Context Trivia / TerminatorDarkFate

Go To

* ApprovalOfGod: Natalia Reyes has approved of the Grace/Dani ship (coining it as "Drace"), having shared some fanart of it on her Instagram stories.
* AscendedFanon: Fans and writers for non-canon ''Terminator'' works have speculated for years what would happen if a Terminator succeeded in their mission, with some works claiming that Terminators without orders operate in "rogue" or "independent" mode until they can return to Skynet for a new mission. This film makes said mode canon, as the Terminator "Carl" was forced to operate in "rogue" mode permanently, with no Skynet to return to.
* BTeamSequel: Creator/JamesCameron returned to the series, albeit in a producer's capacity. Creator/TimMiller directs this time around.
* BoxOfficeBomb: Budget, $185 million (not including marketing), $325 million (with marketing). Box office, $62,253,077 (domestic), $261,119,292 (worldwide). Despite the vastly improved reception of this film by critics when compared to its two predecessors, ''Dark Fate'' suffered a miserable $29 million opening weekend, the incredible hold of ''Film/{{Joker|2019}}'' not helping matters. And because the movie made only 7 to low 8-figures in ''every'' country (only barely making back its production budget, not counting advertising costs, by the time of its second week of screening), it lost about 130 million by the end of the run.
* CaliforniaDoubling: The majority of the film is set in the outskirts of Mexico City, the central Estado de Mexico, and the Southern United States, but was shot primarily in Spain and Hungary due in part to security concerns (which got ironically subverted in Spain's case, as said in TroubledProduction below). This makes ''Dark Fate'' the first ''Terminator'' film to be shot outside the United States.
* ContentLeak:
** An audio clip of on-set dialogue recorded during production of the film was eventually leaked to Youtuber Mr H Reviews, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOKWkANd3xg who revealed that]] [[spoiler:as a result of timeline alterations, Skynet is no more, and has been replaced by a similar AI named "Legion", as per dialogue between Grace and Dani]]. That twist isn't listed anywhere in the official marketing. [[spoiler:The film proper confirms this.]]
** The same source also leaked an apparent plot summary, which included [[spoiler:an opening sequence where [[TheHero John Connor]] is killed off in a flashback by a T-800 while hiding out with Sarah in Guatemala. The Terminator in question, having fulfilled its primary objective and having no further purpose, decides to integrate himself into society and takes the name "Carl", which is where Dani, Grace and Sarah later find him, having built his own business in the interim]]. [[spoiler:The film also proves this correct.]]
* CreatorBacklash:
** Linda Hamilton isn't very fond of this film. In an August 2022 interview with Empire Magazine, she stated how she felt there was something missing from the film and that the pacing was too fast.
** In a 2022 interview with Collider, Tim Miller admitted that Terminator is an interesting franchise to explore, but that it has been explored enough. While he initially believed that his idea was strong enough to be successful, he ultimately concluded that he was wrong. This pairs with earlier statements that audiences were predisposed to dislike ''Dark Fate'' due to the lackluster performance of previous ''Terminator'' installments. In his words, "People hate it because it's the sixth movie, and Hollywood should be making original movies and not repeating franchises."
** In a May 2023 interview, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that the poor script for this film and the [[Film/TerminatorGenisys previous entry]] is what convinced him to finally step away from the franchise altogether.
** While Creator/JamesCameron himself still has positive feelings on this film, he admitted that it was a mistake to try to bring both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton back to their roles, feeling that he gravely miscalculated how much of the film's younger audience really wanted to see the two aged stars reprise their roles so many years later. He further describes him and Tim Miller having "got high on [their] own supply" in the process of making the movie because of their insistence of working with the film's original stars.
* TheDanza:
** The Rev-9, whose undercover identity is "Gabriel" according to AllThereInTheScript, is played by Creator/GabrielLuna.
** Diego Boneta as Diego Ramos (Dani's brother).
** Alicia Borrachero as Alicia (Carl's wife).
* DarkhorseCasting: This is utilized a lot in the film. Other than Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger and Creator/LindaHamilton reprising their roles and Creator/MackenzieDavis joining the cast, the rest of the cast is much less known. Natalia Reyes, who plays one of the main characters, has had only ''two'' film roles prior to this and both of them were indie films released within a year from each other (one of them being the critically acclaimed ''Birds of Passage'', though). Most of her other screen credits were telenovelas [[NoExportForYou that have never aired outside of Latin America]]. Creator/GabrielLuna is primarily known for playing the [[ComicBook/AllNewGhostRider Robbie Reyes]] incarnation of ComicBook/GhostRider on ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'' and not much else. Diego Boneta has had roles in ''Series/{{Scream Queens|2015}}'' and ''Film/RockOfAges'', but that's about it.[[note]]Outside the English-speaking world, his one role of note was playing Mexican singer Luis Miguel in a Spanish-language Creator/{{Netflix}} {{biopic}} about him, which admittedly was widely successful across Latin America.[[/note]] Jude Collie, who replaces Furlong as young John Connor, has an empty [=IMDb=] page. Contrast that of ''Film/TerminatorGenisys'', which had plenty of well-known actors, such as Creator/EmiliaClarke, Creator/JasonClarke, Creator/JaiCourtney, Creator/MattSmith, and Creator/JKSimmons.
* DawsonCasting:
** Natalia Reyes's ''older'' brother is portrayed by someone ''younger'' than she is.
** Speaking of Reyes, [[spoiler:she also plays Dani as a future resistance leader, following Judgment Day some years after the film's present time, when Grace is a teen.]]
* DearNegativeReader: According to Creator/TimMiller:
-->If you're at all enlightened, she'll play like gangbusters. If you're a closet misogynist, she'll scare the fuck out of you, because she's tough and strong but very feminine. We did not trade certain gender traits for others; she's just very strong, and that frightens some dudes...I don't give a fuck.
* DeletedScene:
** The bar scene in 1998 was originally longer, involving dialogue between Sarah and John, but it was cut down due to the dialogue scenes falling too deeply into the UncannyValley.
--> '''Tim Miller:''' The minute you start hand-tweaking the keyframes for lip shapes, you're fucked.
** Hadrell had a kind of mini-arc, with an extended death scene that was ultimately cut for time.
** An injured Grace talks to an older Dani about volunteering to become an Augment.
** Grace volunteers to time-travel back to 2020, while Dani reluctantly agrees.
** A more detailed description of destroying various time-traveling Terminators by Sarah Connor.
** Rev-9 acquiring info at an Internet cafe via wifi.
** Alicia actually knows what Carl is and what he's done to Sarah. She asks Sarah to bring Carl back if they complete the mission.
** Carl creates a phone app.
* DuelingWorks: The film came out two months after ''Film/RamboLastBlood'', another grittier and R-rated installment from an action movie franchise that originated in TheEighties and starring the other major action movie star from that time, Creator/SylvesterStallone. Both also see the return of an [[CharacterAgedWithTheActor aged protagonist]] of the franchise, Sarah Connor (Creator/LindaHamilton) and John Rambo (Stallone again), who still kicks ass left and right. ''Terminator: Dark Fate'' ended up with the best critical reception and box office of the two by far. This one ended up {{box office bomb}}, however, mainly due to the massively higher budget and marketing compared to Rambo.
* FakeAmerican: Dani's American factory boss Craig and Air Force Major Dean are both played by Brits.
* FakeNationality:
** Natalia Reyes is a Colombian actress and plays a Mexican.
** Dani's father and uncle (Enrique Arce and Tristán Ulloa) are both Spanish.
* HostilityOnTheSet: [[https://www.indiewire.com/2019/10/james-cameron-terminator-dark-fate-editing-creative-differences-1202186192/ Between]] Creator/TimMiller and Creator/JamesCameron, particularly during the editing process. To quote Cameron:
-->The blood is still being scrubbed off the walls from those creative battles. This is a film that was forged in fire.
* LyingCreator: [[spoiler:It was announced in summer 2019 that 42 year old Creator/EdwardFurlong would reprise the role of John Connor as an adult in the film. It turned out that teen John (played by child actor Jude Collie with DigitalHeadSwap) is KilledOffForReal by another T-800 a couple of years after the events of ''Terminator 2'', never getting to become an adult.]]
* TheOriginalDarrin:
** Creator/LindaHamilton returned after Sarah was portrayed by Creator/LenaHeadey in ''The Sarah Connor Chronicles'' and Creator/EmiliaClarke in ''Genisys''.
** In the Japanese dub, Creator/KeikoToda returns as Sarah Connor from the TV Asahi dub of the first film and the in-flight version of the second one, replacing ''a plethora of voice actresses'' who had previously voiced her in other films and dubbed versions.[[note]]In no particular order, Creator/YukoSasaki, Creator/RicaMatsumoto, Creator/AyumiFujimura, Gara Takashima, Yui Komatsuka, Creator/RihokoYoshida and Yurika Hino.[[/note]]
** Linda's European French dub actress from ''Terminator 2'', Véronique Augereau, returns. Marie Tirmont dubbed Creator/EmiliaClarke in ''Genisys''.
* ReleaseDateChange:
** The film's release has been pushed back from July 26, 2019 to November 22, 2019, to avoid competition with ''Film/HobbsAndShaw''.
** Then it was moved to November 1, 2019, wasting no time to take advantage of ''Wonder Woman 1984'' moving to June 2020.
* RoleReprise:
** Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger returns four years after ''Film/TerminatorGenisys'', and 28 years after ''Judgment Day'' for that continuity.
** Creator/LindaHamilton returns as Sarah Connor 28 years after ''Terminator 2'' and 23 years after the last time she played the role in ''Ride/Terminator23DBattleAcrossTime''.
** Brett Azar serves once again as a body double on which a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger's face is recreated, after ''Genisys''.
** Linda Hamilton's European French dub actress from ''Terminator 2'', Véronique Augereau, returns after 28 years.
** In a similar way in the Japanese dub, Creator/TesshoGenda and Creator/KeikoToda return again as the T-800 and Sarah Connor respectively.
** The Brazilian dub also brings back the local voice actors from ''Judgment Day'', yet Mônica Rossi dubbed over Sarah since the first film.
** The Latin American Spanish dub is a partial example, as Creator/LauraTorres reprise her role as Sarah Connor, but not Creator/HumbertoVelez as the T-800, but Creator/BlasGarcia, who is Schwarzenegger's regular dub voice actor. In this case this is justified, as Velez already stated he considered his job in ''Judgment Day'' was a OldShame for him.
* SequelGap: The film is a straight up sequel to ''Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay'' and came out 28 years after it. Otherwise, it came out four years after the last installment, ''Terminator Genisys'', [[{{Unreboot}} which it ignores]].
* TroubledProduction:
** Producer Creator/JamesCameron described the film as being "forged in fire" due to the [[CreativeDifferences numerous heated arguments]] he and Creator/TimMiller had over the film's story. He mostly believed the initial cut of the film was far too long and tried to use his editing experience to give advice, which was typically ignored. Miller, for his part, gave [[https://www.kcrw.com/culture/shows/the-business/terminator-dark-fate-director-on-the-bumpy-road-to-a-box-office-bomb/tim-miller-on-terminator-box-office-woes-im-processing-but-im-very-proud-of-the-movie an interview]] to KCRW offering his side of the story, saying that [[ExecutiveMeddling he lacked creative control]] and that he'd never work with Cameron again after his experience.
** Spain was chosen to double as Mexico for security reasons, but their first days there destroyed such purpose, as the first location chosen by the team was Los Mateos, a particularly bad barrio in Cartagena. Despite police presence around the set, material was stolen by burglars mere hours into production and [[https://www.laverdad.es/murcia/cartagena/detienen-menor-cartagena-20180704111422-nt.html?ref=https:%2F%2Fwww.google.es%2F a police chase took place]], with two juvenile delinquents ending up arrested in a nice reminiscence to John and Tim from ''T2''. The rest of the shooting had to heavily protected by the Spanish government to prevent more thefts and other disturbances.
** Several revealed in [[WebVideo/CorridorDigital Corridor Crew's]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_5JdYo7gN4&t=603s interview]]:
*** The on-location shoot at a car factory in Hungary ran into snags when the workers refused to come in on a Saturday to serve as background extras. Tim Miller went into their break room to beg -- quite literally on his hands and knees -- for their participation. The workers relented.
*** Initially, the plane was built as a "giant 360-rotating set" a-la ''Film/{{Inception}}'', but the warehouse containing the set was found to be filled with asbestos, forcing Tim Miller to shoot on a stationary set.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: See the franchise's [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/{{Terminator}} page]].
* WordOfGod: According to Creator/TimMiller, Grace's last name is Harper.
* WordOfSaintPaul: Creator/MackenzieDavis estimates Grace's age to be 28, although she's probably a little older since this would mean she's 6 in the present yet her present day self is shown to be around 10. (Davis herself was 31 while filming)
* WorkingTitle: If [[https://www.artstation.com/artwork/2xRyvy concept art]] is anything to go by, the production name was "Phoenix".
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: Linda Hamilton revealed that filming started before a script was even finished.
