* ActingForTwo:
** Creator/BillHader voices Firewater, Tequila, and El Guaco.
** Directors Creator/ConradVernon and Greg Tiernan voice Sauerkraut Hitler, Toiler Paper, Beer Can, and Pop Bottle (Vernon), and Potato and Noodle Soup Can (Tiernan) respectively.
** Scott Diggs Underwood voices Twink, Gum, Chips, and Pizza.
** Most of the supporting cast (several of them from Creator/TheOceanGroup, and thus no strangers to this) do this as well.
** Hell, even [[Creator/SethRogen Seth Rogen]] himself had a bit of fun with this, voicing both the main character Frank and another named Sergeant Pepper while his wife Lauren Miller Rogen voices Camille Toh and Tampon.
* AllStarCast: The film's cast comprises of top-of-the-line actors and comedians like Creator/SethRogen, Creator/KristenWiig, Creator/JonahHill, Creator/MichaelCera, Creator/JamesFranco, Creator/BillHader, Creator/EdwardNorton, Creator/DavidKrumholtz, Creator/SalmaHayek, Creator/PaulRudd, Creator/NickKroll, Creator/CraigRobinson and Creator/DannyMcBride.
* AwesomeDearBoy:
** According to Rogen, this was the reason why Creator/EdwardNorton agreed to be in the movie.
** Music/AlanMenken was only recruited to write the music for "The Great Beyond", but loved what he saw of the work in progress so much that he begged to stay on to compose the score alongside Christopher Lennetz.
** Creator/ConradVernon [[http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/sacha-baron-cohen-appalled-by-seth-rogens-rrated-cartoon-sausage-party-20160316-gnkrou.html agreed]] to work on the film almost immediately after Rogen described the project to him, as making an R-rated animated film was something he wanted to do since he was a ''teen''. He also cited 1981's ''WesternAnimation/HeavyMetal'' as influential in his decision to work on the film.
* BannedInChina:
** The movie was withheld from release in China for being utterly raunchy, violent, profane, and [[AnimationAgeGhetto animated to boot]]. Between the inevitable cuts and the equally inevitable angry parents taking their kids to see it [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids (because hey, cartoons are for kids!)]], it was deemed safer to just not release the film at all.
** Self-inflicted by the Taiwanese distributor, who canceled the already planned theatrical release so they won't have to deal with angry parents mistaking this as a family-friendly movie. They later changed the release date to November 8, 2016, and also added disclaimers about this being an 18+ movie.
** It is also banned in Malaysia. Unsurprising, considering one of the main characters is a hot dog and the largest religion over there is Islam.
* BeamMeUpScotty: [[http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/why-the-rape-scene-in-sausage-party-wasnt-funny_us_57b33b68e4b04147250fba45 This article about the scene where Douche]] [[spoiler: sucks a juicy box's dick]], misquotes Douche's line "If you fucking tell anyone about this... I'm gonna deny it, bro!" as "If you say anything, no one will believe you.”
** Another one of Douche's lines from the end of the same scene has been misquoted by the Sausage Party fandom: "I'm coming for you!" has been misquoted as "I'm coming for you, bro!".
* BillingDisplacement: Several.
** Creator/JonahHill is given Third billing before Creator/BillHader and Creator/MichaelCera (both of whom have much larger roles in the film) despite [[spoiler: his character being the SacrificialLion to Cera's character]] ([[TrailersAlwaysSpoil not that the trailers tried to hide that fact, anyway]]).
** Creator/JamesFranco and Danny [=McBride=], who ([[SmallRoleBigImpact despite still voicing plot important characters]]) are billed before Creator/PaulRudd and Nick Kroll (both of whom voice the movie's {{Big Bad}}s).
** David Krumholtz, Creator/EdwardNorton, and Creator/SalmaHayek are the last actors billed despite voicing main characters.
* CelebrityVoiceActor: The Brazilian dub not only features a script adapted by comedy troupe [[{{Creator/Backdoor}} Porta dos Fundos]], but also features its members in many roles:
** Gregório Duvivier (who also voiced Short Fuse in ''WesternAnimation/PenguinsOfMadagascar'') voices Barry.
** Rafael Portugal voices Druggie.
** Luis Lobianco voices Douche.
** Fábio Porchat (who also voiced Olaf in ''WesternAnimation/Frozen2013'' and Chuck in ''WesternAnimation/TheAngryBirdsMovie'') voices Twink.
** Antonio Tabet (who also voiced Hank in WesternAnimation/FindingDory) voices Gum.
** João Vicente de Castro voices Tequilla.
** Karina Ramil voices Loretta.
** Gabriel Totoro voices the Pislitz Chips bag.
** Thati Lopes voices Camille Toh
* CompletelyDifferentTitle:
** Czech Republic: ''Buns and Sausages''
** Lithuania: ''Sausage Balls''
** Slovenia: ''Sausage Resistance''
** Ukraine: ''Full Sausages''
* CreatorKiller: Nitrogen's negative reputation after the film made sure that its eventual buyer, effects studio Creator/{{Cinesite}}, all but retired the name once acquired.
* CrossRegionalVoiceActing: The casting is based on the United States, but also used Vancouver-based voice actors to provide the additional voices for the film (with the exceptions of Creator/ConradVernon and[[note]]though Toronto-born[[/note]] Creator/StephanieBeard due to also being L.A. based).
* DoingItForTheArt: Seth Rogen, who made a name for himself with entirely ad-libbed performances in low-key comedies, spent ''a decade'' developing and pitching this movie, bringing in animation experts he'd befriended throughout his career to parody the very movies that they became famous for, all because he loves computer-animated movies.
* DuelingDubs: There are two Brazilian Portuguese dubs: one made in Rio de Janeiro for the theatrical release, and a second made in São Paulo at the Dublavideo studio. Not much is known about Dublavideo's version, except for Vagner Fagundes as Barry.
* FollowTheLeader: In the wake of ''Sausage Party'''s success, a number of other adult animated movies have been announced by various studios, though only a few have been released. Sony itself has also declared its intent to produce further animated movies for adults.
* TheForeignSubtitle:
** Italy: ''Sausage Party: Secret Life of a Sausage''
* IronyAsSheIsCast:
** David Krumholtz (like [[Creator/SethRogen many]] [[Creator/JonahHill of]] [[Creator/JamesFranco the]] [[Creator/PaulRudd other]] actors in the film) is Jewish. The character he voices is a Muslim stereotype who has a rivalry with a Jewish stereotype.
** Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill are Jewish actors who voice hot dogs, which are non-kosher food items.
* MethodActing: Nick Kroll recorded his lines for Douche while wearing the kind of tacky, loose-fitting tank top that stereotypical douchebag men are known to wear.
* MissingTrailerScene:
** While the animation is the same, Camille Toh reads her shopping list differently. In the trailer, she says “Ketchup, mustard, oh! Sausages and buns!”; in the movie, she says, “Lavash, sausages, oh! Honey mustard!”
** Darren is shown noticing he stepped in the turd with the zombified corn.
* NetworkToTheRescue: [[http://variety.com/2016/film/news/seth-rogen-sausage-party-sxsw-raunchy-animated-comedy-1201730320/ According to Rogen]], he had been trying to pitch the film for almost a decade, but no studio was willing to give an R-rated animated comedy a chance, especially since its hey-day during UsefulNotes/TheDarkAgeOfAnimation had long passed. He finally found luck when Megan Ellison, head of Annapurna Pictures, agreed to help finance the film, with Sony (who was initially hesitant to do it) eventually jumping on board to release the film as well.
* NoBudget: The film has a reported budget of [[http://www.econotimes.com/Sausage-Party-actor-producer-Seth-Rogen-Reveals-Small-$30-million-Budget-Critics-Predict-Possible-Box-Office-Flop-213451 $30 million]] (other estimates [[http://variety.com/2016/film/news/box-office-petes-dragon-sausage-party-florence-foster-jenkins-thursday-1201836357/ go as low as $19 million.]]) Keeping in mind that this film has ''A-list voice talent'', and the fact that any film from Disney, Pixar, and [=DreamWorks=] Animation tends to cost around '''three to six times''' that amount, you'd expect this to be a direct-to-streaming movie rather than a theatrically released film. For comparison, ''WesternAnimation/CaptainUnderpantsTheFirstEpicMovie'', released a year later, was budgeted at $37 million and was considered "low budget." This was, unfortunately, the main justification (or at least explanation, from co-director Greg Tiernan's perspective) why so many of the artists were not compensated for their overtime: the budget had already gone to everything else and, as far as he was concerned, there was no way to get more money, so the only solution was force the artists to give him free labor, and it got so bad that it seeped into the studio's work on ''WesternAnimation/ThomasAndFriends''.
* NoDubForYou: Even though it's commonplace for animated films to be dubbed for international markets, the movie will only have a subtitled release in certain areas, for [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids reasons that should be]] [[BlackComedy self-explanatory by now]]. One exception is the version for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH1gUabvxZA Spaniard audiences]], where it's mandatory for movies to be dubbed there, regardless of content and whether it's live-action or animated.
** Subverted in Latin America. The movie did receive a Mexico-produced dub there, though it had a ''very'' limited run in theaters. The same goes with Japan, albeit it went to DVD and BD exclusively.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Music/AlanMenken, best known for his musical work in Creator/{{Disney}} films, composes the score for this movie.
** This is also Creator/ConradVernon's first animated film oriented for adults, after doing work in Creator/DreamWorksAnimation films.
** Co-director Greg Tiernan previously directed ''WesternAnimation/ThomasAndFriends'' from 2009 to 2012.
** In terms of actors, Creator/EdwardNorton, who's usually known for his dramatic roles in films like ''Film/AmericanHistoryX'', is the voice of the Creator/WoodyAllen {{Expy}} Sammy Bagel, Jr.
* ProductionPosse
** The AllStarCast consists of exactly who you'd expect in a film by the creators of ''Film/{{Superbad}}'', ''Film/PineappleExpress'', ''Film/ThisIsTheEnd'', and ''{{Film/Neighbors|2014}}''. Due to the prevalence of the CelebrityVoiceActor trope, most of the cast are, ironically, veterans of exactly the sort of family-friendly fare that the film lampoons.
** Alan Menken's team from ''Series/{{Galavant}}'' (composter Christopher Lennertz and lyricist Glenn Slater) followed him over to this project to co-write the score and song, respectively.
* ReleaseDateChange: Sony first slated the film's release for June 3, 2016, where it would have competed against ''Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtlesOutOfTheShadows'' in the early stages of what became the 2016 Summer Bomb Buster. They later dumped it to August 12, where it competed against the ''Film/{{Petes Dragon|2016}}'' remake, ''Film/FlorenceFosterJenkins'' and the ''{{Film/Ben Hur|2016}}'' remake, the latter or which was the biggest dud of the summer.
* ShrugOfGod: Rogen stated in [[https://youtu.be/oezSI76hptg this interview]] that he doesn't know how the rules of the food coming to life work and just states that it probably happens the moment they get put on store shelves.
* SleeperHit: Became this after surprisingly good critical and word-of-mouth reviews came in, and has surpassed ''WesternAnimation/SouthParkBiggerLongerAndUncut'' as the highest-grossing adult animated movie ever.
* TroubledProduction: You can't make a movie like this without breaking a few eggs.
** Creator/SethRogen spent ''eight years'' finding a studio interested in the project. Those that were sent the script rejected it due to the religious subject matter and obscene content. Even Sony, the eventual distributor of the film, rejected it at first sight until Rogen did several more rewrites (mind you, Seth had no problem getting the green light from Sony to make ''Film/TheInterview'', a live-action movie about ''assassinating a real, very-much alive at the time dictator'', which should [[AnimationAgeGhetto tell you everything you need to know]]). And even ''after'' it was approved, the script was leaked during the 2014 Sony hack, forcing Rogen to rewrite it yet again.
** Things only got worse when physical production began. In order to get quality animation on the film's modest budget, co-director Greg Tiernan used what could only be called scare tactics by threatening the artists at Nitrogen Studios with either termination or blacklisting if they refused to work 7-day weeks with no overtime. Because the studio is based out of Vancouver, which has no animation union, there were also no higher authorities who could do anything about this even if they knew about it, and Tiernan made good on this threat many times during production, resulting in only ''half'' of the artists who worked on the film receiving credit (they would successfully sue the studio for overtime pay three years later, however).
** There were several changes made to the script during production at short notice and with little communication to the folks at Nitrogen, many staff members were often stuck just waiting indefinitely to find out what to do next.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/SausageParty Has its own page]].
* WordOfGod: Writer/co-producer Evan Goldberg and executive producer James Weaver [[http://collider.com/sausage-party-story-details-evan-goldberg/ state]] that the movie deliberately tears apart Creator/{{Pixar}} movies, in large part because nobody else dares to do so. Although it is also believed that the film makes fun of every successful animated film in the past 20 years of when the film came out.
