%%The comics are all wicked on Internet Archive pages despite the fact that the site is still currently active. Any help in fixing these wicks by changing them to the non-broken current site wicks would be appreciated.

''[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/ Brawl in the Family]]'' was a {{Gag Per Day|Webcomics}} {{Gaming Webcomic|s}} hosted on Platform/{{Keenspot}} starring Franchise/{{Kirby}}, and featuring various video game characters, mainly those that have appeared in the ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'' series, but most of the plots and running jokes are based on Kirby and King Dedede. It was written and drawn by Matthew Taranto, AKA [=TriforceBun=] from ''Theatre/TurnaboutMusical''.

The comic usually used a fairly simplistic art style, originating from bored-in-class sketches and doodles. [[AnimationBump There is more complex art on occasion]], including homages and tributes to the styles of other artists.

A [[https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/437762268/brawl-in-the-family-volume-one commercial book]] was released, with the first 200 comics and a huge amount of content thanks to extensive funding. There is also a {{podcast}}, which can be found in the description of a few of the blog posts.

Thanks to the notoriety gained from the comic, Matt has become one of the comic artists for ''Magazine/NintendoForce'', the [[FanSequel fan-made]] SpiritualSuccessor magazine to ''Magazine/NintendoPower'', and created his own Website/{{Kickstarter}} [[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/437762268/tadpole-treble funded]] game, ''VideoGame/TadpoleTreble'', a RhythmGame made in the comic's art style. He has also supported other Website/{{Kickstarter}} projects, such as ''[[https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1358562997/gamemaster-howards-know-it-all Gamemaster Howard's Know-it-Alls]]'' and ''VideoGame/{{Nefarious}}''.

The first comic was uploaded on May 1, 2008, about seven weeks after the NA release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The final comic, #600, was published on October 3, 2014 -- [[BookEnds the exact same day the NA/EU Brawl era ended]], with the release of ''Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS'' in those regions. The podcast, however, continued after the comic's conclusion.

On March 31, 2018, Matthew launched a Website/{{Kickstarter}} campaign for the release of a book called ''[[https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/437762268/too-bad-waluigi-time/description TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME]]'', containing the roughly 50 original Waluigi strips from ''Brawl in the Family'' plus 200 new strips, most all featuring Waluigi. Those which do not feature him are titled ''Back in the Family'' strips, wherein the main ''[=BitF=]'' characters interrupt Waluigi's comics in a [[RestrainedRevenge revenge]] [[SwappedRoles role reversal]]. The book was well beyond funded by May 1, 2018.

%%* AccidentalMurder: The sun does this to the ''entire planet''; see the comic given in CreatorBreakdown for the full story.
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: At one point, Kirby made a comic, which King Dedede found funny even though he didn't want to admit it.
* AffectionateParody: The webcomic parodies various Nintendo games in a way that's clearly done out of love.
* AllThereInTheManual: Dedede's teacher in Cocoon Academy is a Mr. Dragmire. Sound familiar? It shouldn't. This is the last name given to Ganondorf in the English manual of ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkToThePast A Link to the Past]]'', and hasn't been mentioned in canon since.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: InUniverse examples:
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/143-crocomire/ This one]] interprets [[VideoGame/SuperMetroid Crocomire]] as a non-threatening individual who just wanted to make friends with Samus before getting killed.
** Also, "[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/200-odetominions/ Ode to Minions]]" interprets the heroes of various video games as cruel and genocidal murderers and the enemies and bosses they fight as innocent victims, even though the minions in the games will kill the player if given half the chance.
** And [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/264-countdowntodoom/ here,]] we have one for the moon from ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask'', who is just as scared of descending towards Termina as the denizens of Termina.
** And with [[VideoGame/MetalGear Snake]] as a lecherous dick, starting [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/242-sitg2/ here]].
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/336-bossroom/ Bosses being grounded and locked in rooms]] by the {{Big Bad}}s. Also doubles as [[VillainsOutShopping Villains Playing Solitaire]].

* AlwaysABiggerFish: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/507-cheepcheep/ 507 strip]] carries this trope to extreme lengths before turning it on its head.

* AmbitionIsEvil: Where Ganondorf and [[spoiler:Dedede]]'s [[StartOfDarkness Starts of Darkness]] came from.

** 2014: A Wario and Waluigi week of him taking over both [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/finaluigi/ the comic]] and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/556-warioandwaluigi/ various Nintendo characters' games]] before [[spoiler:Waluigi gets sealed in an Assist Trophy]].
** 2015: A temporary one panel comic teasing that the strip was coming back before Waluigi popped in to say "just kidding".
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: One of the terrible future events that convince Mario to change his ways outside of Queen Peach's death is... his future spinoff games having boring concepts.
* ArtEvolution: After experimenting with a particular shading style for the monochrome comics, it ascended from a one-time visual effect to a distinct style.
** Compare how Kirby and Dedede look in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/theshowdown/ the first strip]] to how they look [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/554-smashvoterskirby/ some five-hundred pages later]]. The art's come a long way!
* ArtShift: A few instances.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/triloigi/ The last comic]] in "Waluigi Trilogi" has a striking resemblance to the art style of [[ComicBook/JohnnyTheHomicidalManiac a certain comic about a homicidal maniac]].
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/287-doppelgangers/ "Doppelgangers"]] has a far sketchier style than the other comics.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/494-politicalstrife/ Political Strife]] takes a rather interesting look in the world of [[VideoGame/AnimalCrossing Animal Crossing: New Leaf]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/313-cocoonacademy3/ Cocoon Academy Part 3 ]]temporarily switches to the old, crudely style. Heck, it even mostly mirrors the very first comic of [=BiTF=].
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/556-warioandwaluigi/ The last comic]] in "Wario & Waluigi" features linework by BitF webmaster Chris.
** All parts of [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/171-turnaboutkirby1/ "Turnabout Kirby"]] Have a similar art style to the ''Franchise/AceAttorney'' games.
** The trope gets turned up to eleven in the SeriesFinale, "Meet Me At Final Destination".
* AscendedExtra: Considering the original media of the characters, Adeleine, who first appeared in ''VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards'' and wouldn't return to the games until ''VideoGame/KirbyStarAllies'', about four years after the end of the comic.
* AscendedFanboy: Matthew recently got the chance to work with Howard Phillips of [[Magazine/NintendoPower Howard & Nester]] fame after Howard was impressed by Brawl in the Family's [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/435-nintendopower/ Howard and Nester tribute]]. He's hard at work updating a weekly comic strip detailing Howard's life and work with Nintendo!
** Matthew is now an official game developer for Nintendo with his first project, ''VideoGame/TadpoleTreble''.
** He also went on to become part of the staff of ''Nintendo Force'', the SpiritualSuccessor to ''Power''.
* AssShove:
** One time, when a Yoshi sat on its egg, the egg pushed through its bottom. [[spoiler:It then spat a Shy Guy out of its mouth]].
** Heavily implied when a VideoGame/ChibiRobo needs power and sees a [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Pikachu]]...
* AssimilationPlot: Kirby attempts this in "The Legion", with '''''[[NightmareFuel/BrawlInTheFamily TERRIFYING RESULTS.]]'''''
* AtopAMountainOfCorpses:
** Done by ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI Mog]]'' in ''Ode to Minions''.
** {{Exploited|Trope}} in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/408-resourcefulness/ Resourcefulness]], where Mario uses it to cross a pit. They're ''[[ExtraLives his own corpses]]''.
* AuthorAvatar: Although Matthew himself appears a few times interacting with the characters, the true depiction of him is shown in the GrandFinale [[spoiler:as a left-handed Master Hand.]]
* BadFuture: In "It's A Plunderful Life", it's shown that [[spoiler:if Dedede was never born, "Pinky" never fought Dark Matter at Cocoon Academy and "Midknight" (who is actually Waddle Dee) would take over Dream Land and turn it into a dystopian hellhole]].
* TheBadGuyWins: [[spoiler:In "[[YetAnotherChristmasCarol A Mushroom Kingdom Carol]]," Bowser finally beats Mario basically by leaving the Mushroom Kingdom until old age catches up with the hero and then an adult Bowser Jr. comes back with a vengence.]]
* BaitAndSwitchComment: After arriving home from their wedding:
-->'''Sarah:''' You know what I'm looking forward to...? [[spoiler:The UsefulNotes/WiiU!]]\
'''Matthew:''' Oh boy, same here!
* BallisticDiscount: Ravio gets threatened by a Moblin after renting out a Fire Rod to him in strip [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/532-ravio/ #532]].
* BegoneBribe: Turns out the Moblin only paid off Link so he doesn't tell anyone that he spends all day in his cave playing with his dolls.
* BehindTheBlack: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/finaluigi/ strip #555]], which parodies both ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' and "Literature/LittleRedRidingHood", Daisy -playing as Red Riding Hood- meets Waluigi -cosplaying as the Grandmother-, and asks if she is really the "Big Bad Waa". "Grandmother" retorts the Big Bad Was is the huge, drooling werewolf standing by her bed which "Hood" somehow failed to notice until it appeared on-panel.
* BellisariosMaxim: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/35-leafpile/ Several]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/boo/ comics]] [[invoked]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/shave/ explore]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/75-paintings/ strange]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/188-kuribosshoe/ what]]-[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/253-voltorb/ ifs]].
* BetterIfNotBornPlot: The non-canonical ending to the "It's a Plunderful Life" story arc shows Bowser and Ganondorf peacefully singing with their respective heroes and the whole world in complete bliss... if only [[spoiler:Waluigi]] never existed. According to Matthew Taranto's comments, everything in the story arc up to this point (playing ItsAWonderfulPlot straight) is canonical, while this subversive ending is a non-canonical joke rather than a serious plot point.
* BetweenMyLegs: Snake's introduction in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/242-sitg2/ this story arc.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
** You can see the crazy in Kirby's eyes when he finally snaps during "The Sleepover."
** In the AlternateUniverse where Dedede never existed in "It's a Plunderful Life", [[spoiler:Waddle Dee]] became a fearsome dictator.
* BigBallOfViolence:
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2011/11/01/375-fourhearts/ Right here]], between [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaFourSwordsAdventures Link, Red Link, Blue Link and Purple Link.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2012/05/29/412-dreamlandhomecoming/ "Well, long story short, peace has finally returned to Dreamland."]] [[spoiler:Cut to Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight and the Waddle Dee fighting each other.]]
** The third part of the December 2013 holiday comic, "It's A Plunderful Life", has a scene where Meta Knight ([[spoiler:known as "Pinky" at that time]]), [[VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand Gooey]], and Adeline assault two Waddle Doos in this manner.[[note]] This is all happening while (invisible to the others) King Dedede stares at a poster of what his replacement would be. [[/note]]
* BigNo: Kirby unleashes one when [[FelonyMisdemeanor Meta Knight takes his revenge on him]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2008/09/24/82-superstar/ here.]]
* BindleStick: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/08/30/267-butwhocouldloveamotherbrain/ Seen here.]]
* BittersweetEnding: PlayedForLaughs in [[spoiler:[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/05/18/245-sitg5/ "Snake in the Grass."]]]]
* BlackComedy:
** Shows up more often than one would think, with comics about [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/images/End.jpg the end of the world,]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2009/03/17/148-stomp1/ Mario accidentally committing murder]] and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2012/05/10/408-resourcefulness/ using his own corpses to cross a pit.]]
** One unused comic idea, seen in the second book, had Kirby accidentally release a Metroid, which not only successfully sucks all of King Dedede's blood, but turns him into ''dust''. Kirby's reaction? ''Build a '''sandcastle''' with his ashes.''
* BlessedWithSuck: Link's strength-enhancing Silver Gauntlets [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2013/05/31/492-silvergauntlets/ have unforeseen consequences]].
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Meta Knight {{lampshades}} the fact that Kirby ''and'' Dedede have this [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/176-turnaboutkirby6/ here]], except that Kirby's nice and Dedede's mean.
* BookEnds: The comic started around the time ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'' came out, in addition to being partially named after it. The day it ended, October 3rd, 2014, was the exact same day ''Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS'' came out in the US. Likewise, the [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/theshowdown/ first]] and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/599-mmafd5small/ last]] lines said by Dedede (and by extension, the comic as a whole, musical strips aside) are the exact same: "I'm gonna get you, Kirby." They're even written almost the exact same way. Lampshaded in "One Final Song:"
--> ''And it ended just like it began, with a fierce rivalry...''
* BossArenaIdiocy: [[WhoWritesThisCrap "WHO DESIGNED THIS CASTLE!?"]] Said by [[spoiler:an adult Bowser Jr.]] as Mario had cut the bridge using a axe like in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''
* BrickJoke
** It turns out Dedede really ''does'' do the Grinch routine on Christmas every year.
*** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2008/12/15/114-htksc1/ The first time he's shown doing the routine, the whole plot is the scheme.]]
*** Next year, it is called back to for four panels in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/mkc7/ A Mushroom Kingdom Carol.]]
*** In 2010, we get [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/298-jollyhappyjerk/ Jolly, Happy Jerk]], in which he steals the presents from Whispy Woods while wearing the signature Grinch "crooked, jerky smirk."
** For a literal brick joke, the dangers of invisible blocks are shown- with almost identical panels- in comics [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/71-hiddenblock/ #71]] (see PlatformHell) and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/237-variationsonavinecomic900/ #237's]] fourth comic.
** The [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/136-gooeybomb7/ Gooey]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/176-turnaboutkirby6/ Bomb.]]
** According the alt text, ''[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2009/07/28/175-turnaboutkirby5/ someone]]'' is still resentful about [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/114-htksc1/ the last Christmas.]]
** There's a (possibly unintentional) brick joke between [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/356-insomnia/ this comic]] and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/165-thelesson/ this one.]] Certainly helps explain why the Noddy felt the need to give Kirby his own revenge.
** After a year, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/385-secretsanta/ Tingle gives Ganondorf]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/300-asimplerequest/ all he ever wanted for Christmas.]]
** The bonus portion of [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/408-resourcefulness/ strip 408]] is this to [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/403-peachswarning/ strip 403.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/410-yourmoneyoryourlife/ There is now a World's Second-Best Hero mug.]]
** It seems that Princess Peach has [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/462-benigntragedy/ finally]] remembered to [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/389-resolutions/ buy a travel toothbrush.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/463-saturnvalleyhotsprings/ Strip 463]] was going to be a BrickJoke to [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/292-seemasterbelch/ 292,]] but Matthew changed his mind. He still showed [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/images/463alt.jpg his initial concept draft.]]
** In strip [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/224-bp2/ 244,]] Captain Falcon tries to make a joke about the punch in the party. Strip [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/595-mmafd1/ 595]] shows Captain Falcon with punch. In a party.
* BuffySpeak: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/200-odetominions/ Ode to Minions,]] one of the fallen minions is [[VideoGame/StarFox "Weird Triangle Polygon Ship Thing."]]"
* BullyingADragon: King Dedede throwing snowballs at Samus in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/95-phendrana/ Phendrana."]]
** Dedede also makes fun of [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/552-littlemac/ Little Mac's height.]] [[BerserkButton It ends poorly for him.]]
* ButtMonkey:
** The few times Luigi shows up, he gets screwed over. Except for Luigi's Holiday Vacation. Subverted in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/358-cloudwatching/ ''Cloud Watching'']]; Matthew originally intended for Luigi to get hurt, but he decided against it with a stern ''no'' and made Mario the victim.
** This webcomic might be one of the few examples where Mario takes just as much abuse as his brother if not more.
** Meta Knight in his first few appearances.
** King Dedede gets a good share of the abuse (sometimes he deserves it, sometimes it just seems to be baaad juju).
** [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Lickitung]] seems to be one of these as well.
** Eario might just take the cake, however. The man's job involves cleaning the floor under Thwomps and repairing automated Bullet Bill cannons.
** Sonic gets picked on in a good chunk of his appearances.
* CallBack:
** Pretty much the entire joke of "Nasty" is [[spoiler:totally subverting the earlier description of it via [[HurricaneOfPuns terrible visual puns]].]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/308-myawesomemagneton/ Red doesn't like]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/253-voltorb/ overly long jokes, apparently.]]
** Peach's appearance in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/350-ifittakesalifetime-11/ "If it Takes a Lifetime"]] is meant to imply that it takes place in the same continuity as "[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/260-thecaptiveprincess/ The Captive Princess]]".
** One that almost happened, but didn't (still brought up in the mouse-over text) - Link pays a gossip and she would've mentioned hearing about Moblins playing with dolls, which references an earlier strip where a Moblin was playing with dolls.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/395-dreamlandmix2/ Dream Land Mix 2]] calls back to multiple unfortunate situations involving Kirby's eating habits.
** Dedede [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/420-thesleepover2/ still has that doll]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/182-present/ Kirby gave him]] three years ago.
** [[Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog Shadow]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/446-thecandidate/ still remembers]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/26-shadow/ Kirby eating him.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/229-bosstryouts/ HOLY SMOKES,]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/334-balloonfighter/ YOU'RE HIRED!]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/463-saturnvalleyhotsprings/ Strip 463]] was going to be a call-back to [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/292-seemasterbelch/ 292,]] but Matthew finally decided against it. He still put up [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/images/463alt.jpg the original concept]], though.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/597-mmafd3/ During the final arc,]] Waluigi is shown to ''still'' be [[spoiler:[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/556-warioandwaluigi/ trapped in an Assist Trophy.]]]]

* TheCameo:
** [[WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph Ralph]] shows up in strip 458, giving Daisy Luigi's present.
** The four images on Pit's board from [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/534-iapl2/ It's A Plunderful Life Part 2]] includes the Hanenbow Level from Brawl, taken from an [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/33-electroplankton/ early comic]]. 162** A [[YetAnotherChristmasCarol Mushroom Kingdom Carol]], for 2009, depicting Mario as Ebenezer Scrooge, Luigi as Bob Cratchett, Wario as Jacob Marley, Rosalina as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Kirby as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and [[spoiler:Shadow Mario]] as the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.
** For 2010, we have 3 comics that turn Christmas songs into musical comics. The first, a [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/298-jollyhappyjerk/ spoof]] of WesternAnimation/FrostyTheSnowman; the second, Waluigi's take on [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/299-carolofthewaa/ the Carol of the Bells]]; and the third, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/300-asimplerequest/ Ganondorf's version of ]] [[Music/MariahCarey All I Want For Christmas Is You]]... [[CargoShip directed at]] [[MacGuffin the Triforce]].
** 2011 featured a whole string of Christmas-themed strips, including Tingle getting carried away with [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/385-secretsanta/ his "Secret Santa" gift to Ganondorf]], Samus learning to avoid [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/386-hotstuff/ a "Falcon Kiss"]], King Dedede [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/387-dreamlandbetrayal/ doing a good deed]], and a parody of "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" about [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/388-ice-world/ the ever-annoying]] [[SlippySlideyIceWorld "ice levels"]].
* CloudCuckooLander:
** [[VideoGame/StarFox Peppy]] is everywhere...
** Waluigi. There's no telling what he'll do neWALUIGI TIME.
* ComfortingComforter: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/387-dreamlandbetrayal/ Comic #387,]] where Dedede decides to do something that'll improve his usual Christmas karma (just a little) for once.
* ConjoinedEyes: Lampshaded in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/soniceyes/ #487 Sonic's Eyes.]] Tails finds a single conjoined contact lens.
* ContinuityNod: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/597-mmafd3/ Meet Me At Final Destination (Part 3)]] has a moment where the Kirby crew calls everyone to recruit them to the investigation of what's happening that's causing the world to shift art styles. The ''Zelda'' characters only get involved when Bandanna Waddle Dee calls Ganondorf, in reference to [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/456-ganondorfsholidayvacation/ Ganondorf’s Holiday Vacation]] where the latter took over Dedede's throne while the penguin was on a vacation, gaining Bandanna Waddle Dee as a servant.
* CostumeCopycat: Wario, in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/280-dubiousrescue/ #280 Dubious Rescue.]]
* CrackPairing:
** One InUniverse strip features one between Lakitu's Cloud and Mother Brain. And she got pregnant!? Matt admits that this is one of his sillier ones. And their baby? [[spoiler:[[Franchise/{{Kirby}} Kracko]], thus making this [[IncrediblyLamePun a Kracko pairing]]]]!
** [[http://cdn.brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comics/2012-05-15-409-ZoraLineage.jpg #409 Zora Lineage]] has Ruto marrying Lord Jabu-Jabu. Their children are the River Zoras.
** Meta Knight/Adeleine has been implied, mainly from Adeleine's side. One of her paintings portrays Meta Knight giving her a flower.
* CrapsaccharineWorld: Often the comic lampshades like Nintendo worlds tend to seem colourful, joyful worlds, innocent, cute realms full of wonder and happiness, but under the surface they tend to be deeply disturbing.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/110-townfolk/ 110]] - Have you stopped playing Animal Crossing for a while? These are the consequences.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/286-thefishnextdoor/ 286]] - ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'' village may not be a good place to live if you are a fish.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/438-20thanniversary/ 438]] - Kirby's Dreamland is a beautful country if you do not mind the {{Eldritch Abomination}}s wreaking havoc every week.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/466-hocotatefreight/ 466]] - The alt text talks volumes about ''VideoGame/{{Pikmin}}''.
* CrazyPrepared: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/344-jabujabu/ #344, Lord Jabu-Jabu]] made a map of his stomach, put it in a chest, and swallowed it. Then he asked for the boomerang.
* CreatorThumbprint: Though the comic is meant to give every Nintendo franchise the occasional spotlight, based on the prominence of characters, it seems pretty apparent [[Franchise/{{Kirby}} which Nintendo franchise]] is Matthew's favorite.
** ''[[VideoGame/KidIcarus Pit]]'' is starting to take on an ever-increasing presence in the comic. Matthew admits that it's become apparent how much he likes ''VideoGame/KidIcarusUprising''.
** While there have been only a few strips about ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening Fire Emblem: Awakening]]'' -and two ''VideoGame/FireEmblem'' strips previous to the release of Awakening, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/relics/ 231]] and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/404-andnowafireemblemcomic/ 404]]-, the author made clear that it was his new thing, mentioning it in several blog posts and one podcast. In that podcast, he discussed for 23 minutes before moving on to the comic itself.
** There is many strips dedicated to ''VideoGame/{{EarthBound|1994}}'', one of the Matthew's favorite games, and tons of little easter eggs included in many non-Mother strips.
** Inverted with ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'', which has only got one strip -albeit many easter eggs- in spite of it is his second favorite game. This is because he wants to keep his strip Nintendo-focused and because he's afraid of FFVI jokes would fly over his readers' heads.
** ''VideoGame/MegaManClassic'' is his favorite non-Nintendo video game character. Long before his inclusion in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'' Matthew had said that as far as he was concerned, the blue bomber was always welcome in his comic. After Mega Man [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmCVzjGVFy4 become officially a Smash Brother]], Matthew quickly [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/495-comicreviewe32013/ expressed his delight]] and devoted [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/500-prodigal-robot/ a milestone strip]] to both celebrate the inclusion and introducing him officially.
** Most of his Zelda-related jokes use ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaI'' and ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' like material source, or feature those games' Links. Matthew adores the quirky nature of the former, and the later is his favorite game.
* CrossoverCouple: Being a crossover-based webcomic, there are a few examples:
** Kirby/Jigglypuff.
** And now [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/241-sitg1/ Samus/Captain Falcon]] too.
** If you look closely at [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/smallbreak/ #190,]] you can see [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess Midna]] apparently flirting with Mr. Game & Watch.
** And now [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/267-butwhocouldloveamotherbrain/ Mother Brain/Lakitu's Cloud.]]
** Dedede and Prinplup, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/454-dededesholidayvacation/ in comic 454,]] though it's one-sided.
** Pit seems to have [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/504-fitpit/ developed a crush]] on the Wii Fit Trainer.
** Mega Man developed a [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/543-megacrush/ crush on Samus.]] Or at least, one part of her...
* CurseCutShort:
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/ridley/ Ridley's "OH CRA-"]] People on the forums have made several phrases of what he actually might be saying, such as "OH HOW CRAZY."
** Also in the Mushroom Kingdom Carol, when Daisy says it's too bad the Scrooge-like Mario has a wrench up his... where exactly, Daisy?
[[/folder]]

[[folder:D-F]]
%%* DadaComics: [[color:purple: TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME.]]
* DarkerAndEdgier:
** The Mushroom Kingdom Carol arc, which depicts the idyllic world of the Mario Bros. as a decaying land under Bowser's grip and its citizens as deeply impoverished and plagued by constant taxes.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/249-nasty/ Comic 249 was foreshadowed in a previous April Fool's strip]] as containing "excess gore, racism, foul language, public indecency and frightening imagery." [[spoiler:Subverted in that it's all told in completely work-safe {{Visual Pun}}s (and a ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}'' ShoutOut).]]
* DeathIsASlapOnTheWrist: "[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/577-afterlife/ Afterlife]]" lampshades the use of this trope in various Nintendo games by asking various characters what happens after death. Mario just comes back as long as he made enough money beforehand, Pokémon simply change their type resistances, and Kirby and the Villager don't even know what "death" is. Subverted for the ''Fire Emblem'' characters, where death sticks... unless you're important, in which case it doesn't.
* DeliberatelyMonochrome:
** While the comic is usually monochrome except for every 5th strip, A Mushroom Kingdom Carol made creative use of color. [[spoiler:Christmas past is in color, red and green reappear once Mario [[HesBack regains his resolve]], and once he [[SaveThePrincess saves the queen]], full color returns.]]
** Waluigi's comics are in color. [[ExactWords Purple is a color.]]
* DestructiveSaviour: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/149-hero/ This strip]] shows what damage can be done in the course of ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' games.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Many of the comics have this as the joke. For example [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/78-landmaster/ Fox calling the Landmaster on a wooden boat.]]
* DiscretionShot: Used [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/175-turnaboutkirby5/kirby-part-5/ here.]]
** Combined with GilliganCut and BrownNote [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/196-zombiefinale/ here]] and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/323-philipsbox/ here.]]
** Also [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/126-lensoftruth/ here.]]
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: Brawl in the Family has developed Waluigi into his own unique character out of a SatelliteCharacter of Luigi.
* DoesNotUnderstandSarcasm: Adeline shown in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/488-adeleineforsmashbros/ this strip.]]
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything:
** The [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/477-broyaleinthefamily-2/ comic]] in which Raiden finds out Snake is in Brawl.
--->'''Raiden:''' I KNEW IT!\
'''Snake:''' This isn't what it looks like!
** A subtle example spotted in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/smallbreak/ "Where's Waluigi"]].
* TheDogBitesBack: Don't discipline your Lucario too much. [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/80-ownersguide/ ...Just trust us on this one.]]
* ADogNamedDog: Lampshaded when Mario finds [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/431-frog/ the wrong Toad]] and the wrong Yoshi.
--> "I'm not Toad! I'm just ''a'' Toad!... You got the wrong guy!"
* DoubleTake: Kirby does this in Strip 580 when he realizes that just announced [[spoiler:that the comic is ending.]]
* DramaticIrony: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/311-cocoonacademy1/ Cocoon Academy]], [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Professor Dragmire]] tells his class that every one of them will be a hero someday. His class contains [[Franchise/{{Kirby}} Dedede]], [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Bowser]], [[Anime/PokemonTheSeries Jessie]], [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOracleGames Veran]], [[VideoGame/WarioLand Wario]], and [[VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry K. Rool]].
* DramaticUnmask: Subverted twice with Meta Knight. We eventually see what his face looks like in [[spoiler:the Cocoon Academy arc]]. It's not what you might think. Or exactly what you think, if you played any Kirby game with him as a boss.
* TheDreaded:
** The Where's Waluigi game is remarkably easy due to the rest of the cast either being disgusted by him or terrified of him.
** Virtually every undead character from Nintendo franchises is rightfully terrified of Pac-Man.
%%* EatsBabies: Waluigi
%%* EldritchAbomination:
%%** Dark Matter in the "Cocoon Academy" story arc.
%%** Kirby becomes one himself in "The Legion".
* EmbarrassingNickname: [[spoiler:"Pinky"]] is this for Meta Knight.
* EpicFail:
** Ganondorf's checkmate in episode 300.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/520-confuseray/ Gyrados is confused! It hurt itself in its confusion!]]
** Inverted in the [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/2013-10-22/ next strip]], where a confused Electrode tries to use Self-Destruct.
* EpilepticTrees: [[invoked]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/title-490/ The truth about Zebes.]]
** [[invoked]] [[ShrugOfGod Matt also would like think]] that the guy [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/746-herecomesfrederick/ insistently]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/499-theweapontriangle/ pesters]] ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening Frederick]]'' is an ancestor of the annoying ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue Bug Catcher]]'' that [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/308-myawesomemagneton/ constantly]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/430-thebestpokemonteamever/ pesters]] the Pokémon Trainer.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: This exchange in strip 208, after Mario rescues Peach:
-->'''Mario:''' Are-a you okay?\
'''Peach:''' Actually, I'm fine! He never laid a finger on me.\
'''Bowser Sr.:''' Well, I'm not a monster.
* EveryoneWentToSchoolTogether: Most of the comic's characters went to Cocoon Academy, in a flashback story arc. Though a few did not.
* EverythingsBetterWithRainbows: Well, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/335-roygbiv/ kind of]].
* EvilLivingFlames: A couple of strips parody the tendency for this sort of enemy to turn up in a lot of Nintendo titles.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/399-fbameeting/ FBA Meeting]] shows a number of these from several games at a Fire Baddies Anonymous meeting, including [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2 Fry Guy]], [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 an Angry Sun]], [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros a Podoboo, a Fire Snake]] and [[Franchise/{{Metroid}} a Sova]]. Things take a turn for the awkward when a group hug causes them to merge into a single giant bonfire.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/405-hotdate/ Hot Date]] has Fry Guy and [[VideoGame/KidIcarusUprising Pandora]] rather angry about how a movie they just watched made them see a giant inferno be extinguished and then expected them to sympathize with the firemen. Their day doesn't improve much when [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Morpha]], a giant mass of water, comes along.
--->'''Pandora:''' At least he didn't hug us this time.
* ExactWords:
** When most people think "color comic" in regards to ''[=BitF=]'', they imagine a comic in full color. As Waluigi points out in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/151-witf/ his 15th strip]], a "color comic" which is in the same purple and white as his other strips, "purple is a color".
** Pit gets a blind date with a "leggy girl with a huge chest". [[spoiler:It's a Mimicutie, a ChestMonster from ''Uprising'' with long feminine legs.]]
** The alternate punchline to "[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/547-dividebyhero3/ Divide by Hero (Part 3)]]". Navi only said Link had a fireproof tunic, she didn't say he was ''wearing'' it...
* ExpressiveAccessory: Lakitu's cloud in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/title-442/ #442: Lakitu.]]
* ExtremeOmnivore:
** Kirby has eaten [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/11-zombie/ a zombie]], [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/64-bob-omb/ a Bob-omb]], [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/172-turnaboutkirby2/ Miles Edgeworth]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/23-universe/ the universe]], and... 261** Waluigi has eaten [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/151-witf/ Baby Mario]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/triloigi/ a puppy, a philosophy book]], and [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/299-carolofthewaa/ a caroling book]]
* EyeScream: A [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda goron]] looks through a peephole in the side of a mountain inside which [[TheHero Link]] is adventuring. Things do not end well. [[Franchise/{{Metroid}} Phantoon]] has a similar problem, [[EyesDoNotBelongThere due to having eyes in his mouth]].
** And now there's the Mario variant with [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/491-marshy/ this comic]]
* FacePalm: Peach after receiving a rescue from Wario in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/280-dubiousrescue/ 280 - Dubious Rescue.]]
** In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/492-silvergauntlets/ this one]] Link accidentally knocks himself unconscious with one.
* FauxHorrific: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/185-ametroidadventure/ "Oh no! REAL Fake Kraid!"]]
* FeelingTheirAge: An important plot point in "A Mushroom Kingdom Carol". [[spoiler:Part of a decades-long plan to easily conquer the Mushroom Kingdom involves Bowser deliberately going into hiding for several years until Mario naturally becomes an elderly man. Then a sudden assault on the kingdom by an adult Bowser Jr. has him easily kidnap Queen Peach, but Mario can't stop him due to his age and forgetting how things worked like Question Blocks and Fire Flowers. He does overcome this by instead using the ''Yoshi's Island'' gameplay.]]
* FingerlessHands: Kirby. He even [[LampshadeHanging Lampshades]] it in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/gooeykablooie/ Gooey Kablooie.]]
-->"This would be a lot easier if I had thumbs..."
* FlatScare: A variation. When Dedede and Meta Knight are stuck together by a Gooey Bomb and as Dedede is sweating Meta Knight flatly says "Boom" to get a rise out of Dedede.
* ForegoneConclusion: The conclusion of "Snake in the Grass".
-->'''Snake:''' But first, a drink. Waiter! Something light. Hm, water or punch? Yeah, punch sounds good. Punch. I'll take the PUNCH. NOW.\
''(Samus nods at Captain Falcon. He grins and adjusts his tie)''\
'''Captain Falcon:''' '''[[EnhancedPunch FALCOOOON...]]'''
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** A minor case, but [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine Shadow Mario]]]] being the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come in "A Mushroom Kingdom Carol". Now, if you played that game, you should know who that ''really'' was... And now, '''[[spoiler:consider who shows up near the end]]'''...
** Waluigi's takeovers getting RunningGagged was the first warning sign that the comic was ending. A few months after that strip it was announced the comic was ending.
** [[http://cdn.brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comics/2011-03-21-CocoonHiatus.jpg The placeholder image for Cocoon Academy (part 9)]] shows Pinky with purple shoes. Part 10 reveals, as many readers had guessed, [[spoiler:that Pinky is actually Meta Knight]].
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: In the ''Return to Dreamland'' comics, we have King Dedede as the Cynic, Kirby as the Optimist, Meta Knight as the Realist, and Waddle Dee as the Apathetic.
* FridgeLogic: A lot of the InUniverse humor comes from applying the funny stuff from Nintendo games, and seeing what happens.
* FurryConfusion:
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/286-thefishnextdoor/ That'll cause a few nightmares.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/354-animals/ Wait, who's the hedgehog?]]
** An unusual version in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/477-broyaleinthefamily-2/ 477]]: [[VideoGame/LittleBigPlanet Sackboy]] sees a sack race in the company picnic. The vision of people hopping around in what seemed hides of skinned sackboys ''did'' gave him nightmares.
* FurryReminder: Dedede's mother [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/314-cocoonintermissiona/ laments how ungrateful he's behaving]] after she regurgitated a hot meal for him, which is a nod to how real penguins feed their own young.
* {{Futureshadowing}}: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/waluigipaper/ Strip 232]] does this for [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/249-nasty/ strip 249.]]

The scrawlings include "[[VideoGame/ZeldaIITheAdventureOfLink I AM ERROR]]," the {{Konami Code}}, and the [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros Smash Bros symbol]].
* GetOut: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/391-pushmo/ Pushmo]], [[VideoGame/{{Pushmo}} Papa Blox]] is trying to get people to solve his Pushmo puzzles the intended way, while getting exasperated at everyone doing their own things. He takes a liking to Toon Link upon seeing him actually working at the puzzle, until he pulls out his Hookshot, at which point Papa Blox gives him these two words and points at the exit.
* GiantHandsOfDoom: ''[[VideoGame/GoldenSun Isaac's]]'' Move [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/63-isaac/ vs.]] ''[[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros Master Hand]]'', as well as ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Bongo Bongo]]'' [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/smallbreak/ vs.]] ''[[VideoGame/StarFox Andross]]''.

* GuestStrip: To celebrate Matthew's birthday, he allowed his family and his fiancé to each draw a comic for the week (the only person who didn't contribute was his mother). Also as mentioned above, BitF webmaster Chris drew the last strip in the "Wario and Waluigi" series.
* GuiltBasedGaming: VideoGame/AnimalCrossing's example thereof is [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/110-townfolk/ made even more guilt-inducing.]]
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/592-juggler/ Inspired by]] a [[https://kirby.fandom.com/wiki/Clown_Acrobot Clown Acrobot]] to learn how to juggle, Kirby studies the skills needed extensively, only to fail on his first attempt. Seeing an ad for Ringley's Rings, Sonic sees it looks exactly like a ring container. After trying not to give in to the desire to break it open, Sonic snaps and throws himself at the [=TV=], screaming.
* HereWeGoAgain: At the end of A Mushroom Kingdom Carol, Bowser says "Humbug" (as Mario did at the start of the arc), which elicits this reaction from the Ghosts.

** Subverted again in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/389-resolutions/ resolutions]], Link's resolution is apparently "To speak his mind more." But before he can say it Navi shouts it out for him, drowning his voice.
* HeroicSacrifice: As "[[https://youtu.be/EscOE4sSYOo Plumber's Best Friend]]" (Strip 550) nears its end, [[spoiler:Mario and Yoshi attempt to jump to another platform on the other side, only to fall into an abyss after falling short of the platform. 317* HiddenInPlainSight: Played for laughs [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/smallbreak/ here]]. The idea is to look for Waluigi in the midst of a MASSIVE host of characters... [[spoiler:but he's that easy to find because ''everyone in his immediate vicinity runs away from him''.]]
* HostileShowTakeover: [[color:purple:TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/164-undernewmanagement/ Done by Dedede once.]]
* HotSkittyOnWailordAction: [[CrackPairing Ruto and Jabu-Jabu]], used to [[EpilepticTrees explain]] the rather ugly appearance of the "Zola" enemies in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaI''.
* HowTheCharacterStoleChristmas: The character being King Dedede.
* IAteWhat:
%%Given Kirby's habits, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/160-pancakes/ that's kind of inevitable.]]
** Invoked also in the ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar'' homage multi-comic, in the ''Spring Breeze'' strip. After Kirby sucks in one of the stars that come from Dedede's ground pound attack, he stops and thinks "What did I just eat...?'
* IdenticalStranger: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/103-dededoo/ Kingsonnn Dededoo.]] He was created to humorously subvert PaperThinDisguise, then [[ContinuityNod kept showing up occasionally]].
* IfICantHaveYou: A non-romantic example; [[spoiler:in "The Legion", Monster!Kirby stated that his friends were being mean, so he ate them all so they won't leave him.]]
* InterfaceScrew: A rare non-gaming example. If you're going on an ArchiveBinge using the old version of the site, you'll hit the 2009 Waluigi April Fool's page. There's no "next" button, so the only way to continue is going to the archive page and clicking the next comic in line.
* IronicEcho:
** Dedede's line, "I'm gonna get you, Kirby" has been turned back on him on a few occasions:
*** Once in the Cocoon Academy arc, when he got into a cafeteria fight with Pinky.
*** In the AltText for one strip in the sleepover arc.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/title-561/ "Minions, babe."]] First said by Bowser to justify cheating in ''VideoGame/MarioGolf'', and later thrown back at him by Peach.
* ItsAWonderfulPlot: It's a Plunderful Life, starting [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/533-iapl1/ here]], has Pit showing King Dedede a bleak world ruled by the evil Midknight if Dedede never existed. While most of the story arc plays the trope straight, it ends with a non-canonical BetterIfNotBornPlot when it turns out the world would have been better if [[spoiler:Waluigi]] never existed.

* {{Jerkass}}: Snake, though not as much as Dedede.
* KeyUnderTheDoormat: When the [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2 Phantos]] is around, hiding a key ''anywhere'' is not a good idea.
* KlingonPromotion: Pichu is kicked out of Brawl for being (gameplay-wise) a clone of Pikachu, but evolves into one soon after. He then uses a Poké Ball on Melee's Pikachu, and takes over his position. See CheshireCatGrin above.
* LampshadeHanging: They '''love''' doing this, mostly with Mario universe conventions.

''[[VideoGame/KidIcarus Pit]]'' pretends to agree, but his reply only frustrates the blue bomber further.
* LevelInTheClouds: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/238-heaven/ Strip 238]] subverts this (after showing the same result in strip 237).
* LintValue: In the strip where Bowser gets his own flying clown car.
* ListSong: last half of the "History of Nintendo" song is a very long list of people and game titles associated with Nintendo.
* LiterallyShatteredLives: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/title-482/ Hopefully Eario can humpty dumpty that mess so Hyrule isn’t forever doomed.]]
* LogoJoke: Starting with [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/365-theegg/ The Egg.]] Most [=BitF=] logos since then have had a joke related to the comic.
* LongBusTrip: The spotlight seems to rotate from one series to the next, so naturally, there would be characters left out.
* LoopholeAbuse: Mario cleverly figures out the [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/124-pickabox/ word box]] [[ExactWords counts as a box too.]]
* LudicrousGiftRequest: In one of the Christmas songs, Gandondorf sings about wanting the Triforce for Christmas to the tune of "All I Want for Christmas is You", but he doesn't get it as if he did, he would use its power to destroy or conquer Hyrule. Later, he does get it, and Zelda is annoyed but only because everyone agreed on a $20 limit.

* MassiveMultiplayerCrossover: Well it is based off ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'', after all.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: {{Implied}} with Ruto and Jabu-Jabu, but we don't know how long Zora or... [[BuffySpeak big... whale... god... thing]] lifespans are.

** Comic 400, which also marked the comic's return after a long hiatus due to Matt's sickness.
** And [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/500-prodigal-robot/ comic 500]] was a homage to Mega Man and an overview of the character's history, at the tune of some of the most popular songs of the franchise.

* NonStandardCharacterDesign
** Dedede's [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/314-cocoonintermissiona/ father]] is a photo realistic penguin, rather than an exaggerated or cartoonish one.
** Waluigi is usually drawn in a more deranged style than everyone else. [[spoiler:This is briefly averted at the end of [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/finaluigi/ Waluigi Finaluigi.]]]]
* NotHisSled: The WholePlotReference story arcs start out as pretty much the original story, [[AC:[[RecycledInSpace with Nintendo characters!]]]] However, [[spoiler:both of them deviate from the source material with the beginning of the end of arc.]]
%%* NotSoDifferentRemark: Meta Knight calls out King Dedede on how the latter and Kirby aren't so different.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/477-broyaleinthefamily-2/ strip 477]] Raiden encourages Snake to join them in the Battle Royale, but Snake claims being busy. As mentioned in the newspost, one forum member rewrote the DownerEnding of the strip to portray Waluigi as someone who prefers to celebrate alone.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Dedede demonstrates this in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/20-savior/ "Savior."]]
** And again in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/iapl4/ "It's a Plunderful Life."]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: During the GrandFinale arc where the universe keeps undergoing {{Art Shift}}s for some unknown reason, Meta Knight tries to get Kirby and King Dedede's attention to explain what's going on. With King Dedede ignoring him to blame Kirby, and Kirby too amused by it to pay attention, Meta-Knight finally gets fed up, takes his mask off, and throws it at Dedede, revealing his face for the first time since [[spoiler:the Cocoon Academy arc]].
* OriginalCharacter: Eario, the janitor who cleans up after the Mario Bros. Kingsonnn Dededoo and the Bug Catcher as well.
* OriginsEpisode: The Cocoon Academy arc tells the origin of King Dedede [[spoiler:and Meta Knight.]]
* OrphanedPunchline: A downplayed example in the final strip of [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/finaluigi/ "Waluigi Finaluigi"]]. In any other Waluigi strip, "SANDCASTLES ARE NOT PRACTICAL" would be the punchline in the final panel, but here it's in the first panel without any prior set-up.
* OutsideTheBoxTactic: In [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/502-diamonddog/ Diamond Dog,]] Paula demonstrates an unorthodox yet incredibly effective way to get rid of a beast made of diamond.

** Thwomps tormenting Mario in numerous ways.

** The fact that it piggybacks on Super Smash Bros' massive crossover of characters from diverse fictions means this trope is often going to crop up in various other ways related to that.

* SevenDeadlySins: The fourth part of the "Turnabout Kirby" arc has Meta Knight using photographic evidence against Dedede, with each picture containing a certain sin from previous comics.
* ShallIRepeatThat: Strip #333, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/333-advice/ Advice,]] plays out pretty much the exact scenario that many a player of [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Ocarina of Time]] would have experienced, only giving it an in-universe explanation.

* SnowySleighBells: The musical comic [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/388-ice-world/ Ice World]] is a "celebration" of {{SlippySlideyIceWorld}}s which is, you guessed it, rythmed by sleigh bells.

* StockScream: "A Simple Request". You can hear the WilhelmScream during Veran's part.
* StopHavingFunGuys: [[invoked]] Parodied in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/276-aqualitygame/ 276]]. Dedede goes on about how naive Kirby is for enjoying Brawl, but quickly joins in when he realizes you can make [[UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny Mario and Sonic fight.]]

* StylisticSuck: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/164-undernewmanagement/ KIRBY, YOU ARE THE WORST.]]
* SuddenlySpeaking: Throughout the webcomic, Link never utters a single word... until comic 323, in which he is [[VideoGame/TheLegendofZeldaCDIGames possessed by the Philips CDi]]. After that, he remains silent for the rest of the comic's run until comic 597, where he briefly turns into his [[WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfZelda1989 animated series incarnation]].

* SweetieGraffiti: Kirby and Jigglypuff do this, [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/90-love/ unfortunately for Whispy Woods.]]
* SymbolSwearing: In comic [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/363-sunssong2/ 363,]] courtesy of ''Navi'' out all people.
* TakeOurWordForIt: Meta Knight's face is badly scarred after the Gooey Bomb incident... Or so we're told.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/196-zombiefinale/ In "Zombie Finale,"]] we don't get to see how Kirby finished the horror story... But judging by everyone else's reaction, well...
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/323-philipsbox/ Sixteen extremely traumatic seconds later...]]
* TakeThat: A [[http://i.imgur.com/DNu5R.jpg subtle one]] to [[Webcomic/CtrlAltDel CAD]].
** This [[http://i.imgur.com/dClxx.jpg not so subtle parody of Loss.jpg]] that he contributed to the CAD Sucks thread at Website/SomethingAwful.

*** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/495-comicreviewe32013/ Subverted here.]] Sonic braces himself for another... and then it never comes.
* TakeThatScrappy[[invoked]]: The comic hasn't missed it's chance to take the expected jabs at [[TheScrappy the most infamous in]] {{Creator/Nintendo}}, though it's certainly more good-natured about it than others:
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/assisttrophy/ Assist Trophy]] features Link and Ganondorf having a truce to go after Tingle. The author notes that just about every {{Gaming Webcomic|s}} has some sort of obligation to draw the creepiest Tingle they can.
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/330-gooddog1/ Good Dog]] shows the VideoGame/DuckHunt Dog getting replaced by the much more encouraging [[VideoGame/YoshisIsland Poochie]] and [[ExiledToTheCouch Exiled to the Doghouse]]. Matt however feels that the Dog doesn't really deserve his status, as his infamous snicker wasn't really all that mean-spirited, and he does a good job as a hunting dog otherwise.
* ThatCloudLooksLike: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/358-cloudwatching/ ...A Lakitu throwing a Spiny into your face.]]
* [[invoked]]ThatOneLevel: Not a level in itself, but [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/388-ice-world/ this comic]] [[MusicalEpisode sings]] about the tendency for {{Slippy Slidey Ice World}}s to be such.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Using a Level 100 Gyarados on a Level 2 Pidgey.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Waluigi [[spoiler:who might have gotten it from his father,]] and Eario.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck "Its beginning to look just like an '''[[SlippySlideyIceWorld Ice World]]'''. Ohhh boy here we go..."
* ThrowingTheDistraction: "The Captive Princess" supplies the page image.
* ThrowTheBookAtThem: According to [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/468-magictomes/ this comic,]] this is why [[SpellBook magic tomes]] in the ''VideoGame/FireEmblem'' series [[BreakableWeapons break.]]
** To be a bit more specific, [[ViolationOfCommonSense they set them alight,]] then throw them. The same is true for [[PowerCrystal dragonstones.]] One has to wonder though, how this works for the other varieties of magic...
* ThrowTheDogABone: Luigi at the end of A Mushroom Kingdom Carol.
** "I was going to have Luigi be the one to get the Spiny in the face...but you know what? ''No''."
** Luigi proves to be [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/title-457/ surprisingly competent]] when it comes saving Hyrule. Matthew points out after this one that on a comic-by-comic basis, Mario's been far, far more abused than Luigi has in the webcomic's run.
* TomatoSurprise: At the end of the "Cocoon Academy" arc, we learn that [[spoiler:"Pinky" is actually Meta Knight. And Headmaster Hand is Crazy Hand. Master Hand and Kirby were never actually in the arc at all. Also, the masked figure presumed to be Meta Knight is actually Waddle Dee, who later gives his mask to Meta Knight.]]
* TooDumbToLive: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/292-seemasterbelch/ That]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/463-saturnvalleyhotsprings/ is]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/images/463alt.jpg incorrect]], ''[[VideoGame/EarthBound1994 Master Belch]]''.
* TookALevelInBadass: Mario is shown to be a dork in Cocoon Academy, with Luigi of all people being the popular one. But when Dark Matter attacked, Mario gains admiration upon spinning Bowser around and using him as a living flamethrower.
** Princess Peach, after having been captured, becomes more independent as she breaks out of Bowser's castle using nothing but her earrings, a fork, her crown and an errant Fire Flower growing from a vine outside her cell. She manages to escape just as Mario gets in. WordOfGod says this is based on her appearances in the VideoGame/PaperMario series showing her being more cunning and capable than her platformer counterpart.
* TooSpicyForYogSothoth: [[PreAssKickingOneLiner Step aside.]] [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/323-philipsbox/ Waluigi Time]].
** [[{{Squick}} Waluigi is buttoning up his shirt in the last panel]]. [[RelaxOVision Sixteen seconds was too long.]]
* TraitorShot: In the "Turnabout Kirby" arc, after Meta Knight gives the Judge evidence that Dedede may just be framing Kirby by showing his own flaws, Dedede angrily demands to know where Meta Knight got such evidence. He replies "Let's just say... I have an informant". Cut to the jury bench. [[spoiler:The scene then zooms in on Waddle Dee as his eyes shift.]]
** Also, when Meta Knight is "banned" (reflecting his real-life ban from ''Brawl'' tournaments): as Master Hand takes him away, he angrily raves about how he thinks it was Dedede who orchestrated this. [[spoiler:It was actually Kirby, as the scene zooms in on him and he gives a barely noticeable smile.]]
* UnscrewedSaltShaker: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2008/09/24/082-super-star/ "Revenge of Meta Knight."]]
* UnsoundEffect: "[[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2009/03/20/149-hero/ "Boil, Boil."]]

* VerbalTic: [[VideoGame/FZero Captain Falcon]], who [[LargeHam loves to call out Falcon-anything]].
--> [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2008/06/26/captainfalconatchurch/ "FALCON PENANCE!"]]
* VictoryIsBoring: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2012/12/18/456-ganondorfs-holiday-vacation/ In 456]], Ganondorf travels to ''[[Franchise/{{Metroid}} Zebes]]'' but he accidentally ends in ''[[Franchise/{{Kirby}} Dreamland]]''. He quickly conquers the place... and just so quickly he finds out he hates it: the realm is unbearably cute, the local hero will not fight him because he thinks the King of Evil taking over sounds ''funny'', the citizens are apathetic and do not care who the king is, and his palace's servants are so sugarily servile and solicitous it disgusts him. [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2012/12/25/358-home/ Before long]] he gets fed up with being tucked in the bed and having his back scrubbed as he takes a bath, and he returns to Hyrule to rule the place with tyranny, violence and fireball-throwing.
* VideoGame3DLeap: Referenced in "The History of Nintendo" when reaching ''Super Mario 64'', which is demonstrated by Mario running on a 2D X-Y graph, and then runs on the new Z-axis.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: Deconstructed in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2009/11/20/200-ode-to-minions/ Strip 200,]] which makes you realize what a horrible, horrible person you are for playing the average Mario game the way the developers intended.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow:
** Parodied in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/456-ganondorfsholidayvacation/ "Ganondorf's Holiday Vacation,"]] where he tries to go to [[VideoGame/{{Metroid}} Zebes]] but ends up in [[Franchise/{{Kirby}} Dream Land]]:
--->'''Waddle Dee:''' Are you ready for your goodnight kiss, sire?\
'''Ganondorf:''' I '''hate''' this place.
** Kirby finally realizes [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/438-20thanniversary/ how creepy the foes he's fought were.]]
* VillainDecay: Parodied in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2013/02/08/462-benign-tragedy/ Benign Tragedy]] where Bowser kidnaps Peach again and it's treated more as an annoyance rather than a threat. The AltText hammers it in further.
--> ''We look forward to teaming up with you again next time there's a REAL villain in town.''
* VillainSong: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/12/25/300-a-simple-request/ "A Simple Request"]] is this. Also overlaps with AntiChristmasSong.
* TheVillainSucksSong: "You're a Mean King, Dedede"
* VisualPun: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/05/31/249-nasty/ Comic #249]] is advertised [[OverlyLongGag repeatedly]] as containing "excess gore, racism, foul language, public indecency, and frightening imagery". None of them are quite as severe as expected:
** Excess gore: [[spoiler:A number of televisions displaying Al Gore.]]
** Racism: [[spoiler:The starred [[Creator/DrSeuss Sneech]] in the upper left corner, and a [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Farfetch'd]] carrying a "[[FantasticRacism no Psyduck]]" sign.]]
** Foul language: [[spoiler:[[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Farfetch'd and Psyduck]] arguing. Okay, maybe that's ''fowl'' language.]]
** Public indecency: [[spoiler:The Sneech and the Pokémon are naked.]]
** Frightening imagery: [[spoiler:A particularly creepy image of [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Tingle]]. Teddie too if you're familiar with ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}''.]]
* WackyMarriageProposal: Matt considered proposing to his girlfriend through the comic, complete with a Waluigi Time joke... but ultimately ended up going with a more serious proposal. Still, in terms of WhatCouldHaveBeen, it's pretty wacky. ("Expecting a ring? TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME.")
* TheWallsHaveEyes: Being that [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda the Zelda series]] is so fond of this trope, Brawl in the Family [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2009/03/02/144mountainpeephole/ brought it to its logical conclusion.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2009/02/23/142-stumble/ There's also the Mario side of this trope.]]
** [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2013/05/28/491-marshy/ And 491 explores the]] sheer, undiluted implications.
* WeaksauceWeakness: [[spoiler:In the Christmas Carol arc, even after growing up Bowser Jr. never got over his fear of [[VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine water]]]].
* WeHaveReserves: [[PlayedForLaughs Played for]] [[BlackComedy laughs]] in [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2014/04/15/559-tacticians/ # 559]] when pointing out the main difference between ''VideoGame/FireEmblem'' and ''VideoGame/AdvanceWars''.
* WhamEpisode: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2014/07/24/580-world-eight-four/ Strip 580,]] the beginning of the end.
** WhamLine: From that same strip: [[spoiler:"The comic is ending."]]

* WhatYouAreInTheDark: King Dedede reveals his true nature [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/387-dreamlandbetrayal// on a dark, cold winter night.]]
* WhenIWasYourAge: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/11/18/293-the-new-generation/ And the cycle begins anew.]]
* WhiteAndGreyMorality: The villains usually have a soft side to them, the heroes can be honest but have some bad habits, and most of the trouble of the world-ending kind is usually unintended. The only truly evil character is [[spoiler:Dark Matter]].
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Played for laughs after [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2008/07/03/peach/ Kirby swallows Princess Peach.]]

* WorldOfSnark
* YouBastard: "Ode to Minions" has shades of this, since it calls out gamers on how heartless and cruel it would be to slaughter video game enemies for their amusement if said video game enemies were innocent people with family and friends. However, even though they may be innocent people, the minions will still kill the heroes without hesitation.
* YouHaveResearchedBreathing: [[http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/02/22/219-moveset/ this]] episode humorously deconstructs the Pokémon games' use of this trope.
