* ActorAllusion: Creator/ElijahWood portrays the young, inexperienced but kind hearted (and diminutive!) protagonist of a story with a strong anti-war message. He is part of a group of nine companions: an ever-helpful TeamMom who has to learn to find his courage, a curious young duo who are rarely ever seen apart, a formidable rogue fighter, a mystical character with a penchant for odd declarations, a hard headed warrior with a heavy weapon, a self-important LeaderWannabe who redeems himself before he dies, and a kindly old excentric with a nice hat who is the first of the group to die. The protagonist is also the holder of a strange artifact, the power of which he doesn't fully understand until it gets one of his companions killed. [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings Does any of this sound familiar?]]
* AllStarCast: Surprisingly, for such a low-budget film.
* BeamMeUpScotty: 2 is widely associated with his famous catch phrase "This is smashing!" which was never put in the film, but on a couple of old trailers and an [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-LTkW8MPOk obscure]] BRoll.
* MeaningfulReleaseDate: The movie came out on September 9, 2009 (9/9/09).
* ViralMarketing: Little bit. One of the most interesting ones was a random online-clip that showed Elijah Wood getting his soul sucked out while in the theater.
** The Facebook account "9 Scientist" (still up, surprisingly) is the Scientist's online diary. It tells readers of the man's struggles with creating the B.R.A.I.N device, and of his misgivings with the Chancellor. Not ''necessary'' to enjoy the movie, but it furthers your appreciation and understanding.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: At some point during the preproduction, they had an adaptation where 9's soul actually gets sucked into the Fabrication Machine, and meets its soul to discover that [[http://www.patrickawa.net/2009/09/design-for-9still-contd.html the Machine was really "0".]]
** Looking at the deleted scenes, the key around 6's neck would have been more important to the plot, with 8 playing keep away with it, and the survivors using it at the end to open a box the scientist was holding. Inside is a mirror, and a note labelled "hope" as the survivors look at their reflections. That box was instead used to be the final message from the Scientist to 9.
** Another deleted scene would have had dealt with 1 and him apologizing to 9 after he [[JerkassRealization realizes the error of his ways]], then seeing the damage that he had caused as a result of him losing sight of everything.
