[[folder:J]]
* JadeColoredGlasses: Generally people tend to get these as they get older and more experienced.
* TheJailBaitWait: Depending on the state, you may not even have to wait. Some go as low as 14. Some have "Romeo and Juliet" clauses allowing a young adult to go ahead with an older teen. But yes, people have been known to do this.
* JaywalkingWillRuinYourLife: Some relatively small offenses that hurt no one can still get felony charges with all of their impacts on one's life, or can get one beat or shot by police. In some cases, people trying to get away with a minor offense get caught in a SnowBallLie and end up jailed on perjury or other similar charges.
* JeopardyIntelligenceTest: Many Jeopardy players have tried out on the show because they'd do so well playing along at home.
* {{Jerkass}}: Sadly, these types of people are insanely common.
* JerksAreWorseThanVillains: In a way, since most people are more likely to complain about the people in their personal lives than a dictator or criminal. The dictator is only known through the news and often distant while the jerk is in person and close and only known to someone.
* JerkassAtYourDiscretion: Many bullies and abusers only hurt their victims when authority figures aren't around because they ''know'' they'll get in trouble if people see.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Unpleasant people can still make valid points, even if it doesn't make their behavior any less unpleasant and/or deserving of punishment.
* JerkJustifications: Some of these types of people justify their abrasive behavior, which is common with aggressors in abusive relationships. Some of them are just making excuses, but others [[ObliviouslyEvil honestly believe they are right to be mean]].
* JerkassToOne: Also sadly, they are some people who treat one person badly while being nice to everyone else, or even treat a few people far worse than others.
* JerkassWoobie: It's pretty common for mean people to be that way due to some inner pain, insecurity etc. There's even a saying "Hurt people [[AmbiguousSyntax hurt people]]."
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** Many jerks aren't that bad, a lot of the time they're just sensitive and easily hurt. Most people are selfish to an extent and act in their own best interest, while perhaps paying little attention how it might affect others, but at the same time they're rarely interested only in themselves and are capable of being nice and do nice things for others.
** Cats in general fall into this; they may seem very aloof and antisocial... but there have been a few stories of cats saving their owners' lives.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Very common in real life.
** Some jerks might ''occasionally'' do a nice thing, but ultimately they still are unpleasant, toxic, and/or selfish people to their very core, and would just-as-likely do a Jerkass thing in a heartbeat.
** Many abuse victims are convinced that they can "change" their abusers and reason with them, despite that many of these abusers do not care.
* JewsLoveToArgue: The Talmud itself is a result of legal arguments regarding Jewish religious laws. This emphasis may have also been a contributing factor in the amount of Jewish lawyers, [[UnfortunateImplications stereotypical]] and otherwise.
* JoggersFindDeath: Became a trope (and an overused one) because it is truth: hikers and joggers (and walkers in general) tend to find bodies because they have reason to be out in areas where they may be dumped or where crimes may have happened and/or they aren't driving by fast in a car.
* JokeItem: Plenty of them exist, some for the point of using them in practical jokes, others for many other reasons.
* JokerJury: War crimes trials held by the victorious nation can be seen as this. As can very biased juries, for racial or other reasons. Attempting to prevent this is the reason that the ''voir dire'' process exists in some countries that use juries.
* JokeWeapon: Happens in RealLife. In one variant, carried to look like an actual WeaponForIntimidation but with no intent of actually being used. In another variant, used - there was at least one case of someone being slapped with a fish.
* JumpOffABridgeRebuttal: Used by everyone's dad.
* JumpScare:
** When you're not paying any attention to your surroundings, the sudden appearance of an attacking predator or falling debris can easily create this effect.
** And if something attacks you with this trope, you can retaliate with a blood-curdling shriek with the capability of scaring off your dreaded opponent.
* JurisdictionFriction: Because a significant portion of major crimes can involve multiple jurisdictions.
* JustifiedCriminal: No specific real life examples are allowed, but there are quite a few of them, both famous and just everyday people. The trope very much tends to be invoked in areas where the rich/poor divide is extreme, or the form of SelectiveEnforcement tends to excuse only [[ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney the rich.]] It's also a common reason for riots and the like in such cases - people who loot or destroy/vandalize symbols of the classes above them during a class/race type riot often see ''themselves'' as this, whether they are or not.
* JustJokingJustification: Used in a lot of friendships based on heaping insults.
* JustTheFirstCitizen: Augustus is the best-known example, taking the title "princeps" (which, at the time, meant roughly "first citizen").
[[/folder]]

[[folder:K]]
* {{Kaiju}}: ''Amphicoelias'', the largest dinosaur of all time, sported a length of 200 feet from head to tail, a height of 32 feet from sole to scalp, and a weight of 98 tons.
* KaleidoscopeEyes: Some people have eyes that can change with the lighting of a room - these are generally people whose eyes somehow ended up a greenish blue or bluish green, so depending on lighting they can have blue or green or blue-green. Also happens with dark-brown to black - dark browns will show up as black in some lighting but not vice-versa. Most people, however, achieve this effect with contacts.
* KaleidoscopeHair: Some people do dye their hair a lot, especially in subcultures like punk and VisualKei. Hisashi Imai of Music/BuckTick and [[Music/HidetoMatsumoto hide]] of Music/XJapan, for only two examples, were almost as famous for their many and varied hairstyles as they were for their music.
* KangarooCourt: See JokerJury above. Corrupt legal systems can produce this, as can biased or unfair ones.
* KarmaHoudini: There have been several criminals that have gotten away with [[MoralEventHorizon heinous crimes]].
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: [[/index]]
** There have been numerous [[SerialKiller serial killers]] and other evil people who have avoided capture for years or even decades, only to eventually be caught and punished (some killers even end up murdered themselves).
** Many school bullies usually get away with their bullying behavior since schools usually turn a blind eye to them. Since schools don't make them suffer the consequences of their actions, the universe will eventually give them consequences when they finish school and get into the real world. [[index]]
* KarmicDeath: There are certain criminals like rapists, child abusers, and murderers that get what’s coming to them.
* KavorkaMan: Money can make any man attractive - at least to [[GoldDigger those who want to use the money and run]]. Being a popular artist or musician, no matter what happens to one's looks, means some of the GroupieBrigade will always be around. In a less cynical sense, some do have some charm or appeal aside from their appearance or even ability to provide financially.
* KeepTheReward: Some people do this out of humility.
* KeyUnderTheDoormat: Burglars know this. Don't bother with it.
* {{Kiai}}: See CallingYourAttacks above.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: In the sense of violently attacking an entirely helpless foe with the intent to kill, this can be anything from first-degree murder in a personal situation to a war crime and violation of the laws and customs of war if done during a war. In the sense of trying to make someone feel worse or make their situation worse in hopes of driving them over the DespairEventHorizon, it's one of the more cruel forms of bullying.
* KidsAreCruel: As anyone who went through middle school can attest, some kids can be. However, with the right kind of parents, this can be {{Averted|Trope}} [[RousseauWasRight just as often even in real life]]. And besides, there are people out there who have had such a bad experience with this trope that [[ChildHater they become too bitter to notice when kids are actually being genuinely nice to them]].
* KidsHateChores: Many children seem to hate doing chores either because their parents are forcing them to do it and/or they rather play video games.
* KidsHateVegetables: Children's tastebuds are undeveloped and have a sensitive reaction to the bitterness of veggies.
* KidsLoveDinosaurs: Dinosaurs are cool and awesome according to some children in RealLife.
* KidsPreferBoxes: And bubble-wrap. Sweet, sweet bubble-wrap. Anyone who has ever owned a cat can also attest that boxes are the quickest way to catch a cat.
* KillerRabbit: A great many animals are meaner, sharper, stronger and/or more poisonous than they look. This is why you don't play with wild animals. And why you ask before playing with pets that aren't yours.
* KillItWithFire: Just about anything can be killed when set on fire.
* KillItWithIce: Just about anything can also be killed when frozen in ice.
* KillItWithWater: Anything with lungs can be killed when water floods said lungs.
* KillSat: The Strategic Defense Initiative, more commonly known as Project Star Wars. Similar projects are in the works, mostly because [[EnergyWeapon lasers are cool]].
* KillSteal: Anyone who's played some older MMO games (e.g. ''VideoGame/EverQuest'', ''VideoGame/RagnarokOnline'') has likely experienced this.
* KissTheCookApron: Aprons printed with the message to "Kiss the Cook" or some variation of the message, thought to be derived from a phrase in 1800s Italy where giving a cook a kiss was a sign of satisfaction with a meal. Commonly worn in real life as a popular kitchenware design.
* KlatchianCoffee: Exists in real life with some coffee+energy drinks, multiple espresso shots, or coffee brewed with coffee among others, and can be quite a shock to those who are caffeine sensitive or who don't regularly consume caffeine. Then there's the far more illegal "biker coffee," which consists of coffee + a dose of amphetamine or methamphetamine.
* KnightErrant: Yes, there were landless knights that roamed the Earth without a master.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Though they're usually romanticized in [[TheThemeParkVersion Theme Park versions]] of [[TheMiddleAges Medieval European history]], there were plenty of knights that did fit the ideal archetype of a heroic, brave warrior that saved the princess and followed the code of chivalry.
* KnightInSourArmor: Some people believe that HumansAreBastards and that BeingGoodSucks. That doesn't stop them from trying to be good.
* KnightTemplar: Strong beliefs can drive people to do ''very bad things'' while thinking they are doing only the best/what "God" wants/etcetera.
* KnockingOnHeathensDoor: Door-to-door proselytizing does exist, most infamously with the Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: You've likely met at least one.
* KnuckleCracking: And no, it doesn't actually hurt your knuckles or cause arthritis, although it can be annoying to other people.
* KungShui: Some BarBrawl incidents have done this. One legendary Visual Kei brawl in Japan ''burned the bar where things went down to the ground.''
[[/folder]]

[[folder:L]]
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: Seriously, lab coats are everywhere in real medical and laboratory settings--and for good reason. Besides the trope-accurate function of visually identifying medical or scientific staff, they also provide protection for the garments worn underneath them (which may be much harder to discard when soiled) and a convenient source of pockets (which may be sadly lacking in scrubs).
* LaboriousLaziness: The construction of "man caves" and "mom caves." Putting effort, money, or time into cheating of any kind when the cheating actually takes more time or money with similar results to ''not'' cheating. Working at professions such as day labor and film/TV extra when one ''can'' and has no reason (from other commitments to being unable to get employed) not to get a steadier job.
* LackOfEmpathy: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (lack of empathy combined with an inflated view of oneself [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex that often covers up deep insecurity]]). Antisocial personality disorder which encompasses the psychopath (lack of empathy and common sense) and TheSociopath (lack of empathy but trainable to "behave" ''if behaving in a certain way benefits them''). Some ''but not all or even most'' autism spectrum disorders, though in autism it tends toward "lack of ability to express empathy in a way that is understood by neurotypical people." Some schizophreniform disorders and forms of dementia, though in those it tends toward "I don't care about anything at all."
* LandlineEavesdropping: In the days of abundant landlines, if your house had more than one handset (as was common in the developed world) it was easy to listen in on other people's conversations from the extension in the other room.
* LanguageBarrier: People being unable to communicate due to not sharing a language is as old as civilization.
* LapPillow: Occasionally, a female person will allow a male person to use her lap as a pillow either to help him recover from a convulsive seizure or to help him have a more comfortable sleeping position whenever there's no available beds lying around anywhere.
* LaserGuidedKarma: The saying "you reap what you sow" exists for a reason.
* LastNameBasis: Some people go by their last names.
* LastSecondWordSwap: A way to invoke CurseCutShort, if you need to do so.
* LatePregnancyRealization: It has happened. Some mothers have mistaken their pregnancies for menopause, or they don't show traditional symptoms (including not gaining weight), or their periods are already irregular, or they are in denial.
* LaughingMad: There are two real-life variants.[[/index]]
** A symptom of an active schizophrenic or manic episode in real life, called "inappropriate affect."
** A more benign version occurs when someone confronted with bad news or tragedy either absolutely disbelieves it ("you've got to be kidding, don't joke about that -laughs - OhCrap... you aren't?") or finds something darkly humorous about it and can't help but to laugh ("Wait a minute -laughs, tries to stop laughing - you are seriously telling me that while running from a [[KillerRabbit pack of wild hyenas]] escaped from the zoo, he got run over by a bus full of [[TheWestern rodeo]] [[NonIronicClown clowns]] and dragged himself [[ToiletHumor to the safety of a Port-O-John]] only [[ExplosiveStupidity to explode it when he lit a cigarette inside?]]") These people aren't schizophrenic, manic, or even mentally ill - the first, absolute disbelief, is actually one of many ''normal'' ways to respond, and the second is not necessarily indicative of mental state as much as of the incident itself being tragicomedically stupid. The way to tell the difference is that people with inappropriate affect generally don't know or care they ''shouldn't'' laugh, while someone laughing out of disbelief will usually stop when the truth of what happened sinks in, or someone laughing at a Website/{{Darwin Award|s}}-worthy fate will acknowledge that they probably shouldn't be laughing but they are.[[index]]
* LaughOfLove: It has been noted that when a person is in love with someone else, even their lame jokes will become hilarious to the person in question, and they tend to laugh more when they are around that person. As a result, this is a reliable means of identifying if someone is in love with you (especially if the person in question is a girl).
* LawfulStupid: A big and serious problems of our world. This is also the main source of tropes like NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished, done when law enforcers apply laws mindlessly and without also applying common sense. There are also people who say you shouldn't ''never'' break the law even to save your life (such as driving over the speed limit to escape a SerialKiller), even though the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necessity_(criminal_law) law itself]] usually disagrees with such positions.
* LawOfInverseFertility: In most wealthy countries, it's usually older couples who plan to have children, while young couples tend to lack the responsibility, financial resources, and often the desire. Since fertility tends to peak at a young age and drop off over the years, this can be a real problem. When couples who are trying to conceive are unable to, it can cause stress and relationship problems, which makes getting pregnant even harder.
* LazyBum: Some people are too unmotivated to do anything.
* LazyHusband: Any wife out there knows the drill. These typically exist in the form of deadbeat dads who [[{{Manchild}} behave like children themselves]] and constantly rely on their wives to support them.
* LeanAndMean: Anorexia nervosa and starvation in general can lead to mood swings and cruelty toward others, either for their being "fat" or "lazy" or somehow else not measuring up to the starved standard, or out of the need to feel better about oneself and one's own place for which one is "working so hard."
* LeaveBehindAPistol: Intentionally leaving a suicide method in reach of someone likely suicidal has happened.
* LeeroyJenkins: They have existed in real life firefighting and military and police operations. In fact, long before the trope namer, there was the infamous "Charge of the Light Brigade" as a military example.
* LensmanArmsRace: World War II and the Cold War. Consider: the Germans only made very primitive payload rockets with long range work somewhat in WWII, and America couldn't launch a rocket as late as 1957. We were on the moon just over a ''decade'' later. (UsefulNotes/TheSpaceRace being guided on both sides by [[HerrDoctor genius German rocket scientists from Nazi Germany]], who were unaware of each others' existence as competitors for quite some time). And nothing says "my [[strike:dick is bigger]] kung-fu is better than yours" like the ever-more-powerful nuclear weapons tests of the 50s and 60s.
* LeonineContract: Not only exists, but is called that in courts of law.
* LessDisturbingInContext: Why "keyword spying" by the govermnent and/or police is a bad idea, and "zero tolerance" almost as bad. There are plenty of words and actions and events in life that context makes entirely innocent. For example, "a girl in a class hands her classmate a pill" can be drug dealing or poisoning an allergic person, or it could be a person who knows her friend isn't allergic to aspirin giving her an aspirin for her headache. Someone who "threw a newspaper rack through a window" could be an angry rioter or a burglar - or someone who realized the loud sound of the alarm activating would chase off the muggers pursuing him.
* LessEmbarrassingTerm: Just check out this "[[http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/store/product.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302024102&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442133688 one leg pant]]", or as most people would call it, a skirt.
* LethalChef: There are some ''really bad'' cooks, especially in institutions such as schools or the military. And then there's including an ingredient that has very bad effects by accident...
* LethalJokeItem: Some objects are far more dangerous or even deadly than they would look, either by themselves or when combined with something else. They are why unfamiliar {{Joke Item}}s should be taken very seriously. No one knows whether a joke weapon is a ''lethal'' joke weapon, and assuming the latter tends to be a good idea for those interested in staying alive.
* LethallyStupid: There are certain people (and animals) who are too dangerous to stay around, even if they don't intend to cause chaos.
* LevelGrinding: Sheer repetition is the best form of improvement. Well, most effective form, anyway.
* LieBackAndThinkOfEngland: What sex has been for many people throughout history - and still is for many others.
* LifeIsntFair: You can expect people to say this, usually to rationalize their insensitive and unsympathetic behavior.
* LifeOrLimbDecision: People have had to make these, from meningitis patients to trapped hikers and climbers.
* LightIsGood: Most human beings are diurnal and need natural daylight to properly function. Fewer crimes happen during the day (aside from house burglaries and shoplifting in open stores), and natural sunlight allows for the safest travel in most places that aren't deserts. Sunlight also allows plants to photosynthesize nutrients and humans to synthesize vitamin D.
* LightIsNotGood: The flash of a nuclear bomb or of an asteroid exploding in the atmosphere can blind people, and can itself produce such intense heat as to cremate people alive and set everything it touches that is nonreflective on fire. A gamma ray burst can take out entire planets, and gamma radiation from such bursts, nukes, or other sources is carcinogenic, harmful, and can be immediately fatal in human exposure. For individuals with porphyria or with other sun-sensitive conditions, too much sun exposure can lead to disabling, painful sickness. And even for those who aren't so sensitive to the sun, there is a risk of sunburn. Certain patterns of flashing light trigger epileptic seizures in those with photosensitive epilepsy, and overexposure to certain types of flourescent light can cause myriad health issues. Nocturnal people tend to work, live, and feel better sleeping during the early morning/day and awake at afternoon or night. Finally, as noted, most home burglaries and much shoplifting do happen during the daylight hours.
* LikeIsLikeAComma: Especially popular among teenage girls.
* LikesOlderMen: In many couples, the man is usually at least a couple years older than the woman (or other man).
* LikesOlderWomen: Yes, some men and women do like older women.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Sometimes family members do act exactly alike. Feeling like reincarnated clones, even more further with mannerisms, expressions, and interests. We gotta get our temperaments and psyche chain reactions from somewhere, right?
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Psychologists have often stated that many people marry those who have some resemblance to their parents.
* LikeParentUnlikeChild: There are some family members who opposes their families and wants to strive for their own paths and interests
* LikeYouWereDying: Some terminal (and even potentially curable/treatable but likely terminal) patients do this, especially if they are early in the course of their disease and both physically and financially capable of doing so.
* LimitedSocialCircle: People who are introverted tend to prefer a smaller group of people, when they want to be around people at all. Social outcasts also tend to have smaller friend groups since no one outside the group wants to associate with them. Putting that aside, most people's social circles tend to shrink as they get older, especially after they graduate from college (or high school if they didn't attend college). Employment, marriage and children leaves one with less free time to spend with friends, which can cause friends to drift apart, as does moving to a new city and friends dying in your golden years.
* LimitedWardrobe: Happens when poverty and a specific style/interest meet. There's a reason some musicians, for example, seem to wear the same tour shirts over and over again... or why a VisualKei band will use the same costumes or recycle costumes.
* LiteralManeater: Females of some insect species cannibalize their male counterparts upon mating with them.
* LiteralMinded: Asperger's syndrome but not always. More severe autism, more likely. Also machine translations, and those unfamiliar with a language's idiom and syntax.
* LittleMissBadass: There have been a couple of little girls who were surprisingly badass.
* LivingLieDetector: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yawn Dogs have been shown to yawn when a human stranger yawns, but not when said stranger pretends to yawn.]]
* LivingMotionDetector: True for several animal species, which is why said species are so hard to film.
* LivingWeapon: People have committed crimes using attack dogs and snakes.
* LoanShark: Why do people use their services instead of a, you know, bank? Bad credit, my dear Watson. Bad credit.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Often happened re sexual abuse of children in older times or even bad injuries/illness in early childhood, out of fear that the child would be traumatized more (and the adult would break down completely) if told that he/she had been raped by his father or uncle or had almost died from something before his/her third birthday.
* LockingMacGyverInTheStoreCupboard: Surprising but true. The most memorable case would be John and Clarence Anglen's and Frank Morris' escape from Alcatraz (as hard as it is to believe someone would actually fall for the fake-dummy-head-in-the-bed trick).
* TheLoinsSleepTonight: The OTHER reason why you have a spam folder.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Because a lot of the behaviors needed to get and stay at the top of anything range from solitary and not aggressively prosocial (e.g. being a hardcore workaholic) to actively antisocial (e.g. fighting off attacks from competition, either violently or nonviolently). It also doesn't help that there are a lot of people who do want to undermine others or take from them - so being at the top of anything from a business to a scene to whatever also turns every possible friendship or relationship into something with trust issues. On the other hand, [[http://milkthepigeon.com/2015/04/10/why-people-will-hate-you-for-being-successful/ someone can end up losing friends on the road to being successful due to the fact that his/her friends turn against them due to becoming jealous of the individual and not wanting him/her to do better in life]].
* LonelyRichKid: Although modern wealthy parents spend more time with their children than low-income parents on average, children of royalty and nobility were historically raised by servants and knew few children their own age.
* LonelyTogether: Some clubs and groups. Sometimes even online communities like Website/ThisVeryWiki.
* LonersAreFreaks: People often wrongly jump to this conclusion when dealing with loners in real life. Some may well be, but social ostracism doesn't make them less so in most cases.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Definitely happens - especially because many "loners" aren't antisocial or misanthropic in nature.
* LongDistanceRelationship: There are quite a few of these in reality. Extended military deployments or other committments, someone being unable to leave somewhere they've established themselves to start over in their lover's country/city/etcetera, or relationships that begin online (or before that, via mail) among many other reasons, can lead to this.
* LongerThanLifeSentence: Multiple life sentences, or a life sentence plus however many years.
* LongLived: Parrots, turtles, tortoises, elephants, and whales tend to have lifespans surpassing those of us humans in some cases.
* LongNeck:[[/index]]
** ''Mamenchisaurus'', a Chinese sauropod, once sported a thirty-six-foot neck, making it this trope's most extreme RealLife example of all time.
** Modern-day giraffes still use elongated necks to reach high into the treetops and feast upon their leaves.
** Ostriches and emus can reach around and preen their feathers without using sticks as extensions of their heads and necks.[[index]]
* LookingForLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces: Yes, some people do this for a variety of reasons. If you are one of them, getting therapy might be a good idea to help deal with those reasons.
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: Sometimes having a friend that isn't entirely straitlaced and ordered and centered helps one to become more social, more accepting, or see things one otherwise wouldn't. Other times, it doesn't and just damages your reputation for associating with them.
* LooseLips: Derived from the UsefulNotes/WorldWarII slogan "Loose lips sink ships". Giving away sensitive information unintentionally can have disastrous consequences, especially if there are spies around. This can get even worse with the [[TechnologyMarchesOn rise of social media]]. Non-disclosure agreements ([=NDAs=]) exist because of this.
* LoserSonOfLoserDad: Yes, people discriminate against children because of their parents' actions or percieved low sociocultural or socioeconomic status, which often creates a SelfFulfillingProphecy.
* LosingTheTeamSpirit: Sometimes people or even things ''are'' both irreplaceable and vital to the success of a given thing that their loss sends everyone into turmoil on trying to think of how to go on without them. If, for example, a central member of a band that was with it from the beginning or near-beginning and one of its most iconic members with a unique style dies, the odds are fairly split as to whether the band will break up or go on.
* LostHimInACardGame: In cultures where chattel slavery existed or does exist, [[SickAndWrong slaves can be wagered just like any other property.]]
* LostInCharacter: Method actors, Visual Kei artists, and performance artists do this on purpose. Some people who become mentally ill while acting or roleplaying can also do this, though because they've lost touch with reality and CannotTellFictionFromReality.
* LotusEaterMachine: Virtual worlds such as an MMORPG or even a community can become like this to some people. There is a very intense controversy as to whether some psychiatric and/or recreational drugs/medications are the equivalent of this. The side saying they are got [[HijackedByGanon hijacked by the]] ChurchOfHappyology, and the side saying they're not has intense contributions and support from the companies making and marketing them - which means the debate consists much of people flinging FlameBait and [[PolishTheTurd polished turds]] back and forth on a field of AstroTurf.
* LoudOfWar: Loud music or noise that one or both parties find annoying or painful has been used as everything from ColdBloodedTorture by the US military and other militaries (a use that has drawn ''much'' protest from some of the HeavyMetal bands used for the purpose) to a tool in petty neighbor disputes.
* LostWeddingRing: The lengths people have gone to to get them again can be quite amazing.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Because not even all people who fall into the stereotype are hateful and angry toward ''everyone,'' and even most bullying alphas are closer to "jerk" or "narcissist" (which means they do have feelings toward others to some extent) than outright sociopaths or psychopaths.
* LovableJock: Believe it or not, there are some quarterbacks who are rather nice to their less fortunate teammates and don't succumb to jokes about their parental background.
* LovableRogue: Because some "rogue" behaviors are actually more prosocial (at least to their immediate group) than they may seem to society at large (e.g. shoplifting groceries from a big box store might be antisocial on one level, but if all of one's family and friends are broke and one is [[Myth/RobinHood giving the stolen goods]] to support them, the theft is prosocial on that level), because some people do find "rogue" or "outlaw" behavior attractive, and because again, these generally aren't psychopaths or sociopaths even if they are criminals or outlaws.
* LoveAtFirstSight: It happens, more often than one might think, in real life, and research has shown relationships based on this tend to be healthier and last longer.
* LoveHurts: A list of personal examples would likely be the largest and most soul-crushing page on the Wiki. Or on the ''Internet''.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: So, so painfully true.
* LoveMartyr: Nothing to [[DudeNotFunny laugh]] or smile about in real life.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: Happens with fangirls and fanboys falling in love with artists/musicians, and/or other artists who don't meet them privately and know them personally, at least to begin with. The subversion happens sometimes: these people learn who the person really is, and love them the same or even more than before they knew.
* LoveTriangle: They do happen in RealLife. Sometimes they do even end well (a polyamorous relationship where everyone involved is open and communicating), but many times they don't (jealousy, an affair between two of the people with the third left out, someone invoking MurderTheHypotenuse)
* LovingAShadow: "Loveshys" and "Involuntary Celibates (incels)". This is the problem with loving someone from afar.
* LovingBully: It's common for children to hide their feelings for one another by picking on them.
* LowerClassLout: A stereotype and a VocalMinority at best, but unfortunately there's enough of them in the lower classes everywhere to get all lower-class people suspected of being them in some instances.
* LoweredRecruitingStandards: If a military is running low on soldiers (especially in a time of war or emergency where people are being deployed or worse, killed, faster than people are volunteering), this is the next step before giving up on volunteers entirely and just drafting everyone. It can be as minor as a military ignoring juvenile shoplifting convictions or a drug possession arrest or a minor physical or mental illness to as severe as allowing major felons or organized criminals to join the ranks, paying mercenaries, ignoring war crimes, or recruiting/drafting people who are physically incapable of fighting to use as cannon fodder.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: There's a reason why every army of every culture ever (at least until the invention of full plate armor and/or firearms) has used shields.
* LuxuryPrisonSuite: The Hotel Escobar. Pinochet's exile. Elba.
* LyingToProtectYourFeelings: This is actually a common occurrence in RealLife. There are situations in which the truth is too hurtful, offensive, or even unnerving to hear, and so we find it easier and perhaps even more ethical to lie. Examples range from pretending to like someone else's artwork so you don't discourage his/her efforts, to lessening the blow when turning a suitor down for a date (if not breaking up with someone you've been seeing), to telling young children about the stork so you don't have to give them "the Talk" for a few more years. All these examples and more go to show how this trope is very much an everyday reality.
