If there's one thing Creator/{{Disney}} is notorious for, it's for being good at getting viewers to cry but even then, ''Bolt'' is considered one of their most tearjerking movies yet.
* Near the beginning of the film, Penny takes Bolt back to their trailer after another successful shoot. While she's relaxed and happy, insisting that all the bad guys are gone and she’s okay, Bolt is completely on edge after the chase scene they've just filmed and spends the whole time guarding the door. Penny's concerned but clearly unsurprised reaction makes it obvious this is a regular occurrence.
** The walls of the trailer are covered in photographs that Penny has taken of herself and Bolt after every day's shoot. Bolt isn't smiling in any of them.
** When Bolt refuses to eat, and won't play with Penny when she calls to him, her last resort is to pull out Mr. Carrot. Hearing the familiar squeak of his favorite toy briefly snaps Bolt out of his paranoia, but he quickly regains his composure and remains fixated on the door. As a stark contrast to how happily he played with it when he was a puppy, it just goes to show how much the constant danger - which isn’t even real - has emotionally damaged Bolt and made him forget how to act and live like a real dog.
* When Mittens finally lets her past slip.
--> "No. No, Bolt. That's what [[HumansAreBastards they]] do, okay? They act like they love you. They act like they'll be there forever. And then one day they pack up all their stuff and move away and ''take'' their ''love'' with them, and leave their declawed cat behind to ''fend for herself!''"
--> [[StunnedSilence ''shocked silence'']]
--> "They ''leave'' her. Wondering... what she did ''wrong''."
** Anyone who has worked in an animal shelter should start bawling about now.
** There's a FridgeHorror / FridgeSadness element to this, as well: Cats are often lost ''accidentally'' during a move, whether it's due to the cat freaking out at all the upheaval, or just due to people running out of time to look for their wayward outdoor cat. So it's entirely possible that Mittens' family ''did'' love her very much and are just as heart-broken as she is at their separation, and she'll never know.
*** [[SarcasmMode Oh, but it gets better!]] Many pet owners are unaware at how declawing an animal isn't just painful, but makes it impossible for them to defend themselves. If we're to assume that this is what happened, it's the equivalent of accidentally blinding someone, then leaving without telling them. In fact, many veterinarians refuse to do this procedure, believing it's too cruel. It's even become illegal in some jurisdictions.
* The moment where Bolt finally realizes he isn't a super dog: he thinks he was able to escape from the pound trunk, only to learn it was Rhino who helped him out. Then he sees his "birthmark", which is really makeup, is beginning to smudge. The sad look he has when he rubs the makeup and sees it start coming off is just soul-crushing, as his world comes crashing down around him.
* Bolt and Penny finding a way out of the burning building, only to discover that the vent is big enough for him, but not her. And there's no way Bolt [[UndyingLoyalty is going to leave her behind]]. The look on poor Bolt's face when he thinks his beloved owner is at death's door with no way out...
-->"You're my good boy. [[PlatonicDeclarationOfLove I love you]]."
** What follows this scene is Penny's mom asking in fear if anyone found her daughter, with none of the crew being able to help her. If you're a parent, this part will shake you to your core.
--->'''Penny's mom''': ''(frantically)'' Have you seen my daughter? ''Has anyone seen my baby?''
* Having finally accepted the world as he knew it was a lie, Bolt continues holding on to the one true thing he has left - the love of his person - only for the first thing he sees after reaching the studio to be Penny in rehearsal, hugging the [[TheOtherDarrin studio's replacement Bolt]]. And he leaves just before he can see [[OutOfContextEavesdropping just how miserable she is without him]].
* A TearsOfJoy variation: Penny, stretched out on a gurney and nearly passed out from being trapped in a fire, sees her nearly-unconscious dog wagging his tail as they're loaded into the ambulance.
* Penny hearing and embracing Bolt's replacement. Her euphoria over being reunited with her good boy immediately dashed out the second she sees the trainer call him to her.
* Really, any scene in which Bolt whimpers or shows sadness is heartbreaking, especially for people who have beloved pets of their own.
