!!Other examples:
* AwesomeDearBoy: Quite a number of actors, directors, and writers joined the MCU or have expressed interest in doing so primarily because of its consistency in making {{Star Making Role}}s, as well as just being so damn fun to be part of. It helps that they're all given quite a bit of creative freedom to experiment with characters and ideas post-Creative Committee dissolution.
* ApprovalOfGod:
** Creator/StanLee loved what this movie universe did with his creations or those he helped shaping up, and he gladly kept doing cameos until his last days.
** Creator/KevinBacon loved the ''Film/{{Footloose}}'' reference in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014''. He was more than willing to appear AsHimself in ''Film/TheGuardiansOfTheGalaxyHolidaySpecial'' both to [[AdamWesting poke fun of himself]] and act in the franchise.
** Both Creator/TobeyMaguire and Creator/AndrewGarfield loved Creator/TomHolland's Spider-Man. [[spoiler:They were more than happy to [[Film/SpiderManNoWayHome appear alongside him]].]]
** Creator/WesleySnipes has expressed his support for Creator/MahershalaAli in taking on the role of ComicBook/{{Blade}}.
* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** During the Infinity Saga, many fans of Marvel Television were very disappointed that the Defenders and their individual shows were constantly ignored by the movies, both during their runtime and after they were cancelled, despite their critical acclaim. Once Disney+ was launched, not only did Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk make unexpected appearances throughout Phase 4 with their respective actors reprising their roles, but Creator/KevinFeige further confirmed that Daredevil would be further expanded upon within the greater MCU in the form of a soft reboot series called ''Born Again''. Furthermore, [[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/daredevil-born-again-casts-jon-bernthal-punisher-1235342229/ it would further be confirmed]] that the Punisher would appear in the show with Creator/JonBernthal returning to the role, alleviating fears that Marvel Studios would only be bringing back ''Daredevil'' characters into the wider MCU.
** One of the big criticisms regarding Phase 4 is how Marvel was churning out so many movies and TV shows that it was next to impossible to keep up with all of them, especially with how little waiting time there was between projects. This led to many fans lamenting that the franchise was prioritizing quantity over quality, especially as many installments got lower ratings than before. Because of this, Creator/KevinFeige indicated [[https://ew.com/movies/kevin-feige-marvel-phase-5-exclusive-interview/ in a 2023 interview]] that Marvel would be pumping the brakes on releasing so many projects at once, as well as leaving more gaps in between releases for Phases 5 and 6. Since then, many previously announced works for Phase 5 have had their release dates heavily delayed or taken down for the time being.
** Regarding the Disney+ projects as a whole, many complaints arose from fans how a majority of them felt less like actual TV shows, and more like six-hour movies cut up into a miniseries format, making it difficult to get invested in them. Marvel Studios would eventually address the issue in 2023, [[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/daredevil-marvel-disney-1235614518/ overhauling their TV division to produce more akin to traditional small screen works]].
* BabyNameTrendStarter: The MCU fueled many parents to [[https://www.google.de/amp/comicbook.com/marvel/amp/2018/05/24/marvel-characters-baby-name-most-popular-2017/ name their children after characters]], among others even names like "Valkyrie", "Quill", "Rocket" and "Hawkeye". Even more so, in 2017, 50 children were given the name "Marvel".
* BannedInChina: During the whole of Phase 4 (except for ''Film/BlackPantherWakandaForever'', which got a late release), mainland China restricted MCU films from being shown in their country, due to their insistence on cracking down on foreign blockbuster releases.
* CaliforniaDoubling:
** On many occasions (such as having Cleveland double for New York City in ''The Avengers'' and Washington, D.C. in ''Captain America: The Winter Soldier'').
** As a television show with a smaller budget, ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'' gets hit with this a lot.
** ''Series/AgentCarter'' naturally uses California back lots for New York in its first season, since filming period pieces in New York is extraordinarily difficult. When the series shifts to Los Angeles for season 2, they were able to do much more location shooting.
** Since ''Film/AntMan1'' 's 2014 production, the majority of the movies have been filmed in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Various urban parts of Atlanta are stood in for NYC while the surronding areas substitute for wherever else they may be. Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta usually stands in for Central Park and Woodruff Park on the campus of Georgia State University stands in for Washington Square park at the beginning of ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar''. The Avengers' headquarters post ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'' is actually a building that's part of Porsche's North America headquarters in the Atlanta area.
* CashCowFranchise:
** Box Office Revenue and merchandise/dvd sales combined, the franchise has made over $35 Billion Dollars.
** Nine of the films have made more than $1 ''billion'' dollars in ticket sales alone. Most franchises are lucky to get ''one'' movie that makes that much. As of ''Avengers: Age of Ultron'', it has taken ''Franchise/HarryPotter'''s spot as the highest grossing film franchise of all time.
** The franchise made '''$4 billion''' in 2018 alone and ''$5 billion'' in 2019 alone, which is more than what almost any other franchise will ever get in their lifetime.
* CastTheRunnerUp:

** Creator/MadsMikkelsen was considered for Malekith in ''Film/ThorTheDarkWorld''. He would later play Kaecilius in ''Film/DoctorStrange2016''. Prior to that, he was considered for Karl Mordo.
** According to the ''Making of the MCU'' book, Creator/BenedictCumberbatch was a frontrunner of Malekith before he was eventually cast as Doctor Strange.
** Creator/ElizabethOlsen was considered for [[ComicBook/Agent13 Sharon Carter]]. She would later be cast as ComicBook/ScarletWitch.
** Creator/MichaelBJordan read for the role of ComicBook/TheFalcon. He would later play Killmonger in ''Film/BlackPanther2018''.
** Creator/PeterDinklage was going to play MODOK when the character appeared in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier''. He would later play Eitri the Dwarf King in ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar''.
** Creator/MichaelRosenbaum auditioned for Peter Jason Quill AKA ComicBook/StarLord. He would later play Martinex in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2''. Creator/LeePace auditioned, but wound up being cast as Ronan the Accuser.
** Creator/AdriannePalicki auditioned for ComicBook/{{Gamora}}. She would later go on to play [[ComicBook/{{Mockingbird}} Bobbi Morse]] on ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD''.
** Creator/RosarioDawson was also considered for Gamora. She would later play Claire Temple in all but one of the Netflix series.
** Creator/DavidTennant was considered to voice ComicBook/RocketRaccoon. He would later join the MCU as Killgrave on ''Series/JessicaJones2015''.
** Before being cast as Yondu Udonta, Creator/MichaelRooker expressed interest in playing Rocket Raccoon and there was a large fan petition trying to make it happen.
** Creator/BrianPatrickWade was considered for Drax. He would later play Carl Creel aka Absorbing Man in ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D''.
** Creator/JakeGyllenhaal was considered for ComicBook/DoctorStrange. He would later play ComicBook/{{Mysterio}} in ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome''.
** Creator/TonyRevolori screen-tested for Peter Parker before being cast as Flash Thompson.
** Creator/LupitaNyongo auditioned for Nebula and ComicBook/{{Valkyrie|MarvelComics}}. She would eventually go on to portray Nakia in ''Black Panther''.
** Over the years ''Film/BlackPanther2018'' was in DevelopmentHell, Creator/AdewaleAkinnuoyeAgbaje, Creator/ChiwetelEjiofor, Creator/DjimonHounsou and Creator/AnthonyMackie were considered for the lead role. Agbaje was Algrim/Kurse in ''Film/ThorTheDarkWorld'', Hounsou was Korath in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014'' and ''Captain Marvel'', Ejiofor was Baron Mordo in ''Doctor Strange'' and Mackie was Sam Wilson/Falcon.
*** Hounsou was also considered for ComicBook/DraxTheDestroyer.
*** Mackie auditioned to replace Creator/TerrenceHoward as Rhodey in ''Iron Man 2'' and for Eric Savin in ''Iron Man 3''.
** Creator/SterlingKBrown auditioned for M'Baku in ''Black Panther'' before being cast as N'Jobu. Mustafa Shakir also auditioned. He would later play Bushmaster in the second season of ''Series/LukeCage2016''.

** Creator/EmiliaClarke was considered for Sharon Carter. She would later join the cast of ''Secret Invasion''.
** Creator/TatianaMaslany was considered for Sersi in ''Eternals''. She would later be cast as ComicBook/SheHulk.

** Creator/OscarIsaac and Creator/EthanHawke were both candidates for Doctor Strange. They were both cast on ''Series/MoonKnight2022''.
** Creator/JohnKrasinski was the first choice for Captain America before Creator/ChrisEvans was cast. However, despite him screen-testing in the actual suit, Krasinski immediately declared "I am '''NOT''' Captain America" after seeing Creator/ChrisHemsworth [[DistractedByTheSexy walk by in his muscular Thor body.]] He was also considered for Star-Lord. He would eventually go on to play [[spoiler:a variant of [[ComicBook/MrFantastic Reed Richards]] in ''Film/DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness]]''.
** Creator/CharlizeTheron was considered for Hela in ''Thor Ragnarok'' and was a popular candidate for Carol Danvers. She was later cast as Doctor Clea Strange.
** [[Creator/MatthewLintz Matt Lintz]] auditioned for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He would go on to portray Bruno Carrelli in ''[[Series/MsMarvel2022 Ms. Marvel]]''.
** Creator/LewisTan screen-tested for Danny Rand on ''Series/IronFist2017''. He would eventually go on to portray Zhou Cheng in "The Blessing of Many Fractures".
** In one interview, Michael Nathanson revealed that [[https://mcuexchange.com/exclusive-interview-michael-nathanson-punisher/ he originally auditioned to play David Lieberman]] on ''Series/ThePunisher2017'', which makes one speculate who would've played Sam Stein if that had happened.
** Creator/DominiqueThorne had auditioned for Shuri. She would eventually get cast as Riri Williams/Ironheart, who debuted in Black Panther's sequel ''Film/BlackPantherWakandaForever''.
* ChannelHop: The MCU began with Creator/{{Paramount}} as their distributor (with the special exception of ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}'', which for film rights reasons was a Creator/UniversalStudios production). When Creator/{{Disney}} bought Marvel, distribution has remained with them ever since (including the Paramount films, which they acquired in 2013), with the exception of the Spider-Man movies, which were distributed by Creator/ColumbiaPictures. There was notably a short transitional period with ''Film/TheAvengers2012'' and ''Film/IronMan3''; since Paramount was originally due to distribute them before the acquisition, as part of the deal they are still credited as such even though the actual distribution job was Disney's work.
* ColbertBump: One of the benefits of not having Spider-Man and the X-Men available to use is that Marvel put their B- and C-list heroes in the spotlight instead, causing the likes of the Hulk and Captain America to regain the mainstream notoriety they once had, saving Iron Man from slipping into C-List obscurity, and giving the Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther the mainstream appeal they had never had before. The Guardians in particular went from struggling to keep a single comic on the shelves to having six solo or team books by the following year, their own cartoon, and more merchandise sales than they'd ever seen before. This more or less came full circle when Spider-Man joined the MCU with ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar''.
* CreativeDifferences:
** ''Film/TheAvengers2012'': Creator/EdwardNorton was let go early on from playing Bruce Banner despite having played him in [[Film/TheIncredibleHulk2008 the 2008 film]]. When asked why Marvel stated that "[[http://www.avclub.com/article/marvel-kicks-edward-norton-out-of-emthe-avengersem-42993 Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members]]", which implied Norton was fired for not getting along with the other actors and crew, as well as butting heads with brass over the screenplay (an issue that was prominent when Norton did ''Film/AmericanHistoryX''). Norton's agent disputed this claim, as did Norton (who said he enjoyed the experience but didn't want to lock in the role long-term) but regardless the part was recast with Creator/MarkRuffalo, who acted in the role to widespread acclaim.
** Creator/PattyJenkins left the director chair of ''Film/ThorTheDarkWorld'' because of disagreements over the film's tone and genre. She would have the last laugh when she joined the rival Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse and directed ''Film/WonderWoman2017'', which handily surpassed ''The Dark World'' both critically and commercially.
** This along with constant ExecutiveMeddling is what led to Creator/EdgarWright to leave ''Film/AntMan1'' just a few months before filming was set to begin. Wright said in a [[https://www.bleedingcool.com/2017/06/22/edgar-wright-leaving-ant-man-lead-baby-driver/ 2017 interview]] promoting ''Film/BabyDriver'' that he left due to being uncomfortable on directing a film with a screenplay that he didn't write (though elements of his screenplay would be incorporated into the final script) and busy commitments on three films during the film's [[TroubledProduction eight-year preproduction]] prevented him from doing more rewrites (despite contrary belief that he was enforced to rewrite the film into the MCU). He has [[https://www.newsarama.com/35100-edgar-wright-has-never-seen-ant-man-uses-interesting-analogy.html admitted]] that he hasn't seen the film and stated he will probably not see it ever, feeling that it would be like him seeing his ex-girlfriend having sex, as in it would bring back bad memories of his experience of working on the film. Wright later reconciled with Kevin Feige in 2021 and is open to working with him again.
** Disagreements between Creator/MarvelStudios and Creator/ScottDerrickson caused Derrickson to quit as director for ''Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'', though he remained involved as an executive producer.
* CreatorBacklash: Making a cinematic shared universe is not easy, and a ''lot'' of creators and actors have gone through quite a bit of grief to pull it off, and expressed their discontent. For some specific examples:
** Creator/JossWhedon has expressed some regret that Marvel's insistence that he helm ''Age of Ultron'' prevented him from working on ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.''
** Creator/TerrenceHoward was ''not'' happy at how he was dropped from the franchise. He claims that his contract stated he would be paid $8 million for ''Iron Man 2'', but the studio told him they would only pay him a fraction of that, and he could either take it or leave. He left, and James Rhodes has been played by Creator/DonCheadle ever since. He also claims that most of the money in his contract went to Robert Downey Jr.'s salary.
** Creator/EdwardNorton isn't exactly fond of his experience with ''Film/TheIncredibleHulk2008'', having once said "I thought we should try to make one Marvel movie that was as good as the worst Chris Nolan movie, but what the hell was I thinking!". That said, [[ApprovalOfGod he expressed approval]] of Creator/MarkRuffalo [[TheOtherDarrin succeeding him as the character]], and in recent years, has expressed interest in re-joining the MCU as a different character.
** Creator/JeremyRenner wasn't happy with his BrainwashedAndCrazy ''Avengers'' role that kept him out of the team dynamic for most of the first film, saying it "wasn't what I signed on for"; Whedon placated him with a much beefed up central role in ''Age of Ultron'', which satisfied him and made him much more enthusiastic about playing Hawkeye. He also has a very team-based role in ''Civil War''.
** Creator/ChloeBennet has become very fed up with how little contact ''Agents of SHIELD'' and the other Marvel Television shows have with the movies. It's been implied that this is also the case with quite a few other people involved with the shows, though she's so far the only one who's dared to say so in public.
** After being dropped from the project due to ExecutiveMeddling, Creator/EdgarWright has refused to watch anything related to ''Film/AntMan1'' or its sequels, alikening the idea of doing so to watching an ex-girlfriend have sex with somebody else.
** Creator/PeytonReed was [[https://www.moviefone.com/2016/11/01/peyton-reed-teases-crazy-stuff-in-ant-man-and-the-wasp/ nonplussed]] about Ant-Man's appearance in ''Civil War'', saying the character only really works in his own special corner of the universe. He was also disappointed that the movie would show him [[spoiler:becoming Giant-Man]], stealing what he'd hoped to make a big moment in ''Ant-Man and the Wasp''; he did however get over the latter, saying there was still plenty of material left for him to mine.
** Creator/NataliePortman did not particularly enjoy working on ''Film/ThorTheDarkWorld'' and tried dropping out after her preferred director left the project and said negative things about her Marvel experience to the press. Since then, the Earth-based characters were completely dropped for ''Film/ThorRagnarok''. However, Portman has said that she didn't exactly ''hate'' being in the ''Thor'' movies or the MCU in general (she was actually quite disappointed when her pregnancy prevented her from appearing in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'') and that she might consider making a return to the MCU. Since then she has dubbed over some archive footage of herself in ''Film/AvengersEndgame'', and is ended up appearing in ''Film/ThorLoveAndThunder'' and ''What If...?'', having a much more positive experience with both projects.
** Creator/MickeyRourke was not happy with ''Film/IronMan2'''s final result, since his most of his character's scenes were cut by the then-active Marvel Creative Committee to make him less sympathetic. Even with the restructuring of Marvel Studios, a few years later, Rourke indicated that he won't be coming back to the MCU again.
** Creator/HugoWeaving wasn't outright ''negative'' about his role as Red Skull, but nonetheless admitted that he had grown tired of blockbuster roles in general and cited Red Skull as an example. By 2016, however, he has grown to look back on it more fondly. [[spoiler:However, when he was offered to reprise the role in ''Infinity War'', Weaving decided to decline, finding the make-up required to portray the character too tiresome a experience to go through again, leading to Ross Marquand taking his place.]]
** Creator/ChristopherEccleston wasn't fond of his role as Malekith in ''Film/ThorTheDarkWorld''. This was because his character's backstory and motives were cut from the film to focus more on [[BreakoutVillain Loki]], and he had to [[DyeingForYourArt spend six hours in the makeup chair every day]]. That being said, he's open to returning as Malekith, on the condition that he works with Creator/TaikaWaititi and the people who made ''Film/ThorRagnarok''.
** Creator/RosarioDawson was very enthusiastic for several years about her cross-series role of Claire Temple, but in 2018 stated that she'd lost a lot of her love of the role, and thinks the only thing that could really get her excited about it again would be getting to appear on ''Series/ThePunisher2017'' and officially be in ''every'' MCU Netflix show.
** Creator/DaveBautista has expressed disappointment about the writing of Drax the Destroyer, which has made the character a ButtMonkey and PluckyComicRelief and not much else. He also was unhappy that Drax's feud with Thanos was quietly dropped after the first ''Guardians'' film (aside from a brief mention in ''Infinity War'').
** Both Creator/KevinFeige and Creator/ScarlettJohansson were unhappy with Disney's decision to release ''Film/{{Black Widow|2021}}'' simultaneously in theaters and on Creator/DisneyPlus (although Disney had [[UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic reasonable grounds in doing so]]). It got to the point where Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney for breach of contract, and Feige released a statement supporting her, saying he understood where she came from.
** Creator/FrankGrillo has had mixed feelings about his portrayal of Brock Rumlow. On the one hand, he was incredibly disappointed that his character was killed off rather quickly with little development in the first act of ''Civil War'', to the point where he only signed on for ''Film/AvengersEndgame'' and ''[[WesternAnimation/WhatIf2021 What If...?]]'' after being pressured to do so by his son. On the other hand [[https://www.forbes.com/sites/simonthompson/2020/06/20/frank-grillo-on-the-marvel-of-billions-and-becoming-an-action-movie-mogul/?sh=22404216db0c Grillo was genuinely shocked at]] [[EnsembleDarkhorse how much of the fanbase loves Rumlow in spite of his small role]], and so has stated that he's still open to reprise the role whenever available.
** According to the biographical book ''MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios'', Creator/BrieLarson became increasingly disillusioned with her work at Marvel, primarily due to the harassment she received online for playing Carol Danvers that targeted ''Film/CaptainMarvel2019'' and subsequent appearances of the character. That said, she's still active in the franchise, indicating she still has some love for her role, though the book's claims appear to be corroborated by an interview in which, when asked how long would she be in the role, Larson replied, seemingly wryly, "I don't know. Does anyone want me to do it again?"
** Of all the non-Disney+ TV shows that were produced by Marvel Entertainment, ''Series/{{Inhumans}}'' is Marvel's biggest regret by far. Due to Ike Perlmutter's efforts to get an adaptation of ''Inhumans'' made as quick as possible in spite of Creator/KevinFeige's disinterest, on top of the show receiving a large amount of backlash from both critics and audiences alike once it actually came out, Marvel Studios did everything in their power to distance themselves from it for quite awhile. ''Inhumans'' was apparently so awful that Marvel no longer sets any of their shows/movies in Hawaii because of lingering tension. With that said, there seems to be some leniency towards ''Inhumans'', as the show is currently listed under the Disney+ catalog and out of left field [[spoiler:in ''Film/DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness'', Creator/AnsonMount [[RoleReprise returns]] as [[UnexpectedCharacter Black Bolt]], albeit an alternate variant of said character]].
** In recent years, Creator/KevinFeige and some other higher-ups at Marvel Studios seem to regret forcing their actors to sign multi-film contracts during Phases 1-3, as a former lawyer for the company noted that said contracts made it emotionally draining for people to commit multiple years of their life to the franchise without knowing what was going to happen. As such, Phase 4 marked the end of this business strategy, allowing actors for more flexibility on which projects they wish to be part of, and to drum up more interest on returning to a role they've played.
* CreatorChosenCasting:
** Creator/RobertDowneyJr was director Creator/JonFavreau's first choice for the role of Tony Stark, having been impressed with the actor's performance in ''Film/KissKissBangBang''. He also believed that the actor's past and acting ability could make Tony Stark into this likable jerk who was on an authentic emotional journey.
** Creator/KennethBranagh wanted Creator/TomHiddleston for the role of Loki, having previously worked alongside the actor in Ivanov and ''Series/{{Wallander}}''.
** Creator/TheRussoBrothers specifically wanted Creator/RobertRedford for the role of Alexander Pierce, as it would not only pay homage to the actor's roles in 1970s thriller films like ''Film/ThreeDaysOfTheCondor'', but because they wanted an acting legend to play a villainous, not unlike Creator/HenryFonda's role in ''Film/OnceUponATimeInTheWest''.
** Creator/JamesSpader was Creator/JossWhedon's first and only choice for Ultron. He felt the actor had this fascinating voice that could be eerily and compelling, while also somewhat human and humorous.
** Creator/KrystenRitter was showrunner Melissa Rosenberg's first choice for the role of Jessica Jones, noting the actress has experience playing characters with a sarcastic bite like Jessica.
** According to Creator/KevinFeige, Creator/HaileeSteinfeld was the first and ideal actress considered for the role of Kate Bishop during the early development stages of ''Series/{{Hawkeye|2021}}''.
* CreatorsOddball:
** Marvel Studios has gone out of its way to hire unexpected directors because of their previous work, like Creator/KennethBranagh for ''{{Film/Thor}}'', Creator/JossWhedon for ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' or Creator/TheRussoBrothers for ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier''.
** Marvel Studios has also become known for adapting properties that previously weren't very famous, like ComicBook/IronMan or the ComicBook/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy. While in the former's case they were more or less forced into this, following Marvel Comics selling the film rights to more well-known characters, examples like the latter took place after the MCU proved itself to be lucrative following the success of ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}''.
* CrossRegionalVoiceActing: Since 2012, the Canadian French dubs have used Canadian French actors from Montreal and European French actors from Paris.
* DarkhorseCasting:
** To an extent. For the most part Marvel Studios prefers to cast more obscure actors or have them PlayingAgainstType as the film leads, while relegating more famous actors to side characters. As a result the films tend to be a StarMakingRole for them.
** They're also developing this with [[CreatorsOddball the directors they hire in recent years]], bringing in indie directors and/or people who've only directed smaller films that wouldn't suggest they'd ever direct action heavy superhero movies. Like the actors above, this tends to get them some more attention. Even before, they tended to bring in directors who may not have been expected even when the franchise was still establishing itself, due to working in other genres or working more in television.
* DawsonCasting:
** Creator/RobertDowneyJr (b. 1965) plays Tony Stark (b. 1970). [[spoiler:The five-year TimeSkip in ''Film/AvengersEndgame'' allows him the character to match the actors age, though.]]
** In a weird way. The new actor for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is 19 year old Creator/TomHolland, who people claim "looks too young" to play ''15-year old'' Peter Parker. Given that Creator/TobeyMaguire and Creator/AndrewGarfield were both in their late 20s when they first started their own movie franchises - a Peter who was a ''late teen'', at best - this is particularly absurd logic.
** While not an extreme case, Creator/HayleyAtwell is older than Peggy Carter in the 40s-based scenes - she was 28 when filming a Peggy who aged from her early-to-mid 20s, and plays a late-20s version when Atwell herself is in her early-30s. In the same context, Creator/DominicCooper plays Howard Stark aged in his mid-to-late 20s when Cooper himself was in his early-to-mid 30s age range. Of course, Atwell also plays Peggy at much older than her real age in ''Winter Soldier'' and ''Ant-Man'', while the older Howard is played by Creator/JohnSlattery. (Slattery is supposed to be Cooper after decades - the scenes with Howard in ''Iron Man 2'' and ''Avengers: Endgame'' are set in the 70s - yet the actor is only 12 years older.)
* DescendedCreator: Several of the directors play characters within the universe. Jon Favreau plays Happy Hogan, Tony Stark's head of security and thus gets to appear in the movies several times. Likewise, Taika Waititi, the director of ''Thor: Ragnarok'', plays the rock alien Korg and appears in several films. Finally Joe Russo sometimes appears as a nameless character in the movies he and Anthony Russo direct.
* DiagnosisOfGod: Creator/JossWhedon stated in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyXwrtm3q3o&t=60s the commentary track]] for ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' that he views [[Characters/MCUTonyStark Tony Stark/Iron Man]] as having Asperger's.
* DiedDuringProduction:
** With Creator/StanLee's passing on November 12th, 2018, the long-standing tradition of Lee's {{Creator Cameo}}s has come to an end, as the remaining pre-filmed footage made for his cameos became used up after ''Film/AvengersEndgame'' (barring any CGI recreations of Lee's likeness).
** Creator/ChadwickBoseman passed away from cancer in August 2020, leaving the fate of the ComicBook/BlackPanther character in the MCU uncertain. A sequel to ''Black Panther'' was released in 2022, but it was announced that Boseman’s role would not be recast, and the sequel would instead focus on his supporting cast and delve more into the world of Wakanda.
*** The production of ''Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'' was also affected by the death of actress Dorothy Steel (who had portrayed the Merchant Tribe Elder). Prior to her death, Steel was flown home during production, so she could be back with her family.
* DuelingWorks: Marvel Studios competed with two different companies that had the film rights for Marvel movies: Creator/{{Sony}} (''Spider-Man'') and Creator/TwentiethCenturyFox (''X-Men'' and ''Fantastic Four''). After the MCU really took off, Marvel proved itself to be more profitable.
** First, Sony dropped out of the Marvel race after the underperformance of 2014's ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan2'' and came up with a plan B, where they more or less made the MCU work for it[[note]]the Sony-MCU deal means that Sony makes profits on all MCU Spidey films, while Marvel has creative control over the direction, can freely tie the movies into the larger universe, and can use Spider-Man and related characters/concepts in SharedUniverse movies all while maintaining full profits[[/note]] while making successful spinoffs of their own so as to not be dependent entirely on the MCU. The strategy worked with the runaway successes of ''Film/Venom2018'' and ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse''. Sony intended to keep Spider-Man himself in the MCU but the nature of the deal with Disney-Marvel (by which the parent company get 5% of the shares of solo film grosses while keeping more money in the team-up appearances) got upset when Disney asked to renegotiate to 50-50 (later 70-30) while Sony wanted to keep the original deal and update it. It was reconciled quickly, allowing the deal to continue with at least two more movies.
** Then, after years of financial trouble, Fox would be bought out by Marvel's parent company Disney for a whopping $71.3 billion in 2019, and thus bringing the X-Men and Fantastic Four into their ownership and making the impending reboot inevitable while bringing an end to the long-running ''Film/XMenFilmSeries''.
* DVDCommentary: Almost all of the MCU movies from ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}'' onward each have a director's commentary on their [=DVDs=] and/or Blu-Ray Discs, which sometimes also features comments from other crew members and/or an actor.
* ExecutiveMeddling:
** In ''Film/IronMan2'', studio execs clashed with Terrence Howard's agents, leading to him [[TheOtherDarrin being replaced]] by Creator/DonCheadle. They also re-cut BigBad Ivan Vanko/Whiplash's scenes to make him less sympathetic. And they insisted on adding story elements that would help set up ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'', which director Creator/JonFavreau thought made for a much less coherent story overall. Favreau was so put off by the studio that he refused to return for ''Film/IronMan3''.[[note]]As director, anyway, Happy Hogan, his character in the first two Iron Man films, still returned for that film and later MCU films with Favreau reprising the role.[[/note]]
** In ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'', Creator/JossWhedon wanted Loki to have a muscular [[TheDragon Dragon]] intimidating enough to go up against the Hulk. Marvel refused, not wanting too many Asgardian or fantasy elements in the movie. Marvel also replaced Creator/EdwardNorton with Creator/MarkRuffalo as the Hulk, although this one worked out as fans liked Ruffalo's portrayal (and Norton was notoriously difficult to work with).
** ''Film/IronMan3'' fell victim to this twice from two different parties:
*** Disney were responsible for the first example (to the plot) - Shane Black originally intended to adapt the Demon in a Bottle comic book storyline[[note]]this storyline dealt with Tony Stark's alcoholism[[/note]], but Disney objected as children would be watching it and Creator/RobertDowneyJr was [[WagTheDirector reluctant to explore alcoholism on screen]] because he felt it could take him back to a mental state he'd worked hard to move beyond. Black complied if only for concluding that Iron Man facing both a villain and alcoholism would lead the two threats to be underdeveloped.
*** Marvel's corporate arm were responsible for the second one - The BigBad was originally female, but they insisted it be the male Alrich Killian, as CEO Ike Perlmutter claimed that toys based on female characters wouldn't sell[[note]]Ironically, not a single toy of Killian was ever made to promote the film[[/note]]. As a result, the entire script had to be changed, and led to the downsizing of both Ellen Brandt's and Maya Hansen's roles.
** ''Film/ThorTheDarkWorld'' was originally planned to focus more on the Dark Elves, especially Malekith, but those scenes were cut in favor of more of EnsembleDarkhorse Loki. (Fan reaction was mixed.) Director Alan Taylor also [[http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/24/thor-2-credits-scene_n_4159190.html?utm_hp_ref=entertainment publicly complained]] about TheStinger that set up ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014'', feeling that it clashed with what was otherwise a fantasy film; Marvel ''loves'' these stingers and had this one done without Taylor's involvement.
** The original cut for ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' was over three hours long. Naturally, the executives demanded that it be cut down to something more manageable, with priority being given to scenes that [[SequelHook set up things]] for ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'' and ''Film/ThorRagnarok'' rather than what fit the movie's storyline.
** This got ''Film/AntMan1'' stuck briefly in DevelopmentHell. Edgar Wright signed on in 2006 and originally wanted it to be a standalone film, like the first ''Iron Man'' film. Marvel insisted on some sort of tie-in to the rest of the MCU, such as cameos by Howard Stark and Peggy Carter. Wright left the project as a result.
** Ever wonder why ''{{Film/Black Panther|2018}}'' and ''Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}'' were stuck in DevelopmentHell until 2014? Well you can blame Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, a racist and misogynistic PointyHairedBoss who believed, [[IRejectYourReality and could conceivably still believe]], that audiences wouldn't want to watch movies with non-{{White Male Lead}} heroes (a belief that rings rather hollow given the success of ''Film/TheHungerGames'' and ''Film/{{Wonder Woman|2017}}''). According to Bob Iger, Perlmutter was only spurred into allowing ''Black Panther'' to happen after he was effectively ordered to put the movie into production by Iger's hand, and even then would only allow Creator/KevinFeige to make both that film and ''Captain Marvel'' on the condition that Feige would make an ''Inhumans'' movie[[note]]Feige had no interest in adapting the Inhumans in the MCU, but Perlmutter wanted the Inhumans to replace the X-Men in the MCU. However, thanks to Marvel [[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/marvel-shake-up-film-chief-819205 agreeing to take Perlmutter out of the picture]] after Feige convinced them that Perlmutter's meddling was dangerously close to negatively affecting the franchise's quality, that movie never did end up happening, instead being made into a rushed [[Series/{{Inhumans}} TV series]], which ended up being absolutely awful and [[FranchiseKiller may have ended up the death knell for all Marvel TV properties]] besides the well-established and beloved ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD''[[/note]]. This issue, among many other questionable decisions Perlmutter made, led to Disney sacking him as Marvel CCO in October 2019 in favor of Feige. Permlutter remained on as a board member for a few years but was among a large groups of executives who were laid off by Disney in the spring of 2023.
** Much of Marvel Studios' meddling came from a Creative Committee within former parent company Marvel Entertainment as a whole. Meddlers included such notable names as Creator/JoeQuesada, Creator/BrianMichaelBendis, and the aforementioned Perlmutter. Kevin Feige grew increasingly tired of the meddling, and eventually convinced Disney to dissolve the Committee and completely separate Marvel Studios from Marvel Entertainment (making Disney themselves the only meddler).
** Even once the Creative Committee was dissolved, this reared its head again when Disney Studios president Alan Horn went over Creator/KevinFeige's head and fired Creator/JamesGunn from ''Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'' following online trolls uncovering some offensive tweets Gunn posted a decade prior (and which he had previously apologized for). Gunn was eventually rehired after continued requests from Feige, the cast, crew, and fans of the franchise, however in an ironic twist, Gunn was called to say he was back on ''Vol. 3'' the day after he signed on to direct ''Film/TheSuicideSquad'' for the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse, putting ''Vol. 3'' on hiatus until it's completed.
** Netflix pulled the plug on all of their shows due to Disney developing Creator/DisneyPlus, in spite of continued acclaim for content like ''Series/{{Daredevil|2015}}''. The move is heavily speculated to be a byproduct of Disney pulling support for Netflix, meaning that developing new Marvel content would naturally benefit to their new competitor. The various teams working on the Marvel TV shows, and particularly ''Daredevil'', were said to be floored by Netflix's decision, indicating that it was a sudden move and that they fully expected the shows to be renewed (aside from ''Series/{{Jessica Jones|2015}}'', which was meant to end with the third season).
* ExiledFromContinuity: Due to rights issues, anything related to ''[[Film/SpiderManTrilogy Spider]]-[[Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan Man]]'', the ''Film/FantasticFour'', ''ComicBook/SubMariner'', or the ''Film/XMenFilmSeries'' characters could not appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe at the time it was created. However, some characters who are known to these groups such as ComicBook/{{Quicksilver}}, ComicBook/ScarletWitch, the Skrulls, and ComicBook/TheKingpin, were still usable, but they could not mention their connection to those groups. This is no longer the case after Disney bought out 20th Century Fox in 2019[[note]]which included the rights to the ''X-Men'' and ''Fantastic Four'' franchises[[/note]], meaning Marvel can now freely use almost all of their characters without running into rights issues except for Sony's Spider-Man spinoff characters. The official press release states that there are plans to integrate both teams with Marvel's stable of heroes and both will be done with a [[ContinuityReboot fresh take]] completely divorced from the original continuities. Disney CEO Bob Iger has, at the very least, stated he is open to greenlighting more R-rated Marvel-related movies such as ''Film/Deadpool2016''.
** Spider-Man was integrated into the setting in Phase 3 as part of a deal made with Disney and Sony. However, due to legal restrictions from Sony's contract, ''Spider-Man'' characters are severely limited on where they can appear in the MCU, and currently cannot be used in any TV shows[[note]]An exception for this rule exists in animation, but it forbids Creator/TomHolland from voicing him in those situations[[/note]]. In 2019, Marvel and Sony had a brief divorce over the character for financial reasons before both parties re-upped the deal, narrowly avoiding this trope from taking effect once more.
** Joe Quesada clarified that the rights for Namor have returned to Marvel at long last, but did not confirm or deny any actual film. The project may be complicated by the busy timetable of Marvel, with films set up until 2028. And audiences may dismiss a film about another underwater hero as unoriginal (even if Namor, as a comic book character, was created first) after the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse's ''Film/{{Aquaman|2018}}''. Namor would eventually make his MCU debut in ''Film/BlackPantherWakandaForever'', though the stipulations of the character's appearance in the MCU means that while he can appear in ensemble pieces, he cannot headline his own standalone film.
** Per interviews given about ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', the MCU was unable use the word "Mutant" in their films or TV shows before regaining the rights to the X-Men from FOX, so they often used other nomenclature, such as "gifted" or "enhanced", for the mutant-like beings that show up on that show. Whether this is because of some sort of written agreement or just an over-abundance of caution about possible legal issues (as mutants and mutation are actual scientific concepts and are more-or-less generic terms) with FOX is unknown. The Inhumans were briefly used as an attempted replacement of sorts for the mutants, though this fell through after the show did horrendously.
*** Director James Gunn has confirmed that a similar joint rights agreement existed for the Skrulls, who are a general Marvel Universe threat but nonetheless debuted in the Fantastic Four.[[note]]The agreement is that the race can be used, but not certain Skrull characters tied explicitly to the ''Fantastic Four'' or ''Silver Surfer'' properties--namely, Super-Skrull (because he has all of the FF's powers).[[/note]] As mentioned above, this problem no longer exists with Marvel regaining rights to the Fantastic Four in 2019, allowing them to use the Skrulls freely.
** The Hulk is also in a form of exile, as while Marvel has development rights to make movies with the Hulk, Creator/{{Universal}} retains distribution rights to get them into theaters. ''Hulk'' characters can show up in ensemble movies and TV shows no problem, but there's no incentive for Marvel to make a Hulk standalone movie if they have to split the profits with someone else.
** Like Namor, ''Man-Thing'' was once in a similar position, where he was initially owned by Creator/{{Lionsgate}}, but the company wasn't interested in making another solo film with the character unless they could reap a portion of the rewards. This got more complicated when Man-Thing was mentioned in an episode of ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', and given that no statement has been made regarding the character, it's completely ambiguous as to who owns the property. Although, given the lack of any comment from Lionsgate regarding a reboot or a sequel, it can be inferred that the rights quietly reverted to Marvel, which is supported by the character appearing in Marvel's Disney+ Halloween special ''Film/WerewolfByNight2022''.
** [[http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/15/a-spider-manavengers-crossover-almost-happened Sony struck a deal]] to have Oscorp Tower from ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan'' appear in ''The Avengers'', but the special effects crew was too far along to insert the building into the NYC skyline. This ended up serving as a blessing in disguise, given that Marvel would ultimately choose to reboot the character within the MCU instead of canonizing ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries'', which would have created a serious ContinuitySnarl.
** Documents unearthed in the infamous Sony hacking scandal revealed that ComicBook/SpiderWoman is also in an odd legal position. She is technically a DistaffCounterpart of Spider-Man and has a similar name, costume and powers, but in-universe she has very little connection to him, and instead is way more closely associated with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers. Because of this, both Sony and Marvel can use her, but Marvel cannot use the name "Spider-Woman," depict her using "spider-like" abilities, or have her wear her iconic red costume. It is unknown if the above-mentioned deal to include Spider-Man in the MCU has changed anything.
** Although Sony and Marvel reached a deal that gave creative control of Spider-Man to [[Film/SpiderManHomecoming Marvel Studios]], Sony still has sole cinematic control of most other related characters. This resulted in Sony, in the wake of the success of ''[[Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar Civil War]]'', announcing that it was going to try again to start its own Spidey-verse with Creator/TomHardy starring in a solo ''Venom'' film with other character projects also being developed. Complicating matters is that Peter Parker[=/=]Spider-Man can't appear in any of those films without Marvel's permission (which isn't forthcoming). However, Amy Pascal (Sony's ''Spider-Man'' producer) has later stated that she doesn't believe that the franchise a character debuts in should preclude them from appearing elsewhere down the line.
** A self-imposed example can be found in the form of ''Ant-Man''; though Marvel owned the film rights to the character, Creator/EdgarWright didn't want the company to do anything with him until he made a movie starring the character. After the DevelopmentHell passed, the characters in that series are free to show up in the MCU proper.
** An odd example: Although Marvel had a hand in creating ''Series/SpiderManJapan'', ''Series/BattleFeverJ'', ''Series/DenshiSentaiDenziman'', and ''Series/TaiyouSentaiSunVulcan'', meaning that Franchise/SuperSentai (and, thanks to crossovers, Franchise/KamenRider and Series/MetalHeroes) are part of the Marvel multiverse (officially, the Toei Tokuverse is designated as Earth-79203), Toei has expressed no interest in doing any form of crossover[[note]]''SpiderManJapan'' appearing in ''ComicBook/SpiderVerse'' being an exception[[/note]] (and even if they did, Marvel officially considers the Tokuverse "Defunct").
* FlipFlopOfGod:
** Disney originally said they had "no interest" in making R-rated Marvel movies. However, when they acquired Fox, and thus the rights to ComicBook/{{Deadpool}}, they changed their view and said that Deadpool can remain R-rated. Not only that, but they also said they're interested in an "R-rated Marvel brand" to extend outside of Creator/{{Netflix}}.
** Regarding when the ''X-Men'' were coming to the MCU, Creator/KevinFeige heavily indicated that it would be a "very long time" before they joined, with some fans thinking that it would be after 2024, and maybe even a whole a ''decade'' before it happened. Then, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, they announced Phase 4. Though it's true that ''X-Men'' wasn't among the Phase 4 titles, the phase itself only lasts from 2020-2021 and was missing several key properties. At the end, Feige enthusiastically hyped the presence of mutants alongside the ''Fantastic Four'' and established properties like ''Black Panther'', ''Captain Marvel'' and ''Guardians of the Galaxy'', as well as the newly-announced ''Blade''. The overall message heavily indicates that the ''X-Men'' would come far sooner than originally thought, perhaps in the range of 2022, much less 2024 and beyond.
** Following the release of ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'', there has been some conflicting information from Feige, franchise directors and writers, and other parties as to which offscreen characters [[spoiler:were victims of Thanos' Snap and which weren't]]. The Russo Brothers claimed that [[spoiler:Aunt May was one of the survivors of the Snap]], but in ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', [[spoiler:she tells the story of how she was snapped and then returned to find what was her apartment was occupied by another family.]] Additionally, the marketing for ''Film/AvengersEndgame'' indicated [[spoiler:Wong was a survivor]], but the screenplay [[spoiler:lists him as a victim]] and then ''Film/SpiderManNoWayHome'' states that [[spoiler:he was a survivor and because of that, was chosen as Sorcerer Supreme over Dr. Strange]].
* FollowTheLeader: Before 2008 and ''Iron Man'', crossover films were thought to be a novelty, and the idea of a series of separate films with different writers and directors sharing a continuity and ongoing story was seen as impossible. Now, ''everyone'' wants to repeat the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and try to create their own franchise of inter-connected blockbusters:
** Creator/TwentiethCenturyFox wanted to expand their ''[[Film/XMenFilmSeries X-Men]]'' franchise into a shared universe. ''Film/FantasticFour2015'' was scrapped from being part of a multiverse due to the movie's box office and critical failure, and ''Film/{{Deadpool|2016}}'' took its place. Unlike with Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries, the series continued being successful and only ended in 2019 when Disney bought out Fox entirely.
** Creator/ColumbiaPictures was trying the same with ''Spider-Man'' through Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries. Following the underperformance of ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan2'', they struck a deal with Marvel Studios to make Spider-Man join the MCU, and instead are trying to apply the shared-universe treatment to ''Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}}'' (along with a shared universe of Creator/ImageComics characters, though that doesn't seem to be high-priority). Even after the deal between Sony and Marvel over Spider-Man (and ''[=ASM2's=]'' underperformance), Sony is insistent that it will create its own Spidey-verse with the Marvel characters it still controls, announcing that it was going to try again starting with Creator/TomHardy starring in a solo ''Venom'' film with other character projects also being developed. Complicating matters is that Peter Parker[=/=]Spider-Man can't appear in any of those films without Marvel's permission (which isn't forthcoming).
** DC turned ''Film/ManOfSteel'' into the first film in the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse. Their parent company, Creator/WarnerBros, are also working to embrace Creator/{{Disney}}'s franchise-driven business model of creating shared universes by expanding the existing ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' film series with the ''Film/FantasticBeasts'' spinoffs, using ''Film/Godzilla2014'' as a launchpad for several {{Kaiju}} movies, and building upon the success of ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie'' by giving that movie a sequel and two spinoffs. There's even a potential Creator/HannaBarbera-verse starting with ''WesternAnimation/{{SCOOB}}''.
** Creator/{{Universal}} attempted to reboot Franchise/UniversalHorror into a series of action-adventure films, under the umbrella of the ''Film/DarkUniverse''[[note]]sparking a legal battle with Warner Bros[=/=]DC claiming that it infringed on their use of ''Justice League: Dark.''[[/note]]) starting with ''Film/TheMummy2017'' (the 2014 film ''Film/DraculaUntold'' was intended as the starting point, but was later dropped from the canon). While not superheroic in nature, the movies were to treat their major characters as if they were superheroes. Universal even went so far as to have a ''Dark Universe'' title card planned to precede each film...until the epic critical and commercial failure of ''Film/TheMummy2017'' eventually caused them to scrap the SharedUniverse plans in favor of focusing more on the films being director driven standalone movies.
** ''Film/TheConjuring'' seems to be heading this way, as it has a sequel and three spinoffs; ''Annabelle'' (which has a second sequel on the way), ''The Nun'', and an upcoming spinoff about the Crooked Man.
** ''Creator/{{Toho}}'' is also getting in on the shared universe game, with the surprise announcement that the studio has cancelled the previously-announced sequel to ''Film/ShinGodzilla'' in favor of an entire cinematic universe revolving around the studio's library of {{Kaiju}}.
** This phenomenon has also bled over into television, with the likes of the ''Series/ArrowVerse'' following the MCU's example.
** The MCU itself isn't immune to trend chasing. At DC [=FanDome=] in July 2020, Creator/MichaelKeaton was announced to reprise his role of Film/{{Batman|1989}} in the then-upcoming ''Film/{{The Flash|2023}}'' via a [[TheMultiverse multiverse]] crossover. News of characters from the ''Film/SpiderManTrilogy'' and ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries'' showing up in future MCU movies quickly cropped up afterwards during the remainder of 2020... and got fully confirmed with ''Film/SpiderManNoWayHome'', thus beating Warner Bros / the DCEU to the punch despite the latter being announced first.
* GodNeverSaidThat:
** While doing press for ''Age of Ultron'', director Creator/JossWhedon was asked about Phil Coulson's resurrection on ''Agents of SHIELD''. Whedon explained he thought bringing it up would take away from the emotional impact of Coulson's death, and that Coulson was still dead (to the Avengers). While what he meant was clear from the context, it immediately exploded across the internet, even on semi-respectable pop culture sites, into him declaring ''Agents of SHIELD'' (which he executives produces and his brother and sister-in-law are showrunning) as [[CanonDiscontinuity non-canon]] and a product of corporate infighting and, event more tenuously, that he and Marvel hated the show and wanted to kill it as soon as possible.
** Somewhat related to the above, some took the fact that no TV characters were in ''Infinity War'' (and reportedly none are in its sequel either) as further proof that the movie and TV side have become entirely separate. In reality, it was never said that TV characters would be in IW- it was merely said that it was inevitable that eventually some TV characters would show up in the movies- everyone just assumed they meant ''Infinity War''. Edwin Jarvis (Creator/JamesDArcy) from ''Series/AgentCarter'' did make it to the big screen, in ''Endgame''.
* HostilityOnTheSet: Prior to August 2015, the movies were made under Marvel itself rather than Creator/{{Disney}}'s live-action group. At Marvel, the leadership was made up of CEO Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter and his creative committee (big writers/editors at Marvel). As the years went on, the tension between Perlmutter/Marvel and MCU chief Creator/KevinFeige only continued to grow. Perlmutter overrode many of Feige's creative decisions. Maya Hansen was supposed to be the villain of ''Film/IronMan3'' but Perlmutter changed it because he felt like she wouldn't sell toys. Feige had wanted to make ComicBook/BlackPanther and ComicBook/CarolDanvers movies for quite some time but was shot down under the same toy pretenses. Both movies didn't happen until 2018 and 2019 respectively, a decade into the franchise. Perlmutter is also believed to be the reason Creator/EdgarWright left ''Film/AntMan1'' at the eleventh hour. Wright had been working on the project since before the MCU was formed and wanted to make the movie more standalone whereas the people at Marvel wanted it to be in the formula. Feige is reported to have been on Wright's side and was willing to give him more creative freedom. The tension finally came to a head on the 2015 set of ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'' when the infamously penny pinching [[note]] So much that at the press junket for ''Film/TheAvengers2012'' , reporters who were there all day weren't fed lunch, were given a quota of two bags of chips and a can of soda, and then had to resort to “stealing” food from another movie’s press junket [[/note]] Perlmutter wanted to drop Creator/RobertDowneyJr from the project because of his salary. Feige went to Alan Horn (head of Disney's live-action group) and threatened to quit there and then if they didn't get him out from under Perlmutter. Disney acquiesced, the creative committee was disbanded (Feige got to pick his own team), Marvel Studios was split off from Marvel Entertainment and put under the Disney umbrella, and Horn is now Feige's boss. Perlmutter stepped down as CEO of Marvel Entertainment in 2018 but still remained as chairman of the board until an attempt to get Feige ousted from Marvel Studios in 2023 backfired and got ''him'' canned instead, though now Feige basically has almost full control of Marvel as a whole, which explains a renewed focus on TV shows as part of Phase 4.
* MoneyDearBoy:
** Creator/PaulBettany has stated that he sees his role as JARVIS as simply a source of easy money and has never even seen the ''Iron Man'' films. However, he's been much more invested in his new role as ComicBook/TheVision.
--->'''Bettany''': I used to be in a studio for 45 minutes and do J.A.R.V.I.S. and get a huge bag of cash and go my way like a burglar, and now they want me to work for my money. Which is great and sweaty and hot, which you’ll realize once they unveil everything. It’s really f***ing cool. It’s great to join this train which is on really clear tracks.
** Creator/ClarkGregg says this was initially the case. He took the role of Agent Coulson only as a favour to Jon Favreau, his neighbor at the time. However he ended up enjoying the role more than he expected, leading to Coulson becoming a BreakoutCharacter.
** Despite signing a multi-film contract, Creator/HugoWeaving claims to have little interest in reprising his role as the ComicBook/RedSkull, having grown tired of blockbuster work. However, in 2016, he has stated that he's since grown to enjoy his time as the Red Skull, and expressed an interest in returning. [[spoiler:He ultimately didn't return, but [[TheOtherDarrin his character did.]]]]
* MultipleLanguagesSameVoiceActor: French actress Creator/PomKlementieff (Mantis) also voices her own character in the movies' French dubs.
* ThePeteBest:
** Most fans generally forget (or prefer not to acknowledge) that Creator/EdwardNorton was ever Bruce Banner/Hulk. Technically this also applies to Creator/EricBana, who played him in 2003's ''Film/{{Hulk}}''.
** Though they play the character at different time periods, Creator/DominicCooper is more remembered as Howard Stark than Creator/JohnSlattery. Ironically, Slattery has now physically appeared as Howard Stark in more films than Dominic Cooper (four, to the latter's one), albeit Cooper has more screentime overall than Slattery thanks to having a more central role in the first ''Captain America'', along with his appearances on ''Series/AgentCarter''. In any case, both actors are remembered far more than Gerard Sanders, who very briefly played Howard in the first ''Iron Man'' film.
** Most people tend to acknowledge Creator/DonCheadle as James Rhodes over Creator/TerrenceHoward, for the latter only had one film as the character.
** In the French dub, Creator/AlexandreGillet as Steve Rogers/Captain America, due to having stuck around for long after he replaced Maël Davan-Soulas, who only voiced him in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger'' and ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}''.
** Ditto in the French dub for Creator/ThierryDesroses, the usual dub voice of Creator/SamuelLJackson since ''Film/PulpFiction'', who succeeded Creator/PaulBorne as Nicky Fury (Borne only did ''Film/IronMan1'').
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/MarkRuffalo, RomCom veteran prior to the MCU, as the Hulk.
** Creator/ChrisEvans tended to play [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold jerks with good hearts]] (think [[Film/FantasticFour Johnny Storm]]) before being cast as the [[IdealHero upstanding]] and [[NiceGuy gentlemanly]] Captain America.
** Creator/JamesDArcy usually played slimy villains before the bumbling and pompous Edwin Jarvis on ''Series/AgentCarter''. He was reluctant to take the role for this reason.
** Creator/ChrisPratt, best known as goofball everyman [[Series/ParksAndRecreation Andy Dwyer]] prior to 2014, playing an action-adventure lead, though one with plenty of comedic elements. This eventually became his new type of character for future roles such as ''Film/JurassicWorld'' and ''Film/TheMagnificentSeven2016''.
** Phase 3 has had a few actors famous for playing heroes cast as villains, including [[spoiler:Creator/KurtRussell]], Creator/MichaelKeaton and Creator/MichaelBJordan.
* PlayingWithCharacterType: Creator/JuliaLouisDreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Her performance is quite similar to her work as [[Series/{{Seinfeld}} Elaine Benes]] or [[Series/{{Veep}} Selina Meyer]], but the unusual part comes from how it's put in a more dramatic setting where her actions make her a villain rather than an UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist.
* PosthumousCredit:
** Creator/StanLee passed away before the release of both ''Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}'' and ''Film/AvengersEndgame'', which were the two last MCU films to include cameos by him.
** ''WesternAnimation/WhatIf2021'' was released a year after the passing of Creator/ChadwickBoseman. He voiced several T'Challas (most prominently the one that became Star-Lord) across TheMultiverse in the series.
** French actor Creator/GaspardUlliel died two months prior to the release of ''Series/{{Moon Knight|2022}}'', in which he played Anton Mogart / Midnight Man.
* ProductionPosse:
** Creator/JossWhedon directed ''The Avengers'', which had two of his regulars (Alexis Denisof and Creator/EnverGjokaj) in bit parts, his brother and sister-in-law Jeb Whedon and Maurissa Tanchauroen are the showrunners for ''Agents of SHIELD'', and his former ''Buffy the Vampire Slayer'' writers Drew Goddard, Steven S. [=DeKnight=], and Doug Petrie are writers/producers on ''Daredevil''. 2015 was probably when the MCU hit peak Whedon saturation.
** All films directed and produced by Creator/TheRussoBrothers try to include at least one cast member from their show ''Series/{{Community}}''; Danny Pudi in ''Winter Soldier'', Creator/EnverGjokaj in ''Agent Carter'', Jim Rash and Julianna Guill in ''Civil War'', Creator/BrieLarson, Creator/KenJeong, and Creator/YvetteNicoleBrown in ''Endgame''.
* PromotedFanboy:
** Creator/SamuelLJackson was a big comics fan even before Marvel started using his likeness for Nick Fury. He accepted a landmark nine movie deal in exchange for the retroactive rights, and given how successful they've been, is quite happy how things turned out.
** Creator/AnthonyMackie as ComicBook/TheFalcon. Mackie had always wanted to play either him or Black Panther on film and was actually ''disappointed'' when he found out the filmmakers weren't going to have him wear the character's red spandex costume from the comics.
** After he was officially announced for ''Eternals'', Creator/KumailNanjiani showed two pictures of himself at Comic-Con on Twitter--one in 2012, where he was interviewing the late, great Creator/StanLee, and one in 2019, where he stood as one of the newest additions to the MCU.

His older brother Creator/{{Luke|Hemsworth}} cameos in ''Film/ThorRagnarok'' and ''Film/ThorLoveAndThunder'' as an actor playing Thor, while Music/MileyCyrus, who once was their sister-in-law, voiced Mainframe in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2''. His second cousin Taylor Hemsworth plays one of the girls asking Thor for a selfie in ''Ragnarok''. And finally, his son Tristian plays young Thor in ''Film/ThorLoveAndThunder'', while his daughter India plays Gorr's daughter, Love.
** ''Series/{{Hawkeye|2021}}'': Young Maya shown in the flashbacks is portrayed by Darnell Besaw, Creator/AlaquaCox’s second cousin.
** Quite a few on ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD''.
*** In “S.O.S. Part 2, Creator/ClarkGregg’s younger brother Andrew had an uncredited part in the episode S.O.S. Part, while his daughter Stella portrays the female student who enters Coulson's classroom in "Identity and Change."

* RecastAsARegular:
** Creator/LauraHaddock played a woman asking Steve for an autograph in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger'' before playing Meredith Quill in the ''Guardians of the Galaxy'' films. Creator/JamesGunn joked that the woman was Peter Quill's grandmother.
** Creator/EnverGjokaj played a police officer in ''Film/TheAvengers2012'' before playing Daniel Sousa on ''Series/AgentCarter''. The showrunners of ''Agent Carter'' joked that Sousa is the cop's grandfather.
** Creator/AlfreWoodard played a woman named Miriam Sharpe whose son was an offscreen casualty during the FinalBattle of ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' before playing Mariah Dillard / Black Mariah, the BigBad of ''Series/LukeCage2016''.

* ReferencedBy: In ''WesternAnimation/RonsGoneWrong'', among the many skins a B-Bot can have are Iron Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel.
* ReleaseDateChange:
** The UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic and ensuing closure of movie theatres led to a series of massive adjustments to the Phase 4 release slate. ''Film/{{Black Widow|2021}}'' was originally supposed to begin the phase with a May 2020 release date but was ultimately moved back an entire year to May 2021, and ''Eternals'' was moved to 2021 beforehand, making 2020 the first year since 2009 without a MCU movie release and the first year since 2012 (''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'') to have one single MCU canon installment (''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'' had its finale in 2020 -- ''Series/{{Helstrom}}'' doesn't even have the Marvel logo on advertising). The subsequent movies received changes to their release dates as well. Thus Phase IV didn't even start in the movies but streaming, which as seen below had its own case.
** On the Creator/DisneyPlus series side, the premiere of ''Series/TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier'' was delayed as it still needed shooting for some set pieces, bringing on ''Series/WandaVision'' (which was easier to film) earlier and also delaying ''Series/{{Loki|2021}}'' for a month. And given the delays of ''Black Widow'', a character that was supposed to be introduced in TheStinger to that movie instead [[EarlyBirdCameo showed up first]] in ''The Falcon & The Winter Soldier''.
** In October 2021, Disney announced that all of the 2022 movies would be delayed by several months due to production problems outside of the pandemic including Letitia Wright’s injury on the set of ''Film/BlackPantherWakandaForever'' shutting down production for several months and a second round of reshoots for ''Film/DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness''.
** The release dates for the Phase 5 and 6 line-up had to be changed or delayed due to the [[UsefulNotes/TvStrikes 2023 WGA/SAG-AFTRA Strike ]] forcing the studio to shut down the ongoing productions.
* RoleEndingMisdemeanor:
** Marvel briefly touted Creator/ShiaLaBeouf for an unspecified role in an upcoming film, only to drop him following abuse allegations against him.
** T.I. was dropped from the ''Ant Man'' films after he and his wife Tameka Cottle were accused of sexual assault. WordOfGod is that he wasn't going to be in the third film anyway, but this eliminated any possibility of him coming back.
** According to the novel ''MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios'', Creator/KevinFeige has stipulated that Creator/EdwardNorton and Creator/JossWhedon are not to return to or be involved in any future MCU works. The reason for Norton's exile is due to the CreativeDifferences and attempted ExecutiveMeddling in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'', while Whedon's is likely either due to his involvement on ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD''; a series which Feige was reportedly not particularly happy with, or the abuse allegations Whedon has received from his time working on ''Film/JusticeLeague2017''.
** In 2023, long-time executive Victoria Alonso was fired, the reasons for which are subject of dispute.[[note]]The official reason given is for breach of contract, claiming that Alonso violated a non-compete clause by serving as a producer on the Argentine film ''Film/Argentina1985'' (which was made by Amazon Studios), despite having failed to seek permission to work on the film, and continuing to promote it after being ordered by Disney to cease her involvement with the project; while Alonso herself claims that it was due to her protesting against higher-ups in Disney removing LGBTQ references in ''Film/AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania''. There's even a ''third'' reason given, related to Marvel's VFX department, of which Alonso was president and was notoriously criticized during Phase 4 for its shoddy quality, with insider reports conflicting over whether Alonso was supposedly singularly responsible for cultivating a toxic work environment within the department or she was made the "fall guy" for it.[[/note]] Notably, Kevin Feige didn't intervene in the decision due to him being incensed by Alonso publicly protesting against it, as he maintains a strict policy on not speaking out against the companies they work with.
** Creator/JonathanMajors was dropped as Kang after he was convicted of assault and harassment against his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari in December 2023.
* RoleReprise:
** Creator/LouFerrigno as the voice of the Hulk in ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}'', returning from [[Series/TheIncredibleHulk1977 the 70s TV series]] and [[WesternAnimation/TheIncredibleHulk1996 the 90s cartoon series]]. His voice was mixed with Mark Ruffalo's in ''Film/TheAvengers2012'' to make Hulk's voice, and Ruffalo would do the voice by himself from ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' onwards.
** [[spoiler:Creator/JKSimmons as J. Jonah Jameson]] in ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', reprising his role from [[spoiler:Creator/SamRaimi[='=]s ''Film/SpiderManTrilogy'', ''WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'', and ''WesternAnimation/UltimateSpiderMan2012''.]]

** Creator/RyanReynolds confirmed that he would be reprising his role as Film/{{Deadpool|2016}} in an upcoming MCU project. In September 2022, he officially confirmed that Creator/HughJackman would be joining him as Wolverine in ''Deadpool 3'', later titled ''Film/DeadpoolAndWolverine'' along with a majority of the cast from the first two Deadpool films and some others from the ''Film/XMenFilmSeries''.

* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: Before ever getting its own studio, Marvel had plans to produce films of Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Now, all of these projects finally became reality (although Iron Fist and Luke Cage ended up as television properties).
* ScrewedByTheLawyers:
** When the MCU was first being started, most of the film rights for Marvel properties were under the control of different studios, meaning they couldn't use most of their popular characters at first. The biggest name Marvel had full control over from the start was ComicBook/CaptainAmerica, and even he wasn't anywhere near the popularity of Marvel's [[ComicBook/SpiderMan real]] [[ComicBook/XMen heavy]] [[ComicBook/FantasticFour hitters]]. Over time, the film rights for most characters have gradually returned to Marvel, but there are still some hints at behind-the-scenes legal drama, such as three films being absent from Creator/DisneyPlus (''Film/SpiderManHomecoming'' and ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', distributed by Sony, and ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}'', distributed by Universal).
** Although Spider-Man is a part of the MCU, the business deals made by Sony and Disney over the years have severely limited how the character can be used. As of August 2022, Spider-Man can only independently appear in ensemble films, while his solo movies require at least one previously-established MCU character to appear alongside him per Sony's requests. While he ''can'' appear in animated TV shows, Spidey cannot be voiced by Creator/TomHolland in that medium, and is completely barred from appearing in any live-action shows.
* SequelInAnotherMedium: Up until ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', every main MCU entry was a theatrically released film. Starting in Phase 4 with ''Series/WandaVision'', a lot of main entries are Creator/DisneyPlus streaming series instead, due to Creator/{{Disney}} shifting gears towards a streaming business model. That trend started before the COVID-19 pandemic, but it only intensified due to the pandemic crippling the theatrical business.
* ShipperOnSet: Creator/BrieLarson and Creator/TessaThompson [[https://www.buzzfeed.com/alliehayes/captain-marvel-valkyrie-belong-together have shared fanart on their social media]] depicting their characters Captain Marvel and Valkyrie dating.
* SoMyKidsCanWatch:
** Creator/MarkRuffalo has stated that he accepted the role in Avengers for his kids. Unfortunately, seeing him turn into the Hulk turned out to be too frightening for them to watch.
** Creator/DjimonHounsou said he took the role as Korath the Pursuer in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014'' because his son is a superhero fan, and he wanted to show him black people can be in superhero films too.
** In addition to AwesomeDearBoy, Creator/RobertRedford took the role of Pierce in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'' because his grandkids love the Marvel movies.
** Creator/JamesSpader has stated he took the role of Ultron in ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' because his sons love Marvel movies. There was also an element of AwesomeDearBoy.
** Creator/AnthonyMackie says he wanted to play the Falcon to show the kids in his family (as well as black kids in general) that black people can be superheroes too. In general, he's been very vocal about the need for greater diversity in superhero movies.
** Creator/MichaelDouglas says this was his major motivation for playing Henry Pym in ''Film/AntMan1''. He even took his son to Comic-Con to promote the movie!
* TrollingCreator:
** It's been tradition since the first ''Iron Man'' to have a post-credits scene. Leading up to ''The Avengers'', these scenes foreshadowed events that would be touched on in other films. However, starting with ''The Avengers'', these foreshadowing scenes are often played mid-credits, and audiences who wait to the end of the credits are instead rewarded with a pointless, humorous BrickJoke for their patience; a crowning example is in [[spoiler:''Spider-Man: Homecoming'', which ends with a Captain America PSA extolling the virtues of patience, even if said patience goes completely unrewarded]]. The trolling has become almost poetic in its inconsistency, as inter-spliced with the ShmuckBait stingers are legitimate post-credit scenes like in ''Winter Soldier'' and ''Ant-Man'', not to mention the complete absence of anything at all at the end of ''Age of Ultron''.
** Despite huge demand, Kevin Feige (head of Marvel Studios) repeatedly said that there were no plans for either a Black Panther or Captain Marvel movie... right up until the Phase 3 announcements, where not only were ''both'' movies given release dates, but it was revealed that both had been in the planning stage for a long time and Black Panther had even already been cast and would show up in ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar''.
* TroubledProduction:
** There was a lot of conflict between the film and television studios until Marvel Television got folded in with the larger production. Because they were independent operations, they didn't have to coordinate and they went in different directions. As a result, the early TV shows are of dubious canonicity.
** The merging of Marvel Television with Marvel Studios also caused its own issues. During Phase 4, Marvel Studios would create TV series in a very unconventional way that made production nightmarishly difficult. Namely, individual series would shoot million-dollar budget TV without any sort of preplanning, show bible, or even a pilot episode. Most series didn't even have a proper showrunner, instead trying to use film executives to dictate how things went. Head writers for various series were often let go midway through production to have the directors take control, and several issues were relegated to being fixed in post-production and reshoots, which only served to balloon the budget. Ultimately, the 2023 Writer's Strike resulted in Marvel Studios agreeing to [[https://www.wga.org/uploadedfiles/members/member_info/contract-2023/WGA_proposals.pdf the Writer's Guilds terms]], meaning that future television productions will follow a more traditional way of making series.
** The franchise went through a series of problems, both internal and external, throughout the early 2020s that led to massive restructurings and changes throughout Phase 4 and 5 as noted by [[https://variety.com/2023/film/features/marvel-jonathan-majors-problem-the-marvels-reshoots-kang-1235774940/ this story]] in Variety:
*** The COVID-19 pandemic kept most of Disney’s incredibly lucrative parks closed for an extended period of time. In order to feed the beast, so to speak, Disney ordered more MCU output to keep their stock price afloat and wanted either a movie in theaters or a streaming show out at all times. This massive uptick in content left the executives at the notoriously top down Marvel Studios spread thin and unable to be as active as they once were. The sheer amount of content made everything hard to keep track of both for the staff and the audience.
*** The amount of content and constant reshuffling of dates also weighed on the people, both in house and vendors, who work on the CGI. The Marvel Studios staff was working on ''Film/AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania'' for allegedly up to fourteen hours a day to get it out the door. Although MCU movies are known to come down to the wire, the CGI was notably unfinished in the final product with one executive saying that even their kids were voicing opinions about the shoddy work. The shoddy CGI had been noticeable for quite some time and Disney ended up firing executive Victoria Alonso for it, though the ostensible reason for her firing was because she was producing another movie behind Disney’s back.
*** All of the log jam and constant reworking caused budgets to balloon with diminishing returns both on streaming and at the box office. The long gestating ''Blade'' movie was also a victim of the behind the scenes drama with several directions coming and going but is now allegedly going to cost around $100 million. ''Film/{{The Marvels|2023}}'' also saw its budget balloon because of extensive reshoots to $275 million in raw dollars but adjusted down to $220 million after a tax credit to film in the UK. Director Nia [=DeCosta=] even allegedly handed off the film in post-production to work on her next project. This was after the film had public test screenings (which Marvel does not typically do) where it did not do well. It had the lowest domestic opening in the franchise’s history with $47 million with a $110 worldwide grows (although its marketing was affected by the SAG strike that was resolved the same week as its release) which almost guaranteed it will lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
*** Creator/JonathanMajors’s legal troubles in 2023 further derailed many things within Marvel. In March of that year, Majors was arrested for domestic violence after he allegedly choked his girlfriend. Majors maintained his innocence, but several other women connected to Majors began to cooperate with the NYPD in the investigation. To complicate matters, one of the associated women had been ''employed'' at Marvel and had sought medical attention in London for her injuries while working on ''Quantumania'' with him. Majors was then dropped by his management and PR agencies for other alleged misconduct around this time. In a bad bit of timing, his trial began immediately after Season 2 of ''Series/{{Loki|2021}} '' ended. On December 18, 2023, Majors was ultimately found guilty of reckless assault in the third degree, and he was also convicted on a harassment violation; Marvel Studios officially fired Majors the very same day. Since the initial arrest, Marvel Studios has allegedly tossed around either recasting him as Kang or pivoting to ComicBook/DoctorDoom as the main villain.
*** All of the above reasons caused ''Film/DeadpoolAndWolverine'' to end up the only MCU movie to release in 2024, allowing the studios to breathe a bit. ''Thunderbolts'' and ''Captain America: Brave New World'' ended up pushed to 2025.
* UnderageCasting: Some actors across the franchise portray characters older than they are, notably:
** Creator/JohnSlattery portrays the older Howard Stark from content set in the 70's and after, starting with ''Film/IronMan2''. Slattery was about 47 when he began playing Howard, who was officially 53 when his son Tony was born in 1970.
** Creator/HayleyAtwell portrays Peggy Carter in every time period the character appears starting with the early-40s and ending (so far) with 2014, averting TimeShiftedActor; Peggy is born in 1919, and Atwell herself was in her late-20s when she first assumed the role. See also DawsonCasting above.
* UnisexSeriesGenderedMerchandise: An occasional issue -- although the films are family-orientated, the merchandise often sides itself to young boys. There was a backlash when the toys based on ''The Avengers'' and ''Avengers: Age of Ultron'' were released because there was no action figure for Black Widow. Notably, in the latter film, she rides a motorcycle and uses Captain America's shield in conjunction with it, but all the toys had Cap riding the bike himself. Considering ExecutiveMeddling above, much of the fault of this likely comes from Ike Perlmutter (who is infamously quite sexist and believes female characters don't sell) and his control over Marvel Entertainment, which still handles the merchandise side of things. Thankfully, this has become less of an issue after Perlmutter was sacked from Marvel, with female heroes now getting just as many action figures as the male ones.

* WorkingTitle: Videos and pictures taken behind the scenes tend to reveal some humorous code names during the filming process[[note]]''Iron Man 2'' used Rasputin and Murphy's Law, ''Thor'' used Manhattan, ''The First Avenger'' used Frostbite, ''Avengers'' used Group Hug, ''Iron Man 3'' used Caged Heat, ''The Dark World'' used Thursday Mourning, ''The Winter Soldier'' used Freezer Burn, ''Guardians of the Galaxy'' used Full Tilt, ''Age of Ultron'' used Afterparty, ''Ant-Man'' used Bigfoot, ''Civil War'' used Sputnik, ''Doctor Strange'' used Eye See You, ''Homecoming'' used Summer of George, ''Ragnarok'' used Creature Report, ''Black Panther'' used Motherland, ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'' used Ragtag (season 1), ''Daredevil'' used Bluff (season 1) and Ringside (season 2), ''Jessica Jones'' used Violet, ''Luke Cage'' used Tiara, ''Iron Fist'' used Kick, ''Punisher'' used Crime, and ''Defenders'' used Group Therapy[[/note]].
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Someone in the stunt teams or the writers' room must be a wrestling fan, as there has been a moment across the three parts of the MCU (movie, TV, and Netflix side) where an antagonist has countered a protagonist or supporting character's offense with a powerbomb:
** ''Agents Of SHIELD'': Hyde to Coulson in Season 2 (countering a triangle choke from the ground)
** ''Jessica Jones'': Will Simpson to Trish in Season 1 (the triangle choke from the ground again)
** ''Daredevil'': Jacques to Electra in Season 2 (in a slight twist, it goes from a hurricanrana by backsliding off a plane wing, transitioning into an armbar when he doesn't go down, then to the powerbomb onto the wing)
** ''Civil War'': Bucky to Natasha (a hurricanrana that simply becomes Natasha elbowing Bucky's head when he doesn't get dragged down)
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: During Phase 1 and early Phase 2, there wasn't actually a long-term plan for how the MCU narrative would play out, and it's shown some plans changed over time:
** Many early universe-building {{Easter Egg}}s, like the Infinity Gauntlet in Odin's vault, got adjusted as the long-term plans were established and changed.
** ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}'' teased an Avengers mission to hunt down the Hulk, which became an AbortedArc - "The Consultant" retconned this into a ploy by Tony Stark, after ''Film/IronMan2'' had Black Widow inform Fury that Tony Stark wouldn't be suitable for the Avenger Initiative.
** Creator/JossWhedon admitted in 2017 that despite the mid-credits scene teasing Thanos, he only threw him in because he needed SOMEONE to be above Loki and the Other, and he liked the character; he didn't actually have a good idea on how to adapt the Mad Titan into film, and openly praised the Russo brothers for their different approach to the character (despite it retconning the line about fighting the Avengers would be "to court death" into more of a MythologyGag).
* YouLookFamiliar:
** All the characters played by Creator/StanLee ([[EpilepticTrees assuming they're not the same guy]].)
** Creator/AlfreWoodard plays Miriam Sharpe in ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'' and Mariah Dillard on ''Series/LukeCage2016''. When this was pointed out to her, she admitted that she hadn't known the two works shared the same universe.
** Creator/MartinStarr plays a bit part as a pizza-loving computer geek in ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}'' [[note]]the novelization for that film rather infamously claimed that the geek was Amadeus Cho[[/note]] and teacher Mr. Harrington in ''Film/SpiderManHomecoming''. Kevin Feige has [[https://comicbook.com/marvel/2019/05/16/spider-man-far-from-home-incredible-hulk-mcu-connections-martin-starr-roger-harrington confirmed]] that Harrington and the geek are the same character.
** Creator/EnverGjokaj portrayed a cop in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' and then Daniel Sousa on ''Series/AgentCarter''. [[EpilepticTrees Some cite this]] as a case of IdenticalGrandson (though this was Jossed by Sousa being [[TrickedOutTime pulled out of the past]]).
** Creator/LauraHaddock portrayed Peter Quill's mother in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014'' and ''[[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2 Vol. 2]]'', and an autograph-seeker during the "Star Spangled Man With a Plan" montage in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger''. 383** Creator/GemmaChan, who played supporting antagonist Minn-Erva in ''Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}'', would later end up playing Sersi, one of the lead characters in ''Film/{{Eternals}}''
** Creator/DavidDastmalchian played Kurt in the first two Ant-Man films and Veb in ''Quantumania''. This is a downplayed example since Veb is an entirely CGI character that Dastmalchian voices without Kurt’s Eastern European accent.
** Creator/KatyOBrian played Kimball on ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'' and Jentorra in ''Film/AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania''.
** Doubling as YouSoundFamiliar, Creator/DeveryJacobs played Bonnie on ''Series/Echo2024'', a mere few weeks after voicing the character Kahhori in season 2 of ''WesternAnimation/WhatIf2021''.

** Creator/EbonMossBachrach played Micro on ''Series/ThePunisher2017'' before being cast as the Thing.
** In the European French dub:
*** Creator/BernardGabay voiced both Tony Stark/Iron Man and Creator/{{Netflix}}'s Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Seeking to avoid having the same voice for two prominent superheroes of the Creator/MarvelStudios side of the MCU is probably the reason why he was replaced by Creator/SylvainAgaesse for ''Film/SpiderManNoWayHome'', ''Series/SheHulkAttorneyAtLaw'' and further installments.
*** Loki (and his variants) sounds the same as Rocket Raccoon. Both are dubbed by Creator/AlexisVictor.
*** Creator/JeremieCovillault has voiced both Doctor Stephen Strange and Ulysses Klaue. And Eddie Brock/Venom from the ''Film/SonysSpiderManUniverse'' in ''Film/SpiderManNoWayHome''.
*** Creator/PaulBorne voiced Nicky Fury in ''Film/IronMan1'', Bill Foster (''Film/AntManAndTheWasp'', being the regular dub voice of Creator/LaurenceFishburne) and Thanos since 2014. Counting the ABC and Netflix series, he also voiced Harvey on ''Series/{{Jessica Jones|2015}}'', Grill on ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'' and Henry "Pop" Hunter on ''Series/{{Luke Cage|2016}}''.
*** Creator/PatrickFloersheim voiced Obadiah Stane in ''Film/IronMan1'' and Hank Pym in ''Film/AntMan1''.
** According to Creator/MarioCastaneda (the Mexican Spanish voice actor for Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner), Disney has a strict policy of not reusing the foreign voice actors of any main characters on other, later-introduced main characters, which is why he was surprised when he was given the role of Bruce Banner after having voiced Doc Sampson in ''Film/{{The Incredible Hulk|2008}}''.[[note]]It's unclear if the recasting of Bruce Banner between films had anything to do with it (Banner in ''The Incredible Hulk'' being played by Edward Norton), or Disney simply considered Doc Sampson a secondary-enough character.[[/note]] However, Creator/{{Netflix}} would give Tony Stark/Iron Man's French voice actor (Bernard Gabay) to Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and Castañeda himself voices Agent Coulson on [[DuelingDubs the Sony Channel's version]] of ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', because those dubs aren't under Disney's control.
