* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Animus. [[spoiler:Was he really a just ManipulativeBastard who only pretended to care for Sonya before finally showing his true colors near the end? Or did he genuinely start BecomingTheMask until an opportunity to regain his original form showed itself?]]
* AntiClimaxBoss: Zash. After being built up as the [[TheHeavy most prominent villain]] apart from [[BigBad Animus]], he's ultimate defeated by a single kick from Lucy and Capricorn before he [[DirtyCoward runs away]]. [[spoiler:He's eventually disintegrated by the Dragon Cry without ever having a single proper fight.]]
* AssPull: The Quartum Army. They're not mentioned beyond a possible nebulous "dark magic" that Zash uses, and appear just in time to make the fight more dangerous for Fairy Tail. The twist? They're ''fourth-generation'' dragon slayers.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: This movie gained immediate infamy for its opening scene, where Lucy seduces a crowd of men dressed as a skimpy belly dancer while Erza shows up as a bunny girl waitress so she can steal something from the guy Lucy's distracting. This one scene is far better known than the actual plot.
* CompleteMonster: [[DragonWithAnAgenda Zash Caine]] was once a wizard of Fiore who fled to Stella after a failed coup. He [[EvilChancellor went into the service]] of [[BigBad King Animus]] and then proceeded to kill his own allies to prove himself. In the movie, Zash uses mind control to force the White Tiger squadron to kill each other in order to steal the Dragon Cry. Zash shows no hesitation in trying to kill the Fairy Tail wizards, and controls {{Innocent Bystander}}s to do so. It is then revealed that Zash keeps female prisoners to [[HumanResources draw blood from]] to power his own magic, and takes Lucy captive in an attempt to draw blood from her. Towards the end, [[spoiler:Zash betrays Animus and takes the Dragon Cry for himself, and proceeds to force Animus to go on a rampage and unseals the Quartum Army to eliminate the Fairy Tail wizards. He then activates the Dragon Cry in an attempt to destroy all of Fiore out of revenge for his exile, only failing when the power proves too much and incinerates him.]]
* ContestedSequel: There is debate on whether this or the first ''Fairy Tail'' movie, ''[[Anime/FairyTailTheMoviePhoenixPriestess Phoenix Priestess]]'', is the better film. Fans of ''Phoenix Priestess'' admire that film's darker tone, animation, design, and the relationship between Lucy and its title character. On the other hand, ''Dragon Cry''[='=]s fans appreciate this film for being more fun like the main series itself, having more interesting and[=/=]or entertaining villains, and keeping the focus more on the main team.
* FridgeBrilliance: [[spoiler:Natsu surviving getting impaled through the chest might seem like a huge AssPull, but it actually seems to hold more water when Animus realizes he is E.N.D., since the Etherious tend to be quite tricky to kill. It also helps that Natsu has blatantly survived other fatal situations that have puzzled his friends and enemies in the past, which include getting shot in the mouth in the Tower of Heaven arc.]]
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Juvia's wild imaginings as usual. There's her idea to make Gray jealous by cuddling up to Gajeel, Pantherlily, and ''[[LesYay Levy]]''.
* HilariousInHindsight: Sometime after the movie aired, ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' introduced another dark-skinned blond (or silver haired more accurately), rabbit-eared and themed fighting girl in the form of Rumi Usagiyama or Mirko that many noted was almost identical to Swan. Humorously, Swan considers herself a Wizard and ''not'' a fighter unlike Mirko.
* JerkassWoobie: [[spoiler:Animus. Sure, he didn't mind wiping out humanity and joined dragons like Zirconis to kill little girls like Sonya, but he genuinely seemed sad to part from her at the end, and like he really wanted to make a go at peace with humans before losing himself to hatred. However, given that his kindness was pretty much only mentioned by Sonya, we won't know just how much of this was genuine.]]
* JustHereForGodzilla: Most viewers watched this movie just for Natsu's and possibly other Dragon Slayers' dragon forms.
* MoralEventHorizon: Zash has pretty much no problems with crossing this in the first few minutes by forcing the White Tiger squadron to kill each other while he watches and seems to ''enjoy it''.
* {{Narm}}: Fairy Tail has always had plenty of {{Fanservice}}, but it's up to eleven here. The jiggling is especially ridiculous when Lucy's boobs bounce when she so much as moves a muscle, and bounces in directions not anatomically possible.
** NarmCharm: Nevertheless, just as many fans appreciate the sight due to it being the most triumphant example of Lucy being TheTease and one of the few cases where she's a successful HeroicSeductress. Her outfit is skimpy yet appropriate for what she's doing, her dancing is well-animated and solidly choreographed, she's in full control of the audience and her body, she's not being harassed mid-dance, the audience respects her enough not to even dare touch her, and she (along with Erza) succeed in getting what they need.
* OneSceneWonder: [[spoiler:Acnologia, Zeref, Invel, and Brandish all appear for about a minute of screentime in TheStinger, yet they own every single second. Helped by the fact that it's essentially a confirmation of the final season of the anime and the coming Alvarez Empire arc.]]
* SignatureScene:
** There's a very high chance the average viewer, even non-fans of Fairy Tail, learned about this film due to numerous animated gifs of Lucy belly dancing on stage while Erza saunters around in a PlayboyBunny suit at the beginning of the film.
** The shot of Natsu dragonizing from the trailers and mostly promoted concept image, even if the dragonized Natsu is only a OneSceneWonder.
** Natsu sharing Stella's gorgeous starfield with Lucy, which was the film's other concept image.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: How many of you wanted Natsu to become a full dragon like his father Igneel in here instead of a PartialTransformation that we got?
* {{Woolseyism}}: While the concept of Juvia's "Gray Sensor" is funny enough, the English dub's decision to call it the "Gray-dar" just brings it to a whole new level of hilarity.
