-->-- '''Wrestling/NobuhikoTakada''' introducing Silva in HUSTLE

Paulo César da Silva (born July 21, 1963 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a UsefulNotes/{{Brazil}}ian {{Professional Wrestl|ing}}er and UsefulNotes/MixedMartialArts fighter, better known as Giant Silva. He debuted in 1981 and signed with Wrestling/WorldWrestlingEntertainment, where he was put in Wrestling/TheOddities stable along Wrestling/{{Kurrgan}}, [[Wrestling/JohnTenta Golga]] and other characters. After the group's demise, Silva was fired to make room for Wrestling/TheBigShow. He moved to Mexico for the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, where he became incredibly popular as a surprisingly athletic babyface giant. He then was recruited by Wrestling/AntonioInoki and left for Wrestling/NewJapanProWrestling, joining Giant Singh (afterwards known as Wrestling/TheGreatKhali) to form the team Club 7, Wrestling/MasahiroChono's giant bodyguards. The two titans eventually turned on each other and both left NJPW, with Silva landing in Dream Stage Entertainment. He gained popularity after starting a rather unfortunate MMA career and simultaneously competed in Wrestling/FightingOperaHUSTLE, where he served as [[Wrestling/NobuhikoTakada Generalissimo Takada]]'s main enforcer. After the fall of HUSTLE, Silva kept wrestling in the American wrestling circuit before fading into the darkness. He is apparently retired, and according to rumors, works as a bouncer.

!! "Giant Tropes":
* AchillesHeel:
** In pro wrestling, naturally for a giant like him, his legs and his comparative slowness of reaction were his main weak spots. If his opponents managed to get him on one knee, they could gang up on him and land many cheapshots before he brushed them aside. His stature itself had another very obvious shortcoming: he was so tall that his gravity center was above the third rope, so he was more prone to fall off the ring than smaller wrestlers if pinned against the ropes.
** In MMA, his main weakness was his lack of mobility and training. Even if Silva was pretty fast for a guy his size, his movements were like slow motion for his much lighter opponents, who could outmaneuver him on the ground and strike him without danger while he was busy trying to reposition.
* {{Acrofatic}}: More "heavy" than "fat" example, but valid nonetheless. Despite his enormous size, Silva could maneuver like none other giant in pro wrestling. He could perform sunset flips, slingshots, top rope attacks and even hurricanranas (those with some assistence, that is).
* AlmightyJanitor: The way he was booked in México, where he took entire teams by himself, Silva would have been virtually undefeatable in singles matches and could have taken all the promotion's titles had he wanted. However, he was more content with being a humble ally to any babyface who needed a help against some bunch of rudos.
* ArchEnemy:
** In CMLL, Los Capos, especially their own bruiser Gigante Kurgan.
** In NJPW, he did not have a clear cut one at first, but Wrestling/ManabuNakanishi was possibly the only opponent who made it personal for Silva. Later, after their breakup, [[Wrestling/TheGreatKhali Giant Singh]] became a more classical sworn enemy to him.
** In HUSTLE, Wrestling/{{Akebono}}, the only name in puroresu who could top him in size. They even had a MMA fight in PRIDE, with Silva coming victorious. In real life, however, they were seemingly close friends.
* AssKicksYou: One of his favorite spots was cornering the entire enemy team against the turnbuckle and bumping them hip-first.
* AtArmsLength: A variation of this situation happened in MMA, as Silva's height and limb length impeded opponents from hitting effective ground and pound through his guard - simply because they couldn't reach his face from there. Opponents eventually realized this and started capitalizing on his slowness to work around his guard instead of go through it.
* BarbarianHero: Even when playing as a técnico or babyface in CMLL, he was still a giant dude with long hair who roared a lot and bruted his way through the ring.
* BarbarianLonghair: Began sporting long hair after the WWF, and it became his trademark.
* BashBrothers:
** In WWF, with the Oddities.
** In CMLL, with Brazo de Plata (the only other superheavyweight in the promotion) and any other técnico who needed it. He later allied with Pierroth Jr.
** In NJPW, with Masahiro Chono and his Team 2000 stable, and also with Giant Singh until their falling out.
** In HUSTLE, with any mook of the Takada Monster Army, though especially with Giant Vabo.
* BigDamnHeroes: Had his first appearance in CMLL saving the diminutive Tzuki from a beatdown by Universo 2000 and the Dinamita brothers.
* BigFun: The Oddities's gimmick. Also, he was featured in this [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76NS6KiFmVQ funny promo]] in CMLL where he helped Tzuki and some other midget wrestlers to win a basketball match.
-->"Did you see, Dr. Wagner? Here on the field, I am the king, and on the ring, same. So I want to invite you to a match against us, either here or there. Bring in your most valuable players."
* BigGood: Silva used to be appointed the babyface's team captain in the relevos matches in México, as he was naturally the wrestler most difficult to eliminate.
* TheBigGuy:
** In the Oddities. Granted, ALL of the three main male Oddities, Golga, Kurrgan and Silva, were huge, but he was the tallest and the least experienced when he entered in WWE.
** In CMLL, for any heroic wrestler who needed his help, especially if it was a midget wrestler and/or against Los Capos.
** The same as the previous in National Wrestling Superstars.
* BoisterousBruiser. In México. He lacked the loudless, as he was composed and polite, but otherwise qualified at being a huge, funny guy who loved to fight.
* UsefulNotes/{{Brazil}}
* TheBrute:
** For Masahiro Chono in his Team 2000 stable, later joined by Giant Singh as a duo.
** He also acted as Pierroth Jr.'s muscle after his FaceHeelTurn in CMLL.
** More famously for Generalissimo Takada in HUSTLE. Not counting Wrestling/{{Goldberg}}, Silva was Takada's first brute and even intervened in the main event of HUSTLE-1 to help Goldberg against Wrestling/NaoyaOgawa.
* CarryABigStick: In Japan, he used to come to the ring carrying a big wooden club. He even appeared in MMA events with it, which led to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPZrUpDkws4 this weird (and probably staged) incident]] after his fight against Takashi Sugiura.
* CelebrityResemblance: With his long hair and face, he looks very like Carles Pujol, which was noted by European fans.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: He left wrestling without an official retirement in 2010.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: A given as part of the Oddities, even although he was ironically the least weird of its members. This re-surfaced occasionally in HUSTLE every time they required a big brute with weird ideas for their comedic vignettes. In a hilarious instance, when Yuji Shimada asked him to sign up a death risk contract before participating in a weird MMA-rules battle royal, Silva just wrote the kanji for "giraffe" and handed him the document looking all content.
* CircusOfFear: His gimmick as part of the Oddities was a circus freakshow, with Silva playing the world's largest man.
* ColourCodedForYourConvenience: Started wearing black ring attire in México, and it became his usual wear color, both as face and heel.
* CovertPervert: In HUSTLE, he was seen backstage overhearing the Evil von Maestros being "satisfied" in a BDSM session with Yinling, which she had promised to every Monster wrestler who won his match that night. Silva immediately motivated himself with HUSTLE Drink and went to defeat Spanky and Titus along with Red Onigumo. Although it was not shown, it is implied he received his own "satisfaction".
* CurbstompBattle: The majory of his wins. Silva wrestled more handicap matches than single ones, but he [[TheJuggernaut never allowed it to bother him.]]
* DavidVersusGoliath: Except when facing people like Kurrgan or Akebono, and he was still taller than them.
* DarkerAndEdgier: After some years in CMLL, he started sporting BarbarianLonghair, wearing all black and showing a more serious personality. This became his outlook in Japan when he was brought there as a heel.
* DeathFromAbove: His main finishing move was the Giant Press, a diving splash performed generally from the second rope and sometimes from the ''top rope''. If it was not for a splash, he was perfectly comfortable leaping from the top rope in diving crossbodies or shoulder blocks.
* DemotedToExtra: The team match against Kaientai was the one which saw most of Giant Silva in the WWF, as he was relegated to a cornerman to the main team of the Oddities (Golga and Kurrgan) and was barely tagged in at all in their trios matches, often only to finish an opponent.
* DeusExitMachina: Before a match between Oddities and Too Much in 1999, Droz came and challenged Silva, who promptly slingshot-ed his way out the ring and went after him. It turned out that it was a ruse concocted to keep Silva away from the ring and impede him to aid his partners. The Oddities lost the match via interference from Disciples of Apocalypse while the giant was attacked by Droz InTheBack with a chair.
* DissonantSerenity: He was quite the calm guy in México. Not even Los Capos's dirtiest deeds made him overreact beyond a very somere TranquilFury.
* DownerEnding: His team with Giant Singh broke up just before gaining the IWGP Tag Team titles.
* TheDreaded:
** Not even the worst dissers of the Oddities dared to underestimate Silva. The Kaientai guys ''implored'' him not to enter the ring, and ICP made sure he was tied down while they humiliated the rest after their betrayal.
** A legitimate badass like Heath Herring spent most of Silva's PRIDE debut circling away and running away from him. It was only when opponents learned that Silva was not as dangerous in close quarters as he looked that he started to be in the receiving end.
* DumbMuscle: He was not portrayed as unintelligent whenever he was allowed to develop a character, most notably in CMLL, where he was surprisingly eloquent for a wrestler of his kind. Played straight in HUSTLE, as he received a more generic, even comical "all brawn, no brains"-like monster gimmick there (although he was still far from being the most stupid of Takada's cronies).
* EvilCounterpart:
** Silva had a short career in Memphis Wrestling as [[EvilIsBigger "Giant King"]], an enforcer brought by Randy Hales to defeat [[Wrestling/JerryLawler Jerry "The King" Lawler]].
** In México, Los Capos briefly brought Kurrgan (as Gigante Kurgan) to have their own giant wrestler to counter Silva. They had some clashes before Kurrgan disappeared from Mexican TV.
* EvilIsBigger: Giant Singh and him were brought by Masahiro Chono to substitute the team of Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima in his heel stable.
* {{Expy}}:
** The WWF commentators noted him as one to Wrestling/AndreTheGiant, and in fact, Silva is ''taller'' than him, albeit much more slender. In Japan, Silva used Andre's music theme.
** He also echoes Wrestling/GiantGonzalez, who was a basketball player and had South American nationality like him. Silva was an infinitely better wrestler, though.
* FinishingMove: In WWF, he used the chokeslam and the powerbomb. While in Mexico, he added the Giant Press (a diving splash from the second or top rope), and kept all of them in Japan.
* FoeTossingCharge: A variation. When crouched down and surrounded by enemies, he would simply stand up casting his arms aside, which was enough to make all the gang fly around if they were light enough.
* ForeignWrestlingHeel: In NJPW as a member of Team 2000 and initially in WWF as a member of the Oddities.
* GentleGiant: Both when playing a babyface and in real life.
* TheGiant: A clear example, although he was an atypical one in that he wrestled as a babyface for a good part of his career and had several high-flying techniques.
* GiantEqualsInvincible: Justified in México, as the quick grapples and flying attacks typical to lucha libre were useless against a guy who could effortlessly power out from just anything. Japanese wrestlers hadn't much better luck, as Silva was also large enough to absorb strikes as if nothing.
* GiantMook: As a heel.
* HeroicSacrifice: In his tag team matches in México, he sometimes performed a multiple variation of Wrestling/MickFoley's Cactus Clothesline to take opponents with him outside of the ring (and allow Silva's allies to finish the ones who were still on the mat).
* HeroKiller: Silva and Singh dedicated their NJPW careers to destroy established veterans like Wataru Inoue, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Hiroshi Tanahashi and every wrestler who dared to oppose the Team 2000.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Lost a match against [[Wrestling/{{Rikishi}} HUSTLE Rikishi]] when Silva picked up a TV monitor to bludgeon him only for Rikishi to kick it right on his face.
* [[IKnowMaddenKombat I Know Basketball]]: Was part of the Brazilian Olympic team, and occasionally used his basketball ability during gimmick matches in HUSTLE. He was paired with Giant Vabo, a former volleyball player.
* IncompletelyTrained: Barely had any MMA training when he stepped in the ring. He only had a crash course in UsefulNotes/BrazilianJiuJitsu and never learned proper striking, which would have been his strong point thanks to his abnormally long reach (see Semmy Schilt and Choi Hong-man as examples).
* ItAmusedMe: When he pretended to be angry with Mexican interviewer Heliodoro Hinojosa and tossed him onto a pool.
* TheJuggernaut: In Mexico and Japan. He took entire teams of wrestlers by himself, and it was needed copious amounts of willpower and teamwork only to merely slow him down.
* KungFuProofMook: This was lampshaded by Takada, who called Silva an "Anti-HUSTLE Wrestler". Ogawa and Hashimoto tried to counter him by bringing their own giant, Kohei Sato, as well as Katsuhisa Fujii as support, but they failed.
* LightningBruiser: Stood among the CMLL luchadores not only for his gigantic size (of course), but also his incredible aerial capabilities. The rudos who opposed him characteristiclly freaked out whenever he came from the top rope against them.
* MightyGlacier: In WWE he didn't used any high-flying offensive, being more of a traditional giant which was slow but enormously big and strong. His late Super Astros matches did allow him to fly a bit, though.
* NoSell: In pro wrestling, he usually absorbed every strike his opponents threw at him, even if they came from several men at once. On the other hand, nobody could no-sell his own hits.
* OddFriendship: In CMLL, with midget wrestler Tzuki. Silva himself had some words of wisdom about it in their first meeting in a park.
-->"The size of the person doesn't matter. What does matter is the size of the heart."
* OnlySaneMan: Among all the Oddities, he was the only who did not dress outrageously, had no particular quirks and was not a mentally insane person of any kind. In addition, he was the scariest and the one who turned serious the fastest when it was needed. He did play along their antics most of the time, though.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Was already '''34''' when he debuted on WWE TV on the May 25 (taped May 19th), 1998 ''Raw'', and was 35 when he had his first televised match at ''Wrestling/{{SummerSlam}} 98''.
* PowerStable: The Oddities, Team 2000 and Takada Monster Army.
* PraetorianGuard: With Singh to Masahiro Chono.
* TheQuietOne: He was never given the mic during his WWE tenure (albeit he once made the chorus for a singing Kurrgan). He was quite the opposite in Mexico, though.
* RedBaron:
** In WWE, "The Largest Man in the World".
** In Japan, "Heisei no Dai Kyojin" ("The Great Giant of the Heisei Era", a reference to him being the sucessor of Wrestling/AndreTheGiant) and "The South American Soldier".
** In all places, "Paulao" (the Brazilian form of "Big Paulo").
* ScreamingWarrior: Often roared during his matches.
* SoreLoser: He beat up Manabu Nakanishi after losing by countout to him.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Hit El Pantera, a cruiserweight wrestler, with a ''third'' rope Giant Press. The poor Pantera was rendered explicitly KO with the impact.
* ThrowTheMookAtThem: A specialty of his was military pressing an opponent and tossing him onto his cronies. It was specially memorable in WWF Summerslam 98, when he grabbed Wrestling/TAKAMichinoku and threw him outside onto the entire Kaientai.
* UnskilledButStrong:
** He couldn't do lucha libre matwork (though he ''could'' do lucha libre high-flying), but he was strong enough to counter any move like a grownup playing wrestling with his son.
** Pundits used to note that Silva's signature striking in MMA was just like he did in pro wrestling: clubbering hammerfists and bear slaps to the top of the head instead of real punches. However, he did rock Heath Herring in one of the few occasions he actually landed, because when a guy the size of Silva hits you, it's guaranteed to hurt even if he doesn't know how to strike.
* UnstoppableForceMeetsImmovableObject:
** Whenever against other superheavyweights, like Vic Grimes, Viscera, Gigante Kurgan, Giant Singh, HUSTLE Titus and Akebono. He had wins over all of them, except Viscera, whom he only faced in an in-ring brawl anyway.
** Speaking of Akebono, he met him in what was probably the heaviest MMA matchup ever. Silva won, though whether he was the unstoppable force or the immovable object is a more difficult question.
* TheWorfEffect:
** He was taken out with ease by Viscera when the Ministry of Darkness kicked the Oddities out of WWF.
** Has this tendency towards fellow giants. Despite having defeated Giant Singh in a singles match, Silva was mostly beaten up by him when they met again in a team match in Mexico, which was amusingly won by Silva's team anyways. Years after he had another fluke with HUSTLE Titus, being physically outclassed (but again winning the match).
** Silva also jobbed to Tadao Yasuda, who was being strongly pushed in New Japan thanks to his MMA victory against Jérôme Le Banner.
* WorldsStrongestMan: In this case, The Largest Man in the World. Interestingly, the nickname was not much of an exaggeration: while not in the world, he is still probably the second tallest wrestler in WWF/E history and was certainly the tallest of the roster back when he was part of the Oddities.
