV / MartianManhunter

Go To

* CantUnHearIt: Fans tend to hear the voice of Creator/CarlLumbly whenever they are reading J'onn's lines.
* CompleteMonster:
** Benn Blanx. See YMMV/JusticeLeagueOfAmerica.
** ComicBook/MartianManhunter: Ma'alefa'ak J'onzz, aka Malefic, J'onn's twin brother, had his natural psychic powers stripped by his own people due to abusing his telepathic powers, using them to cruelly MindRape J'onzz's wife. Out of petty spite, Malefic engineered a fatal psychic plague among his people, causing whatever Martian that used their psychic powers to horribly burn and die as a result and singlehandedly destroying almost his entire race as a result. Pursuing his brother J'onn to Earth in a single-minded crusade to end his brother's life and complete his genocide, Malefic tried various times to destroy his brother and all those close to him, murdering the partner of his human identity, Karen Smith, and trying to mentally drive his own brother to suicide through a remnant of himself before his final death.
* EnsembleDarkHorse: The guy has a very shaky backstory susceptible to Retcons and Continuity Snarls, has only held two titles in almost seven decades of comics and spends 90% of the time OutOfFocus, yet he is still massively beloved by Justice League fans due to his stoic but polite personality, his insane powerset and having appeared in some of the most beloved Justice League runs as a main character (Namely, ComicBook/JusticeLeagueInternational, ComicBook/JusticeLeagueEurope and ComicBook/JLA1997), and the Ostrander comic is a big CultClassic. His removal from the team brought by ComicBook/TheNew52 was almost universally criticised.
* FashionVictimVillain:
** Both Mr. V (who wore a business suit jacket, a T-shirt, and slacks) and Commander Blanx (in his green and sickly orange get up).
** The Human Flame's oft-mocked costume features what appear to be flaming nipples.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments:
** To meet with Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent in Japan, J'onn utilizes one of his aliases, a female Japanese reporter named Rei Hino. Batman recognizes him anyway, noting in part that the name is a dead giveaway.
** Never get between J'onn and his Chocos. He'll actually HulkOut on your ass. Just ask Booster and Beetle (they went out of their way to deprive J'onn of his cookies in a prank that went horribly, horribly wrong).
--> J'ONN CRUSH!
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoment:
** When Miss Martian's teammates learned she was actually a White Martian, they still came to accept her.
** J'onn might have some doubts in humanity sometimes, but one of the strongest themes throughout his publication is a quiet gratefulness and admiration for the people who have adopted him as their hero. He's died multiple times in canon for the sake of humanity.
** Miss Martian is a kind, gentle, compassionate girl, unlike most of her kind. When she takes the form of a Green Martian to be accepted because of what her people have done, Martian Manhunter finds out, but he accepts her despite their people’s histories which makes it all the more sweeter.
* NewerThanTheyThink:
** Not many people know this, but Mars was fully populated in the Silver Age. The concept of J'onn being the last Martian didn't come until later.
** Likewise, for most of his early existence, his green humanoid form was his true form; it wasn't until the 1988 miniseries by J.M. [=DeMatteis=] that established it as a compromise between his human disguise and his more alien-looking true form to make himself seem less frightening.
* SoBadItsGood: Back in 1959, there was a story in which J'onn J'onzz goes up against a foe called the Human Flame... who was a schlub named Mike who built a "crime suit" that shot electric bolts and fire out of little spouts on the chest. That's right: Flaming Shock-Nipples of Crime! He dropped off the face of the earth for 50 years and was eventually brought back as an IneffectualSympatheticVillain in Final Crisis.
* SpiritualSuccessor: In MediaNotes/OfComicBooks, Jemm: Son Of Saturn was created because the writer wanted to do a story about J'onn and couldn't get editorial permission. ComicBook/PostCrisis, it was established that Jemm's race is a bioengineered offshoot of J'onn's race (and, unlike the Martians, they're still thriving).
