* AbilityOverAppearance: Graham Linehan actually wanted to avoid having a third Irish protagonist after ''Series/FatherTed'' and ''Series/BlackBooks'' but Creator/ChrisODowd gave such a good audition Linehan had to change his mind.
* AccentDepundent: In one episode, Jen is dating a man who is almost perfect except that his name is Peter File, which in British English sounds almost exactly like "paedophile." Moss even [[LampshadeHanging points out]] that the problem wouldn't exist if they were in America (where the first vowel is a short rather than long "e"). You can also notice Roy phrasing it slightly strangely, because if he says it naturally, it doesn't quite work either.
* ActingForTwo: One Asian "actress" plays both female Sulu and female Spock in Douglas' homemade ''Franchise/StarTrek'' porn. For bonus points, the actress, Creator/GemmaChan, also played Ivana in a prior episode of the same series.
* BannedEpisode: In 2020, Creator/Channel4 pulled 2008 episode "The Speech" due to its transphobic content. Graham Linehan slammed the network for this, vowing to never work with them again until it is reinstated.
* TheCastShowoff: Philip Rham, who played Johann the German cannibal in "Moss and the German", was an actual professional cellist (as one could probably guess from him prominently playing the cello in TheStinger of the episode...)
* CreatorBacklash: Creator/MattBerry has expressed regret over the transphobic nature of "The Speech" and agreed that the episode has aged poorly.
* DevelopmentHell: The hour-long GrandFinale special came as a result of none of the people from the series being on the same schedule once the fourth series wrapped, only having a small window of opportunity a few years later.
* InspirationForTheWork: Graham Linehan was inspired to create the series after a PC tech with questionable interpersonal skills paid a house call.
* OutOfOrder: Series 3's episodes were changed in broadcast order; especially noticeable when the episode resolving the series 2 cliffhanger that opened with a recap of said cliffhanger was broadcast third in the run.
* PlayingAgainstType: Less an acting example, more a behind-the-scenes one; Creator/ChrisMorris, mainly known for extremely surreal DeadBabyComedy like ''Series/{{Jam}}'' and dark satire like ''Series/BrassEye'', all of which mainly plays towards a cult audience, plays a rather broad and eccentric boss in a fairly light-hearted and mainstream (if still rather oddball) studio-based office comedy.
* RoleEndingMisdemeanor: The 2008 episode "The Speech" was criticised for its transphobia and, eventually, re-evaluated and pulled from repeats. This prompted Creator/GrahamLinehan to speak out against the critics, drawing more attention to his own transphobic views - which became part of a wider pattern of increasingly obsessive transphobia that overshadowed his writing and (as of March 2023) has effectively ended his career.
* RoleReprise: Creator/RichardAyoade played Moss in a pilot episode for an American remake.
* StarMakingRole: The success of this series led to Creator/ChrisODowd, Creator/RichardAyoade, Creator/KatherineParkinson, and Creator/MattBerry getting to appear in higher-profile projects.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: An American version was planned and a pilot was shot, but not picked up. The biggest effect would have been Creator/JoelMcHale passing up ''Series/{{Community}}'' for it.
** The hour long GrandFinale special was a replacement for a full season 5 which was not made due to everyone being too busy.
* WordOfSaintPaul: Creator/ChrisODowd claims that Moss and Roy met in their first year of college, immediately became friends and then never made friends with anyone else.
* YouLookFamiliar:
** Belinda Stewart-Wilson plays both Denholm's widowed wife in season 2 and Douglas' wife in season 4.
** Dolly Wells was Paula in "The Dinner Party" [season 2] and Miranda in "Jen the Fredo" [season 4]. This one can be a bit harder to recognise than the others; Paula's face is completely covered in bandages and speaks with an English accent, while Miranda's face is uncovered, but she speaks with an Australian accent.
** On a smaller note, actress Creator/GemmaChan played both Ivana and Female Sulu/Female Spock in two separate season 4 episodes.
