''[=LoliRock=]'' (2014-2017) is an animated MagicalGirl series produced by French company Creator/MarathonMedia (also known for ''WesternAnimation/TotallySpies'' and ''WesternAnimation/MartinMystery'') and co-produced by Zodiak Kids in association with [[Creator/DisneyChannel Disney Channel France]].

The show follows Iris (Creator/KazumiEvans), an ordinary teenage girl whose {{beautiful singing voice}} causes strange occurrences to happen around her. After being rescued by two other teenage girls named Talia (Creator/AshleighBall) and Auriana (Creator/TabithaStGermain), whom she met earlier at an audition for the eponymous GirlGroup, she learns from them that she is actually [[ReallyRoyaltyReveal a princess from a magical kingdom called Ephedia]], which has been taken over by [[BigBad Gramorr]] (Creator/MackenzieGray) as she was [[MosesInTheBulrushes sent away to Earth as an infant to be kept safe from him]]. To save her kingdom, she must now hone her newly-discovered magical powers with their help as they are tasked to [[GottaCatchThemAll locate and recover]] the [[MineralMacGuffin Oracle Gems]] before Gramorr and his underlings, Praxina (Creator/KellySheridan) and Mephisto (Creator/VincentTong), find them. All the while maintaining their {{Masquerade}} as young [[IdolSinger Idol Singers]] on Earth and helping out the locals along the way.

The music aspect is used heavily in marketing, with five music videos per season released outside the show. The title itself comes from the name of the band itself, and according to an [[WordOfGod interview on the official site]], it’s a play on "LOL," "i" as in the Spanish conjunction "y" meaning "and", and "rock."

As of March 2022, both the first and second seasons of the show are available for streaming through Creator/{{Netflix}} and Creator/PrimeVideo. Through an [[https://www.instagram.com/reel/CqEmnRnpIXK/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D Instagram post]] by show creator Jean-Louis Vandestoc, a third season is currently in the works.

----
!!''[=LoliRock=]'' provides examples of:

* AbandonedWarehouse: Several fights between Lolirock and black crystal monsters occur in an abandoned warehouse.
* AllPartOfTheShow: When Praxina and Mephisto attack [=LoliRock=]'s impromptu concert, people think it's to promote the show the band is trying to get into.
* AlwaysNeedWhatYouGaveUp: On the day Izira loans her [[TransformationTrinket Medal]][[AmplifierArtifact lion]] to her little sister, Talia, [[spoiler: Gramorr attacks Xeris and easily defeats the weakened Izira]].
* AnachronicOrder: According to some of the dialogue, the episodes were not released in chronological order -- summer is referred to after the Halloween episode, and Auriana references, in "Spellbound", a music video they made before they made their first one in Season 2's "I Want My LTV".
* {{Animesque}}: Naturally, both in theme and art. The show has strong influences from MagicalGirl and Idol anime.
* TheBadGuyWins: The episode "Heavy Metal", in which Mephisto plots to set up a "good deed" that could earn the girls one of the Oracle Gems only to have it taken away from them, ends with the plan actually working, much to Iris' brief frustration.
* BatmanColdOpen: One in "Xeris", and if you don't count Iris's narration at the beginning, "Shanila Surprise" would also count, as would "Forget You!"
* BigBad: Gramorr, the evil usurper of Ephedia. He's actively trying to capture or kill Princess Iris (mostly through his lackeys, though he acts directly when he can) to cement his grip on the throne. Conversely, the goal of the princesses is to defeat him and return Iris to the throne.
* BlackMagic[=/=]WhiteMagic: The core of every spell is either white (for the heroes) or black (for everything the villains use). Notably, most BlackMagic spells are short, while WhiteMagic spells tend to be a bit longer (except Auriana's Crystarmum spell). Spells that are neutral (anything out of a book) tend to be the longest.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Iris, Talia, and Auriana respectively.
* BoyishShortHair: In "Shanila Surprise," Iris goes through a magic puberty/rite of passage called Shanila, where most of her hair falls out until she has a pixie cut. Auriana and ([[EmbarrassingOldPhoto reluctantly]]) Talia show her some pictures from when they experienced it.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Iris in "No Thanks for the Memories", Auriana in "Wicked Red", and Talia in "Dancing Shoes"
* BrotherSisterTeam: Praxina and Mephisto, siblings who serve Gramorr and do most of his dirty work, and who are the main enemies of [=LoliRock=].
* ButHeSoundsHandsome: Mephisto, as part of a plan to trick Iris in "Truth Be Told", calls her phone using a spell to make himself sound like Auriana:
--> '''"Auriana":''' The evil and very good-looking Mephisto and his super-annoying sister are attacking!\
'''Iris:''' "Good-looking?"\
'''"Auriana":''' Hurry, before the awesome handsomeness of Mephisto defeats us!
* ByThePowerOfGrayskull: [[TransformationNameAnnouncement "[name], Princess of [country]!"]] Used to transform into their magical outfits, which increase their magical abilities while transformed.
* CallingYourAttacks: Most of their more substantial magic gets called out as "Crystal [[[CanisLatinicus Something Vaguely Latin]]]!"
* TheCameo: WesternAnimation/RekkitRabbit appears as a stuffed toy in one episode.
* ChromaticArrangement: The [[spoiler:first]] three princesses represent the three primary pigments, with Iris wearing red/pink, Talia in blue, and Aurianna in yellow/orange.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: The kingdoms all seem to have their own colours -- pink for Ephedia, orange for Volta, blue for Xeris, purple for Calix, and green for Borealis. There's also two unknown regions with yellow and red magic, based on other characters we see.
** ColourCodedMagic: Again, pink for Ephedia, orange for Volta, blue for Xeris, purple for Calix, green for Borealis. Spells cast with BlackMagic are coloured black in the core, while spells cast with WhiteMagic are coloured white. It's the glow that changes colour depending on the caster.
* CombatStilettos: All three princesses wear these in their MagicalGirlWarrior outfits as does Praxina.
* ComicBookAdaptation: Four episodes have been adapted into bande dessinée-style comics: "To Find a Princess," "Batty," "Sirens" and "Shanila Surprise." They were illustrated by Marco Albiero, are amazingly faithful to the show's art style, and are incredibly hard to find, especially the first and last volumes. Also, they were only released in French.
* ComicBookTime: Iris says Talia and Auriana are "exchange students", meaning they're still in the WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld stage of life, but not only is there a Halloween episode, time's noted to pass without the twins bothering the girls. And yet, they are never once shown going to school, nor is school ever talked about.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Mephisto and Praxina in "If You Can't Beat'Em" and later in "Forget You!"
* DidntThinkThisThrough: In "I Want My LTV", the girls, who are trying to make a music video, stumble across Mephisto and Praxina who are trying to film a music video. While it's {{lampshade|Hanging}}d that it's suspicious, the one thing that sticks out is that they ask for them to remove their jewellery during filming. And the girls need these jewellery. Let that sink in for a minute.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Mark's addiction to Gramorr's wand in "Amateur Hour" is something like an addiction to drugs. He becomes uncontrollable when he holds it for too long, refuses to stop using it, and passes out for hours after it is destroyed.
* EverythingsBetterWithSparkles: Sparkles during concerts, sparkles during transformations, the girls even have constantly sparkling bits on their magical outfits.
* EveryEpisodeEnding: The episodes generally end with the titular band performing in concert.
* FashionableAsymmetry: The show contains many examples but most of Auriana's outfits fit the bill. (Technically all of them do because of her side ponytail.)
* FishOutOfWater: Talia and Auriana are both out of touch with Earth culture, but it is more apparent with [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Auriana]].
* FlatJoy: The King despite not having seen his daughter since infancy, [[spoiler: speaks in a very flat, unemotional voice when he does see her]].
* FreudianTrio: Logical, serious Talia is the Superego, hyper, emotional Auriana is the Id and, moderate Iris is the Ego.
* FrillsOfJustice: As is to be expected from a MagicalGirl show, their Magical Outfits are quite over the top.
* GemstoneAssault: One of the standard magic effects for both heroes and villains is to create whatever they need from crystals, including bridges, walls, and many of their {{Magic Missile}}s.
* GenkiGirl: Aurianna, who is hyped and cheerful all the time.
* GirlGroup: The titular [=LoliRock=] is one; an all girl band focusing on cheery pop music and girl-power anthems.
* GottaCatchThemAll: Oracle Gems, powerful artifacts that were scattered to Earth to hide them from Gramorr. If Iris wants to become powerful enough to take him on, she needs all of them.
* GratuitousEnglish: The songs in the French dub are peppered with English phrases, like "pop revolution party" and "dance floor".
* HollywoodToneDeaf: All of the girls in Sunny Bay who auditioned for Lolirock before Iris, according to Talia.
* HumanAliens: The [=LoliRock=] trio is made up of three princesses of different kingdoms from a magical planet, although Iris at least grew up on Earth.
* InstantRunes: Everyone (except Gramorr) has their own unique magic circle that appears every time they use their magic. Deinos and Kakos have the same circle but with different colours (blue and yellow, respectively).
* InTheNameOfTheMoon: "Fighting harm with crystal charm!", a group phrase, shows up a few times before a beat-down, most notably [[spoiler: before defeating Gramorr]].
* LaResistance: The season 1 finale reveals that [[spoiler:Izira has escaped to form a small resistance movement with two other princesses, Carissa and Lyna, and the remaining citizens of Xeris.]]
* LastDayOfNormalcy: The first episode begins with Iris going through her ordinary life prior to auditioning for the eponymous band, where she inadvertently discovers her magical powers and soon learns that she, as well as her bandmates, are warrior princesses destined to protect the universe from destruction.
* MagicalGirlWarrior: Their strongest magic is used for fighting and the final goal is for Iris to become powerful enough to defeat Gramorr and save the kingdom. The pop star stuff is more of a side-job.
* MagicIdolSinger: The girls use some magic in their on-stage performances and Iris's powers first manifest through her singing.
* MagicMusic: While they don't use it to fight, Iris has had problems all her life with her singing accidentally activating her magic, and her voice holds inherent magical properties to the point where the villains attempt to steal it.
* MagicWand: Each princess has one, with Auriana's being a ribbon, Talia's resembling a staff/spear, and Iris's resembling a mic.
* TheMasquerade: All of the girls work to pretend there is no such thing as magic (and on Earth, there isn't usually) or Ephedia.
* ModestyShorts: As part of the Princesses' outfits when transformed.
* MonsterOfTheWeek: Praxina and Mephisto (usually Praxina) summon a Black Crystal beast about once every episode.
* MuggleBestFriend: Nathaniel has no magical powers of his own, but seems unfazed by Iris's magic and the two are close friends.
* MuggleFosterParents: Iris is raised by her Aunt Ellen, who seems to be unaware of her heritage.
** [[spoiler: Averted. In Season 2, we learn she is not only Ephidian, but she was instructed to raise Iris on earth while keeping their true heritage a secret.]]
* MundaneUtility:
** What do you do with magic borne of music and crystal-generating powers? Why, use it in lieu of expensive special effects during concerts!
** Outside of their concerts and crime-fighting, the girls also use their crystals in mundane manners such as umbrellas.
* MusicGenreDissonance: Lolirock is not a rock band. It's a pop group.
* NonIndicativeName: Despite its name, [=LoliRock=]'s music is obviously not rock (though they are called a "rock band" by other characters), but rather pop with plenty of electronics.
* {{Novelization}}: As is the trend in France for popular kids properties, La bibliothèque rose is steadily pumping out novelizations of each episode even though there has been no word on the show's future development. At the moment, there are a total of 17 books written and/or planned to be released.
* OhCrap: Talia has one when Mephisto and Praxina cast their "Proscella" spell.
* OlderThanTheyLook: According to promotional materials, the girls are supposed to be 15 (16 in Talia’s case), but the character design makes them look somewhat younger.
* OminousLatinChanting: Any long spell or especially dramatic spellcasting scene can come out as this. Plus, a few tracks from score have this.
* PardonMyKlingon: "Klatznik," ("Kratchnitz" in the French version) used mostly by Praxina and Mephisto, and sometimes Talia.
* ParentalAbandonment: The King and Queen of Ephedia vanish after Gramorr takes over, leaving Iris to be raised by an adoptive aunt.
* PhantomZone: When fighting in a public place and/or against some big monster, Amaru can provide an arena in another dimension to avoid any casualties.
* PimpedOutDress: Both their magical outfits and several of their concert outfits are quite elaborate as well.
* PowerCrystal: One large one in Ephedia which powers the girls' finishing move, and the Oracle Gems constitute another example.
* PowerDyesYourHair: Aside from growing their hair longer, the princesses' transformations also change the color of their hair. [[http://teamlolirock.tumblr.com/post/132828079638/kireiscorner-pinkunohonoo-sofiabonnet The official blog]] confirms that the bright colors are a direct result of Ephedian magic, and the return to their "natural" hair color is a result of spending an extended amount of time on Earth.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: Most noticeable on Auriana, but all three girls get somewhat longer locks while transformed.
* ThePowerOfHate: According to Mephisto, this is how Black Crystal Magic works.
* PrecisionFStrike: Near the ending of episode 20, Talia exclaims, "Hell yeah!"
* [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Proud Warrior Race Girl]]: [[spoiler:Carissa of Calix]] has been raised to be a warrior her whole life and mentions that her kingdom values strength and fighting ability as one of the most important skills to have.
* RagsToRoyalty: Iris is a Sleeping Beauty type, having been sent away as an infant for her own protection and discovering her heritage at the beginning of the show.
* ResetButton: Gets pressed in "Princess Brenda Part II" in order to [[spoiler:stop Mephisto and Praxina's victory, as they'd encased people Iris loves in crystals forever. She goes back to the start of the previous episode, erasing Nathaniel's memory of learning TheMasquerade]].
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Amaru, a tiny, fluffy cat-thing with giant eyes and a lot of personality.
* SecretIdentity: Iris has to keep her princess life a secret to everyone, even her adoptive family.
* ShipTease: [[OfficialCouple Iris/Nathaniel]] get most of it, Talia/Kyle get this mostly in his second episode, but also [[FoeRomanceSubtext Auriana and Mephisto]] get some during the episode "Wicked Red". There's also a little between Iris and Lev in his episodes, especially his last lines to her.
* ShortTeensTallAdults: Despite most being over 15, meaning they would be likely finished growing, teens in the show are drawn at least half a head shorter than most adults. Iris herself is more than two heads smaller than her mother, and one head shorter than her Aunt Ellen.
* ShouldntWeBeInSchoolRightNow: The girls are canonically still of schooling age, but they're never once shown in school.
* ShoutOut:
** [[Franchise/SailorMoon Usagi Tsukino]] (as a little girl) and WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic can be seen in the background of a few episodes for brief moments, that you won't really notice if you're not looking for them.
** In "Castles in the Sand", the magic words used by Mephisto to control the monster are "[[KlaatuBaradaNikto Klaatu Barada Nikto]]".
** Mephisto himself is named after the demon in Myth/{{Faust}}.
** In "Dance Craze", at the Halloween Party, there's someone dressed as [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Link]].
** In "The Haunting", some of [[Franchise/DragonBall the Dragon Balls]] can be seen in Ella's things.
** In "Musical Magical Tour", Carissa references a sport called "Ephedian [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX Blitzball]]", and the gameplay she describes sounds like Quodpot (or, America's answer to [[Franchise/HarryPotter Quidditch]]). The title of the episode is, of course, a reference to Music/TheBeatles and Music/MagicalMysteryTour.
** In "Wicked Red", it's possible that the brainwashing shampoo Auriana and Amaru use is one to ''WesternAnimation/KimPossible''.
** Lev's last conversation with Iris is nearly word-for-word taken from ''WesternAnimation/{{Anastasia}}'':
--->'''Iris:''' You changed your mind?\
'''Lev:''' Uh, more like a change of heart.
** Iris turns back time in "Princess Brenda Part II" and uses her knowledge from the alternate timeline, where Nathaniel finds out her secret, to set things right. This is one to [[Series/TheFlash2014 The Flash]] in "Out of Time" and "Rogue Time" where Barry does the same thing. Special bonus to both series having a character named Iris, and the identity revelation involves Barry revealing his secret to Iris West while Iris reveals her identity to Nathaniel.
** In "Sirens", the Princesses reach a sunken ship to rescue a character who had previously been there. After they fill the ship with air, that character asks them how they did that. Iris states that it was really complicated and that they had to use ping-pong balls. This is a reference to a [[ComicBook/DisneyDucksComicUniverse Donald Duck]] story by Creator/CarlBarks, where a sunken ship was raised by lowering a hose from the surface and pumping it full of ping-pong balls.
** In "Xeris", Talia sneaks out of her home to attend a party. As she's gone, Gramorr attacks and cripples Xeris and presumably kills her parents while [[CurbStompBattle utterly defeating Izira]], who is not at her full strength because she gave Talia her medallion. When Talia returns home, having had a good time, Xeris is in ruins, and once she realizes what happened to her family, she breaks down in tears. The very same thing happened in ''Film/DragonballEvolution'', only the survivors were killed.
** A couple of the English episode titles are music references: "I Want My LTV" is [[{{MTV}} "I Want My MTV"]], "No Thanks for the Memories" from FallOutBoy's "Thanks for the Memories", "Strawberry Fields for Never" is from "Strawberry Fields Forever" by Music/TheBeatles, "Musical Magical Tour" again The Beatles "Magical Musical Tour", "Stop in the Name of Lev" is from "Stop in the Name of Love" by TheSupremes, "Talia and Kyle Sitting in a Tree" is from a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_song#Game_songs popular kids' song]].
* ShownTheirWork: The magic spells are not [[CanisLatinicus complete gibberish]]. They have legitimate Latin roots, words or even phrases. They might not be pronounced or declined correctly, but if you read the subtitles, they're there, especially with the longer spells from the twins.
* SingleStrokeBattle: Happens a couple times in the series.
** In "A Promise is a Promise" Talia and Auriana perform this on Praxina. While Prax is visibly harmed, she laughs it off as a NoSell.
** Happens twice in "Desert Heat". A non-sword example with Talia and Praxina. Talia prepares to attack Praxina with a spell, only for Praxina to attack first and imprison her in a bubble. The second time is similar to "A Promise is a Promise", where Iris and Talia perform one on a Scorpion Monster. The Monster falls.
* SquishyWizard: Mephisto has powerful crystal magic, but goes down hard when Iris kicks his leg. He also freaks out when she shoots a tiny, needle-sized crystal into his butt.
* SuperMode: Iris's "Shanila" form, which she becomes her most powerful and can wipe out anything in one second.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Comes up whenever anyone comes remotely close to learning about TheMasquerade. Especially awkward whenever the {{muggle}} is already laughing at the absurdity of what another character (usually Auriana) says, and BadLiar Iris still feels the need to ensure the other person thinks Auriana is joking.
* SymbolMotifClothing: In addition to ColorCodedForYourConvenience, each kingdom (and by extension, princess) has a symbol that is found on their clothing (including the non-royal people) -- a Pink HeartSymbol and a red, pink, or white four-pointed star (red on the King) for Ephedia, an orange crescent moon for Volta, a green FleurDeLis for Borealis, blue diamonds for Xeris, and a purple compass rose for Calix.
** The villains have an animal motif (except for Kakos and Deinos): Mephisto (green snake), Praxina (red butterfly) and Lev (yellow bird).
* ThreePlusTwo: [[spoiler:The team in the season 1 finale. Carissa and Lyna are shown fighting alongside and casting a powerful spell with them near the end of the episode.]]
* TownGirls: Beauty Iris is femme, Brainy Talia is neither, Strong Auriana is butch. (though Talia and Auriana can be both)
* TransformationNameAnnouncement: The [[ByThePowerOfGrayskull incantation]] the princesses use to change into their magical forms is simply a statement of their name and home country: "[name], princess of [country]!"
* TransformationSequence: As per magical girl tradition, each of the princesses has a twirling jaunt through a sparkly pocket dimension when powering up into their magical forms.
* TransformationTrinket: Iris's is her necklace, Talia's is her bracelet, Auriana's is her ring, Lyna's is her hair dec, and Carissa's is her arm band.
* TrueLovesKiss: Referenced by Auriana and ultimately used to break the [[LovePotion love spell]] used on Iris and a boy named Charlie.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With their [[ForceAndFinesse vastly]] [[SlobsVersusSnobs different]] personalities, it's a minor miracle when Carissa and Lyna don't get into an argument and start casting spells on each other. Fortunately, they are still friends, and can work well together when the situation calls for it.
* WarriorPrincess: Every single princess in the show. All of the princesses seem to have had ample combat training, and while some are more badass than others all of them can hold their own in a fight. The season 1 finale expands on this by revealing that [[spoiler:Taila's older sister Izira started a LaResistance with two other princesses, Carissa and Lyna, after escaping from Gramorr]].
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse:
** At the end of "Heavy Metal" (episode 17 of the first season), Mephisto successfully gets an Oracle Gem. It doesn't show up again, nor is it mentioned, until the second season.
** Mephisto's staff from "Lucky Star" wasn't destroyed, but it hasn't been used since, either. [[spoiler:With his death in the Season 2 finale, it will never be used again.]]
* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: Where is Sunny Bay? Presumably, it is in a coastal American state judging by the [[EverytownAmerica name, geography and generic architecture alone]]. Real places are never mentioned, except for the planet Earth itself. Even Ephedia has more place names known.
* {{Wipe}}: Used in every episode.
* WizardsLiveLonger: Ephedians live longer and age slower than humans. According to the official blog, this is due to their ability channel Crystal Magic and the sheer amount of it on their home planet. **Which puts [[spoiler: Aunt Ellen's distress at discovering she has greying hair on her birthday]] into perspective. [[spoiler: Because she lives with Iris in Earth's magically deprived atmosphere, she ages faster than she would on her Ephedia.]] The Queen of Ephedia herself hasn't changed a bit in the 15 years she was held prisoner[[spoiler: and they were about the same age.]]
*** [[spoiler: Strangely, her wrinkles disappear when she transforms, even on Earth, so maybe Crystal Magic has a rejuvenating effect.]]
* WorldHealingWave: Crops up in the season finales. The first comes when [[spoiler: the five princesses heal the crystallised citizens of Iris's hometown]]. The second is on a smaller scale -- [[spoiler: it only affects Ephedia's castle, and comes after Gramorr is defeated]].
* YouMonster: Iris uses this phrase multiple times, usually about Gramorr. [[spoiler:Especially in the Season 2 finale to its most awesome extent while transforming into her Shanila form.]]
