WhenLifeGivesYouLemons chop them up in midair with a huge sword. If life gives you strawberries, watermelons or coconuts, same thing. After all, you ''are'' a [[GratuitousNinja ninja]].

''Fruit Ninja'' is a game developed by Creator/HalfbrickStudios in which you slice fruit with a virtual sword in a limited amount of time, trying to avoid slicing bombs as you go. Extra points and combos are awarded for slicing at least three fruits with one swipe. There are three main game modes; ''Classic'', ''Zen'', and ''Arcade''.

* In ''Classic'', players must try to slice all of the fruit and avoid bombs, because [[GameOver the game is over if they miss three of the former or hit one of the latter]].[[labelnote:However...]][[Every10000Points Lost lives can be restored by reaching multiples of 100 points on their score!]][[/labelnote]] A bonus pomegranate randomly shows up that you slice repeatedly for as many points as possible before it explodes.
* In ''Zen'', no bombs appear, and players aren't penalized for missing fruit, but there is a 90 second time limit. The goal is to slice as many fruits as possible before the time runs out. High scores in this mode will greatly depend on your ability to combo.
* In ''Arcade'', like Zen mode, players aren't penalized for missing fruit, and there is a time limit, this time being just 60 seconds. Three bonus bananas will appear at random: Frenzy (fruit starts to uncontrollably shoot out from the sides of the screen, and no bombs appear), Double Points ([[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin self-explanatory]]) and Freeze (slows down all the fruit and bombs, and stops the timer). Their effects can be combined (as in, one can get Double Points, then Frenzy, and rack up a massive score). Getting many combos in a row awards you bonus points, and begins a Blitz. During a Blitz, more fruit shoots up at a time and quicker, and every few consecutive combos awards more bonus points. If you don't get a new combo in a few seconds, the Blitz ends. Slicing a bomb takes 10 points off your score, and instantly ends a Blitz if you're in one. At the end, after slicing a bonus pomegranate, you are given three different score bonuses that depend on your performance. This mode was released as a standalone game for Facebook called ''Fruit Ninja Frenzy''.

!!Welcome to the dojo, ninja. Your objective: become a master of slicing tropes!
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: The blades are sharp enough to cut ''coconuts'' right in half with one slice and [[MadeOfExplodium make a bomb explode by simply touching it]].
* AllThereInTheManual:
** ''Fruit Ninja Origins'' web-series introduced a proper plot for the franchise. The game now takes place in "Fruitasia", where 4 students (Katsuro, Mari, Han and Nobu) learn the way of cutting Fruit under Sensei's guidance.
** More appropriately titled ''Fruit Ninja: Ancient Origins'' comic book by Keenspot introduces a proper backstory for each character. Some of them, such as Katsuro being a lone urchin, were acknowledged in ''Fruit Ninja 2''.
* AndYourRewardIsClothes: Well, not ''clothes'', but you can unlock new backgrounds and blades. As more straight example, ''Fruit Ninja 2'' allows you to unlock various characters and skins for them. This has been downplayed since the 2.0 update as all blades now have special abilities.
%%* AwesomeButImpractical: Quadruple wielding using your device's multi-touch.
* CartoonBomb: You have to avoiding the round dark bombs that are mixed among fruit. Slicing the bombs results in an instant GameOver in Classic mode, and the deduction of ten points in Arcade mode.
* {{Crossover}}: For Halloween 2014, the game got a ''Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}}''-licensed skin for free. This includes the Ghostbusters blade which has a special ability involving crossing the streams and the Ghostbusters Dojo, which spawns a ghost trap every few moments which players can slice
* ChainsawGood: Yes, there's a Chainsaw as an unlockable blade which has a higher chance to crit watermelons. This blade was made in response to ''Series/{{Mythbusters}}'' season 15 episode 4, in which the myth of "Can you easily slice through large amounts of thrown fruit, as in Fruit Ninja?" was tested. After concluding that it was busted using a sword, Jamie tested this using a chainsaw. This is the reason why the effect when that kind of crit is done is styled after the series logo and the blade's background is a blueprint.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In his [[https://youtu.be/gOAUPN0XIno?si=ve3C4roZb5snNj3l debut]], Gutsu the merchant was depicted as a very clumsy character with goofy voice. By the time ''Fruit Ninja 2'' released, he's seen ObfuscatingStupidity more than anything, complete with more muscular build and manly voice.
* DualWielding: You can do this, thanks to multi-touch. It's even possible to ''quadruple'' wield for the same reason.
* ExcusePlot: Exactly why is a ninja cutting up fruits? The only reason (at least originally) given was, "All Ninjas hate fruit!" Subverted by the time ''Origins'' became the series' part of identity; All this cutting is explained to be a part of the training to master "Juice Jitsu", a martial art in which fruit gives the power to fight evil.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: The main character and mentor to other ninjas doesn't have any name other than Sensei.
* FatalFireworks: Firecracker Blade in the original and Firework Blade from ''Puss in Boots'' make use of fireworks, being just as effective against fruit as the other blades.
* FruitOfTheLoon: Weirdly inverted. You just need to destroy ''fruit''.
* GratuitousNinja: It's not just some average person or even a teppanyaki chef cutting the fruit. It's a ''ninja''.
* GroinAttack: "Katsuro Training Day" short has Katsuro being on the receiving end of one by a watermelon after completing Sensei's course. To add to the injury, he asks [[TemptingFate if there's anything else they got]] before broken machine fires one last fruit at him.
* HotBlade: Flame Blade and Magma Blade in original, Lava Blade in ''2''. Downplayed as they are about as powerful as non-fire blades.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: In mobile versions, your fingers are virtual katanas.
* LOL69: The "TEE HEE" achievement is unlocked for getting 69 points.
* MartialArtsForMundanePurposes: The game is about using your cool katana to chop up fruit.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: Cutting fruit, a normally mundane task is cool because you're doing it like a ninja.
* NinjaSchool: Sensei's Dojo is the series' main setting, a place where Sensei teaches "Juice Jitsu" to his students. While it mainly involves slicing fruit, it's said to give great powers.
* OneHitKill: Hit the bomb in ''Classic'' and it's an instant GameOver, as compared to missing fruit three times.
* {{Retreaux}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW4d7lRGdvU 8-Bit DLC]] for the XBLA version.
* RuleOfThree: Slice 3 or more fruit in one swipe; combo. Miss 3 fruits, GameOver. There's also 3 main game modes.
* ShoutOut:
** Kitchen and Farm Dojos, which were originally named after ''Yes Chief!'' and ''Top Farm'' - games published by Halfbrick.
** ''[[VideoGame/GuitarHero Fruitar Hero]]'' mode from ''2'', which is ''Fruit Ninja'' as a RhythmGame.
* SmashingWatermelons: In this game, the goal for the player is to slice as much fruit as they can when they're in the air, and one of those fruits are watermelons.
* SwordLines: This is all you actually see of your blade(s) - except, of course, in the VR version. You can even unlock trails with different colors and effects.
* TeamPet: Truffles is a small pink pig and Gutsu's companion, often seen hanging around the other ninjas.
