* AccentDepundent: The SdrawkcabName clue of being backwards for is a lot harder to spot if you speak a rhotic accent than a non-rhotic one, since with the former you're unlikely to recognize the implied "r" at the end of in pronunciation (pronounced in the movie) in the first place.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle: Known as either Le Secret de la pyramide ("The Secret of the Pyramid") or La Première Aventure de Sherlock Holmes ("The First Adventure of Sherlock Holmes") in French (the latter being the Quebecois title).
** Was first released as Das Geheimnis des verborgenen Tempels ("The Secret of the hidden Tempel") in Germany, though newer DVD publications carry the original title.
** In Italy, the movie is known as Piramide di Paura ("Pyramid of Fear").
* DawsonCasting: Nicholas Rowe, who plays Sherlock Holmes, is several years older than most of the other actors playing students. This was probably intentional to give Holmes his necessary height and appearance of superior intellect.
* FollowTheLeader: From two different ends.
** This film is often noted for its striking similarity to the later Franchise/HarryPotter series. To start with, we have the premise of a trio of youngsters solving a supernatural-flavored mystery at an old British boarding school filled with eccentric professors and loads of gothic atmosphere. The three leads even bear a physical resemblance, with the bespectacled young Watson looking like Harry, the gangly young Holmes looking like Ron, and the bushy-haired Elizabeth looking like Hermione. Personalitywise, Ron is more like Watson while Hermione is more like Holmes. Young Sherlock Holmes also features a rival student named Dudley, and while he has the name of Harry's gluttonous cousin, he more closely resembles, in both looks and demeanor, the blond, sneering, aristocratic Draco Malfoy. And the most bizarre twist in all this is that Young Sherlock Holmes was written by Creator/ChrisColumbus, who would go on to direct the first two Film/HarryPotter films.
** From the other end, Young Sherlock Holmes takes a lot of cues from the Franchise/IndianaJones films. In particular, the whole storyline about an evil religious cult that performs human sacrifices in a secret temple is very reminiscent of Film/IndianaJonesAndTheTempleOfDoom, which was released just one year earlier. The UK release was even called Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear. Critics weren't entirely surprised, given that Steven Spielberg was the executive producer! From the Magazine/MAD spoof "Young Sureschlock Homely":
--->Indiana Jones: Hmm, this scene seems familiar, but not the dialogue! Am I in the right movie, Mr. Spielberg?
--->Steven Spielberg: Go back a few pages, Indy - Fool of the Nile needs you more than Sureschlock!
* StillbornFranchise: This was intended to launch a franchise that revolved around the younger versions of Sherlock Holmes and Watson; it even has a SequelHook and TheStinger to set it up decades before they were the norm for such films! However, it was a major box office and critical disappointment, thus ending any chances for another mystery, though a remake has been floated.
