----
* ActingInTheDark: The scene where Flash {{Face Plant}}s in Wonder Woman's cleavage was filmed with Creator/EzraMiller and a body double substituting for Creator/GalGadot. Gadot filmed her reaction shot at a different time and place (apparently without being told what scene she was filming it for), and the two shots were spliced together. This caused much HostilityOnTheSet between Gadot and Whedon, among other things.
* ActorSharedBackground: Barry mentions being Jewish as is Ezra Miller in real life.
* AscendedFancast: Creator/JoeManganiello as Deathstroke came about [[https://screenrant.com/joe-manganiello-deathstroke-dceu-fan-art/ because the producers found]] fanart of the popular fancast.
* BillingDisplacement: Despite not being part of the TeamTitle, Creator/AmyAdams (Lois Lane) is billed third behind Creator/BenAffleck (Batman) and Creator/HenryCavill (Superman) and above Creator/GalGadot (Wonder Woman), while Creator/DianeLane (Martha Kent) is billed sixth after Creator/JasonMomoa (Aquaman) but above Creator/EzraMiller (The Flash) and Creator/RayFisher (Cyborg).
* BoxOfficeBomb: With a budget estimated at $300 million ($500 million counting marketing, interest expense, and residuals), ''Justice League'' is among the most expensive movies ever made,[[note]]Its production budget alone is around twice what is typical for big superhero movies. ''Film/{{Wonder Woman|2017}}'', ''Film/ThorRagnarok'', ''Film/SpiderManHomecoming'', ''Film/XMenApocalypse,'' and ''Film/{{Suicide Squad|2016}}'' all came out within a year of it, and their budgets varied between $149 and $178 million.[[/note]] and so needed to gross a massive amount just to break even ($750 million at the highest estimate, $650 million at the lowest). It opened in a surprisingly competitive season on the release calendar[[note]]Creator/OwenWilson and Creator/JuliaRoberts' film adaptation of ''Literature/Wonder2012'' opened at the same time and proved to be an incredibly strong family film (giving parents a much gentler option to take their children to) and the much better received ''Film/ThorRagnarok'' was still in the middle of its own box office run, drawing away viewers. ''Series/ThePunisher2017'' and ''VideoGame/{{Star Wars Battlefront II|2017}}'' were also released on the same date, giving many comic book movie[=/=]TV[=/=]video game fans a reason to stay home instead. Disney-Pixar's ''WesternAnimation/{{Coco}}'' opened a week later and blew all competition out of the water.[[/note]], and its opening domestic weekend of $93.8 million, likely due to negative publicity from ''Batman v Superman'' and ''Suicide Squad'' and its notoriously {{troubled production}}, was only about half of the former and the lowest of any DCEU film thus far, combined with a lackluster promotional campaign and another critical backlash after a long embargo. [[https://www.forbes.com/sites/robcain/2017/11/20/warner-bros-faces-a-possible-50m-to-100m-loss-on-justice-league/#5e80a1e25d8b Industry]] [[https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/12/12/justice-league-is-the-biggest-grossing-box-office-bomb-ever/#30898c6f7942 analysts]] predicted a $50 to $100 million net loss for Warner Brothers. The film has earned the [[MedalOfDishonor dubious title]] of [[https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/12/12/justice-league-is-the-biggest-grossing-box-office-bomb-ever/#62f3eb9b7942 "the most successful box office bomb ever"]], as while its gross ($658 million) would be a nice success for a standard summer blockbuster with a production budget in the $140-180 million range, the power of the Batman and Superman brands plus the [[TroubledProduction extremely inflated]] budget due to mandated reshoots led to far, far higher expectations than what were ultimately fulfilled, leading to the loss.
* CreatorBacklash: Yes, [[CreatorBacklash/JusticeLeague2017 this movie has its own page.]]
* CreatorBreakdown:
** After Creator/ZackSnyder's daughter Autumn tragically died by suicide during post-production, he continued working on the film for about a month, but when reshoots were scheduled in England, he decided to step away from the project to spend time with his family. Creator/JossWhedon took over as director and scriptwriter for those sequences.
** Ben Affleck also had a rough time from this movie due to the stress of the reshoots, in addition to going through issues in his personal life, which led to him relapsing back into alcoholism. He's since gotten clean, but it's clear he didn't enjoy his time with Whedon.
%%%
%% Examples of Creator Killer are not allowed until ten years after the work's release. The only exceptions are if a studio or production company attached to it officially shuts down or the person passes away before the ten year mark.
%%%
* CreatorsPest: In 2022, Creator/JossWhedon said that he reduced Cyborg's role because the storyline "logically made no sense" and he felt that Creator/RayFisher's acting was bad.
* DeletedRole: A huge number of roles filmed by Snyder didn't make it to the 2017 theatrical cut due to the [[ExecutiveMeddling exec-mandated changes]] Whedon brought following Snyder's departure as well as the 2-hours runtime. They were restored with the 2021 film.
** ComicBook/NewGods: ComicBook/{{Darkseid}} (Creator/RayPorter), [=DeSaad=] (Creator/PeterGuinness) and Granny Goodness.
** Humans: Iris West (Creator/KierseyClemons), Elinore Stone (Creator/KarenBryson), [[ComicBook/TheAtom Ryan Choi]] (Creator/RyanZheng), Linda Reed (the StrugglingSingleMother played by C. Amanda Maud), Ray Porter's [[TheCameo cameo]] as an ancient blacksmith, Officer Jerry (the RemakeCameo of Creator/MarcMcClure), Creator/ZackSnyder's own CreatorCameo, the rescued schoolgirl Wonder Woman talks to, the chanting women in Iceland (including the one played by Creator/SalomeGunnarsdottir), the Gotham City University dean and the dog daycare owner Barry Allen wants to work for. In addition, the human forces who took part to the battle against Darkseid's forces in ''ZSJL'' include East Asians, Africans and Middle-Easterners -- those too were deleted from the 2017 film.
** Amazons: Antiope (Creator/RobinWright is credited, but didn't appear save for maybe a split-second shot during the charge against Steppenwolf in the "History Lesson"), Epione (Creator/EleanorMatsuura).
** Others: Nuidis Vulko (Creator/WillemDafoe).
** ComicBook/MartianManhunter is a special case, his scenes weren't filmed due to ExecutiveVeto. As was the planned Franchise/GreenLantern scene, though Kilowog's dead body is seen in the "Knightmare" scene of the 2021 film.
* {{Deleted Scene}}s: [[http://www.reelanarchy.com/how-much-snyder-cut-footage-is-actually-in-justice-league/ A pretty sizeable number of scenes]] that were filmed by Creator/ZackSnyder have been scrapped when the film was modified in post-production under Creator/JossWhedon, including the {{Missing Trailer Scene}}s below. Some scenes have been replaced by Whedon's reshoots also, to "brighten" them as much as possible and insert his dialogues (or, as some speculate, to try having Whedon get a director credit per DGA rules like Richard Lester had when he took over ''Film/SupermanII'' -- it didn't happen here). The full extent of what was deleted/modified can be measured when comparing the film and ''Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague'', the examples below were collected via trailers, leaked work-in-progress VFX sequences and Snyder's own posted images on the social media Vero long before Snyder's version of the film came out.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxquS8JYUuY One of these]] shows Clark returning to the Kryptonian ship, finding two new suits there: the long-awaited black suit and a Kryptonian space suit similar to the ones worn by Zod and his crew when they explored abandoned Kryptonian outposts in ''Film/ManOfSteel''.
** One other is one of the {{Missing Trailer Scene}}s, specifically the most speculated upon trailer bit with a glass and water effect ala ''Film/JurassicPark'' and where Alfred greets someone with "they said you would come, now let's hope you're not too late". It confirms it was Superman coming to him all along.
** A scene with Barry Allen saving Iris West from a car accident was leaked and had unfinished special effects. The part with Barry destroying a window with the tip of his finger at high speed is a MissingTrailerScene.
*** Zack Snyder later shared a screenshot of a scene between Barry and Iris, with the comment "Cute couple".
** Victor Stone/Cyborg's backstory, including a football match before the accident that crippled him. It briefly appears as a MissingTrailerScene, a VFX company released a few seconds of it (including Victor's mother Elinore crying of joy when he scores a victory for the GCU team) and there are set photos.
** Victor/Cyborg projecting himself in a Nazi Germany setting in virtual reality, exploring it using a recreation of his bygone human body wearing his Gotham City University jacket. Again, some parts are {{Missing Trailer Scene}}s.
** Victor/Cyborg digging at a "family plot" (his family's?). Zack Snyder shared a screenshot of the scene on Vero, and cinematographer Fabian Wagner followed suit with a behind-the-scene photo of it on Instagram.
** A Parademon landing outside the Stone family's apartment, with Cyborg hiding from it.
** Another leaked scene with unfinished special effects shows Cyborg learning to fly on a rooftop.
** The unearthing of Superman was reshot. The scene as originally shot included Wonder Woman and Aquaman in addition to Flash and Cyborg, and judging by the photo released by Zack Snyder on his Vero account, it looked more serious and solemn.
*** A leaked scene shows the League carrying Superman's coffin into the Flying Fox and Cyborg turning at the camera.
** A photo shows Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Flash in a combat-ready stance in what looks like a fight taking place at S.T.A.R. Labs.
** A behind-the-scenes clip shows the League (with Superman, and a clean-shaven Henry Cavill, indicating this was not a reshoot) looking at something that produces lightning.
** Creator/JasonMomoa confirmed that the present-day parts of ''Film/{{Aquaman|2018}}'' start where Zack Snyder's cut of ''Justice League'' left off. He talked about a scene where Vulko and [[https://i1.wp.com/batman-news.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Mera-First-Look-Final-Photo.jpg?resize=696%2C696&quality=80&strip=info&ssl=1 Mera come to Arthur in Iceland]] to convince him to return to Atlantis. He refuses, downs a bottle of booze and [[https://i.redd.it/j1fvgkh90oj01.png leaves in the back of a pickup truck]].
** A behind-the-scene shot from the October 2016 wrap-up video shows that there was a scene taking place at Wayne Manor. The "room for more" scene at Wayne Manor from the theatrical is a 2017 reshoot by Joss Whedon.
** Stuntman Nick [=McKinless=] (who played Ares) confirmed that Darkseid led the invasion of Earth in ancient times, and that the Gods of Olympus battled him.
** Zack Snyder shared photos of a scene in which Silas Stone is disintegrated by the Mother Box, with Cyborg watching helplessly. A shot of it made it to the March 2017 trailer, and is, again, {{missing|trailer scene}}.
** Photos shared by Snyder and Jason Momoa showed that Steppenwolf was initially to be skewered by Aquaman's quindent, then punched by Superman, then decapitated by Diana, with his headless corpse and head being sucked in a Boom-Tube and his head rolling at Darkseid's feet on the other side. When commenting on the scene, Snyder said "[[TakesOneToKillOne I use gods to kill gods]]". The decapitation was replaced by Superman freezing Steppenwolf's electro-axe in the theatrical version, with Diana smashing the axe to pieces instead of cutting his head off, the Parademons zerg-rushing a frightened Steppenwolf and them all being sucked back to Apokolips via the Boom-Tube.
* DevelopmentGag: Possibly; in Snyder's version, the Mother Boxes are sentient and malevolent, while here they don't appear to be but Steppenwolf [[CompanionCube talks to them and treats them like they are]]. That said, it's hard to tell if this is intentional or just a by-product of Steppenwolf's AdaptationalPersonalityChange.
* DuelingWorks:
** With ''Film/ThorRagnarok''. Both feature superheroes teaming up to save a world from a destructive deity who wears a horned helmet and is hell-bent on dominating said world. Bonus point for coming out just two weeks before ''Justice League''. According to ''[[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/justice-league-dc-hopes-land-a-punch-marvel-1058409 The Hollywood Reporter]]'', the rivalry was taken very seriously by the WB corporate executives, who felt that a formerly B-level Marvel character like Thor outperforming a team of DC's A-listers like Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman would be a huge embarrassment. ''Ragnarok'' had a significantly better critical reception (92% Website/RottenTomatoes score against Justice League's 40%) ''and'' box office performance ($853 million worldwide gross against Justice League's $656 million).
** There's also the Arrowverse crossover: ''Series/CrisisOnEarthX''. The Nazi Regime of Earth-X mounts an attempted invasion of Earth-1 and the heroes of [[Series/TheFlash2014 Team Flash]], [[Series/{{Arrow}} Team Arrow]], [[Series/LegendsOfTomorrow The Legends]], plus heroes from [[Series/Supergirl2015 Earth-38]] and one [[WesternAnimation/FreedomFightersTheRay hero from Earth-X - the Ray]] unite to stop them. While the crossover had its own flaws (mainly regarding RomanticPlotTumor), it was overall ''far'' better received than ''Justice League''.
** Netflix released ''Series/ThePunisher2017'' the same weekend, featuring the BreakoutCharacter from the second season of ''Series/{{Daredevil|2015}}''.
* DyeingForYourArt:
** Creator/JasonMomoa dyed part of his hair blonde for his role as ComicBook/{{Aquaman}}, and had to spend hours doing the tattoos in his arms. Ultimately, he said it helped him get in the role easier than Creator/RayFisher's "pajamas" (given most of Cyborg's appearance is digital).
** While ultimately averted, it was initially thought that Creator/JKSimmons went through an extensive training routine for what's apparently going to be an incredibly buff Gordon. [[http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/jk-simmons-explains-why-justice-leagues-commissioner-gordon-is-so-jacked He later clarified]] that it was a personal decision made years ago to take better care of himself and not related to his role as Gordon.
* ExecutiveMeddling:
** Due to the backlash against ''Batman v. Superman'', WB exerted much more control this time. This included a [[http://collider.com/justice-league-runtime-budget-revealed/ mandatory]] runtime of under two hours (despite Snyder's previous two DC movies being longer than 2 hours, and such runtime being common in superhero films[[note]]''Film/SpiderManHomecoming'' for instance had a run time of 2 hours and 13 minutes[[/note]]) and making sure that the tone was lighter and less depressing, even though Snyder maintains the latter was always part of his plan. He pointed out that it was always going to be lighter since Flash was going to be in the team, although the humor that was eventually added to the film clearly has Joss Whedon's thumbprint.
** Reshoots were decided upon, and Joss Whedon was hired to write them with Snyder originally said to direct it. But then Snyder pulled out to spend time with his family after the loss of his adopted daughter Autumn, and Whedon directed these reshoots, which were initially reported to be minor but ultimately proved to be extensive. Many scenes of the principal photography were scrapped (including all those featuring Darkseid), most of Superman's and Steppenwolf's scenes are reshoots, the digital colour grading was brightened up, Music/JunkieXL's soundtrack was ditched and replaced by that of Music/DannyElfman, and additional scenes, mostly close-ups and inserts, were added in.
** Even the ''Whedon scenes'' that stemmed from executive meddling were meddled with. For instance, Whedon had to tweak the Batman scene with Creator/HoltMcCallany at the beginning because it wasn't serious enough -- execs found it too comedic.
* ExecutiveVeto:
** Related to the above, Snyder and Chris Terrio had a first version of the script that was deemed "too scary" by studio execs. In Snyder's own words, it was "so crazy that there would have been mass hysteria in the streets" (it mainly concerned the buildup towards the Knightmare of ''Batman v Superman'', which was basically to be HowWeGotHere over two films and included the murder of Lois Lane by Darkseid, as well as Steppenwolf's design and Darkseid himself). They rewrote it, and principal photography was about that second version of the script. ''Then'' there were new exec vetos on what he had filmed (the much-talked-about "Snyder Cut"), and the main part of the TroubledProduction that resulted in the theatrical cut started there.
** In his interview at the Justice Con in July 2020, Snyder revealed that studio execs vetoed the use of the black suit for Superman. He complied and shot the scenes with the normal Superman suit, but made sure the suit was made of specific materials and colors so he could easily digitally darken it later in case he was allowed to release a Director's Cut... [[Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague the rest is history]].
* FakeNationality: None of the actors playing the Russian family is Russian.
* FollowTheLeader: Some of Warner Bros' [[ExecutiveMeddling executives pushed]] for this movie to be more like ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'', allegedly bringing in ''Avengers'' director Creator/JossWhedon for rewrites and reshoots precisely in the hopes that they could get some of that same "magic" in.
* FollowUpFailure: Followed ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' in Whedon's resume, and was far less well received.
* HostilityOnTheSet: With regards to Creator/JossWhedon's tenure as the replacement director.
** Creator/RayFisher has been especially vocal about his displeasure at having worked with Whedon, [[https://variety.com/2020/film/news/ray-fisher-joss-whedon-justice-league-1234695831/ accusing him of being unprofessional, abusive, and creating a toxic work environment]]. The fact that Creator/JasonMomoa, Creator/GalGadot (who herself had alleged that Whedon "threatened to ruin [her] career" and refused to film certain scenes for the reshoots, necessitating a body double to be used in them), and other actors who'd worked with Whedon on previous projects (particularly Franchise/BuffyVerse alumni Creator/CharismaCarpenter, Creator/SarahMichelleGellar, and Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg) openly expressed solidarity with Fisher only further backed up his claims.
** Whedon claimed that Gadot suggested that he didn't understand how superhero movies worked (despite his success on ''Film/TheAvengers2012'' and ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron''). At one point, Whedon paused the shoot and, according to a crew member, announced that he had never worked with "a ruder group of people", causing the actors to fall silent. Fisher told ''The Hollywood Reporter'' that when he voiced concerns about Cyborg's portrayal to Whedon, he cut him off, saying "It feels like I'm taking notes right now and I don't like taking notes from anybody — not even Creator/RobertDowneyJr" He has denied Fisher's accusations, saying that they were not "either true or merited discussing:
--->We're talking about a malevolent force. We're talking about a bad actor in both senses.
** Gadot claimed that Whedon forced her to record lines she didn't like, threatened to harm her career and disparaged Creator/PattyJenkins. Whedon later claimed that Gadot "misunderstood" him due to English not being her first language, to which she responded by saying that she "understood him perfectly".
** Fisher has also been harshly critical of the higher-ups in DC and Creator/WarnerMedia, especially Creator/GeoffJohns, [[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/ray-fisher-opens-up-about-justice-league-joss-whedon-and-warners-i-dont-believe-some-of-these-people-are-fit-for-leadership accusing him of willfully ignoring and enabling Whedon's behavior]]. He also singled out Walter Hamada (who became head of Creator/DCFilms after the ''Justice League'' debacle), accusing him of covering Johns.
* LyingCreator:
** When the news broke that Creator/JossWhedon was taking over directing duties following Zack Snyder's departure, WB execs said that Whedon would only be overseeing minor reshoots and the finished film would be following Snyder's plan. Viewers quickly caught on that the movie was much more extensively reworked than previously let on, and comparing the 2017 theatrical version and Snyder's 2021 cut is quite telling about the differences between what Snyder made and the finished 2017 product.
** Fabian Wagner, Snyder's cinematographer for this movie, famously claimed that only 10% of the footage in the theatrical version was his and the rest were a result of reshoots. At least half the footage in the theatrical cut is Snyder's in some way, shape, or form -- including content that he shot for the studio, but didn't include in his version of the movie.
* MeaningfulReleaseDate:
** Came out on the 25th anniversary of ''ComicBook/TheDeathOfSuperman'' (17 November 1992).
** The release date is the sixteenth anniversary of the first episode of the Franchise/DCAnimatedUniverse ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague'' series.
** The trailer for this film was released on March 25, 2017, exactly one year after the release of ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice''.
* MilestoneCelebration: 2017 is the centennial of Creator/JackKirby's birth, and the ComicBook/NewGods / Fourth World series makes their cinematic premiere in this film (Steppenwolf, the Parademons and the Mother Boxes are all his creations). This would make ''Film/JusticeLeague2017'' ''the fifth''[[note]] after ''Film/{{Logan}}'' (Professor X, the X-Men, and mutants), ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2'' (Groot and Ego the Living Planet), ''Film/SpiderManHomecoming'' (Iron Man) and ''Film/ThorRagnarok'' (Thor and the Hulk)[[/note]] and last superhero film in the same year to feature Kirby's creations and co-creations, and the only one from DC Comics. Fittingly, the film came out two weeks after ''Film/ThorRagnarok'', and Kirby often mentioned that he envisioned the Fourth World as the SpiritualSuccessor to his work on ''ComicBook/TheMightyThor''.
* MissingTrailerScene: A ''lot'' of moments of the trailers didn't make it to the theatrical version. Among these:
** Bruce and Diana discussing about Aquaman ("More 'more' or more 'less'?").
** Bruce riding a horse to the remote village where Arthur was staying for the moment.
** Wonder Woman's bracers' shockwave breaking the windows of the Old Bailey court and policemen and rescue services taking cover.
** Dialogue between Bruce and Diana: "They said the age of heroes would never come again." "It has to."
** Bruce looking at a hologram of Superman (or a hologram of Superman's costume).
** The activation of the Mother Box of the Stone family in their apartment.
** Shots of Mera moving underwater.
** Victor Stone before his accident, during a football match and walking in a street with his GCU jacket. The latter is actually part of a DeletedScene in which Cyborg projects himself in a Nazi Germany setting in virtual reality, using a recreation of his bygone human body to explore it. The trailer itself [[NoSwastikas replaced the Nazi swastika]] banner with a yellow banner with another symbol.
** Barry Allen breaking a window with the tip of his finger. (it's part of the DeletedScene in which he saves Iris West from a car accident)
** Steppenwolf's "No protectors here. No Lanterns, no Kryptonian" quote.
** The AllMythsAreTrue moment between Cyborg and Batman ("I'm real when it's useful").
** Wonder Woman's "We don't engage alone, we do this together!".
** Batman tossing Aquaman his trident.
** Cyborg saving a cop by stopping a thrown humvee with his shoulders.
** Cyborg saving people by blasting debris that were falling on them.
** Flash making a prayer-like gesture with his hands.
** The "I'll take that as a yes. The ring." quote between Clark and Lois.
** Flash using his speed to dodge a Parademon's blaster fire and make the Parademon crash through metal doors.
** Alfred's "They said you would come. Let's hope you're not too late!" scene.
* OrphanedReference: In this version, Steppenwolf [[CompanionCube talking to the Mother Boxes]] just comes off as one of his quirks, while in Snyder's original version, they actually ''are'' sentient and malevolent (although Steppenwolf doesn't converse much with them there). Might also count as DevelopmentGag.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Ares briefly appears in the flashback showing Steppenwolf's first invasion of Earth, played by bodybuilder and stuntman Nick [=McKinless=]. He was played by Creator/DavidThewlis in ''Film/{{Wonder Woman|2017}}''.
** Creator/YoshimasaHosoya replaced Chikahiro Kobayashi as the Flash in the Japanese dub.
** Creator/ThierryDesroses replaced Jean-Paul Pitolin as Silas Stone for the French dub.
* TheOtherMarty: A non-acting example; [[Music/JunkieXL Tom Holkenborg]] was at one point onboard to write and compose the music for the film, having previously worked on ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice''. But on June 2017, Creator/DannyElfman was announced to have replaced him as the soundtrack's composer. This was reversed when Holkenborg came back to compose for ''Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague''.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/JKSimmons, best known for playing the superhero-hating [[Film/SpiderManTrilogy J. Jonah Jameson]] (as well as voicing the equally-untrusting of superheroes [[WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague General Wade Eiling]]), plays the superhero-allied Commissioner Gordon here.
** While Creator/CiaranHinds is no stranger to villainous roles, playing Steppenwolf (a motion-capture character in a big-budget superhero movie) is a bit of a different turn for him, given he's mostly known for his work as a character actor on the stage and television.
* RoleReprise: The Brazilian Portuguese dub has Marcos Souza as Cyborg, like in ''Series/{{Smallville}}'', and Ricardo Schnetzer as Slade Wilson, following ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans2003'' and ''Series/{{Arrow}}''.
* SendingStuffToSaveTheShow: A rather unusual movie example. A fan movement arose after the theatrical release with the aim of getting Warner Bros. to release a director's cut of ''Justice League'' with all the scrapped footage that Zack Snyder filmed and devoid of the infamous Joss Whedon additions. It started with letters and phone calls aimed at Warner Bros. executives. Then some fans started a fundraiser and advertisement campaign for the Snyder Cut with 50% of the proceeds going to the [[UsefulNotes/{{Suicide}} American Foundation for Suicide Prevention]] that Snyder has supported since his daughter Autumn's death, and the rest was used to campaign for the cut at the San Diego Comic Con 2019. Further fundraising was used to bring the campaign to [[UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity Times Square]] billboards, alongside campaigns to send letters to new Warner Bros CEO Ann Sarnoff. WB initially stayed silent on the matter, but they later allowed Snyder to complete and release his version. ''Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague'' would finally see the light of day on Creator/HBOMax in 2021.
* SeparatedAtBirthCasting: Ezra Miller and Creator/BillyCrudup are strikingly similar in appearance, which makes them very believable as father and son.
* ShowAccuracyToyAccuracy:
** According to [[https://www.comicbookmovie.com/justice_league/justice-league-first-look-at-mattels-range-of-official-action-figures-and-batmobile-revealed-a151687 ComicBookMovie]], Franchise/{{Superman}}'s action figure looks more like ''Film/SupermanReturns'' actor Creator/JamesMarsden than Creator/HenryCavill.
** The talking Wonder Woman figure lacks any sort of accent.
* SparedByTheCut:
** Victor and Silas Stone have a HappyEnding in this version, it was part of the Whedon reshoots. In ''Zack Snyder's Justice League'', Silas is disintegrated by the lasers reflected by the Mother Box.
** Steppenwolf is beamed back to Apokolips instead of being [[OffWithHisHead beheaded]] by Wonder Woman in the other version of the film.
** Cyborg, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Aquaman get disintegrated by the detonation of the Mother Boxes' Unity in ''ZSJL'', which is quickly undone by Flash's TimeTravel via the Speedforce. It was all cut from the 2017 version of the film.
* SpoiledByTheMerchandise:
** The first group poster of the entire League with Superman was revealed for movie theater promotions like popcorn buckets (an early group image was shown for Comic Con 2016, but actual posters left him absent).
** The first images of the BigBad Steppenwolf were Lego figurines and (accurate) action figures.
** Averted in one case. The movie's action figure line from Creator/{{Mattel}} showed Superman wearing a black costume, causing a number of outlets to speculate that Superman would sport his black resurrection outfit from ''Comicbook/TheDeathOfSuperman'' after his return. [[spoiler: In the actual movie, he does not wear a black costume, even after being revived. He does find a black suit in a DeletedScene, but doesn't put it on.]]
* ThrowItIn: Aquaman shaking his hair like a surfer after riding a Parademon through a building was intended as a joke by Momoa, the "shampoo commercial" take. He was amazed they went with it.
* TroubledProduction: A ''very'' deeply troubled one at that, and the chaos undeniably affected the final product.
** Following the criticisms over ''Batman v Superman'', the Creator/DCFilms studio was created and Creator/WarnerBros executives forced changes to Creator/ZackSnyder's and Chris Terrio's script (less of the divisive dark tone[[note]]This was originally part of Snyder's plan anyway, as he'd intended for [=BvS=] to be the darkest in the series and then have the subsequent films be lighter in tone[[/note]], shortening the plot from [[MovieMultipack a two-parter]] to a standalone). They also mandated that the movie be two hours long despite Snyder's insistence that would be close to impossible, as this movie would be introducing three new characters (Aquaman, Cyborg, and Flash) in addition to establishing the villains.
** Principal photography went smoothly for the most part. Then Snyder left in May 2017 following his adopted daughter Autumn's suicide. WB execs brought in Creator/JossWhedon, who was already brought in to help with rewrites (given he struck gold making [[Film/TheAvengers2012 the Marvel equivalent]]), to reshape the movie according to their demands since they found the early cut Snyder turned in before his departure to be "unwatchable". Contrary to what they once claimed, they never did test screenings on Snyder's version, and some of the 2017 executives who attended a screening of Snyder's version in late 2019 leading up to its 2020 announcement admitted they never even ''watched'' it before ordering reshoots.
** Whedon oversaw multiple rewrites to the script (reportedly, over 80 pages of it were rewritten) and reshoots meant to bring in a [[LighterAndSofter brighter tone and more humor]]. This wound up almost entirely overhauling the film, scrapping large parts of Snyder's footage. Creator/RayFisher said only ''thirty seconds'' of his appearance in the 2017 film were shot under Snyder. This came at a high cost due to the nightmare of scheduling (reshoots started in July 2017, the film was due to release in ''November'' of that year) and development around four actors who were busy elsewhere (Creator/GalGadot who’d just had a baby in March was touring to promote ''Film/{{Wonder Woman|2017}}'', Creator/EzraMiller was filming ''Film/FantasticBeastsTheCrimesOfGrindelwald'', Jason Momoa was filming ''Film/{{Aquaman|2018}}'' and Creator/HenryCavill was filming ''Film/MissionImpossibleFallout''), while having heightened animosity because of the stressful production and Joss Whedon's behavior. The conditions led to Creator/BenAffleck relapsing into alcoholism and giving up on a Batman solo movie.
** Several of these rewrites led to [[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/amp/features/ray-fisher-opens-up-about-justice-league-joss-whedon-and-warners-i-dont-believe-some-of-these-people-are-fit-for-leadership?__twitter_impression=true conflicts with the actors]] - especially Fisher, who objected to the stark way much of his character's backstory was removed and the racial implications of some of the changes. A 2020 investigation on the film's production found out there were threats on the careers of some actors (namely Fisher and Creator/GalGadot) by Creator/GeoffJohns and Whedon respectively.
** Executives refused to change the scheduled release date (see ChristmasRushed above), and post-production had the bonus of Creator/DannyElfman's score [[https://www.comicbookmovie.com/justice_league/danny-elfman-describes-justice-leagues-chaotic-production-had-to-score-storyboards-not-actual-footage-a155619 being hastily written]] based on ''storyboards'' instead of completed footage, and many effects not being up to snuff. In the case of the latter, the most infamous of these came in the form of the botched attempts to cover up Henry Cavill's facial hair, which he grew out for his role in ''Mission Impossible'' and was forbidden to shave off by Creator/{{Paramount}} executives.

* WordOfGod: Long before HBO Max made it possible to release it, Zack Snyder confirmed he had close to five hours of footage filmed before his departure from the project, and he shared numerous storyboards, screenshots, and story elements of it on his Vero account since early 2018. This, along with the many {{missing trailer scene}}s, went on to confirm that the rewrites and reshoots done under Joss Whedon were much more extensive than WB chairman Toby Emmerich claimed.
