1	* Given the nature of both the film and the books, how hard any potential TearJerker moment hits is highly subjective. One of the strongest is the story told to Francis by the lynx in the second book, and the [[LastOfHisKind sad]] [[WalkingTheEarth fate]] he's resigned himself to.
2	* As if it weren't obvious by the time Francis finds the first murdered cat in his backyard, this book is an animal lover's worst nightmare.
3	* Poor Felicity. In the book the owner is sitting there crying after seeing what happened.
4	* The Queen cat, Solitaire, who was gutted while pregnant because Pascal only wants certain cats to breed. Kong's reaction is also incredibly sad.
5	* Dear God, Bluebeard's murder. And to make it worse, it was his so-called friend Pascal that offed him.
6	** Though in Bluebeard's favor, it's sort of implied he survived in the film.
7	* "He lost his innocence...as humans have lost theirs."
8	* Anyone who's seen or works in animal testing knows that it does get incredibly cruel and is sometimes just to satisfy some awful curiosity or debunked theory or treatment. It's also true that cats are included in the species of animals that are tested on. It's no wonder Pascal/Claudandus was so far gone. And what's worse, the scientist's horrible testing barely amounted to anything and it wasn't even widely utilized. Everyone had left him and hundreds of animals suffered for nothing. When funding ran out he began taking strays to experiment on, and probably some he thought were strays but were really house pets.
9	** One must shed at least a few tears for Julius Preterius - at least in the novel. He genuinely thought his ideas were revolutionary and started off wanting to contribute something good to the world, but failure after failure sent him down a spiral of paranoia, alcoholism and finally insanity. His diary entries include many drunken ramblings aimed at his wife, who he no doubt loved very much and had to watch his descent into madness from afar, unable to help him. And then he was brutally killed by one of his own test subjects.
10	* Pascal/Claudandus's last words, no matter the version. His last moments are a dying acknowledgement of the evil that has shaped him and that he, in turn, has committed, only now it's too late for him to do anything about any of it.
11	** In the English version of the movie.
12	---> "The horror, so much pain, darkness. Francis...so much...darkness. You look at me now and all you see, Francis...is evil...yet once I was...good."
13	** In the book:
14	--->"So much darkness in the world....so much darkness, Francis. No light. Only darkness. And there is always someone who will take it upon himself. Always. Always. Always. I have become evil, but once I, too, was good...."
