* CaliforniaDoubling: The show is so obviously filmed in LA it borders on embarrassing. [[MisplacedVegetation Frequent shots of palm trees, which are literally unable to survive in Boston's climate]], buildings almost all being built in an architectural style that was developed decades after most of the city was built, streets in an orderly layout that simply does not exist in a city that pre-dates urban planning, and the near complete absence of Boston accents in the cast make for a setting that amounts to an InformedLocation. By the same token, this gets averted in "Fake It Till You Make" which has Jane and Maura traveling to L.A. to solve a case.
* TheCastShowoff:
** One episode sees Maura demonstrating fluency in Serbian. Sasha Alexander has a Serbian mother.
** At the end of "Knockout", Creator/BruceMcGill gets to show off his skill as a singer and guitarist. A few episodes also allow him to show off his fluency in Spanish.
* TheCharacterDiedWithHim: [[spoiler: Detective Barry Frost]]. He [[TearJerker died in a]] [[LifeWillKillYou car accident]] after [[spoiler: actor Lee Thompson Young committed suicide]].
* FilmingLocationCameo: The season 6 episode "Fake It 'Til You Make It", where Rizzoli and Isles fly off to L.A. after discovering that an earlier killing there might be linked to their current case. They did at least one scene at the beach.
* HideYourPregnancy: Sasha Alexander was pregnant with her second child during Season One. Sometimes it's well hidden and sometimes not as much. In "I Kissed A Girl", Maura was in baggy shirts or scrubs for half the episode and skintight outfits for the other half.
* MissingEpisode: Apparently there are two, according to Website/{{Twitter}}.
* OnSetInjury: Creator/AngieHarmon sprained her ankle badly while filming an episode, and the injury (and her character wearing a medical boot) had to be incorporated into a few Season 4 episodes.
* {{Typecasting}}: Two series in a row may not be enough, but Creator/AngieHarmon's last show had her as a tomboyish cop who is married to the job (the difference between ''Women's Murder Club'' and ''Rizzoli & Isles'' is that her character was divorced in ''WMC'' and single by choice on this show). This is also her third law show, but on ''Series/LawAndOrder'', she was an A.D.A. who fought her battles in the courtroom, not a cop who chased down suspects. Averted for Sasha Alexander, who was on a law show the last time she was on TV, but she goes from a federal agent who can hang with her male counterparts on ''Series/{{NCIS}}'' (a Rizzoli specialty) to a more feminine ME with an advanced degree here. Donnie Wahlberg, on the other hand, seems to be type-cast into the cop role. Harmon played a tomboyish detective on ''Baywatch Nights''.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/JenniferBeals was considered for Hope Martin.
** Creator/ElizabethBerkley and Creator/RoseMcGowan were considered for Dr. Maura Isles.
