Context Trivia / TheAnnotatedSeries

Go To

* ApprovalOfGod:
** Creator/RichardNewman, the voice actor for M. Bison in the ''Street Fighter'' cartoon (and later, [[WesternAnimation/{{Darkstalkers}} Pyron]] and [[ComicBook/BuckyOHareAndTheToadWars Toadborg]]), not only approves of the annotators, but also gave a promotional voice reading of some of the series running jokes as a way of thanking the annotators for helping signal boost a donation to him. This voice reading was added to the channel's theme song video.
** {{Creator/Geibuchan}} has started to promote the channel since the ''Turtles Christmas'' riff.
** While never having directly acknowledged them, [[WebVideo/RebelTaxi Pan Pizza]] has shared a few of the annotators' work through his blog.
** Creator/RobbieRist, the actor who plays Whiz in ''WesternAnimation/KiddVideo'', has seen the ''Kidd Video'' riffs and [[https://twitter.com/trash24713/status/1071541366470004736?s=21 found the whole thing amazing]].
** Creator/MattHill, the voice actor of Captain N from WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster approved the annotators work from a video done through Cameo.
** Similarly Creator/JohnKassir, the voice actor for Fallbot from ''WesternAnimation/DangerRangers'' did a role reprisal while shouting out the annotators at the end of the finale, thanks again to Cameo.
** ''WebAnimation/ReturnToKrocodileIsle'' would be annotated with the blessing of its creator, Alex Henderson. Henderson has also cited the group as being the reason it and the preceding ''Curse of the Crystal Coconut" short were produced.
* ColbertBump:
** Deliberately invoked. The annotators drew attention to a kickstarter helping Richard Newman and helped it reach it's goal. He thanked them by performing a promotional voice reading (see above).
** They've had this effect on a number of the works they've riffed, [[VindicatedByHistory for better]] or for worse. Would you have known that stuff like ''The Nutshack'' or the Bubsy pilot even existed if not for these guys?
* CreatorBacklash:
** ''WesternAnimation/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Droids}}'' for the channel as a whole. To the point of dropping the latter partway through its run.
** ''WesternAnimation/TheNutshack'' wound up being one for Irrelevant. Also doubles as a NeverLiveItDown moment.
** ''Series/VanPires'', and to a lesser extent, ''Revenge of the Red Baron'', are treated as such by [=NewStuffs=].
* DirectedByCastMember:
** One of the annotators appears in "Annotated Daydream", though he didn't let on until everyone had given him an amusing nickname.
** Irrelevant's CrisisCrossOver FanFic.
** "Annotations & You: The Do's and Don'ts", an instructional video made for the Beeupyoumatic that was later annotated, was made by [=GokaiOrange=].
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: The ''[[VideoGame/{{Pico}} Pico's School]]'' video was taken down after the upload happened to coincide with a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
* InMemoriam:
** They sometimes do tribute videos for celebrities who have passed away, such as for Captain Lou Albano, Danny Wells, or C. Martin Croker. Sometimes they're implemented into the riffs as well.
** ''[[ScrewedByTheNetwork Christmas Comes to Pac-Land]]'' got a small one in the Christmas 2016 announcement.
** The final episode of ''Fat Albert'' ends with a dedication to [=GokaiOrange=]'s mother, who passed away at the start of the season.
** One commercial compilation features all commercials featuring Creator/OJSimpson
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Defied. Avirosb has been recording the annotated episodes in case anything causes their work to be lost, that way they can just be reuploaded either on the channel or somewhere else.
* MilestoneCelebration: Downplayed heavily in that their 1,000 subscriber mark was given a quick murmur at the end of a video announcing that they were taking down ''Foodfight!''
** During the Annoverse Run, this happened with ''Disney's Doug'', ''Spider-Man'' and ''Fat Albert'' at the 10k, 20k and 30k annotation mark respectively.
* MissingEpisode: Following Bry's RoleEndingMisdemeanor, various videos that were either heavily influenced by him (such as the re-riff of the ''WesternAnimation/{{Bubsy}}'' pilot, intended as a farewell to his time as a regular annotator) or directly featured him (such as his reading of a ''Advertising/DoctorRabbit'' storybook) were deleted. They have yet to return after his reinstatement following the reveal of Keyosa's side of the story and subsequent RoleEndingMisdemeanor of their own.
* OutOfOrder:
** They swapped episode 5 and 7 of the third season of ''Captain N.'' Why? Because episode 5 was the final episode where the entire main cast as well as Mother Brain, King Hippo, and Eggplant Wizard appeared together.
** ''The Super Mario Bros. Super Show'' and ''Donkey Kong Country'''s schedules were based on the each episode's availability at the time. Along with showing the ''Legend of Zelda'' segments early, the remaining Lou and Danny interludes were peppered throughout ''Darkstalkers'' and the second channel's last videos.
** ''Mega Man'''s "Curse of the Lion Men" was shown two weeks early, since the previous episodes were more Halloween-based.
** From ''Spectreman'' onwards, series longer than 12-26 episodes have only a fraction of their episodes annotated. ''Kirby: Right Back At Ya'', ''Speed Racer'', ''Carmen Sandiego'', ''Butt-Ugly Martians'', ''Captain Planet'', ''Doug'' and ''Street Sharks'' also follow this trend.
** 'The ''Power Team'' segments from ''Video Power'' play with this, with the episodes that were OutOfOrder being reworked to match up with their intended descriptions.
* RoleEndingMisdemeanor: On April 20, 2022, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK6kOE1UNH8 the channel revealed]] that longtime annotator Bry had been kicked out of the group after his sexual misconduct (specifically, sexually harassing several other annotators and showing his pornographic artwork to an underage member) came to light. While he had already "semi-retired" a few years beforehand, the other annotators made it clear that he would never return after this. This decision was eventually reversed the moment it came to light that the person who came out with the information -- Keyosa -- had their own history of stalking other people over Reddit and Twitter, making up stories that painted them as the victim, and had a [[ItsPersonal personal]] vendetta against Bry taking issue with their ItsAllAboutMe behavior that would see themselves removed from the team soon after. Bry would rejoin the group after a nearly four-month absence, but not without [[TheAtoner confirming that he was improving himself and clarifying his side of the event]]. She would also see herself be removed from the ''Annoverse Animated'' trailer during its reanimation for 2023's AprilFools joke video as a result.
** A handful of other annotators also suffered this at different points, including Tisn (for similar, and confirmed, cases of misconduct when regarding children) and Owandt (for being too political in his opinions).
* ScheduleSlip: Starting with ''The Legend of Zelda'', uploads shifted from one episode every few days to every Friday (sometimes slipping to Saturday), due to the reduced number of contributors. The decision to annotate both ''Sonic Underground'' and ''The Super Mario Bros. Super Show'' saw a return to a more frequent schedule, with the former posted on Tuesdays and the latter on Fridays.
** Would eventually happen again during the run of ''Donkey Ollie'' and ''Kidd Video'' on Annoverse. With the latter series running an episode behind of the former beginning with episode 4.
** Episodes of ''Street Sharks'' and ''[=ProStars=]'' have also started dropping a week or two apart starting with their respective 8th episodes.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers: The move from [=TheAnnotatedXperiment=] to [=TheAnnotationStation=] was forced when Ryan Sohmer (author of ''Webcomic/LeastICouldDo'') gave the former account two copyright strikes for their two-part riff on the AnimatedAdaptation of his comic.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork:
** In general:
*** The fateful day Website/YouTube discontinued collaborative annotations. The beeupyou channel now serves as an archive of past works, with the shared channel being how they now do things -- but it took about a month to set up while everyone campaigned in vain for the collaborative annotations feature to be reinstated.
*** Every time [=YouTube=] makes changes to the annotation editor, it's not uncommon to see the Annotators criticize these in the channel comments.
*** [=YouTube=] also took out pause annotations -- though some viewers say the feature was abused anyway.
*** Starting in early May, the ability to add or edit annotations is getting removed from [=YouTube=] altogether, bringing an end to the original Annotated Series.
*** The announcement that all annotations would be removed from [=YouTube=] sent the channel into a frenzy, leading to a mass archiving of the remaining channels still up.
** Specific examples:
*** Due to [=YouTube=]'s copyright rules, the ''Savage Dragon'' videos have been autoblocked. This meant that the show had to be skipped in the ''Five Years'' retrospective. Also, while most of the ''Tricky People'' videos are intact, the first one has been autoblocked, rendering the rest of the riff supremely confusing.
*** Now averted for ''Tricky People'', which was reuploaded onto Annoverse in full, complete with a new riff.
*** The Nutshack has since suffered a similar fate, with all but part 2 blocked for some reason. Though ''why'' anyone would want to claim copyright on it is known only to the person who made the claim.
*** The ''Webcomic/LeastICouldDo'' animated pilot was taken down almost immediately after release by Blind Ferret.
*** ''Sonic X'' is blocked in Japan courtesy of Creator/TMSEntertainment.
*** Happened to a lesser extent with ''WesternAnimation/PacManAndTheGhostlyAdventures'' on [=HammerNationTime=], with it causing problems with Creator/BandaiNamcoEntertainment, who took it down. A similar incident happened regarding ''[[WesternAnimation/PacMan Christmas Comes to Pac-Land]]'' and Creator/WarnerBros.
*** The latter was later uploaded to Google Drive and much like Tricky People it has a new riff to go with it.
*** The unthinkable happened in September of 2017, when a copyright strike on the entirety of ''Riki-Oh'' took down [=TheAnnotationStation=] itself.
*** In regards to the new channel, this happened with "[[WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}} Arthur's Big Hit]]". It was reuploaded onto Dailymotion not long after the takedown.
*** The first episode of ''Disney's WesternAnimation/{{Doug}}'' went straight to Dailymotion, the annotators well aware that Disney would take it down without any hesitation. Despite that, it still got removed from the site and was instead uploaded to Google Drive. With its promotion to main series status, the show remains a Google Drive accessible only series.
*** A copyright claim and subsequent removal of episodes of ''WesternAnimation/TheFonzAndTheHappyDaysGang'' from Bry's personal channel (as well as subsequent takedown of said channel) ended the show's run on the channel prematurely.
*** Episode 9 of ''Kidd Video'' originally included part of the music video for Music/{{Bananarama}}'s "Cruel Summer", only to be edited out a day after release out of fear for copyright. Otherwise subverted as despite all the jokes thrown around about potential copyright takedown due to the show's licensed music, the rest of the episodes remain unedited.
*** Done to ''Cyberchase'' after only two episodes by Creator/{{PBS}}. In this case, Administrivia/TropesAreNotBad as the Annotators have since gone on to say they didn't care much for the show.
*** Subverted with the ''Cans Without Labels'' riff, as the Annotators took it down in light of [[Creator/JohnKricfalusi the creator]]'s behavior toward the workprint version being uploaded upon the short's completion and reuploaded it onto Google Drive.
*** Some of the shows and miscellaneous material the Annotators work with are preemptively uploaded to Google Drive with a redirect video pointing to the link. Examples of this include ''Yo Yogi!'', ''He-Man'' and most recently ''Captain Planet and The Planeteers''
* TechnologyMarchesOn:
** Always called out with the lack of certain modern-day techs. However, when Dr. D says that acne can be cleared out with soap and water, he's called out for making the situation worse -- soap can actually undo the good that facial grease is trying to do.
** The burial of the Nickelodeon time capsule had ''a lot'' of this with most of the tech mentioned being all but gone by the 2000's. Though, whether bicycles will be forgotten by the year 2042 remains to be seen.
** Invoked during "Backside To The Future". A character pulls out a large blocky, metallic-looking folder causing one annotator to riff "this is my cell-phone".
* TrollingCreator: It's in the job description, as the series runs on bad-to-worse material to mock. Some notable ones were Irrelevant, [=HurpDurpManBry=] and [=VonnyFortan=].
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The channel was originally going to annotate ''WesternAnimation/WingCommanderAcademy'' alongside live-action segments from ''The Super Mario Bros Super Show'' (the ones which originally aired with the ''Legend of Zelda'' cartoon on Fridays). But when they discovered that there were no ''WCA'' episodes to be found on [=YouTube=], they decided to annotate ''Darkstalkers'' instead. They eventually did the episode with the Warrior King to complete the four part arc that was in ''Street Fighter'', ''Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm'' and ''Savage Dragon''.
** Instead of the Sonic OVA, ''WesternAnimation/HulkHogansRockNWrestling'' was anticipated to being annotated over the six weeks. It was changed to the OVA at the last minute since WWE hates fun. On the Annoverse channel however, a riff of an episode was posted on google drive.
** For October 2016 Intermission Month, another episode of ''Series/AreYouAfraidOfTheDark'' was scheduled to be annotated. Unfortunately, the annotated riff of an earlier episode (Tale of the Ghastly Grinner) was taken down just before the month was starting, so it was replaced with ''DKTV'' segments.
** Hamsteere was supposed to upload the third week of the 2016 Christmas intermission full-time. Some of his suggestions were ''The Great 911 Adventure'', ''Creator/MuhammadAli: The Animated Series'' and ''VideoGame/MetalGearRisingRevengeance: Live in Concert''. ''The Great 911 Adventure'' and ''Metal Gear Rising Revengeance: Live in Concert'' would later get annotated in April of 2017.
** [=VonnyFortan=], [=ShiningPokeStar=], Countsmegula and [=MagnumBill91=]'s art for ''The Tale of [[Advertising/DrRabbit Dr. Rabbit]]'' didn't make the cut.
** Originally ''WesternAnimation/SkippyAdventuresInBushtown'' and ''WesternAnimation/FlipperAndLopaka'' were originally going to be annotated after ''WesternAnimation/ArchiesWeirdMysteries'' and ''Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa''. But due to a number of reasons and events (Mainly, the annotation editor being removed), both shows were scrapped.
** Originally, there was supposed to be a website that was going to feature annotated shows that couldn't be posted to Website/YouTube due to copyright, but it never happened.
** There were originally going to be more annotated episodes of ''WesternAnimation/WhereOnEarthIsCarmenSandiego'' but the annotators got tired of the series real quick, ending it after 10 episodes.
** Likewise, ''WesternAnimation/TheFonzAndTheHappyDaysGang'' was meant to have a complete run, but as mentioned above, a copyright claim and removal against them would halt the series at the same point as ''Carmen''.
** There were originally supposed to be a selection of various ''{{WesternAnimation/Cyberchase}}'' episodes to be annotated, but stopped after two episodes due to copyright claims from PBS and a lack of interest from the group.
** Some [=Beeupyoumatic1000=] annotated videos can't be uploaded to the Annoverse channel because of lack of interest from [=Beeupyoumatic1000=] annotators especially since the videos don't have enough annotations on them.
** The run of ''WesternAnimation/SaturdaySupercade'' was cut short thanks to the annotators becoming bored with it, swapping it out with more episodes of ''Club Mario.''
