Context Trivia / Battleship

!!The board game:
* CashCowFranchise: There have been countless variations of Battleship over the years, including a vaguely realistic fleet-based RTS (Simply packaged under the name Battleship), a vehicular combat game (Battleship: Surface Thunder), and the latest version of half ''VideoGame/NavalOps'', half ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty'' (more of a tie in with [[Film/{{Battleship}} the movie]] with little else in common with the classic game). The most popular remains "Two people with five ships shout/punch in numbers and reply with 'hit' or 'miss'," which also tends to come packaged (with minor variations) with many of the Battleship spinoffs.
* FollowTheLeader: Besides the original version, there's ''a lot'' of clones of this game, physical or computer versions.
* ReferencedBy: ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory1'': One of the presents that Andy receives for his birthday is the ''Battleship'' board game. In a later scene, Hamm and Mr. Potato Head are seen playing ''Battleship'', with the former winning against the latter.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: There're versions out there where the aircraft carrier figure has an angled deck as modern ones and change the name of the ships -the battleship is now a cruiser, the cruiser a destroyer, and the destroyer a minesweeper/corvette-, as battleships are no longer in service in any navy.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** If ''[[Trivia/Revolution2016 Unit:E]]'' had managed to launch, the crew of the ''ISN Everest'' from the ''Battleship Galaxies'' game would've fought alongside many other Hasbro heroes.

!!The film:
* BackedByThePentagon: The film was shot on several US Navy warships, with active and retired military personnel both in front of and behind the camera.
* CastTheExpert: Former Navy personnel who served on the USS ''Missouri'' were cast as extras in the film. However, the ship hasn't moved under its own power since its 1992 decommission.
* DisabledCharacterDisabledActor: Gregory D. Gadson (who plays Lt. Colonel Mick Canales) had no acting experience prior and was cast due to being a double amputee combat veteran.
* FakeAmerican: Creator/LiamNeeson (Irish), Taylor Kitsch (Canadian), Alexander Skarsgard (Swedish), Rihanna (Barbadian), and John Tui (New Zealander).
* RecursiveAdaptation: The film adaptation of the board game was also turned into a board game.
* StarDerailingRole:
** A downplayed case for Creator/TaylorKitsch. Despite his career in harm's way by the failures of this movie, ''Film/JohnCarter'', '''and''' ''Film/{{Savages}}'', he managed to snag a supporting role in the well-received ''Film/LoneSurvivor'' a year later. He still manages to find film and TV work such as the second season of ''Series/TrueDetective'', ''Film/AmericanAssassin'', ''Series/{{Waco}}'', ''Film/TwentyOneBridges'', and ''Series/TheTerminalList'', but more of a supporting player and less of a main lead. At the very least, his performances in the aforementioned projects have been met with slightly more praise.
** Any chance Creator/BrooklynDecker had at becoming a movie star was ended by this movie and ''Film/JustGoWithIt''. She now sticks to her modeling career and role as a series regular in ''Series/GraceAndFrankie'', where she received far more acclaim.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/JeremyRenner was originally set to star, but dropped out.
