* The first seven chapters show how Shoya's bullying went too far and then got turned on him to the extent that he was DrivenToSuicide, showcasing in full effect how KidsAreCruel.
** The movie makes this incredibly clear, harsh and heartbreaking with Shoya repeatedly stealing or damaging Shoko's hearing aids and mocking them with his classmates; it's taken to an unexpectedly low and cruel point where he wrenches one from her ear so forcefully Shoko starts to ''bleed''. It's also another instance in the future in which Shoya's scapegoat status is made abundantly clear, as Ueno ''still'' takes, mocks, and steals Shoko's hearing aid, showing she's learned nothing.
** The scene following Shoko actually fighting back and beating up Shouya badly. It cuts to Shouya in bed for an angry nap, as his mother comes in angrily confronting him. Turns out the school called her about Shouya damaging several million yen's worth of Shoko's hearing aids, and her mother is demanding compensation, as well as [[MamaBear answers about who was injuring her daughter]]. Shouya's mother has to take out a loan and bows in apology to Shoko's mother when handing her the money, while Shouya watches, the HeelRealization growing.
** If you pay attention, you see that his mother's ear is bleeding so hard it's dripping on her clothes, implying there was a scuffle (and there likely ''was'', since Shoko's mom refers to her as a bad seed like him). It adds an extra layer of sadness to the scene, where you can just feel Shouya blaming himself for his mother getting hurt.
* Shouya isn't just suicidal because of the realization about what he did to Shoko, or the subsequent bullying his way. He also realized that his actions caused his mother to end up badly in debt, to the point where he has to earn back the money since she can't as a hairstylist. He thinks that if he pays off the money and kills himself, then he won't be a burden on her anymore. Shouya's mother quickly dispels that thinking; she yells at him after finding out that his ''life'' is worth more than any debt, and makes him swear not to kill himself.
* Yuzuru is very harsh and cold to Shouya, blocking him physically when he tries to talk to her big sister, framing him for jumping off a bridge and lying that she is Shoko's boyfriend. But then, who is the one that heard Shoko saying that she wanted to die? Yuzuru, who heard her sister spell it out in sign language after another day of bullying. You can't blame Yuzuru for going BigSisterInstinct because she's seen the worst of how one person can ruin another's mental illness. [[spoiler:On the plus side, it doesn't take Yuzuru long to realize Shouya's CharacterDevelopment, and she even becomes a ShipperOnDeck for him and Shoko.]]
* Thanks to SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome, Shouya gave Shoko PTSD with the bullying, as did the rest of the class. You can see it when she runs away from him after seeing him for the first time in a few years when she ends up in a TroubledFetalPosition. While it's implied she gets better after Shouya saves her life, it's still a HardTruthAesop that you can cause irreversible damage to someone with your thoughtlessness.
* When Shoko learns that Yuzuru put up the photos that got Shoya suspended from school, she demands Yuzuru go apologize to him--or failing that, her coming with Shoko to apologize. One sign she does makes Yuzuru break down in tears--while Shoko was angrily signing that she can apologize without Yuzuru's help, the somewhat sloppy way she does this unintentionally makes her sign that she would ''get rid of her''[[note]]she signs "I don't need you", but the sign for "don't need" and the sign for "throw away" are similar if you go too fast[[/note]]. With how protective she is of her older sister, it's no wonder why Yuzuru was hurt.
* Chapter 51 is one long tear jerker. First we see Shoko's tear soaked face after Shoya fell off her balcony. Then there's her ImagineSpot where her elementary school days were happy, including her getting along with her classmates, her mom being happy, her dad being present in her life. This ends with an image of her lying in bed sobbing. Then there's the vision she has of Shoya, where he says farewell to her, causing Shoko to run out of her apartment late at night.
* Nishimiya's LoveConfession to Ishida. Feeling self-conscious by Ueno's reappearance in their lives, Nishimiya changes her hairstyle and refuses to sign to Ishida, instead insisting on saying her confession out loud. However, due to her SpeechImpediment, Ishida thinks she's talking about the moon instead. Nishimiya looks on the verge of tears as she realize that he didn't understand her confession at all. The next chapter shows that Nishimiya did end up crying when she got home, as well as lying in bed and kicking her feet in frustration, over the fact that the person she cares about most not understanding her.
* The death of Yuzuru and Shoko's grandmother. She was the only person that Yuzuru related to the most, and despite putting on a strong appearance she can't help but cry.
* Shoko's declaration of self loathing to Ueno on the Ferris Wheel. And this is after Ueno straight-up told Shoko that she hates her as well.
* Chapter 32 shows just what happened to Yuzuru and Shoko's father. He abandoned both Shoko and her mother once his parents found out about it because they didn't want a disabled child in their family. That left the mother working to support both of them while her grandmother helped take care of them.
* Chapter 39 has Kawai telling everyone that Ishida bullied Nishimiya in the past just to get a reaction. It leads to fighting among the group and splitting them all up. This eventually leads to Shoko trying to kill herself, believing that nothing good comes from being around her and Ishida falling in her place after trying to save her.
* How quiet Shoko's attempted suicide is in the film, apart from Shouya desperately calling for her as she climbs over the balcony railing. She can't hear him because her hearing aids are off, and even with them, it'd be unlikely. Shouya trips over the furniture in the apartment before running like hell to catch her before she falls. He then orders her to bring her arms up so he can get her to safety.
* As Shouya is falling, he sees that there is a scar on Shoko's ear, from when he pulled out her earring aids. His last thoughts before he falls unconscious is he hopes he gets the chance to apologize for that.
* The scene where the film critic eviscerates the movie they made. It's just so heart-breaking to see Nagatsuka brought to tears over it. Especially since they decided to make the movie for Shoya after he ended up in a coma.
** Amongst the criticisms brought against the movie, he ridicules the main character's thick eye brows, which Mashiba had been bullied for in the past. Unlike the rest of his friends besides Nagatsuka, who react in disgust or anger, Mashiba just shrinks and utters "I'm sorry, everybody".
** Another criticism was the movie being silent with subtitles, which the critic scoffed as a lame attempt to be "artsy" or "deep," when the real reason Nagatsuka made it that way was so deaf people could follow it, particularly Shoko.
* The scene where Yuzuru tearfully explains why she put pictures of death up in her room: to show Shoko what death is like in the hopes that she'll be put off wanting to kill herself because she doesn't know what else to do. It didn't work.
** Yuzuru then takes the photos down from the wall, feeling that they're useless now. She finally forgives her mother, after ''years'', when the latter helps her dismantle the collage.
* In Chapter 52 when Shoko tries to find Shoya in the middle of the night running to their meeting place. She's frantically searching for him and when he's not there she's in tears, bawling her eyes out. She has a dream sequence about Shoya and during it she understands him perfectly, but she can't say a thing when he tells her that she's way happier without him. You can see her struggling to get her words out, but can't. It's one whole chapter that piles on the tears and despair Shoko feels when she finally realizes that he's the most important person to her and without him, she's so lost and heartbroken.
* Nearly everyone's treatment of Shoko after her attempted suicide. She is offered no help, called stupid by Yuzuru, and the only ones to stick up for her are her mother and Shoya's mother. On top of this, only Shoya, out of the entire group, apologizes to Shoko for bullying her. Ueno blames ''Shoko'' for the bullying (and the introversion Shoko naturally formed as a result) and tries to destroy her new friendship with Shoya and Kawai plays down her role in it and even slaps Shoko. And Shoko's still big enough to try and make friends with them.
* Chapter 43, where Ishida makes a HeroicSacrifice to prevent Nishimiya from committing suicide, builds effectively towards its dramatic conclusion, as Ishida runs through all the things he's done, and whether or not they are truly reflective of [[TheAtoner atonement]] or are just aspects of his selfishness. And he resolves, if he gets the chance, to truly make an effort to do what's right by everyone. And as he falls due to the effort it took to save Nishimiya, he sees her crying in utter anguish and terror as he falls away, and he realizes that he may just be falling to his death. It's even worse for the reader, who knows that the look on Nishimiya's face is the look of someone who's watching the person they love fall to what might be their death.
