12	* The photon sword in the ''Phantom Bullet'' arc is clearly intended as a ''Franchise/StarWars'' Shout Out, and Kirito is inspired to cut bullets thanks to seeing Jedi deflecting blaster bolts, though if he had read anything from said franchise's [[Franchise/StarWarsLegends expanded universe]] he probably wouldn't have tried.[[note]]In the franchise that's being referenced, "slugthrowers" (as conventional firearms were called) were a good choice for bounty hunters and mercenaries facing off against Jedi, to prevent the Jedi tactic of deflecting blaster fire back at their opponent. Moreso, attempting to block a lead slug with a LaserBlade would only result in the wielder getting a faceful of molten lead, as it is highly unlikely that the blade would instantly vaporize the slug, and even if it did, the ensuing blast of searing vapor wouldn't be significantly more pleasant than the molten lead. In fact, in the Expanded Universe, more than one Jedi has been on the receiving end of one of the few remaining advantages of slugthrowers.[[/note]] The small droid that brings the item to him could also be a shout out to R2-D2 from the same series. In the anime, the photon sword even uses the same sound effects as a lightsaber. In the light novel, Sinon even points out that some call the "lightsabers" by name.
