Oakland is a city on the East Bay section of the San Francisco Bay in UsefulNotes/{{California}}.

Oakland is often described as "The City Across the Bay," "the Town," and various other names comparing it as to be basically UsefulNotes/SanFrancisco's younger brother. Oakland is most well-known for being the home of UsefulNotes/MajorLeagueBaseball's Athletics[[note]]Oakland was previously the home of the [[UsefulNotes/NationalHockeyLeague NHL]]'s California Golden Seals, who moved to Cleveland as the Barons in 1976 (and subsequently folded two years later, being the most recent Big Four team to fold), the [[UsefulNotes/NationalBasketballAssociation NBA]]'s Golden State Warriors, who moved across the Bay in 2019, and the [[UsefulNotes/NationalFootballLeague NFL]]'s Raiders, who moved to UsefulNotes/LasVegas in 2020 (and had earlier moved to UsefulNotes/LosAngeles in the 1980s before returning to Oakland for a second stint in the mid-90s). After nearly two decades of failing to get a new ballpark either in Oakland or elsewhere in the Bay Area, the A's plan to join the Raiders in Vegas by 2027, much to Mark Davis's chagrin.[[/note]], high crime rate, and for being the ending-point of the Transcontinental Railroad.

The population currently stands at 420,000, making Oakland the 45th-largest city in America. It is a major West Coast port, in fact one of the five most important ports in the country.

[[AC:Film]]
* The opening and closing scenes of ''Film/{{Black Panther|2018}}'' take place in Oakland, in reference to the political party of the same name that was founded there (and the fact that it's director Ryan Coogler's hometown).
* ''Film/{{Moneyball}}'' is about the Oakland A's and their efforts to remain competitive with a fraction of the budget that their better-funded competitors have.
* ''Film/SorryToBotherYou'' entirely takes place here.
* ''Blindspotting'' is also entirely set here, complete with slang and the commentary on the city's rapidly increasing rate of gentrification, with the leads/writers hailing from the city.

[[AC:Live-Action TV]]
* The later seasons of ''Series/SonsOfAnarchy'' are often set in Oakland away from the eponymous motorcycle gang's homebase of Charming (a fictional town located 50 miles from Oakland).

[[AC:Music]]
* "iii. Telegraph Ave ("Oakland" by Lloyd)" by Music/ChildishGambino is about The Boy, the main character of ''because the internet'', driving from UsefulNotes/LosAngeles to Oakland to visit his ex-girlfriend while the fictional song "Oakland" plays on the radio.

[[AC: Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/WatchDogs2'' features Oakland as part of its Bay Area setting, where it is also the hometown of the game's protagonist.

[[AC: Web Original]]
* ''[[{{Literature/Takotsubo}} Takotsubo: The story of a superhero]]'' on [=HitRECord=] is a {{Deconstruction}} of the SuperheroOrigin that follows Cord Cai, [[GenericEthnicCrimeGang an Asian-American gangster]] who lives there. Oakland's unfortunate reputation as a WretchedHive features heavily, since the twenty-something Cord spent his life [[StopBeingStereotypical trying to get out of the streets,]] [[TragicVillain only to start a gang in despair after his fiance dies]]. WordOfGod says that Cord is a superhero but can't acknowledge it due to InternalizedCategorism, and the tagline states that "Despite his own beliefs, he is in fact [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre a hero.]]"
