''[[http://survivingtheworld.net/ Surviving the World]]'' was a daily, gag-a-day PhotoComic by Dante Shepherd (the creative pseudonym of Dr. Lucas Landherr), covering topics ranging from all over the map including life, romance, politics, science, etc. The comic is structured as a college class, and had the working title of ''101''. Each comic (termed a 'lesson') takes the form of Dante standing in front of a blackboard, with the day's lesson written upon it. The lessons cover a wide range of topics, from social issues to practical advice to literary references (notably to [[Literature/AlicesAdventuresInWonderland Lewis Carroll]]).

It ran for 10 years and 1 day, from May 31, 2008 to June 1, 2018, and totaled 3634 comics, comprising:
* 3548 lessons (including 100 separately-numbered recitations and 17 recitations included in the official numbering
* 43 guest lectures
* 28 student presentations
* 25 miscellaneous other comics and posts

Dante also occasionally hosted live streams of the making of the comic, and for a while included a monthly crossword by Justin Smith.

A book featuring 300 of the best comics was funded on Kickstarter during the final month of uploads, and is due to be released to backers in December 2018.

%%* HurricaneOfPuns
* LongRunner: It ran for 10 years and 1 day, with over 3600 comics. (That one day is very important, as it allows Landherr to say it ran for 'over ten years'.) In that time, only 20 days' break were taken.
* MadScientist: As good a theory as any as to why they exist [[http://survivingtheworld.net/Lesson1236.html]] and in some pictures he certainly looks like one, especially with his default BadassLabcoat.
%%* MathematiciansAnswer: Occasionally, in response to reader questions on Fridays. Usually overlaps with ComicallyMissingThePoint
* NeverBareHeaded: In every picture he has on a redsox ball cap. He's gone on record saying he wants his kids to think the hat is his normal hair.

%%* OurZombiesAreDifferent: [[http://survivingtheworld.net/Lesson740.html Of the real world, "living dead" variety]]
* PunnyName:
** Dante's Dog (and occasional guest lecturer) is named German [[DontExplainTheJoke (do as many pet owners do and apply the owner's last name to the pet)]].
** German is not, however, a German Shepherd. He's a large Beag-no, a Treeing Walker Coonhound.
* ThatPoorCat: According to Dante, cats make the best erasers.
%%* TheTalk: On the differing views of [[http://survivingtheworld.net/Lesson736.html Sex Ed]]
