----
* In ''SEED'' Episode 40, during the HeroicSacrifice of Uzumi Athha, who tells his little girl Cagalli that although she was adopted, he was so glad to have been her father before spiriting her off to freedom, Fiction Junction's ''Chariot of Dawn'' acting as a heartbreaking funeral march did '''not''' help to stop the tears from pouring down. Damn you [[Creator/YukaNanri Yuuka]] for your beautiful singing voice!
* Also in ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED Gundam SEED]]'', there are the nearly-simultaneous {{Heroic Sacrifice}}s of Mu La Flaga and Natarle Badgiruel in phase 49.
** Murrue's reaction to Mu's apparent death is heartbreaking. After seeing the Strike blow up from tanking the ''Dominion's'' Lohengrin, she slowly breaks down crying before mournfully screaming his name.
*** To twist the knife even further, when Murrue screams, the camera pans out to the Strike's wreckage, amongst which (at least before the HD Remaster edited it out) Mu's helmet can be seen floating.
* She may have been the most controversal character on the show, but Flay Allster, especially after her soul apologizes to Kira and promises to watch over him from them on.
** Another heartbreaking scene with Flay, much earlier in the series: (crying): "Bring daddy back!"
*** Episode 17 (16 in the Remaster) has Flay's manipulations rear their ugly head with a confrontation between her, Sai, and Kira. Sai knows she's been latching onto Kira, all the while Flay is rebuffing him like he's an insect, and at this point, Kira's issues have made him grab the JerkassBall and even armlock Sai when the latter gets physical. Sai then proceeds to vainly try to get the Strike to move out of sheer envy of Kira. Earlier in the episode, Tolle and Miriallia are discussing that they can tell Flay has been acting even weirder than before (and that's saying something) and [[TemptingFate they hope things don't get ugly]] It's became awfully clear how Flay's madness and manipulations have made her such a toxic presence to her fellow Heliopolis refugees, causing them unnecessary conflict and drama when the crew really do not need this. Not hard to see why many viewers [[TheScrappy found it extremely difficult to sympathize with her]], even when she wised up later on.
** And her talk with Natarle, where she cries and tells her how sorry she is for how badly she treated Kira... *SOB*
*** Speaking of Natarle and Kira, when they along with Cagalli and the Desert Dawn stake out Waltfeld's controlled town, Natarle tries to wish Kira luck, both flubbing her cover (to the exasperation of the crewman with them) and just trying to be cordial with him, only for him to respond with a cold glare from behind, and we know why he's not receptive. Remember, she just vouched for his court martial and potential execution not 9 episodes prior for letting Lacus go, and then scoffed that he was let off with only a stern warning. That would certainly kill any sense of camaraderie on Kira's part. And like with the other Creator/HoukoKuwashima voiced presence in Kira's life before his fateful duel with Athrun, he never gets to reconciles with her either.
** It's [[ViewersAreGeniuses incredibly subtle]], but Flay's rant when she and Kira break up. She asks how he can feel sorry for her, when he's the one suffering, the one who does everything he can to protect his friends and suffers when he can't. At first glance, it seems like she's mocking him, but then it hits you: Flay's been manipulating him, and [[BecomingTheMask slowly falling in love with him in the process]]. Thinking Kira pities her [[DontYouDarePityMe throws her own actions into sharp relief]], and the guilt is ''destroying her.'' Knowing this lends a new, heartbreaking quality to her last line "So how... how could [[MessianicArchetype you]] [[SympathyForTheDevil feel sympathy for]] ''[[TheFakeCutie someone like me?]]''"
*** Kira's response: "Maybe this was all a mistake." His girlfriend is breaking down in front of him, and he's too emotionally drained to deal with it. Highlights how badly ''both'' their lives suck. Made even worse when Kira refuses to see his parents, noting that, "all they'd see is a soldier" and that he'd have to ask "why the hell they made me a Coordinator."
----> "This is what I do: I pilot a mobile suit, and when I'm not fighting, I help other people build mobile suits. Why? Because I can."
** Which is HarsherInHindsight when he finds out that they weren't the ones who made him a Coordinator. They're actually his maternal aunt and uncle, who took him in after he was given to them by his real mother, who took him and Cagalli away from their MadScientist of a father, the one who made Kira the Ultimate Coordinator. For that matter, it's this revelation by [[BigBad Rau Le Creuset]] that drops Kira to his biggest emotional breaking point, the last in a long list of him being dehumanized for his status as a Coordinator. As he starts to have an IAmAMonster upon learning of his controversial origins, it's really only Lacus' comforting presence, words, and love that keep him from fully buying into that mindset, but the universe really just keeps finding ways of putting this poor kid through the wringer.
** Perhaps one of the biggest reasons for why Flay's death was more tragic than she deserved was not just because she truly regretted her actions and behavior in the series, but because, in the end, she was never able to properly make amends with Kira or Sai, or anyone else, which is what she desperately wanted to do now. And, if that weren't enough, according to WordOfGod, Flay's spirit never actually appeared to Kira, meaning while we got to hear what Flay wanted to tell Kira, he never did. It's somewhat better, however, knowing that Kira still forgave and loved her regardless of her never being able to make things up to him. He's just that kind of guy.
** The saddest part is if Flay had caught up with Mu just a few minutes earlier she would have made it with him back to the Archangel reunited with Kira and Sai and worked out their issues and gone on to be a happy member of group for the rest of Seed and into Destiny and possibly changed Kira's mentality for the better in both. Instead her fate was sealed the instant she was taken by Rau.
* Nicol's death. Made worse when you realize that the episodes leading up to it foreshadowed it to high heaven.
** Followed by Tolle's death by Athrun throwing his Aegis's shield into his [[CoolPlane Skygrasper]]. My God, ''poor'' Miriallia... *sob*
** And the scene that follows ''that'': Kira and Athrun beat each other down in what is probably one of the most brutal Gundam fights ever animated. All while sad music is playing. Here are two best friends, who still care for each other after all these years... and they're trying as hard as they can to ''kill'' one another, both out of rage at the loss of their comrades, and out of a feeling of sheer futility in trying to deny that they are enemies now.
--->'''Kira:''' '''''AAATHRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNN!!!!!!'''''\
'''Athrun:''' '''''KIIIIRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!'''''
** Minor one when Kira returns to the ship after destroying the Blitz. He responds to the cheers he gets with a wail that he killed someone. On the surface, this seems weird given that he's angsted about killing previously, so why does this one bother him the most? Because he heard Athrun scream Nicol's name. ''He knows he just killed a close comrade of Athrun's and now most likely will have Athrun truly hate him''. The worst part is, he can't articulate this to the confused hangar crew or Mu because he can't reveal that he knows the Aegis' pilot. His friends already know, but what would anyone else do if they knew? Even worse, this happens right after Cagalli has to stay behind, so he's missing his only confidante at the time about Athrun who could help him.
* There is a short scene in one of the last episodes, showing the inside of a hangar full of damaged Strike Daggers and an Earth Alliance pilot holding another one in his arms, screaming for a medic. We then see the face of the carried pilot who has blank eyes, either an indication of being dead or in coma.
* [[http://youtu.be/FUPOUMtpk-M Find the Way]], the final ED for the series, is most certainly Tear Jerking Music. Both the song itself and the imagery of the credits screen really tugs at you.
** The saddest part in both this ED which would also carry into several for the sequel is it's depiction of everyone being together and happy including the characters that have died and even the ones that were never friendly to the protagonists in the first place.
* Cagalli breaks down crying in Kira's arms after the death of her father.
* Another small moment is the sinking of ''Vesalius'', with Captain Ades saluting Athrun, Dearka, and Yzak as fire engulfs the bridge.
* Early in the show there is the MutualKill of EA Admiral Lewis Hallberton and ZAFT Captain Zellman, with each man sacrificing himself for the future of his side. Ramius and Nicol's near simultaneous SayMyName moments ("Admiral Halberton!" "Captain Zellman!") drive it home.
** From that same episode, Yzak shooting down a shuttle full of civilians. On that shuttle was a sweet little girl who had made a piece of origami for Kira. Kira's breakdown in the following episode when he sees the origami and remembers what happened was even worse.
* Kira and Athrun's reunion after the battle of JOSH-A is a textbook example of how much can be said without saying anything: happiness at seeing one's BestFriend, remorse for having hurt him and his friends, silent plea for forgiveness and acceptance--it's all there, unspoken. And then Cagalli crashes the moment and cries for all three of them...
* While a supporting character, Siegel Clyne's death is tragic in its own right. The man dedicated his life to transforming the [=PLANTs=] into a self-sufficient and independent country, only to watch as radicals on both sides of the war eroded his hopes for peaceful coexistence between Naturals and Coordinators before being undermined, betrayed, and murdered by Patrick Zala, his fellow nation-builder and supposed friend. Moreover, since he and Lacus had gone into hiding separately, one must wonder if his final thoughts were of his daughter's safety.
** Speaking of Lacus, seeing her break down in Kira's arms after telling him of her father's death is heartbreaking to watch, especially since this is almost certainly the first time she's allowed herself to grieve for him after learning of his death.
