* You've finally done it, you've invaded the dread citadel Naxxramas, slain all the bosses and looted all there was to loot. But the game still gets the final YouBastard in before you leave: [[http://i.imgur.com/6pRAyGv.jpg You've invaded an old man's home, and beat up him and his cat.]] Happy now?
* If Vaelastrasz the Corrupt manages to defeat you, linger a little at the defeat screen, and you can hear him lament having succumbed to the corruption.
--> ''"Forgive me friend... I have failed."''
* General Drakkisath is sad, confused, and scared during his battle with the player, having thought of them as a helpful ally before, and now forced to fight them or die.
--> ''"Why? Please tell me why? I liked you!"''
* Whenever you have to [[WouldHurtAChild crush a Murloc Tinyfin]], which is a [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter ridiculously cute baby Murloc]].
* Whenever you kill the more "civilian" minions, their death cries are more sad than anything else.
--> '''Refreshment Vendor''': ''"But I have... more... cakes...!"''
--> '''Tournament Attendee''': ''"But... my popcorn..."''
* Rhonin's Deathrattle cry is pretty sad because it mirrors his HeroicSacrifice in the bombing of Theramore. But the reward (3 Arcane Missiles to your hand) would easily win the game for the Mage player (whose default hero is Jaina Proudmore - the person he originally saved from the bombing).
--> '''Ronin''': ''"Save... yourself."''
* Poor Southsea Squidface, seems he has been bullied a lot.
-->'''Southsea Squidface:''' ''(Summoning)'' My mother does love this face.
-->'''Southsea Squidface:''' ''(Attacking)'' Show Respect!
* The Death Knight Card Flavour texts are ''not'' the standard cavalcade of funny - the KnightOfCerebus status of the Death Knights is played absolutely straight - many of them having crossed the DespairEventHorizon after their deaths.
* [[HopeSpot Tirion Fordring arriving just 1 turn too late to save Jaina from being defeated and turned into the Lich King's servant]] in the Prologue of the Knights of the Frozen Throne. The worst part is that it's a HopelessBossFight, so no matter what she (and the players) does, they will not succeed. This make his IKnowYouAreInThereSomewhereFight against her as Frost Lich Jaina all the more heartbreaking.
* The Dalaran Heist mode is mostly lighthearted and campy with one exception: The battle against Kalecgos. Out of all the encounters, he's the only one that treats your destructive rampage as the serious, life-threatening crime it is, and the harsh WhatTheHellHero speech he gives to you during the first few turns of the battle may be jarring enough to make you regret the entire playthrough.
--> '''Archmage Kalec (Turn 1)''': You don't understand the consequences of your actions.\
'''Archmage Kalec (Turn 2)''': Dalaran is not a toy to steal. People's lives are at stake.\
'''Archmage Kalec (Turn 3)''' Dalaran could have been your home too.
* The card Ring Toss depicts [[https://hearthstone.gamepedia.com/Ring_Toss a very happy turtle]]. However, play a card that costs 5 or more mana (which you almost certainly will have to if you want maximum value) and you'll corrupt him into [[https://hearthstone.gamepedia.com/Ring_Toss_(Corrupted) this monstrosity.]] At least he still seems happy...
* The Book of Heroes recounts pivotal moments of the original usable heroes in Hearthstone, and not all of them are awe-inspiring or heartwarming. Highlights include:
** Jaina unable to stop her father from attacking the Horde, knowing that the battle will cost her either her father or her friend in Thrall. After witnessing the destruction of Theramore, she nearly loses herself to hatred for the Horde, comes close to killing Thrall as a result, and loses all hope of peace between the factions.
** Uther, the first of the paladins, ends up slain by Arthas, the prince who he swore to protect and raise.
--> '''Uther''': "I would have done ''anything'' for you! ''Given my life, even!''"
--> '''Arthas''': "You still might..."
** Gul'dan and his origin story, cementing his status as [[WoobieDestroyerofWorlds Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds]] as he goes from rejection by his clan, to manipulation by Kiljaeden and Sargeras in his misguided search for power, only to realize that he's always been nothing more than a pawn.
* Unlike the other adventurers featured in the Book of Mercenaries, especially after the heartwarming romp with the preceding mercenary [[GentleGiant Guff]] [[KindheartedSimpleton Runetotem]], there's not a lot to be happy about in the story of Kurtrus Ashfallen.
** How does Kurtrus' adventure begin? Waking up from a nightmare, watching his family slain by demons.
** Early on his adventure, Kurtrus ends up pursued by Aranna Starseeker, who's under orders to bring him back to Illidan. Despite both deeply respecting each other as accomplished illidari and neither bearing a grudge, both of them are bound to their mission and are thus forced to fight. Defeating Aranna prompts her to sadly wish Kurtrus the best on his journey after he reaffirms that he's not going back with her.
** Kurtrus and Cariel Roame end up briefly joining with Xyrella's team, bringing them into an encounter with Kazakus and Varden Dawngrasp. As soon as Dawngrasp realizes that Xyrella needs her naaru shard to save her daughter's life, they try to coax Kazakus out of attacking, but ends up forced to cover Kazakus' retreat. The group defeats Dawngrasp, and Xyrella's group promises to bring Dawngrasp to Stormwind and answer for Kazakus' crimes.
** Cariel, Kurtrus' stalwart ally through his adventure, is on a search for her sister Tamsin - but the reunion very quickly turns tragic. Even after Kurtrus proves that Tamsin is seeking to summon the demon that slew his family, Cariel refuses to stand down and begs Kurtrus not to come between them. Kurtrus is then forced to defeat Cariel as she shields her sister, to which Tamsin simply admits she was watching to see who would go down fighting first, and declares that Cariel has always been a fool, much to Kurtrus' disgust.
** Upon Tamsin's defeat, she promptly [[IShallTauntYou taunts Kurtrus]] and [[VillainExitStageLeft escapes via portal]]. There's no victory fanfare, [[UncertainDoom no news whether Cariel survived the fight]], just Kurtrus screaming in anguish after Tamsin after he and his closest ally failed their personal missions in [[TheBadGuyWins the worst way possible…]]
* Given Tamsin Roame's backstory, her homecoming chapter in the Book of Mercenaries has plenty of somber moments.
** Tamsin's motivation? After Scholomance Academy was destroyed by the Scourge and she was raised, Tamsin decided that she'd simply been betrayed by her family and left to die.
** Tamsin's friends finally realize the truth behind her motivations as she turns against them, and they opt to defend Stormwind against her attack. Bru'kan admits he's always seen through Tamsin's lies and begs Tamsin not to hurt the citizens of Stormwind, Rokara beats herself up over not recognizing Tamsin's true nature, and Guff is absolutely dismayed that Tamsin hurt their friends. Even Tamsin can't bring herself to hate Guff as she apologizes to her "little funnel cake".
--> '''Guff''': "Tamsin! You... hurt me...!"
** Coming across Xyrella, Tamsin corrupts the naaru shard she has on hand purely to mess with the draenei. While Xyrella ends up embracing the shadow power, she remains fervent in her mission to save her daughter and stop Tamsin - not that it stops Tamsin from defeating her anyway. The "HOW?!" Xyrella screams out is absolutely piteous.
** With Stormwind laid to waste by Anetheron's invasion, only Tamsin's father Cornelius stands in her way, gravely disappointed in what his daughter has become... and the gimmick of the fight is laid clear. Because Cornelius can't be damaged by minions, you have to use unique Mind Demon minions and other Warlock cards to mill him to death. Ingame, this is represented by Tamsin using the mind demons to ''destroy her father's memories and turn him into a monster'', with poor Cornelius losing his sanity from every count of fatigue damage and screaming for Tamsin to stop.
** "Cariel. My dear little sister. Come to the cemetery. I'll be waiting..."
* Cariel's story, unsurprisingly, brings the tragedy of the Roame family to a close.
** Cornelius Roame makes it clear that Tamsin was always the favorite child, as proven in a memory when Cariel comes very close to defeating Tamsin in sparring. Despite Tamsin failing to take Cariel's health to 0 with a last-ditch fire blast, Cornelius declares Tamsin the winner.
** Roused awake by Kurtrus after he knocked her out and Tamsin's escape in the previous chapters, Kurtrus turns his anger towards her for robbing him of his vengeance. Out of rage, he denies Cariel's suggestion to team up again or ask Aranna and Illidan for help. He does get better afterwards when Cariel rescues him from Anetheron, and genuinely apologizes to Cariel for abandoning her side, but for a moment he truly believes he is beyond redemption.
** What's Cornelius' first response when Cariel returns to Stormwind? He holds her responsible for abandoning her post at Northwatch.
** Cariel follows Tamsin's trail to the cemetery, where she's greeted by the hulking abomination that Tamsin has reduced Cornelius to. In his addled state, Cornelius initially mistakes Cariel for Tamsin, then promptly attacks when he realizes she's not Tamsin. Cariel is forced to put Cornelius out of his misery, begging him for forgiveness as Cornelius declares he's finally free, and Cariel decides that her sister is truly beyond saving.
** While Tamsin mocks Cariel for becoming "boring" after signing up with the army, Cariel recalls that after their mother's death and Tamsin's disappearance, Cornelius fell into sorrow, prompting Cariel to be the "good daughter" for once. Tamsin dismisses this as another attempt by Cariel to heap the blame on her again.
** When Cariel insists that she's not out for revenge, but justice, Tamsin goes into a brief rant on how she was left for dead when Scholomance was laid waste by the Scourge.
** Tamsin is finally slain by Cariel's hand. For a moment, through her stalwart dedication and sense of justice, Cariel's voice breaks as she apologizes to her sister.
* After Tamsin is resurrected again as a lich, Bru'kan's chapter concludes with him taking out Tamsin at the cost of his life, as both Bru'kan and Tamsin are nowhere to be seen after their final attack. Cariel reads him a solemn eulogy at the end of his chapter, which carries over to the start of Dawngrasp's chapter. Rokara in particular does ''not'' take Bru'kan's demise well and briefly lashes out at Cariel for not doing all she could to save him.
* During the raid on Onyxia's lair, Cariel admits that she still sees Tamsin whenever she closes her eyes and finds her convictions shaken. In a cross with Heartwarming, Kurtrus declares that as she has helped free him from the demons of his past, he will do the same for her.
* The final battle in the Mercenaries' story has Dawngrasp and Xyrella face the corrupted naaru Mi'da, having been taken over by void energy and forced to summon various bosses representing the Mercenaries' encounters, while moaning in deep pain and lamentation of all that took place. Notably, upon summoning Tamsin, Mi'da suggests that deep down Tamsin still had some good in her, however small.
* Though purified, Mi'da passes away from the strain on its body, but not before it uses the last of its power to heal Xyrella's daughter.
