Context Trivia / Starcraft

* CaptainErsatz: The Kragnans and the Xenterrans from ''WesternAnimation/AlienRacers'' are clear expies of the Zerg and the Protoss.
* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer: This came to pass, considering the unforseen sophistication of the professional MetaGame.
** This led to some amusing assessments of units like over-estimating or underestimating their actual value in the game. For instance, one of the tips in the Prima Strategy Guide was essentially that Battlecruisers are the counter to Scourge. While Battlecruisers can OneHitKill Scourge, a professional player can still out-flank Battlecruisers and score plenty of kills, under the right conditions.
** Even Battle Net's ''[=StarCraft=]'' Compendium had major issues with this, to the point that it didn't sync up with the current metagame due to the site not receiving updates to keep with progaming tournaments. Third party sites like Team Liquid had much more comprehensive strategy guides and unit details, and had better context like how a unit plays in different matchups and if a unit is viable to begin with in said matchup.
* DummiedOut:
** There is a Purifier variation of the Stalker known as the Instigator (with the ability to hold three charges of Blink at once) that is not available for players to use, neither in the ''Legacy of the Void'' campaign or in ''Co-op'' mode. Map editor data and Blizzard Store images imply they were supposed to be usable in the campaign, as well as become one of Fenix's units in ''Co-op'', but in both instances it was replaced by the Adept. They only appear in the mission "Purification", when Artanis' forces activate the Purifiers to protect Cybros from the Zerg. Additional data found in the editor links them to an ability called Anti-Graviton Burst, which would let them pull an air unit to the ground. Coupled with their voice and general appearance, Instigators are essentially [[{{Expy}} the protoss version of Crypt Fiends]].
** The Scout was intended to be usable by the player in the ''Legacy of the Void'' campaign, most likely as a Purifier unit due to its designed, but it was left unplayable in lieu of the Mirage.
** The Mothership Core was eventually removed from Versus mode in favor of reinstating the old system where Motherships are warped in directly. However, any Nexus the player owns was given a similar "Strategic Recall" ability.
* NovelizationFirst: ''Starcraft: Ghost'' had a {{prequel}} novelization called "Nova", which was released in 2006, and was supposed to come out simultaneously with the game. The proper novelization called "Spectres" didn't come out until early 2011. And both are apparently canon, given the events of Nova's cameo.
* UrbanLegendOfZelda: There's a persistent rumor that it started out as a ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000'' game before the liscensing fell through. It draws more inspiration from ''Franchise/AliensVsPredator'' and Chris Metzen's childhood homebrew comic books about an American Civil War [[JustForFun/RecycledInSpace IN SPACE!]]. It's just that the Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss match up very well with the Imperium, Tyranids, and Eldar (Aeldari to you Johnny-Come-Latelies).
** that's mostly due to the grain of truth that WARCRAFT was the warhammer game that failed to happen. But it's a lot easier to see surface similarities between Starcraft and 40k, than it is Warcraft (since there's not really that much that stands out with Warhammer Fantasy since it's all generic tolkien inspired stuff). Also they might not understand what the Thank You to Games Workshop in the SC1 credits is about.
* {{Vaporware}}: ''[=StarCraft=]: Ghost''.
* WhatMightHaveBeen:
** The Zerg were originally the ''Zurg''. [[WesternAnimation/ToyStory1 Three guesses why]] [[{{Creator/Pixar}} the name change]].
** Terrans had a power plant structure that acted as a pylon. This clashed with their BaseOnWheels racial ability and was cut.
** Marines were called "Marauders" and had a grenade launcher ability. Blizzard couldn't balance it, and it now only appears in cinematics. Another option Blizzard toyed with was to give them [[MoreDakka man-portable]] [[GatlingGood "Chaingun Cannons"]] instead of assault rifles ([[TheArtifact incidentally, this could be why the "Infantry Weapons" button is a picture of a minigun]]). The minigun was eventually given to Tychus Findlay in ''VideoGame/WingsOfLiberty'' (when not piloting the Odin) and ''VideoGame/LegacyOfTheVoid'' Co-Op, and the Marauder was made into a separate unit with heavier armor and Punisher Grenade Launchers optimized for AntiArmor.
** The Goliath had a flamethrower and could aim its missiles at ground targets. This was considered too much dakka for one unit to handle for such a cheap cost, so the flamethrower became its own unit-the Firebat. The missile launcher was also reserved for AntiAir. The sprite was also thought to be too skinny, and was bulked up a bit.
** Speaking of firebats, their flamethrowers were longer ranged and set scenery on fire.
** The Science Vessel used to have AT-AT legs.
** Siege Tanks looked like something straight out of ''Command & Conquer,'' having a cockpit sitting between two huge cannons.
** A structure called the "Weapons Plant" was present, and used the Engineering Bay sprite. A structure called the "Chemical Plant" used the Armory's sprite.
** Battlecruisers didn't have their distinctive hammerhead and clearly-visible laser cannon batteries. They looked like flying boats.
** The Vulture's basic attack was to [[FastballSpecial yeet spider mines at enemies,]] instead of just planting them.
** Terran structures used to be able to have all their modules at once. They could also recycle destroyed machines.
** The Academy was supposed to be the Barracks' add-on. For whatever reason, it was split into a seperate building, leaving the Barracks as the sole production structure with no modules.
** Starports had the addon "Drydocks," which repaired nearby aircraft.
** The original Zerg (given the working title "Nightmarish Invaders") wouldn't look out of place in ''R-Type.''
** Drones were a flying unit.
** Mutalisks used to spit acid instead of glave wurms, which was the Queen's basic attack. They still spit (explosive) acid in cutscenes.
** The zerg hatchery already was going to upgrade itself in 3 tiers, but it looked like a big tumor with long tusks randomly peppered around it instead of a castle made out of meat. It also always had that very unfortunate-looking orifice in the middle. At one point, the Hatchery used the Lair sprite and the Lair used the queen's nest sprite.
** The Spore Colony used the Evolution Chamber sprite.
** The Spire was called the "Scoria." It also looked like a mace head.
** Scourges couldn't be spawned by themselves, they popped out of dying Guardians and were called "Avengers." They were also dominated by a huge, gaping maw and a bunch of horn-like appendages.
** Hydralisks had a bulbous crest that resembled the mantle of a squid, and were melee fighters. That is why they never spit spikes during the cinematics.
** Nexi looked very much like stargates.
** The Cybernetics Facility was called the "Gencore."
** The Robotics Facility was called the "Repair Bay." Presumably, it fixed broken protoss vehicles. The original robotics facility looked like a tree made of assembly-line arms.
** The Beacon used to be called the Warp Accelerator.
** Fighters (wraiths, scouts, and mutas) would swoop and bank, with beautiful contrails trailing behind them as they fought. You can probably guess why that was cut, as nice as it looked. Worker units also dropped the goodies they were carrying when they died, which was also a similarly bad idea.
** Units used to have a [[TechLevels tech level]] indicator that rose in response to research (ex Terran Space Marine mk. II).
** Every unit had a basic attack.
