* DuellingWorks: Creator/{{ITV}} premiered ''Series/BuckRogersInTheTwentyFifthCentury'' at the same time as the serial’s first episode, during the midst of a huge campaign. ITV’s attempt to compete is credited as a major reason for the stagnant views of ''Who'''s 18th season. Small audiences tuned in, and more continued to tune out each week. By the third week, ''Doctor Who'' had done something it hadn’t in eighteen years: fall out of the top one-hundred programmes for the week it aired.
* EarlyDraftTieIn: The novelization was a SelfAdaptation by original writer David Fisher; as he originally wrote the serial as a comedic parody of gangster movies before Creator/JohnNathanTurner ordered a MidDevelopmentGenreShift to make it a political drama, Fisher based the novelization on his original draft.
* MidDevelopmentGenreShift: Writer David Fisher originally envisaged the story as a humorous pastiche of gangster movies, in keeping with the tone of the previous few seasons under Creator/GrahamWilliams and Creator/DouglasAdams. The desire of the new production team of Creator/JohnNathanTurner and Creator/ChristopherHBidmead to make ''Doctor Who'' more serious and science-focused meant the story ended up becoming a dystopian drama. Remnants of the original idea are still present in Fisher's novelization of the serial, however.
* RealLifeRelative: The baby Pangol was played by Alys Dyer, whose mother was production unit manager Angela Smith.
* TroubledProduction: Production of the serial was extremely challenging:
** Creator/TomBaker and Creator/LallaWard's tumultuous off-screen relationship was at a nadir. The two were also vocally opposed to practically all of the changes that Creator/JohnNathanTurner instituted, and as this was the first story of the season to be produced, the combination of CreativeDifferences and actor hostility caused the mood on set to be distinctly chilly right from the start.
** Director Lovett Bickford's management of the shoot caused it to go so badly over budget that Creator/JohnNathanTurner was severely reprimanded by his superiors. Bickford would never work on the series again.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/SianPhillips was offered the role of Mena.
** Creator/JohnNathanTurner planned on ditching the Fourth Doctor's scarf starting with this story, but backed down after costume designer June Hudson refused to comply. The pair compromised by instead giving the Doctor a new burgundy outfit with a red and purple version of the scarf that blended in with his coat rather than popping out against it.
* WorkingTitle: ''The Argolins'' and ''Avalon''.
* YouLookFamiliar: Laurence Payne had previously played [[Recap/DoctorWhoS3E8TheGunfighters Johnny Ringo]].
