* AbandonShipping: Jonah/Cyrus had a larger following at the show's debut, since there were fewer recurring characters and [[spoiler: because of Cyrus' [[TransparentCloset behavior around Jonah]].]] As the show progressed, Jonah's RelationshipRevolvingDoor with [[spoiler:Andi and Amber]] and TJ/Cyrus [[FanPreferredCouple becoming more popular]] resulted in fans losing interest.
** [[spoiler:Cyrus admitted that he [[ShipSinking no longer has a crush on Jonah]] in "Keep a Lid on It".]]
** [[spoiler:"One in a Minyan" has Cyrus come out to Jonah, but state separately that he doesn't plan on telling Jonah about his previous feelings for him.]]
* {{Adorkable}}: Cyrus is a sweet, awkward, insecure, neurotic, excitable, intelligent kid who has tendency for humorous [[NoodleIncident Noodle Incidents]] and acts as the others' confidants. Is it any wonder he's the most popular character on the show?
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvrE19o_C7M theme song]]. The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uWcx8YGAzM extended version]] was released as a single on October 20, 2017.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Andi was written to be a good-hearted, endearingly realistic portrayal of a girl her age and situation. Nonetheless, she's been criticized as selfish and belligerent, and at her worst may come across as a [[{{Wangst}} Wangsty]] BrattyTeenageDaughter.
** TJ had been considered unworthy of a redemption arc because of his JerkJock treatment towards Buffy in season 2. [[spoiler:They were able to reconcile, but a number of people were unimpressed with his apology and disappointed that he received [[KarmaHoudini no punishment]] for bullying his teammate.]] His friendlier behavior in season 3 [[spoiler:and ShipTease with Cyrus]] have helped to improve his reputation amongst the fandom.
*** His subplot in "Cookie Monster" and "The New Girls" can be seen as a final step in his HeelFaceTurn, or proof that he's a [[ToxicFriendInfluence bad influence]] and [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk hasn't changed]]. The fact that he's EasilyForgiven is also divisive.
** Marty, for his chemistry with Buffy but [[SatelliteLoveInterest lack of characterization]].
* BrokenBase: Late Season 2, which Disney ordered more episodes of at the last minute. It introduced several new characters and story arcs. Their reception was initially positive, but introducing and establishing them all with only half a season left led to some pacing issues and unresolved conflict.
** A number of fans disliked [[HateSink Morgan and Miranda's]] roles in the show and found their return in "The Ex Factor" to be pointless.
** [[spoiler: [[TheUntwist Most people already knew Buffy would return after moving away]], although she would have come back at the beginning of season 3 without the additional episodes]].
** TJ and Cyrus only getting to hold hands while the show's major straight couple kissed in the series finale naturally got a lot of people upset, with many suspecting ExecutiveMeddling similar to the final scene of ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'', despite all the strides in gay representation that have been seen since then. WordOfGod replied that they didn’t feel the characters were at that place yet, since at their age simply holding hands can feel like as huge a step as kissing, and they didn't want to do it just so they could say they’d done it. They also have confidence that more shows will follow through the door they opened, and are perfectly comfortable letting one of them have the honor of featuring the Disney Channel's first gay kiss.
** Before [[WordOfGod Luke Mullen confirmed TJ is gay and that Terri Minsky told him as such before filming his second ever episode]], there used to be a divide between those who read TJ as gay-coded given his lack of interest in girls (most notably his storyline with Kira) and those who believed he could still be bi. The discourse got quite intense as accusations of homophobia and biphobia were thrown back and forth, but the WordOfGod confirmation that he is gay brought it to an end.
** When people were trying to save the show after its cancellation, there was a small sector of the fandom who didn't want the show to be saved because they were fine with it being over and didn't want the ending to be ruined or for the show to go on forever and eventually stop being good. They started a #dontrenewandimack hashtag and all.
*** Some of the (now former) fans involved in this counter movement have since admitted that they were trying to cope and move on quickly to bury their sadness over the show ending at the time.
* CargoShip:
** Bowie/The universe.
** Cyrus/Chocolate chip muffins.
*** Cyrus/Toast.
** [[TheWoobie Buffy, Cyrus, or TJ]]/Happiness and Jonah/Good Mental Health.
* CrackShip: Due to the GottaShipEmAll nature of the fandom, this is expected.
** Walker/Jonah started as a joke ship with multiple fake Tumblr blogs dedicated to it ''before the two even interacted on screen.'' Despite its joke status, the same week the two actually interacted in canon the ship increased in popularity.
** Reed/Anyone. The most popular being Cyrus/Reed, due to how many people [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation found Reed's behavior towards Cyrus flirtatious.]]
** TJ/Marty is somewhat popular, although TJ has ''zero'' idea who Marty is, to the point where it's PlayedForLaughs in-universe.
*** TJ/Marty/Jonah, affectionately dubbed the 'Dumbass Trio', also has a small following.
** Jonah/'''Bowie''' gets joked about on occasion, but isn't shipped seriously [[{{Squick}} for obvious reasons]]. [[{{Starboarding}} Some do take seriously]] the idea of Jonah having a one-sided PrecociousCrush, though. Asher Angel tends to joke about this a lot, seeing how Jonah is the only one of the main 4 who doesn't have a super popular FanPreferredCouple in the same vein as Amber/Andi, TJ/Cyrus, and Marty/Buffy.
** "Carty" (Cyrus/Marty) became a popular joke ship towards the end of the show's run [[GoodBadBugs due to a glitch with Andi's Texts]][[note]]The show's tie-in game on the [=DisneyNOW=] app and website. The feature shows texts Andi has exchanged with other characters, usually recapping the previous episode and expanding on the characters a little. After the episode "Something to Talk A-Boot" aired, the game glitched and displayed Buffy's texts as being from Cyrus, with 'Cyrus' worrying about his relationship with Marty.[[/note]]. Fans immediately joked that Marty/Buffy and TJ/Cyrus were dead, and that Carty would be the twist endgame after all.
** Walker/Cyrus (or Walrus) was popular for a short time when Walker's actor was credited for ''Cyrus' Bash-Mitzvah'' before the episode aired, leading to speculation over his possible relationship with Cyrus. Made more intense by Joshua Rush, who posted a picture with Darius Marcell (Walker's actor) around this time. As more information was revealed and people found out Walker had more of a relationship with Andi than Cyrus, the ship fell into obscurity.
** Buffy/Amber haves following also despite not interact frequently.
* DieForOurShip:
** '''Kira'''. Most TJ/Cyrus fans lost respect for her after "Mount Rushmore or Less" and "Unloading Zone", where she [[TroubleEntendre was strongly implied to be manipulating TJ]] into [[HeteronormativeCrusader spending time with her instead of Cyrus]]. It didn't take long for [[RevengeFic Revenge Fics]] and jokes about characters getting ExtremeMeleeRevenge to pop up, and [[ButIPlayOneOnTV some fans even issued reminders to leave her actress alone]]. She's gotten far more hate than any other character on the show, and some fans even consider her irredeemable.
** Andi and TJ for Jonah/Cyrus fans. Both of their BaseBreakingCharacter statuses take this even further, with some Andi detractors going as far to characterize her as homophobic in fan works [[spoiler:despite her acceptance and support of Cyrus when he came out to her]].
** Some Marty/Buffy fans subjected Rachel to this as soon as she was first mentioned in "Keep a Lid on It" (''11 months before her on-screen debut'' in "Arts and Inhumanities"). Her ClingyJealousGirl personality and curt attitude towards Buffy didn't do much for her image when she finally did appear.
* EnsembleDarkHorse:
%%** Gus.
%%** [[OneSceneWonder Leo the Locker Boy]].
** Reed, despite being a OneShotCharacter, grew a sizable fanbase due to his [[GRatedStoner infamously spacey attitude]] and general odd persona. A sneak peek from a season 3 trailer led to speculation that he would [[HoYay flirt with Cyrus in some way]] and make TJ jealous, gaining him some popularity before he showed up onscreen. Lester received this treatment on a smaller scale, mostly from fans trying to identify his [[UncreditedRole Uncredited Actor]].
%%** Kaitlin, Buffy's teammate from the Spikes.
** Libby, her relationship with Jonah and over all cute nature made her popular with fans.
* {{Fanon}}:
** A lot of people like to assume that Amber and TJ are siblings despite their sole connection in-universe being [[spoiler:that they're both friends with Cyrus.]]
** Amber has only ever shown attraction to men (mostly Jonah) throughout the show, yet a good majority of the fandom insists that she is a lesbian, with some outright mocking people who headcanon her as anything ''but'' a lesbian.
** Andi, Walker, and Libby all attending SAVA and becoming close friends over their artistic [[CommonalityConnection Commonality Connections]].
** Practically all the characters are headcanoned by the fans to be LGBT in some way or form. The fact that [[spoiler: both Cyrus and TJ are canonically gay]] fuels it even more. To elaborate:
*** Andi (''Pan''di) and Walker would be pansexual.
*** Amber is a lesbian (like stated above) and is possibly suffering from compulsory heterosexuality.
*** Bex, Bowie, Jonah, and Buffy are all bisexual, with Bowie being non-binary sometimes.
*** Around the end of the shows run, Jonah being aromantic became a popular headcanon.
*** Marty is usually depicted as a trans boy.
*** Iris would be a lesbian.
*** And to a lesser extent, Cece would have been stated to have ExperimentedInCollege or something similar.
*** Dr. Metcalf is gay and married to Ricky the bridal salesman.
*** Among a few other headcanons, these are the most common ones that appear in various fanfics.
* FanPreferredCouple:
** Jonah/Cyrus was this during season 1 for their frequent HoYay moments. The ship gained even more ground after TheReveal [[spoiler:that Cyrus is gay and he likes Jonah]].
** As of season 2, TJ/Cyrus, which gained even more supporters after the cast voiced their support of it and [[spoiler:the not-so-ambiguous look back in the Season 2 finale.]] Some fans list this ship as their [[JustHereForGodzilla main reason]] for watching the show, [[MisaimedFandom despite the show being about Andi]].
** Amber/Andi is also very popular and both of their actresses have claimed to be fans themselves.
* FandomRivalry:
** ''Series/GirlMeetsWorld'' and ''Series/LivAndMaddie'' fans believe that this show replaced theirs and think theirs should have received another season instead of this show being picked up.
** Conversely, fans of this series loathe ''Series/GabbyDuranAndTheUnsittables'' for the exact same reasons. And they're also resenting ''[[Series/BunkD Bunk'd]]'' and ''Series/RavensHome'' for getting a season 4 because their show only got three seasons by comparison.
* FriendlyFandoms: With the music artist Music/{{Cavetown}}, of all things - since the song 'Lemon Boy' became a meme in the fandom (detailed below), and with Cyrus's actor, Joshua Rush, [[{{JustForFun/OneOfUs}} also being a Cavetown fan]], you'd be hard pressed to find a long-time Andi Mack fan who doesn't hold some level of affection for his music - especially among the TJ/Cyrus fans.
* GottaShipEmAll: Pick ''any'' combination of these characters. There is someone out there who unironically ships it.
* GrowingTheBeard: Season 2, particularly the second half, saw this. While season 1 was excellent in its own right, it focused mostly on Andi either learning about her lineage or dealing with her feelings towards Jonah while everyone else was relegated to their own B-plots. Season 2 gave the rest of the cast more even screen time and more development without detracting from the protagonist. Some of the plotlines included Buffy [[spoiler:dealing with her mom being deployed]], Amber [[spoiler:trying to change after her father lost his job]], TJ [[spoiler:having a learning disability]], Cyrus [[spoiler:coming to terms with his own sexuality]], Jonah [[spoiler: dealing with anxiety and panic attacks]], and Bowie [[spoiler:getting into a new serious relationship with a single parent]].
* HarsherInHindsight: In "Cyrus' Bash Mitzvah" Cyrus is told that he will go to an Ivy League college but not graduate from one. In 2024 (around the time Cyrus would be in college), Ivy League universities have been garnering a reputation for chasing Jewish students out due to antisemitism. This paints his college experience in a far darker light.
* HoYay:
** When Andi's not upset with her, she's actually pretty good friends with Amber when she decided to let her show her not-so mischievous self.
** When TJ goes to talk things out with Cyrus in "The New Girls." They usually get along, but Cyrus has been (reluctantly) avoiding TJ ever since the ''gun incident''. It's important to note that [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMqB0ANQ0i0&t=3s this exchange occurs as they walk right up to each other.]]
-->'''Cyrus:''' So, you've apologized for not apologizing...but you still haven't apologized.
-->'''TJ:''' You can be a little annoying, you know that?
-->'''Cyrus:''' Well, you can be oblivious.
-->'''TJ:''' Well, you can be very judgy.
-->'''Cyrus:''' Well, you can be intimidating.
-->'''TJ:''' Y'know what else you are?
-->'''Cyrus:''' What?
-->'''TJ:''' The only person I can talk to like this.
* ItWasHisSled: Bex being revealed as Andi's mother instead of her older sister is ''the'' only thing most people know about the show, followed by [[spoiler: Cyrus being gay]].
* JerkassWoobie:
** Amber, for all her AlphaBitch behavior, you can't help but give her sympathy when it's revealed that [[spoiler:her dad lost his job and had been hiding it from his family for months.]]
** It's hard to feel bad for TJ when he's so rude to his teammates, but his [[spoiler:struggles with dyscalculia can be resonant for anyone with a similar condition.]]
* JustHereForGodzilla: Plenty of people tune in just to see Disney Channel's first explicitly gay main character.
* LGBTFanbase: The series has one for its explicitly gay protagonist, especially since LGBT representation is still rare in American children's media.
* MemeticMutation:
** Lemon Boy [[note]]A popular fanfiction lead to the song 'Lemon Boy' by Cavetown to be referred to by shippers as the 'Tyrus Anthem'. As this was one of the earliest fics written for the pairing, during a time before it was popular and when TJ/Cyrus shippers were still very much in the minority, it was well known and therefore influential as one of the very few pieces of (non-canon) content fans of the pairing had. As the song has generally been seen as very fitting, both jokes about and sincere love for it have remained ubiquitous as more and more people have become fans of the ship. [[ApprovalOfGod It's even been acknowledged by Joshua Rush]].[[/note]]
** Clueless Jonah [[note]]Jonah has never been the most astute character in canon, and some fans like to jokingly take this to the extreme, portraying him as completely oblivious to other people's feelings, relationships, and, most frequently, [[spoiler:Cyrus's sexuality]].[[/note]]
*** Golden Retriever [[note]]Jonah has been compared to golden retrievers for his in-universe LovedByAll status, constant optimism, and affinity for frisbee.[[/note]]
** 'Ish' [[note]][[spoiler:TJ's rap]] in the the season two finale was extremely popular, and led to fans replacing the word 'shit' with 'ish' when talking about the show in reference to the lyrics.[[/note]]
** Reed With The Weed [[note]]The promo for "Cookie Monster" had a new character showing Cyrus a bag containing something that scared him. Fans speculated that the bag might be full of drugs. While this turned out to be wrong, the boy’s name was revealed to be Reed and throughout the episode he behaved in a rather spacey way, leading fans to joke that he was high, and earning him a nickname. [[/note]]
** Oh, I get it! Salt! [[note]] Marty's [[DontExplainTheJoke reaction]] to Cyrus' costume in "Mount Rushmore or Less". [[/note]]
** B[redacted]h [[note]] During season 3, Cyrus's actor, Joshua Rush, answered a question on his Tumblr account about his favourite scene in the finale, saying it was the b[redacted]h scene. Most took this to mean 'bench' (and was also immediately assumed to be a TJ/Cyrus scene due to Rush's open support of the pairing), but a few people started suggesting other things that fit - from serious guesses like 'breath', 'beach', or 'birth', to sillier jokes like 'blowfish', 'Bangladesh', or 'Creator/BenedictCumberbatch'. [[/note]]
** Cyrus Is Listening To X[[note]] After the events of "Unloading Zone", many people have joked about Cyrus listening to angsty heartbreak songs. A Spotify [[https://open.spotify.com/playlist/79BzKoGx5FlJe8GDMSefG3 playlist]] was even made out of all the songs.[[/note]]
** TJ breathes and makes someone upset. [[note]]Due to the sheer amount of times TJ – intentionally or not – has upset someone (usually Buffy and Cyrus).[[/note]]
** Everyone is a Kippen. [[note]] Stemming from the popular Kippen Siblings theory, some have taken to headcanon various characters as Kippens, from Reed, to Kip, to even ''Cookie''. The only apparent requirement to be headcanonned as a Kippen is to be blonde or have no canon last name.[[/note]]
** We Reviewin U? [[note]]A fake leak regarding the show's finale with this phrase plastered on the image surfaced onto Tumblr and made it's rounds around the fandom quickly, with the phrase 'We reviewin u?" becoming memetic. [[/note]]
** Tippen Jippen Kippen [[note]]Theories about TJ's name became popular during late season 3, and fans began listing prospective expansions of TJ. The names got sillier with time, eventually leading to names like "Trader Joes Kippen" or "Telejision Kippen".[[/note]]
* NarmCharm: The scene in the finale where [[spoiler: TJ reveals his full name to Cyrus, which leads into them holding hands. It's an otherwise relatively serious scene turned humourous by the fact that TJ's name turns out to be ''Thelonious Jagger'', made even sillier if you notice that 'Thelonious' is also, of all things, a subtle ''WesternAnimation/Shrek1 reference''... but the whole scene is just too sweet to actually laugh at. Plus, the name being so goofy makes Cyrus loving it that much more heartwarming.]]
* NightmareFuel:
** Andi's nightmare in 3x01 is absolutely horrifying.
*** Basically, she dreams of her birth parents finally getting married. But then, she sees Jonah's smiling face plastered onto ''all the wedding guests' faces. Even on Bex and Bowie's faces!'' Jonah's face on the former is especially '''disturbing!'''
** For some, Andi's self portrait in "One Girl's Trash" looks really creepy.
* PeripheryDemographic: Andi Mack has an unusually large young adult following for a Disney Channel show, primarily due to its more mature themes, serialized story telling, and [[JustHereForGodzilla Cyrus Goodman]].
* OneTrueThreesome: Buffy/TJ/Cyrus haves a sizeable fandom mainly because Buffy and Cyrus are best friends and TJ having UST with Cyrus and a kind of BST with Buffy as the three relationship derived of this trio (Buffy/Cyrus, TJ/Cyrus, Buffy/TJ) are popular. They often stated as saving the modern Disney Channel by fans.
** To a much lesser extent Andi/Buffy/Cyrus can count as well.
* PortmanteauCoupleName: Several, most consisting of one letter of a character's name followed by the rest of the other's. The more well known ones include:
** Ciris ('''C'''yrus/'''Iris''') has been used in-series, spoken as "Cyrus-with-an-i" but [[WordOfGod Joshua Rush has stated it appears as Ciris in the scripts]].
** Muffy ('''M'''arty/B'''uffy''') In the second season, Andi jokingly suggests "Barty" which is another, less popular portmanteau.[[note]]Even the actors who play Buffy and Marty, Sofia Wylie and Garren Stitt, have referred to them as "Muffy" on their Twitter and Instagram posts.[[/note]]
** Bexie ('''Bex'''/Bow'''ie''')
** Tyrus ('''T'''J/C'''yrus''')
** Jyrus ('''J'''onah/C'''yrus''')
** Jandi ('''J'''onah/'''Andi''')
** Jamber ('''J'''onah/A'''mber''')
** Ambi ('''Am'''ber/'''Andi''')
* RealismInducedHorror: TheReveal to why Bex left Andi: She and Celia had been fighting nonstop since Andi's birth and it culminated to the point they forgot Andi in the car on a sunny day. Bex is so ashamed of her irresponsibility that she left Andi with Celia, who she felt was more responsible, and didn't return out of fear another fight would put Andi's safety at risk. Leaving children in a hot car is a very real danger and had Ham not gone to check, she could've died resulting in another family tragedy.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap:
** When TJ was first introduced, he was near-universally loathed for his treatment of Buffy and overall JerkJock persona. Once his OddFriendship with Cyrus began to emerge and CharacterDevelopment kicked in, he slowly gained more and more good will from fans, and by the second season's finale, he had become one of the most popular characters on the show.
** Amber was also disliked early on for her treatment of Jonah and Andi. Her HeelFaceTurn in Season 2 won over a lot of fans for her.
* ShipMates:
** A case of this occurred for a few weeks towards the end of season 2. TJ/Cyrus had been gradually rising in popularity, but had not yet completely overthrown Jonah/Cyrus as the FanPreferredCouple. This led to ShipToShipCombat between TJ/Cyrus and Jonah/Cyrus fans. Meanwhile, Marty was seemingly out of the picture, and fans (especially TJ/Cyrus shippers) were concerned that as TJ’s redemption arc went on, it might be setting up him up for a BelligerentSexualTension-style relationship with Buffy. The solution? Juffy (Jonah/Buffy), which became popular overnight with TJ/Cyrus fans as it got both of the TJ/Cyrus rivals out of the way, and was also briefly teased by the show around the same time. However, the announcement of Marty's return concurrent with TJ/Cyrus taking over as show’s new number one ship [[AbandonShipping made Juffy’s popularity disappear almost as quickly as it had risen]].
** Fan works that depict Amber and TJ as siblings usually also have Amber/Andi and TJ/Cyrus together.
* ShipsThatPassInTheNight:
** Jonah/Buffy was once popular (see ShipMates) before they became good friends.
** TJ/Marty [[PortmanteauCoupleName (or Tarty)]] has a good number of fans. TJ doesn't know who Marty is, which has been brought up by both characters.
* ShipToShipCombat:
** Jonah/Cyrus is this for both Jonah/Andi and TJ/Cyrus fans.
** As of "Cyrus' Bash-Mitzvah" we have Walker/Andi vs. Jonah/Andi. Amber/Andi fans joined the battle after "I Got Your Number".
** TJ/Cyrus vs. TJ/Buffy emerged due to the season 2 finale's ambiguous ending, though most of the cast and writers made it clear they preferred the former during the following hiatus.
* SignatureScene: Quite a few, actually:
** Bex revealing to Andi she's her mother, not her sister. And from the first episode, no less! [[FirstEpisodeTwist Then again...]]
** [[spoiler: Cyrus's first coming out scene, in which he reveals to Buffy that he has a crush on Jonah.]]
** Likewise, [[spoiler: Cyrus's third (and final) coming out scene, where he outright tells Jonah he's gay]] pretty much blew up online when it first aired.
** To a lesser extent, [[spoiler: Jonah's]] panic attack at Cyrus's bar mitzvah is quite memorable. Most likely because not only did a character who's naturally calm and collected is shown breaking down for once, but also because this is pretty much the first time the Disney Channel actually depicted a character with a possible canon anxiety disorder in one of their shows. Especially with one that's considered a KidCom.
* TearJerker: Amber confronting Cyrus for lying to her in "Arts and Inhumanities". It was a really hard situation for both Amber and Cyrus. On Amber's side, the one person she trusted kept Jonah's lie rather than telling her the truth. On Cyrus' side, he was in an impossible situation with conflicting loyalties and couldn't help one without hurting the other.
* SuperCouple: Jonah/Cyrus and later TJ/Cyrus.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: All the [[RomanticFalseLead Romantic False Leads]]
** Iris was never going to last with Cyrus after he came out as gay. Nonetheless she and Cyrus still had a good bond as friends and was a likable character in her own right. She never showed up again after Cyrus broke up with her despite the two promising to stay friends.
** Walker had great chemistry with Andi and actually seemed to offer the commitment she was looking for. The writers didn't seem to notice his potential so they bounced him around in different roles before awkwardly writing him out. Even worse is how given his artistic prowess, the writers had the perfect chance to include him when Andi applied to SAVA, yet didn't.
** Libby was an EnsembleDarkhorse and the first girl Jonah seemed like he was going to commit to. They ended up having her dump Jonah offscreen for an unexplained reason. Even though she was friends with Andi too, the show acted like she never even existed after that.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** Jonah never told Andi about his panic attacks ''onscreen'' which felt like a loose end that deserved to be tied up since that's the reason the two got back together in Season 2 and Andi chose him over Walker.
*** There was a text conversation where he tells her, but many felt this wasn't satisfying as not everyone is even aware of Andi's Texts.
** Bex's toxic ex Gabe was meant to make an appearance in season 2, but his scenes were cut and the plot of her needing to work through those issues before being able to marry Bowie was dropped. It is assumed Disney found it too dark or mature, but some felt it was a missed opportunity to give Bex (and the other adults) the depth and more interesting plot lines they initially had and seemingly lacked in the latter half of the show.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Besides the fact that the show's premiere is about the effects of a past TeenPregnancy affecting a family's life, the show also shows more mature themes then one would normally expect from Disney Channel, such as strained family relationships, LGBT themes, toxic/abusive relationships, learning disabilities, anxiety, panic attacks, having a parent in the military, guns, and possibly even mental illness. Yet it still manages to keep a "G" rating despite that.
* TheWoobie:
** Andi. She's barely 13 years old and is the center of tons of familial drama that she didn't start. She's also had to deal with unwanted relationship drama, going from not knowing who her father is to him suddenly being a big part of her life, her family secrets being shared all over town, both sets of parents having their own relationship issues, racist classmates, and self-doubt from application stress, all within a very short amount of time.
** Cyrus, he's a NervousWreck and shows signs of depression. He constantly says self-deprecating things and clearly has low self-esteem. The problem is that most of the time, his friends don’t do much to dissuade this self-deprecation, often actually reinforcing it. They love him but call him helpless and can be quite callous with him. Andi [[LackOfEmpathy doesn't even consider]] Cyrus' feelings as she pursues Jonah (she kisses Jonah in front of him!). When Cyrus claims to not be important when Buffy and Andi are distracted by Jonah, they don't even disagree.
*** This is part of the reason TJ/Cyrus is so loved - TJ has always believed in Cyrus wholeheartedly, encouraging him and constantly letting him know he’s important. He even says to stop telling Cyrus what he can't do, and instead of letting Cyrus wallow in helplessness, TJ pushes him to overcome his obstacles.
*** Cyrus also gets [[spoiler:his heart broken by both his crushes (even if he was not aware of TJ being blackmailed) and loses his grandmother. He’s also initially afraid of his feelings for a boy.]]
** Jonah Beck, who is in a frighteningly realistic portrayal of an emotionally abusive relationship. And after episode 11, despite valuing his friendship with Andi, she ends their friendship because she feels she was only friends with him because of her crush on him, and he doesn't even know this. [[spoiler:When Andi ends their relationship in Season 2, Jonah has a panic attack during Cyrus' bar mitzvah. He doesn't want to tell his friends about this, and tries to get back together with Andi, possibly to prevent more panic attacks from happening. In Season 3, his panic attacks get worse and it’s revealed that his family has lost their home. He just wishes for things to be happy again. Jonah then goes back to his relationship with Amber shortly after being dumped by Libby. It seems that he uses relationships as coping mechanisms.]]
** TJ has become one in Season 3; it helps that he's a much sweeter and better person than he used to be and thus, easier to sympathise with. TJ already had insecurities and self-destructive tendencies, but in a short span, [[spoiler:he loses his friends, is blamed for things that aren't his fault, is a victim of homophobic blackmail, alienates himself from Cyrus, and finds himself under Kira's manipulative and controlling thumb. It's become a joke in the fandom that the writers just won't let TJ be happy.]]
