* AscendedFanon:
** At first, Austin didn't bother to come up with a reason [[spoiler:why Yado created the vaccine because "[''LISA: The Joyful'' is] a video game [that] lacks completely credibility".]] He eventually canonized the idea proposed by Charles O. Ward in a [[https://twitter.com/dalm3k/status/738518810102276096 thread]] on Website/{{Twitter}} that [[spoiler:Yado's god complex drove him to make sure that he wouldn't turn into a Joy Mutant himself.]]
%%** [[https://twitter.com/LOVEBRADgames/status/818878243327672321 A strange case in which all fan content is basically canon according to the author.]]
* AuthorsSavingThrow: When the Definitive Edition released, fans were (half-jokingly) outraged that "Work Harder" had had its [[MemeticMutation memetic]] sampling of Delin's "UHUH" grunt from ''VideoGame/ShenmueII'' removed. Dingaling would put out an update a few days after the Definitive Edition release which reintroduced the grunts ''[[DescendedCreator as recorded by Widdly 2 Diddly himself]]'', along with a [[https://twitter.com/DingalingGames/status/1682533490011828225 public apology on twitter]], [[SeriousBusiness acting as if the situation was much more grave than it really was]].
* ColbertBump: Both LetsPlay/VideoGameDunkey and WebVideo/HBomberguy are acknowledged in the "Special Thanks" section of the Definitive Edition for the attention they brought to the games with their videos on ''Painful''.
* CrowdfunderCameo:
** RT, Jack, Garth, Beastborn, Sonny, and Yazan are all party members created by Kickstarter backers. Notably, there were going to be four more backer party members, but they fell through for unknown reasons.
** A few enemies were also created by backers, but the most notable are Slave Lord Jim, Jonathan, and Satan, who are based on [[WebVideo/{{Jimquisition}} Jim Sterling]], [[Podcast/TheDismalJesters Jonathan Holmes]], and [[LetsPlay/{{Nnemonic}} Mike Nnemonic]] respectively.
* CopiouslyCreditedCreator: Austin credits himself as writer, artist, creator, and musician -- just under different names each time.
* DummiedOut:
** Chris Columbo has a battle theme in the soundtrack, and cracking open the game code reveals he has battle stats, so it seems likely that he was actually planned to be a boss at some point.
** The initial Kickstarter short demo and early development screenshots showed Rick Weeks, Sticky and Cheeks Gaywood as party members. Although it's possible that these were red-herrings to avoid spoilers, breaking open the final game code shows battle sprites for Rick and Sticky, so it's unclear how far the two of them got into the actual game before being cut. Cut dialogue also made [[spoiler:the implications that Sticky raped Buddy]] ''much'' more explicit.
** There also exists battle stats for [[spoiler: Sticky and Rick during in their heavily wounded states when Brad confronts them between Area 2 and 3, with the implication that instead of Brad [[CurbStompBattle obliterating them with a fire ball]], they would have [[ZeroEffortBoss tried to fight Brad]], only to fall]].
* RefittedForSequel:
** ''The Painful'' contain a sprite for a unused Joy Mutant form for Peter Smoove. ''The Joyful'' uses a recolor of this sprite for [[spoiler:Dice Mahone]].
** The original ''The Painful'' has a unused [[spoiler: sprite for Olan turned into a Joy Mutant]]. In the Definitive Edition, [[spoiler: Olan can actually turn into a Joy Mutant and uses a slightly edited version of the formerly unused sprite.]]
* TrollingCreator: The "Easy Mode" in ''LISA: The Joyful'' was added in specifically as a [[DearNegativeReader response to players who were complaining about the DLC's difficulty.]] What is Easy Mode? Nothing more than two pitifully easy boss fights (which can be made even more trivial by the joke weapon that the Terry Hintz {{Expy}} gives you) that are completely disconnected from the main story. Funny enough in that same update, Austin [[AuthorsSavingThrow also added in legitimate enhancements to the game]], such as expanding Buddy's move pool so battles aren't as repetitive.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: A consequence of ''LISA: The Painful''[='=]s development being mostly open and taking place over two years is that a lot of story and gameplay elements ended up dropped during production:
** The game was initially titled "The Last Matador", and interviews with Austin Jorgensen imply that it was not originally connected with ''LISA: The First'' until well into development. In fact, Austin's original concept for this game was a ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar''-type setting in which a bunch of ripped dudes beats each other up, then he started to get into the deeper aspects of a world without any women.
** Rick, Sticky and Cheeks were all at one point recruitable party members, and Rick and Sticky still have unused battle sprites and animations in the game code. It's commonly theorized that Rick, Sticky and Cheeks were refitted into Percy, Queen, and Dick, respectively.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56yNo3OZSHA#t=40 pre-alpha gameplay footage]] shows a lot of things that didn't make it into the game. Aside from the aforementioned Rick and Cheeks as party members, the trailer also shows them having a team attack that implies that moves can be done with certain party members in the same party, a sneaking mechanic that seems to be a precursor to the assassinations Buddy can do in ''LISA: The Joyful'', proper battle backgrounds instead of the in-engine generated ones, and more blatant foreshadowing of [[spoiler:Dr. Yado]]. The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXsMG3T5xGY gameplay trailer]] from 2013 also hints at a different plot, with Buddy asking the uncles about a revenge mission.
*** Austin stated that Rando was [[spoiler:originally going to be one of Brad's biological children]] and that Hawk[[note]]Not Hawk Hollywood, but a different, scrapped character[[/note]] was going to compete with Brad to gain Rando's trust, and eventually control the Rando Army. This subplot was scrapped but a DummiedOut sprite references it.
** Columbo has enemy battle data in the final game code and an unused battle theme in the soundtrack but isn't fought in the game proper.
** The very first Joy Mutant you can encounter, Punkert, initially had a larger role in the game as one of Brad's friends, ditching him, Rick, Sticky and Cheeks for being lame, only for you to later encounter him as a mutant. A pair of screenshots on the wiki imply he also would have been part of the audience in the RussianRoulette sidequest.
** There's a lot of unused sprites in the files. Some interesting ones include Dick wearing yellow, an octopus with a man's face, some more sprites of Iori Stevens, The unused character Hawk in Rando's robe and [[spoiler:some sprites of Brad in the process of mutating.]]
** An early [[http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/games/4719/screenshots/characters.png teaser image]] shows sprites for multiple party members and characters, a few of which go unused.
** A gameplay feature that ended up being cut for time was specific side quests for different party members, in the end, Bo was the only one who ended up with his own side quest, searching for his lost brother.
** There were initially supposed to be ten Kickstarter backer characters, but four of them fell through for one reason or another, and the game only ended up with six (Beastborn, Garth, RT, Yazan, Jack, and Sonny).
** A completely different set of party members are listed in the game's data as Joy Addicts, but due to either a bug or deliberate removal, the variable that prompts their withdrawal status never switches. These include Rage, RT, Garth, Sonny, Birdie, and Fly. The Definitive Edition fixes this bug and these characters now suffer withdrawal.
** Austin Jorgensen had mentioned in interviews that he originally wanted to put several reference characters in ''LISA'' (mentioning the USA Sports Team from ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters'' specifically), and sprites for quite a few of them do exist in the sprite sheet, but in the end none made the cut save for [[{{Expy}} Expies]] of [[VideoGame/Mother3 Lucas]], [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros the Mario Bros.]], and [[VideoGame/EarthBound1994 Everdred]].
** The sprites for Mr. Beautiful and his gang appear in the artbook for ''The Painful'', implying that they were going to debut in that game before ultimately being RefittedForSequel. The book is the [[AllThereInTheManual only place]] where the gang's full name, Beautiful Baby Boys, is revealed.
** The fight against Sindy Gallows in ''LISA: The Joyful'' was added last minute, which implies that [[spoiler:he was originally supposed to stay dead and the cultists that killed him was the real fight.]]
* WriteWhatYouKnow: Austin is actually a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSud7WAVhcw professional martial artist]], leading to the game's emphasis on and jokes about Kung Fu, including Bob Friday's [[http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/McDojo [=McDojo=]]] where you can just buy a diploma.
* WriteWhoYouKnow:
** Austin Jorgensen has stated in interviews that the idea behind ''The First'' (and, later, Brad in ''The Painful RPG'') was based on an ex-girlfriend who was scarred by memories of her abusive father, as it had made him realize how much memories can affect people.
