''Ultraseven'' (sometimes ''Ultra Seven'' or ''Ultra-7''), the third entry in the ''Franchise/UltraSeries'', is more serious, had very sophisticated writing and plotting, and its style is purely Science Fiction, as opposed to [[Series/{{Ultraman}} its kid-friendlier predecessor]]. Ultra Seven is an iconic character, in fact so successful that he (and actor Kouji Moritsugu, who played Dan Moroboshi) has appeared in many subsequent shows and movies, even starring in ''Series/UltramanLeo'' seven (no pun intended) years later. Decades later, Seven receives a SpinOffspring, ''Franchise/UltramanZero''.

Stationary Post Observer (or Agent) #340 from the M78 Nebula was surveying the Milky Way one time. He flew down to planet Earth when he saw a selfless mountain climber named Jiro Satsuma do a HeroicSacrifice to [[CutTheSafetyRope save his friend on a mountain climbing journey]] (Think the movie ''Film/VerticalLimit''). Agent 340 rescued Satsuma in the nick of time, and was so moved by the man's courage that he decided to stay on our planet and patterned his human identity on Satsuma's, going by the name Dan Moroboshi. People would come to know him as Ultra Seven, champion of Earth against alien attacks.

The show received an American dub, a co-production of Turner Program Services[[note]]the syndication arm of Turner Broadcasting, which also distributed ''Series/{{Starcade}}'', ''Series/TheWonderYears'' and (post-1991) Creator/HannaBarbera series; it was eventually absorbed into [[Creator/{{Lorimar}} Telepictures Distribution]] in 1996 and in turn into Creator/WarnerBros Television Distribution in 2003[[/note]] and Canadian studio Creator/{{Cinar}}[[note]]rebranded as Creator/CookieJarEntertainment in 2004 following a brief shutdown; acquired by Creator/DHXMedia in 2012[[/note]] in 1985; however, for various reasons, the episodes weren't shown until the mid-90s, when Creator/{{TNT}} dusted them off. The series also received two sequels: ''Series/HeiseiUltraseven'', an AlternateUniverse sequel series following Ultraseven resuming his duties as the only Ultra to have visited Earth, and ''Series/UltrasevenX'', a DarkerAndEdgier reimagining that takes place in a {{Cyberpunk}} world.

!!''Ultra Seven'' provides examples of the following tropes:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder: A to C]]
* AbnormalAmmo: To destroy robot kaijuu Crazygon, Seven [[spoiler:shrank down to about an inch high, ran into the barrel of Ultra Garrison officer Furuhashi's BFG, then flew out the business end when Furuhashi fired the next shot]].
* ADayInTheLimelight: Each Ultra Garrison member gets one. So does [[SixthRanger Kurata]].
* ActorAllusion: In "The Brave One", Furuhashi shot Crazygon with the Electro H Gun, combined with a shrunken [=UltraSeven=] acting as AbnormalAmmo. In ''Series/{{Ultraman}}'', Arashi shot Keylla with the Spider S80, and the same prop was used both times.
* ADeathInTheLimelight: EnsignNewbie[=/=]GloryHound Aoki in "Glory For Whom", Soga's rival Kurota in "The 0.1 second kill".
* AffectionateParody: Uchimurasebun from around 1993, with Kouji Moritsugu as the Captain. Moritsugu played another Captain in ''Ultraman Zearth 2'', itself another parody.
* AgainstTheSettingSun:
** The last part of Episode 12.
** Dan and [[spoiler:Dorothy Andersen's imposter]] in Episode 15, as well as that episode's ending, with Dan running toward the camera.
** The end of Episode 24, over the skies in Hokkaido.
** The end of Episode 38.
* AIIsACrapshoot[=/=]RidiculouslyHumanRobots: "Nightmare On The Fourth Planet". "Android 0 Directive" is a subversion, as Android Zero did as she was told.
* AirJousting: The fights in "The targeted town" and "From another planet with love" were shot at the same time.
** In the former, Seven and Alien Metron run toward each other at high speed, jump (complete with a freeze-frame), land on opposite sides without actually hitting each other, and keep running. Metron flies off, Seven just jumps so he's upside down, fires up the Eye Sluggler, then controls it telekinetikally so that it hits the top of Metron's back, then jumps back to a standing position before finishing him up with the Emerium Beam.
** In the latter, against Alien Spehl.
** Seven tried this against the Guts Aliens, but it was a NoSell.
* AlasPoorVillain: Alien Maya looked like she was about to cry when she realized her people left her on Earth to die.
* AlienAmongUs: Seven took a human form after saving a brave man and decided to stick around.
* AliensAreBastards: 90% of the show's aliens all just want to invade or destroy Earth. Even aliens like the Pedans who play the HumansAreTheRealMonsters card end up revealing that they would rather destroy humanity instead of finding a peaceful solution.
* AllAccordingToPlan:
** Dan already knew about the Ultra Garrison and its members before he ran into Soga and Furuhashi in "The Invisible Challenger"
** How and why the rocket was thrown off course in "Nightmare On The Fourth Planet"
* AlternateContinuity: The Seven movies, video specials, and Ultraseven X are pretty much in their own timeline. More accurately, they ignore the retcon introduced in ''Series/ReturnOfUltraman'' which integrated Ultraseven in the original Ultraman's universe.
* AnatomyArsenal: So to speak,
** The [[PrecisionGuidedBoomerang Eye Slugger]] from the top of his head, by itself, with energy, and combined with telekinesis
** The Emerium Beam lamp from his forehead
** His L-shaped Wide Shot from his right forearm
** His eyes can see invisible aliens
** Knife and shuriken-shaped energy blasts from his hands
** A spiral beam from an outstretched arm
* AndroclesLion: Gorii, once Anne bandages his wounded hand.
* AntiHero: Aoki, and to an extent, Kurata.
* AntiVillain: Numerous aliens are actually terrified of humans trying to destroy their home first. [[spoiler:Alien Annon from episode 16 was talked out of destroying Earth by Seven and went back home. And who knows if those underground robots from 17 were conquerors or merely reacting to several sudden intruders.]] While some actually play up this angle [[spoiler: like the Pittans.]]
* ArtisticTitle: Episodes 1-13 feature an opening logo with scattered paint particles that shake to form the word Ultraseven in Kana; the remaining episodes feature a swirling twin-whirlpool paint effect similar to ''Ultraman''[='=]s opening, the logo appearing in two words, one at the center of each whirlpool, the word Ultra higher and to the left. In all episodes, the logo is followed by the opening credits sequence proper, consisting of silhouettes of Space Station V3, mecha, Dan, and Seven set against a wavy (think lava) multi-color background that changes color as it moves.
** The Creator/{{Cinar}} dub of the series had an AnimatedCreditsOpening, which featured lots of laser effects and an animated Ultraseven flying towards the screen.
* AvengersAssemble: How the team (minus Dan) is introduced. Dan would show up later in the episode.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Amagi, which saved Dan/Seven a few times. Dan, being an alien hero.
* BadassInDistress: Dan in Episode 46
* BadassArmy: The Ultra Garrison
* BadassBystander: Dan in "The Invisible Challenger", Jiro Satsuma in Episode 17, both played by Kohji Moritsugu.
* BadassFamily: In the new Ultra Galaxy movie, Seven's son Zero turned out to be even more powerful than his father.
** Anne, Seven's love interest is pretty good in combat as well.
* {{Bathos}}:
** Windam vs Seven happens in the middle of life-or-death drama involving Furuhashi and his elderly mother.
** Shinichi from "Ambassador from Nonmalt" first runs into Anne as she's at the beach buried in sand up to her neck.
** At the beginning of "The 700 Km Dash", Dan and Anne are watching a movie, with Dan eating a huge snack. There he gets the idea of how to transport the episode's McGuffin.
** A more-mundane-than-silly example In Part I of "The Seven Assassination Plan": After the Guts aliens show the audience what they want to do with Seven, the following scene takes place at an amusement park with lots of young couples and happy music, then Furuhashi and Amagi(?) appear, the former complaining that nothing out of the ordinary is happening. They return to base where Anne reads the letter that came with a package for Furuhashi, all set to romantic music. [[MoodWhiplash Then it's Dan and Anne's turn to patrol]]...
** In Part II of "The Seven Assassination Plan", Furuhashi though it was hilarious that the Guts aliens stole a fake stone from his friend, then remembers that they might be listening. Shhhhh! All the while, Seven was still in mortal danger!
** In "Destroy Epicenter X", the Ultra Garrison were whining like school children who don't want to go to school at the thought of visiting with curmudgeony Professor Iwamura, an expert seismologist who was aiding them in an investigation.
** From "Android Zero Directive": Killer toys that can shoot people down? Children who turn into child soldiers at the stroke of midnight? Yes, and it was all PlayedForDrama.
** Alien Perolinga, perhaps the most ridiculous-looking (and sounding) alien in the show, was behind an imminent alien invasion and was able to make it look like something completely ordinary. And that fight scene!
** In "The Erased Time", Furuhashi had been posted next door to the hotel room of noted scientist Prof.Yushima. When Alien Vira stops time in its tracks to hypnotize Yushima, Furuhashi (who dozed off and fell off his chair) is frozen in mid-fall. As soon as Yushima gets his marching orders, time is restored to normal and Furuhashi hits the floor!
** Just before Seven's Superior's first appearance, Dan was asleep, the only sounds were the ticking of an owl-shaped clock, which also hooted and moved its eyes every second. Previously, Dan had discovered he was losing his strength and powers, and not in the best way.
** In "From Another Planet with Love", two women had died wearing a beautiful watch by the time Anne's friend Sanae got the exact same watch from her boyfriend Saburo. As Anne tried to get answers, Sanae's little brother "borrowed" the watch to show it off at school, taking ill in the middle of a game of softball(?). When Sanae goes to the hospital, little Shin is running around, jumping the bed and being a stinker as if nothing had happened. Later, Saburo ''did'' figure out what happened, unbeknownst to everybody...
** Starbem Gyeron's little "victory dance" at the ruins of what seems like [[spoiler:Urakami Cathedral]] is this or BlackComedy, due to the historical context.
** Furuhashi [[TheSnackIsMoreInteresting being more concerned with drinking Pepsi]] than with the missing Dan and Soga, or for that matter, the titular downtown's changing skyline in "The Vanishing City". Anne snapped him of of it quickly.
* BatmanGambit: The Guts' plan to capture and kill Seven is this; so is the Metron aliens' FlawExploitation of humans; and the Sphehlians' little contest to lure children into a trap to steal their blood (their initial FlawExploitation of young women counts, too).
* BatmanInMyBasement:
** Little Hiroshi hides rock monster Ammon in his house in "The Eye That Sees in the Dark".
** Dan stays in a kid's room when hiding from the Ultra Garrison in the last episode.
* BattleAgainstTheSunset: The iconic duel between Ultraseven and Alien Metron takes place against the setting sun, bathing the fighters and the Kitagawa skyline in an irradiant colorscape.
* BeamOWar: Against Annon, [[spoiler:Windam]], and robot Seven.
* BeastAndBeauty: Anne and Gorii. No, he doesn't get to keep her captive.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Episodes 40, to rescue Seven and 49, to rescue Amagi, among others.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing:
** Saburo, Sanae's boyfiend in "From Another Planet With Love"
** Dr. Niwa from "The Lonely Earthling"
* BittersweetEnding: Series-wise: Pandon and the Ghos aliens are annihilated, yet Seven is weak and is forced to fly home. Meanwhile, all those cities were blown up. Dan's teammates are not sure Seven will survive the trip, they're not even sure Seven ''is'' Dan. [[spoiler: And Dan DidNotGetTheGirl.]]
** Episode-wise: "The Stolen Ultra Eye" (Maya was abandoned on Earth); "Dark Zone" (The Pegassa home world was destroyed and their envoy stranded on Earth, Seven foils his attempt to blow up the planet); "Glory for Whom" (TheScrappy dies); "Envoy From Nonmalto" (maybe the Nonmaltos were telling the truth...); "From Another Planet with Love" (Sanae and Shin survive, the aliens are dead, she tosses the second watch in the water, they (along with Dan and Anne) are hopeful that aliens and Earthlings will one day get along, yet Sanae is visibly shaken by her run-in with her boyfriend, who was one of the bad guys)
* BizarreAlienBiology:
** Gabora (?) from "The Fugitive Fortune Teller" could only be destroyed if the spaceship carrying him was blown up, which he took advantage of by using his [[LosingYourHead disembodied head]] to attack and bite Seven.
** Chibull transformed into a giant brain with eyes and tiny appendages, but only when Android Zero was destroyed.
** Dinosaur Tank combined a living creature with a mecha.
** Iron Rocks was a sentient battleship.
** Petero was a giant cactus-like alien who could fire jets of water from an unusually-placed mouth next to his one eye.
** Annon was an eyeball living in a rock, which took the vague shape of a prehistoric monster.
** The Pole Aliens were all limbs and head, no midsection.
** The Kanan and Pitt Aliens had oversized eyes, like flies.
** The Kappa-like Tepeto Aliens looked just like their folk tale counterpart.
** Both the Godora and Pegassa aliens are insect-like, despite the former being PlantAliens. Pegassas had a head like a hammer shark's.
** Eleking was a cross between an eel and Godzilla.
** Mikuras resembles a bipedal bison.
** Alien Wyar was all [[PlantAliens branches and leaves]]
** Alien Bira looked like a stingray with a lobster's tail.
** Alien Metron looks like an upright fish.
** Guyros is a cross between a starfish and an octopus.
** Alien Wild is [[BigfootSasquatchAndYeti a yeti]]
** Alien Goron is a gorilla with a tail.
* BlatantLies: "Draw a rocket. Get a space watch." Doubles as ExactWords.
* BodyHorror:
** Alien Wyar's habit of turning humans into plants.
** Alien Spehl's welts. The fact that it looks like a mummy makes it scarier.
** Gorii, a human-ape hybrid created by Alien Goron in "The Great Ape Of Terror".
* BondVillainStupidity: The Salome aliens were so proud of their [[EvilKnockoff creation]], they left Dan to die strapped to a table with a bomb about to destroy their base of operations. Dan escaped.
* BottleEpisode: "Showdown at -140º" from the Ultra Garrison's point of view, as they never leave the base until the last five minutes.
* {{Brainwashed}}: Nearly EVERY alien (not all) does this to some unfortunate person in the series, be it a pedestrian, member of the Ultra Garrison, or even Dan himself!
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Furuhashi laughs out loud, then turns to the camera and shushes the audience in Episode 40, after a Guts Alien attacks his racer friend, stealing a McGuffin that happened to be fake.
* CaptureAndReplicate:
** The Wyar aliens from "The Green Terror" capture their victims in a big metal rock, and send duplicates out which are controlled from transmitters hidden in smaller rocks, one for each duplicate.
** The Godola aliens from "Come in, Max" copy Dan and Furuhashi, along with a civilian woman, all of whom infiltrate the base. Dan is trapped in the engine room by "Furuhashi", who then impersonates Dan and takes Anne hostage.
* TheCassandra: "Seek Tomorrow" AKA "The Fugitive Fortune Teller", "Who Are You?", "Stolen Time"
* CassandraTruth:
** Double dose of subversion in "Stolen Time". After an act of sabotage in the Radar Room, Dr. Yushima, [[spoiler:under alien control]], calls Dan an alien spy (half-truth). Dan claims that Dr. Y is under alien control (he's telling the truth). Since Dr. Y is a respected scientist and [[YouHaveToBelieveMe Dan attacked him (Dan saw him plant a bomb in the boiler room)]], Dan is thrown in a cell. The Ultra Garrison doesn't believe either claim, anyway.
** Played straight in "Dark Zone" with the Ultra Garrison's telling Alien Pegassa [[spoiler:the Earth can't change its orbit at will]] as well as their offer to evacuate their Space Metropolis inhabitants to Earth.
* ChekhovMIA: Seven in Episode 40, so that the Ultra Garrison can save him.
* ChekhovsGift: Furuhashi's gift from Africa in Episode 39, "Seven Assasination Scheme Part I" comes in handy to save the day in Part II.
** Anne's gift to Dan (a necklace) in "Answer Max!" is a clue that [[EvilDoppelganger Dan is not himself...]]
* ChekhovsGun: The necklace from "Answer Max", when Dan, trapped in a see-through tube in the TDF boiler room, tried to shoot it out of an alien's hand, bouncing the laser beam off of the attached medallion, destroying said tube instead.
* {{Chiaroscuro}}
* CementShoes: In this case (Episode 41), Dan was chained to ''a buoy''.
* CerebusRetcon: Seven's Superior tells Dan in "The World's Greatest Invasion" Part I that [[spoiler:Seven's sustained injuries during his stay on Earth have left him in a weakened condition and to transform again will kill him ...]] Previously, Seven had bounced back from all kinds of predicaments [[StatusQuoIsGod none the worse for the wear]].
* CliffhangerCopout: Episode 14 ends with a creepy freeze-frame of King Joe about to pound Seven in the head. Episode 15 begins with a recap and the plot proper begins just before King Joe (weakly) sets his fists down on Seven. Also, see AngstWhatAngst in YMMV.
* ClockworkCreature: Robot Commander
* ColdSnap: "Showdown at -140º", "Terror on the Moon"
* ColonyDrop: Space Metropolis Pegassa, many times denser than Earth due to the Pegassa's advanced technology, would have been this if the Ultra Garrison hadn't blown it up in time.
* CombiningMecha: King Joe and Ultra Hawk 1.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Kiriyama, Furuhashi, and Soga are none the worse for the wear after being surrounded by fire in Part I of "The World's Greatest Invasion".
* CoolCar: Based on the 1957 Chrysler Imperial, it's the Pointer. It's even got its own theme song.
* CoolPlane: The Ultra Hawk 1, which is actually ''three'' cool planes in one, able to split apart and reassemble as necessary.
* CrapsackWorld: "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet"
* CreepyChild: Shinichi from "Envoy from Nonmalto" and [[spoiler:Alien Perolinga's human form]] in "The Saucers Are Coming".
** This is what Alien Chibull will turn unsuspecting children to, as well as {{ChildSoldiers}}
* CreepyHighPitchedVoice:
** Alien Cool from the first episode.
** The Poll aliens from "Challenge at -140°"
** Alien Perolinga from "The Saucers are Coming!"
** The Kanan aliens from "Return to the North", along with a nice, throaty EvilLaugh!
** Alien Goron from "The Terrifying Super-Simian" speaks like this, but his voice while fighting Ultraseven is considerably deeper.
* CriticalAnnoyance:
** Iron Rocks has a bomb set to go off some time after it chains up and attacks Seven.
** Played with in "Seven Assassination Scheme", when Seven's Emerium Beam lamp blinks.
** Dan's got 15 minutes to free himself and disarm a bomb, or the base will blow up in "Come in, Max".
** In 15 hours, the victims of the alien spore in "The Human Farm" will die if a cure from Saturn isn't administered. Ultra Hawk 2 is too slow; it'd take the rocket 3 days to reach Saturn. Cue Dan's [[spoiler:staged]] HeroicSacrifice.
* CrucifiedHeroShot: A recurring motif in the show.
** Episodes 39 and 40 has Ultraseven crucified by Alien Guts, complete with EyeLightsOut after [[spoiler: sending a beacon signal to Space Station V3 so that his teammates could find him. It didn't work.]] From the same two-part episode, Soga was stuck on the outside of one of the Guts' flying saucers, x-style.
** In "Showdown at -140°", [[spoiler:he recharges his body by flying up into the Sun, hovering with arms outstretched and feet together.]]
** Seven flew with arms outstretched at about 30 degree angles, which gave him a crucified shape.
** In the penultimate episode, when Dan decided to risk his life to save his friends from Pandon's attack, he transformed into Ultraseven by spreading his arms and face-planting onto the Ultra Eye.
* CryingWolf: Alien Perolinga claims the amateur astronomer who saw the alien vessels will soon fall victim to this, if he tried to warn the Ultra Garrison often enough. [[AvertedTrope Dan had other ideas.]]
* CueTheSun:
** The last third of Episode 12, including a battle between Seven and Alien Spehl as well as a quieter moment with Dan, Anne, Sanae, and her brother.
** The [[AirJousting fight against Alien Metron]] at the end of Episode 8.
** The end of Episode 20, which happened after a kaijuu darkened the skies, complete with a rainbow.
** The end of "Showdown at -140 degrees", when the snow melts.
** The sun came out in full force after Seven was revived in "Seven Assassination Plan" Part II.
** The end of Episode 22.
* CurbStompBattle: Seven vs. Pandon (both times), Seven vs. Guts Aliens (first battle). Notice Seven was on the losing end in these examples.
* CurbStompCushion: Seven vs Alien Bado; Bado [[ISurrenderSuckers even cheated]] to poke Seven in the face with some pointy gadget!
[[/folder]]
[[folder: D to F]]
* DarkReprise
** The darker version of "Fight! Ultra Seven" can be heard in the cliffhangers of "Seven Assassination Scheme" and "The World's Greatest Invasion", and also while Dan's superior first appears and orders him to leave Earth. This same tune became Dan's (and later, Leo's) Leitmotif in ''Series/UltramanLeo''.
** The Ultra Garrison theme gets its own reprise.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Compared to the previous show.
* DarkestHour: Episode 11 when Dan goes up the mountain, Episode 22 when Dan chases the alien armada, Episode 39 when Seven is crucified, Episode 48 after Pandon's defeat, and Episode 49 after the alien's plan of attack becomes clear...
* ADayInTheLimelight: Jiro Satsuma got this in Episode 17, his plight inside the mine shaft may have overshadowed the main plot (underground earthquakes caused by robots!) An episode before that also had [[spoiler: Dan seemingly dying in the first five minutes!]] and the Ultra Garrison, minus Anne, who had to handle the bulk of the work with Seven cleaning up a loose end in the final minute.
* [[spoiler:DeadAllAlong: Shinichi from "Envoy from Nonmalto"]]
%%* DeathByGenreSavvy: The Guts aliens.
* DentedIron: Seven's injuries catch up with him in "The World's Greatest Invasion", Part I.
* DetachmentCombat: The individual vessels (Alpha, Beta, Gamma) that make up the Ultra Hawk 1 were each combat ready and could shoot bullets and missiles.
* DeusExMachina: The meteorite that lit up the Moon in "Terror on the Moon".
* DiedHappilyEverAfter: Played with. When Seven leaves Earth, Dan appears in the sky, laughing and running towards his teammates. Only Dan is not really dead. His teammates are sad and doubt he will make it home with all his injuries. One of them says, "We killed Dan".
* TheDitz: A shrill woman who stops at a gas station in "Space Prisoner 303".
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: That was the reaction to [[BannedInChina Episode 12]] among a support group for survivors of the atomic bombs in Japan.
** He hides inside a rock, but space monster Ammon is just one big eyeball...
** On a serious note, the victims of the alien spores in "The Targeted Town" [[HatePlague go on violent rampages]], pass out, and soon after forget what happened, reminiscent of some descriptions of alcoholics' behavior.
** One of the Godora aliens, disguised as a woman, shows up at the Ultra Garrison Boiler Room to watch the bomb in there go off. She tells Dan she's not afraid to die... much like a suicide bomber.
** From "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet":
*** Robot Commander looks like Hitler.
*** Robot Commander's treatment of his secretary looks like DomesticAbuse.
*** His guards wear uniforms reminiscent of Soviet or DPRK army uniforms.
*** Robot Commander claims that humans built robots hundreds of years before Dan and Soga's arrival, then took over the planet, enslaving humans. Robot Commander was by then in need of humans to sustain the machines. [[Anime/TheAnimatrix Seems the machines from Zero One ran with the idea]] ...
** The Spehl Aliens, apart from the real life controversy that got Episode 12 banned, give off a [[PaedoHunt paedophilic vibe]].
* DoNotAdjustYourSet: Many times, such as "Stolen Time" (hypnosis via TV screen), "The Invisible Challenger" and Part II of "The World's Greatest Invasion".
* {{Doppelganger}}: Dan is this to Jiro Satsuma. Also, Dan impersonated Masaki Kazamori in the video specials from 1999.
* TheDoorSlamsYou: In "The Targeted Town", Dan follows the man who restocked the cigarette machine to a dilapidated building and accidentally gets hit in the face by Alien Metron.
* DoppelgangerSpin: The Prote and Guts aliens.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: Dan/Seven's deteriorating condition in the two-part finale.
* DramaticTimpani: The opening theme begins with one, which Tohru Fuyuki borrowed from a Leitmotiv used within the show, possibly the one called "Space Monster"[[note]]that theme has two versions: a slow one with a horn section, the same one Fuyuki rearranged for ''Series/UltramanLeo''; and a faster one with only percussion, used for example in Episode 20[[/note]]
* DrillTank:
** The Magmalizer, which was used in the BigDamnHeroes moments above.
** The Ghos' drill ''missiles'', which they deployed in the hope of destroying Earth.
* DrivenToSuicide:[[spoiler:Alien Maya]]
* DroneOfDread: Some of the musical cues, like the Stings. Some of the synth sounds added to the Cinar dub[[note]]like Episode 8, when Dan is following the truck, is a good example[[/note]] have that effect, too.
* DubInducedPlotHole: This is in regards to the Cinar dub and Episode 48. Even if Dan is not in his best shape, how could he zone out for 40 minutes and fail to warn the UG in time to prevent the arrival of Pandon without incurring the ire of Kiriyama? The Captain would have punished him (ground him on the spot), and instead said nothing. There was no indication in the original Japanese episode that 40 min passed.
* ElaborateUndergroundBase: The UG base. Just the main Operations Room is about 18 stories down.
* EleventhHourRanger: Kurata in the last episode, after learning Dan was Ultraseven.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Dan's first scene in the show, where he runs into Furuhashi and Soga, preventing them from being abducted by aliens. After a passing policeman disregards Dan and vanishes into thin air, Dan scolds the two UG members and introduces himself. He then looks up, eyes sparkling, and a UFO becomes visible...
* EstablishingSeriesMoment: The show opens with the mysterious vanishing of a driver during a traffic stop, briefly describes the Ultra Garrison and their underground base, then the TDF brass briefs Captain Kiriyama, the narrator introduces each of the remaining members, who in turn get briefed, with Furuhashi and Soga driving to the site of one of the disappearances. Cue Dan Moroboshi appearing...
* EtherealChoir: The Pole aliens' Leitmotiv.
* EurekaMoment:
** The Spehl aliens discover a source of better human blood: children!
** The UG figure they can save Seven from execution by recharging him through his beam lamp.
* EverybodyLaughsEnding: Some episodes ended in an upbeat note, like "Project Blue"
* EvilDoppelganger:
** [[spoiler:Dan and Furuhashi]] in "Answer Max".
** Furuhashi and Soga in "The 0.1 Second Kill".
** Kiriyama's friend Ishiguro in "The Green Terror".
* EvilIsPetty: Robot Commander slaps a girl for not making him coffee the way he likes it.
* EvilKnockoff: Seven had one in "The Decisive Battle of Dan vs. Seven".
* EvilLaugh: So many, like the Spehl aliens in their hideout, or Alien Metron after trapping Dan in his spaceship.
* EyeBeams: Seven, Alien Spehl, Android Zero, Alien Goron, and others. Seven in particular [[XRayVision can see invisible aliens]] as well as emit energy blasts.
* EyeLightsOut: Happened to a few kaijus and aliens throughout. For a heroic example, see CrucifiedHeroShot above.
* TheFaceless: The old man in "The Fugitive Fortune Teller" encountered these.
* FakingTheDead: Dan flew the Ultra Hawk 3 into an alien fleet in "The Human Ranch" so he'd be shot down and crash, allowing him time to transform and fly off to Saturn in search of a cure for the alien virus affecting Anne and her friend Ruriko.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Ultra Seven's Eye Slugger tends to dish these out by slicing monsters to pieces.
* {{Fanfare}}: The main title song (both versions), the song "Urutorasebun" and many parts of the score (especially during a transformation sequence, like in "Fight! Ultraseven")
* FantasticVoyagePlot: "The Flower Where Evil Lies"
%%* FauxAffablyEvil: Robot Commander
* FillingTheSilence: The Cinar dub adds synth music during moments of silence or sound-effects-only scenes. Take the dump truck scene from "The Targeted Sound", for example. In the Japanese version, the scene with the dump truck trying to run Dan off the road has no dialogue or music until the truck stops. In the dubbed version, the scene begins with [[ScareChord a droning synth chord]], [[NothingIsScarier taking away from the suspense]]. Same with Furuhashi's [[HatePlague sudden fit of anger]].
* FingerTwitchingRevival: Two words...
* FirstNameBasis: Dan and Anne
* FlawExploitation: The Metron aliens are counting on humans to turn against each other and fight each other to death so their invasion goes smoothly.
* FloatingInABubble: The Ghose aliens from "The World's Greatest Invasion" Part I capture Amagi in an energy bubble just before Pandon is unleashed.
* FlungClothing: From suits and ties to Ultra Garrison uniforms in Episode 12.
* FriendlyEnemy: Metron [[AffablyEvil is pretty nice to talk to, and is polite to Dan]]. However, he's also responsible for hundreds of violent incidents in the town he has a hold over.
[[/folder]]
[[folder: G to H]]
* GameBreakingInjury: Or rather, ''injuries'', which weakened him so badly that, in Episode 48, his boss from M78 ordered Dan to go back home and not to transform until ready to leave.
* {{Gaslighting}}: In "The Green Terror", Captain Ishiguro was replaced by a plant alien who terrorized Earthlings before capturing them and replacing them with plant aliens disguised as humans. Ishiguro's impostor would become moody and secretive before transforming, go out on rampages, and later pretend to wife Mitsuko and their housekeeper that nothing was going on[[note]]He angrily chastises the housekeeper at one point[[/note]], even after they witnessed his true form a few times. It all culminated with "the couple" going on a vacation by train and his transformation into a kaijuu before her own eyes.
* GenreRoulette: Among the genres thrown into the science fiction mix are police procedurals ("Space Prisoner 303"), horror ("Project Blue", "The Green Terror"), spy movies ("Stolen Time"), thrillers ("The Suspicious Neighbor"), melodrama ("The Brave One"), and war movies ("Glory for whom?").
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: Some of Seven's weapons and powers have him stretch out his arm and extend his index finger.
* GloryHound: Aoki from "Glory for whom?", which got him and others killed.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: The [[TransformationTrinket Ultra Eye]]
* GoodIsNotNice: Nuclear scientist [[{{Jerkass}} Dr. Iwamura]], which [[HumanAliens Alien Shapulay]] exploits by trying to con Anne into believing the scientist is an alien.
* GoshdangItToHeck: Because it was intended for children's syndication, the Cinar English Dub has this. However, the occasional "damn" and "hell" are spoken. It was still rated TVPG anyway.
* GrandFinale: Episode 49, complete with [[spoiler:a farewell to Anne, a final battle, a BigDamnHeroes rescue, and a flight back to M78.]]
* GratuitousGreek: The Ultra Hawk 1 vessel [[DetachmentCombat can split in mid-air into Alpha, Beta, and Gamma vessels that can fly and shoot lasers]].
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe:
** Alien Spehl, sliced vertically in mid-air. Seven even sends his Eye Slugger skipping over the surface of a lake, just like a stone.
** Alien Wyar
* HatePlague: "The Targeted Town"
* HatesEveryoneEqually: Mr. Ichinomiya from "The Lonely Earthling", to the point of accepting sponsorship from research scientist Dr. Niwa, whom he knows to be Alien Prote in disguise. [[UnwittingPawn Niwa in turn used him for nefarious purposes.]]
* HellIsThatNoise:
** Alien Bell's BrownNote chirp
** Ammon made a high-pitched sound to scare off Earthlings
** The sound of a cuckoo clock just before Seven's Superior speaks to Dan for the first time
*** Later in the same episode, the faint sound coming from the radio that only Dan can hear, signalling the arrival of Pandon.
* HeroicBSOD: The Ultra Garrison and Captain Kurata, [[MassOhCrap complete with freeze-frames]], when Anne tells them Dan is Seven in the last episode.
* HeroicRROD: Seven, after fighting Pandon, transforms back to Dan and collapses. Same thing happened after his defeat in the first ten minutes of ''Series/UltramanLeo''.
* HeroicSacrifice:
** [[HeroicBystander Jiro Satsuma]] per the flashback in "Underground Go! Go! Go!", which inspired Ultraseven to stay on Earth, copying Satsuma's likeness under the name Dan Moroboshi. Satsuma lived, subverting the trope.
** Mr. Ichinomiya from "The Lonely Earthling" stepped into a teleporter with Dr. Niwa (Alien Prote in disguise), presumably killing both.
* HeroicSecondWind: Seven vs. Starbem Guyron, Reconstructed Pandon, Iron Rocks, Crazygon, King Joe, Gabora, Darii, Petero, and so on.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Kurata and Hirota
* HiddenInPlainSight: Dr. Miyabe's formulas for his energy shield in "Project Blue" was written [[spoiler:on a flashlight he kept in his bedroom]].
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** Pandon was defeated twice by preventing a weakened Seven from using his Eye Slugger. The first time, Seven grabbed it and mutilated Pandon by using the weapon like a sword or knife; the second time was even worse for the kaijuu because he caught it and threw it back at Seven, who used telekinesis to shoot it back, [[OffWithHisHead decapitating the monster.]]
* HonorBeforeReason:
** In "Showdown at -140º", Chief Yamaoka refused to evacuate the base as the temperature was dropping and people were passing out from the cold. In his view, evacuating the base was the same as deserting their duties as an earth defense team.
** Seven himself, even after his superior orders him not to transform and return to M-78 instead.
** Dan promised to be present at Osamu's surgery, and he was, in spite of being seriously injured during one of Crazygon's rampages.
* HourOfPower: Averted, as he can fight almost non-stop. In extreme cases, he does run out of energy...
* HotBlooded: Soga and Kurata
* HumanAliens: [[VoluntaryShapeshifter Dan Moroboshi]] and a few villains (i.e. Icarus, Godora, Pitt, Prote, Shapplay, Borg) throughout the show are this. They're usually HumanoidAliens in their true form.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: The rationale for most alien attacks. Poignantly so in "Dark Zone" and "Envoy from Nonmalto", the latter comes to a conclusion where even Dan is left wondering if it's true...
** The show was pretty big on this, yes. In one episode an alien puts funky space seeds in cigarettes to erode the trust between humankind and cause our civilization to collapse. The narrator assures us that the episode could only happen in the future. Why? Because people don't trust each other enough in the present. Then again in a slightly later one the narrator almost seems to be encouraging this, when he says that if you see a suspicious person you should call the Ultra Garrison, because they might actually be an evil space invader.
** [[spoiler:The Pedan impersonating Dorothy Andersen]] [[WhatTheHellHero calls out the Ultra Garrison]] for sending an "exploration" rocket to planet Pedan. Their "invasion" caused the Pedans to invade Earth in retaliation. [[spoiler: Ends up being a subversion, because despite Dan convincing them it was a misunderstanding, The Pedan aliens admit they wanted to conquer Earth anyway.]]
** The Ultra Garrison blew up Starbem Guyron's home world by accident, thinking it was uninhabited. Cue kaijuu attack.
* HumanOutsideAlienInside:
** The reason Dan ran away in Episode 49. Any X-rays would reveal his secret.
** One of the Pitt aliens in "Secret of the Lake", who goes as far as to pretend to refuse medical help.
* HumongousMecha: Windam, King Joe, Yuuton, Iron Rocks, Dinosaur Tank [[spoiler: and Fake Ultraseven]]
** CombiningMecha: King Joe
[[/folder]]
[[folder: I to L]]
* ICanStillFight: Dan does this in Episode 49, after Seven's epic near-loss to Bandon. [[TheDeterminator No creepy hologram of his boss, or even a friendly prompting from Anne will stop him.]] He was doing this when he first realized he was ill.
* IdiosyncraticWipes: Episode 46 and the flashback sequence in Episode 39.
* IdiotBall: In Episode 46, Dan and Anne were following a Salome alien responsible for blowing up a ship. Dan blew it when he [[DistractedByTheSexy would stare at the "pretty girl" for a long time]], then chased her by car at high speed. Not long after, he got captured.
* ImpairmentShot: Dan in Episode 4, after his Ultra Eye is stolen; Episode 18, when Alien Bell's BrownNote disabled him; and Episode 48, due to his weakening condition. Seven in Episode 18, after transforming, and Episode 23, due to Gabora's venomous bite.
* ImportedAlienPhlebotinum:
** In "Seven Assasination Scheme", the rock that Furuhashi's car racer friend sent him from Africa could [[spoiler:produce a powerful beam to revive Seven in time to prevent his execution by the Guts aliens.]]
** "Radiation Alpha 73" from Saturn in "The Human Farm" is the only thing that can cure an alien infection.
** The big rock in "The Green Terror" is made of Tilsonite 808, a metal not found on Earth.
* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: The Eye Slugger
* ImposterForgotOneDetail: Really, Godola, if you impersonate Dan, [[spoiler:you should have been wearing Dan's necklace, the one Anne gave him to cheer him up! Also, a cut on your head shouldn't heal that quickly!]]
* ImprobableUseOfAWeapon: [[spoiler: [[ChekhovsGunman Furuhashi's]] gun]] in Episode 38 "Battle of Bravery."
* ImprovisedWeapon: [[spoiler:Atomized red paint, used in "The Invisible Challenger" against the Cool aliens]]
* InnerMonologue: Dan talks to himself a lot, mostly about alien threats he's encountered or SpottingTheThread.
* IronicEcho: All three of the Guts Aliens' Leitmotivs (Aron vs Seven, Dan's first encounter with the aliens, and the fight leading to the crucifixion) can be heard at double speed when Seven destroys their spaceship.
* ISurrenderSuckers: In "Project Blue", Alien Bado pretended to beg for mercy after Seven had the upper hand during their fight, only to produce some kind of stabbing weapon, which he tried to poke Seven in the face with. Seven then tosses him headfirst against some rocks.
** Alien Plastic did something similar, so Seven tried to fly off, only to be frozen in place.
** Dan was promised by [[spoiler:Dorothy Andersen's imposter]] that the Pedan aliens would stop their invasion of Earth after he convinced her that Earth's "invasion" of Pedan was a misunderstanding. [[spoiler:Turns out they wanted to invade Earth anyway.]]
* IWarnedYou: Dan tried to warn Soga and Furuhashi not to get any closer to a sighting of the Cool aliens, only for a local cop to ride past and get abducted himself.
* {{Jerkass}}: Kurata, in spite of his Ensemble Darkhorse status, is often condescending, cocky, competitive, and quick-tempered.
** Seven's superior doesn't show any regard for the people of Earth, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold only for his teammate]].
* {{Kappa}}: Tepeto, who not of Earth, but controlled by aliens.
* KarmicDeath: Gas-guzzling, fire-breathing Kurasso...burned to death, engulfed in flames.
** Alien Maya, DrivenToSuicide after being left stranded in a planet she hated.
* KillAndReplace: Or rather, ''collect in a big alien rock and replace'', is [[PlantAliens Alien Wyar's]] method of invading Earth.
* KnightOfCerebus: The Guts and Ghos aliens.
* KryptoniteFactor: Extreme cold
* LargeHam: Furuhashi and Soga. Dan and Kiriyama have their moments.
* TheLastDance: Seven vs Reconstructed Pandon.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Seven's superior.
* LastSecondChance: Seven successfully convinced Ammon to leave Earth this way. Alien Pegassa got angry and tried to blow up Earth instead when Dan tried this after Pegassa's space colony was destroyed.
* LeeroyJenkins: [[EnsignNewbie Prospective team member Aoki]], who nearly killed Dan and Kiriyama in mid-air, and caused the death of many soldiers on the ground when an alien he failed to report attacked during an exercise. Dan uncharacteristically (for this show) lost his temper and smacked him just before he redeemed himself and died.
* LooksLikeCesare: The human guise of Alien Icarus. Also, even though the makeup job is subtle compared to ''Series/UltramanLeo'', Dan in "The World's Greatest Invasion", when he got progressively weaker due to past injuries.
* LooksLikeOrlok[=/=]FacialHorror: Alien Bado
[[/folder]]
[[folder: M to O]]
* ManlyTears:
** Dan in "Dark Zone", after his radio message to the people of Pegassa goes unanswered.
** [[spoiler:When Dan "dies" in "Fly to the Mountain of Evil", his teammates (Anne is missing, somehow) take it very hard. The twist is that Soga in particular ScreamsLikeALittleGirl, sobbing loudly, yelling out Dan's name.]]
** The end of Episode 49.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Seeing as Seven is [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld thousands of years old]] and Anne is twentyish...
* MeaningfulBackgroundEvent: In the episode "Escape From Area X" Dan is seen covering his ears while an Ultra Garrison staff officer is explaining the concept of [[PhantomZone virtual space]] to Kiriyama. This may look like a blooper, but Alien Bell, which was hiding in that virtual space, emits an ear-piercing ring that bothers and eventually harms humans, but it can and does stun a HumanAlien like Dan. It seemed like Dan's hearing could pick up the sound no matter how faint. Cue [[HellIsThatNoise the ear piercing ring]] coming out of the radio a few seconds later.
* MeaningfulName: Moroboshi = Many stars. Also, from Pandora, ''Pandon''
* MercyKill: What the distruction of Space City Pegassa in "Dark Zone" amounts to. It was either blowing it up or risking a collision with Earth.
* MindManipulation: Almost half of the entire series's aliens have used this on the Ultra Garrison to do their bidding in their plans to take over the world. There are so many different examples of this that it may probably take up most of this page.
** Alien Bira
** Alien Metron
** Alien Iyros
** Alien Shaplay
** Alien Kanan
** Alien Borg
** Dally
** Alien Mandala
** Dancan
** Alien Pega (His own subtitle is Hypnosis Alien!)
** Alien Goron
** Alien Salome
** Alien Ghose
* MonsterMisogyny: Alien Buraco from "The Human Ranch" played with this trope, as it targeted both animals and women (and their chromosomes) to harvest the red spores from its body.
** Darii from "The Flower where Evil lies" targeted women.
** The Spehl aliens from "From Another Planet with Love" targeted young women for their blood, that is, until they realized children had even better blood for their purposes.
* MonumentalDamage: In the last episode, the Ghos Aliens use underground missiles to blow up several world cities such as New York, London, and Paris. [[DoNotAdjustYourSet As they alert the Ultra Garrison]], they show StockFootage as [[spoiler:Amagi]] reads their demands out loud.
* MoodWhiplash: Examples:
** Part of the setup for Episode 39 (a daytime patrol by two Ultra Garrison members that came up with nothing but a happy scene at an amusement park full of unsuspecting people), compared to what happened after Dan and Anne run into the Guts aliens...
** The was a hilarious moment in Episode 24 "Return North!" when the Kanan aliens, operating out of a lighthouse, place Windam under their control, causing him to attack Dan. Dan transforms and "defeats" his friend by wearing him down, complete with "Fight! Ultraseven" playing in the background. This happens just as Furuhashi has a close call with an airliner.
* MouthOfSauron: The alien in "The Vanishing City" communicates with Takenaka, Anne, and Furuhashi through a human psychic.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: The pulsating background in the opening credits? It's just slow motion footage of waves, printed as a negative, sometimes run backwards, processed with pulsating colors. Or is it? Add music, singing, images, and credits to tell the viewer most of what he or she needs to know about the show.
* MurderousMannequin: Android Zero One, complete with an electrifying handshake, EyeBeams, and hand beams.
* MyLittlePanzer: Alien Chibull's toys are conveniently realistic looking and equipped with real ammo.
* {{Narrator}}: [[Series/UltraMan Hikaru Urano]]
* NeedleInAStackOfNeedles: In "The Stolen Ultra Eye", Dan goes alone in the club where he previously saw Alien Maya, and is surrounded with patrons who all wear Ultra Eyes.
* NobleBirdOfPrey: No, they don't fly, but Guts Aliens are the space version of this. Their [[LarynxDissonance deep, deep voices]] really don't help either. Aron also counts. And [[AndZoidberg Starbem Gyeron.]]
* NonHumanSidekick: Three Capsule Monsters: [[{{Mon}} Windom, Mikuras, and Agira]]. Dan summons them by throwing their respective capsules.
** They predate Pokemon by about 25-30 years.
* NonIndicativeName:
** The Eye Slugger, Seven's boomerang-like weapon
** The Magma Raiser, the Ultra Garrison's DrillTank
** The Ultra Eye, being a pair of goggles
** The Pointer is a CoolCar.
** The Ultra Hawks (three of them) are cool mecha; Vessels 1 and 3 are VTOL planes, 2 is a rocketship.
** Averted with the Talk machine the Salome Aliens used on Dan.
* NonIndicativeTitle: Ultra Seven is the name of just one character, not a team of seven Ultramen.
* NoRomanticResolution: Dan and Anne go their separate ways without declaring their feeling for each other.
* NothingIsScarier: Episodes 7, 18, 19, and 25 have their moments.
* NoSell: Against the Guts Aliens (first fight), Starbem Gyeron (with the Eye Slugger, no less), King Joe, and Pandon (first fight, when the Emerium Beam won't even fire; second fight, when Seven threw the Eye slugger and Pandon caught it and threw it back; then Seven used telepathy to defeat him with it).
** In episode 40, the Ultra Garrison tried to rescue a crucified Ultra Seven from the air by firing an AppliedPhlebotinum beam into Seven's Emerium lamp. [[spoiler: Too bad it was a hologram]].
* NotHimself
** Amagi in Episode 49.
** Windam in "Return North!".
** Seven before he fought Dancan in "The Vaporized City".
** Dr. Yushima in "Stolen Time".
** Kiriyama's comrade-in arms Ishiguro in "The Green Terror", after returning to Earth.
** Anne, when Alien Kuraso took her hostage.
** Hirota
** The scientists (and their test subject) in "The Great Ape of Terror"
* NuclearMutant: Alien Spehl
* NuclearWeaponsTaboo: Subverted throughout the show; played straight with the banned episodes.
* OddlyNamedSequel: Both, the show and the titular protagonist, are named Ultraseven, not Ultraman Seven. The naming convention of having every Ultra protagonist named "Ultraman [something]" didn't start until ''Series/UltramanAce''. In fact, ''Ultraman'' and ''Ultraseven'' weren't even part of the same shared universe until a later retcon made them so.
* OffWithHisHead: Alien Chibull, Gabora ([[LosingYourHead it then took a life of its own]]), Alien Prote (it was a Hologram, though), and Reconstructed Pandon, to name a few. In a subversion, Alien Goron's head separated from his body when Seven blew him up.
* OhCrap:
** In "Come in, Max!" when Anne figures Dan is an impostor...
*** Also, when Dan saw the girl in the boiler room, the same one who stole his Ultra Eye.
** In "The Targeted Town" when Dan finally met Alien Metron...
** Dan's reaction to seeing Robot Seven.
** The [[MassOhCrap Ultra Garrison's NoSell rescue]] in Episode 40, see above.
** Another MassOhCrap when the UG found out Dan was really Ultra Seven.
** Don't miss the look on Android Zero One when Dan transformed in front of her and the toymaker. Gynoids expressing surprise?
* OneHeroHoldTheWeaksauce: He lacked a Color Timer (or a time limit in his true form, for that matter), unlike his predecessor. That made him more powerful in comparison. He was still weakened by extreme cold and could still run out of energy and sustain severe injuries if faced with a powerful enough enemy.
* OneWomanWail: When Dan and the Pole Aliens communicate.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When the stakes were higher, [[TheStoic Dan]] [[NotSoStoic seemed to lose his composure]]. For example, his rant in "Super Weapon R-1", the way he treated an injured Aoki in "Glory For Whom" after the newcomer put a lot of lives at risk, or his attack on a brainwashed Prof. Yushima in "Stolen Time".
* OpenSaysMe: Variation: In "Vanished Time", Seven rips the bars of the prison cell Dan was being held in, shaking the surrounding wall, complete with appropriate sound effects.
* OrWasItADream: Dan thinks his superior officer is just a nightmare brought on by his weakening condition, then the Ultra Eye pops out of his pocket and flies across the room to float in front of an owl-shaped cuckoo clock. Dan sits on the bed and reaches for his pocket, realizing the Ultra Eye is not there after all.
* OurHeroIsDead: Episodes 11, 39, 40, 49.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: The Spehl Aliens and Alien Wyar
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: The intangible Shadow Men from "Invasion by the Dead"
[[/folder]]
[[folder: P to S]]
* PainfulTransformation: Alien Chibull in "Android Zero Directive"
* PatrioticFervor: What gets the Ultra Garrison especially worked up about the deaths in "The Ultra Garrison Goes East" is that [[spoiler:as assassinations of foreigners on Japanese soil]] they make Japan look bad. Not to mention, they were scientists from the Western Hemisphere side of the Garrison.
* PhantomZone: Alien Icarus' Fourth Dimension, which Dan successfully breached. The virtual space that Alien Bell was hiding in, too. Also, see SquashedFlat below.
* PhlebotinumBattery: The Sun. Also, see ImportedAlienPhlebotinum above.
* PhosphorEssence: Seven glows during his tranformation sequence.
* PlanetBaron: The episode "Nightmare of Planet 4" has the Robot Chief, an android dictator who controls the entire planet after a robot uprising enslaved the planet's human population. He's also in charge of organizing invasions to kidnap humans from neighboring planets after realizing his tyranny had driven Planet 4's indigenous humans to near-extinction, which he gleefully carries out on a regular basis, and at the end of the episode attempts a full-scale invasion on Earth which is later thwarted by Ultraseven.
* PlantAliens: Alien Wyar
* PowerGlows: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN_y8ZUGUP0 And sparkles!]]
* PowerDegeneration: Due to injuries from his previous battles, Seven became weaker by the time his superior appeared to order him to return home. Dan's vital signs were so far out of whack (pulse 360, blood pressure 400/?, temperature 90ºC) that he should have been dead if he'd been human. Seven could barely stand, his Emerium beam wasn't strong enough, and he had poor control of his Eye Slugger, which thankfully he recovered in his second fight with Pandon.
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: The Eye Slugger
* ProductPlacement: Pepsi in "The Vanishing City", among others.
* ProsceniumReveal: in "Seven Assasination Plan" part I, after the Guts aliens discuss Seven's powers, methods, secret identity and weaknesses, the sepia-toned flashback develops an OminousVisualGlitch. Turns out, they are watching a recording of Seven fighting Aron.
* PublicExecution:
** In "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet", Robot Commander staged live executions of insubordinate humans that aired on TV for his amusement. Dan and Soga didn't realize these executions were real when they first witnessed them as they happened.
** [[WhyDontYouJustShootHim Instead of quietly killing Dan]], the Guts Aliens figure they'll capture Seven, show him to the world for less than 24 hours, and assassinate him just as the world looks on. They thought the people of Earth would surrender quickly after.
* RaceAgainstTheClock:
** In Episode 39, the Ultra Garrison has about 10 hours (until 5:21AM the following day) to save Seven from execution.
** In Episode 37, it was ''seven'' hours from the time the Ultra Garrison got word of the Magellans' incoming missile to impact (midnight). Dan ended up recovering the Ultra Eye 30 minutes before impact
* RecycledInSpace: ''{{Series/Ultraman}}'' meets ''Series/{{Thunderbirds}}'' meets ''Franchise/StarTrek'' ON EARTH!
* RecycledSoundtrack: An aversion for a Tohru Fuyuki score. The show does feature Robert Schumann's "Allegro Affetuoso" in the SeriesFinale (during the InternalReveal and the last fight).
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: GloryHound Aoki, who killed a kaijuu, apologized about his misdeeds and died.
* RedShirt: A young, impetuous upstart called Aoki in "Glory For Whom?", the pilot who crashed with an airliner in "Return to the North", and Soga's sniper rival Kiyota in "The 0.1 Second Kill".
* ReflectiveEyes: "Number 340! No, let's call you by your name on Earth: Ultra Seven."
* TheReveal: From "Envoy from Nonmalto", [[spoiler:Shinichi was DeadAllAlong]]
* {{Revenge}}: The Zampa alien from "Terror On the Moon". In "Super Weapon R-1", Starbem Guyron (a bird-like sentient creature) instinctively targeted Earth, seeing as Earthlings blew up its home planet.
* TheRightOfASuperiorSpecies:
** In "Dark Zone", the Pegassas expected Earth [[spoiler:to change its orbit on a dime]] to avoid a collision with their space colony. Since that wasn't going to happen, they would have destroyed the Earth anyhow, seeing as any planet not advanced enough to comply was not worth their time.
** Since the Ultra Garrison and Dr. Miyabe's Defense Barrier got in their way of an invasion and got one of their alien vessels destroyed, Alien Bado was willing to blow up the Earth.
* RunningGag:
** Furuhashi dismissing a phone call to the Ultra Garrison (or pretty much any reports) as a hoax
** The Ultra Eye being stolen
** Kiriyama flicking his lighter, which shot an outrageous flame. Used for drama in "Terror on the Moon" to indicate an excess of oxygen in the spaceship.
** The need for Capsule Monsters when Dan's unable to transform
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Capsule Monster Windam]]
* SayMyName: "DAAAAAAAAAN!" "AN-NUUUUUUU!"
* SecretIdentityApathy: The Guts aliens, like all other alien threats in the show, know Dan is Seven, and yet they figure (correctly) Seven's public defeat and execution will have the greatest impact on Earthlings.
* SerialEscalation: Dan is irate in "Super Weapon R-1" over the development of Weapon R-2, 10 times more powerful than the titular missile. He claimed that aliens could very well develop progressively deadlier weapons in retaliation, even possibly attempt to destroy Earth. R-1 caused plenty of damage as it was.
* ScareChord: A show specialty; in fact, one of the first bits of music, "Hand of the Invading Demon", the one that introduces the Ultra Garrison, is made up of a series of chords.
* ShapeshifterModeLock: Seven, whenever his [[TransformationTrinket Ultra Eye]] [[RunningGag was stolen]]. Also, when he was defeated in the opening minutes of ''Series/UltramanLeo'', he was stuck in human form for the duration. He recovered offscreen. "Escape From Area X" is a subversion; while Alien Bell's chirp prevented him from using the Ultra Eye, he transformed by sheer force of will regardless.
* ShaggyDogStory: "The Stolen Ultra Eye" from Maya's point of view; "Dark Zone" from Alien Pegassa's point of view.
* ShootTheShaggyDog: The Magellan aliens always intended to blow up the Earth, never mind Maya was left behind.
* ShoutOut
** "The Strange Neighbor" is this ''Ultra'' series' homage to ''Film/RearWindow''.
** "The Green Terror" references both [[spoiler:''Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'' as well as ''Film/InvasionOfTheBodySnatchers'']].
** Pedan Robot King Joe [[{{Tuckerization}} is named after writer Tetsuo ''Kinjou'']] and is reminiscent of Mechani-Kong[[note]]Small head, broad shoulders, metal body[[/note]] from 1967's ''Film/KingKongEscapes''. Notice he's another "king" robot kaijuu.
** Episode 31 is reminiscent of ''Film/FantasticVoyage''
** The opening credits may refer to the ''Bond'' movies, [[Film/YouOnlyLiveTwice one of which]] had just wrapped up production in Japan.
** "The Targeted Town" may have been inspired by an episode of ''Series/TheTwilightZone1959'' called "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street".
** The Magellan aliens from "The Stolen Ultra Eye" may be an allusion to Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer.
** A retroactive example: "The Dead Invaders" were corpses revived by aliens, like zombies, months before ''Film/NightOfTheLivingDead1968'' and years before the Invaders did the same with (sometimes) dead humans in ''{{Series/Mirrorman}}''.
** Also, the mecha in this show were inspired by ''Series/{{Thunderbirds}}''.
** The name of the Ultra Garrison's top level organization is the Earth Defense Force (Chikyū Bōeigun in Japanese), which is the Japanese title for ''Film/TheMysterians''.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: Given that Seven created his human form based on brave civilian Jiro Satsuma, Kohji Moritsugu played both Satsuma and Ultra Garrison member Dan Moroboshi.
** Several actors played their own {{EvilDoppelganger}}s, among them Moritsugu and Iyoshi Ishii (Furuhashi) in "Come in, Max!".
** Linda Hardesty played both Dorothy Anderson and her alien impostor.
** One actress played both twin Pitt aliens in their human form.
* SilenceIsGolden: Other than vehicle sounds, Dan's chase of the dump truck in "The Targeted Town" is silent. That is, until the Metronian speaks...
* SixthRanger: Dan first showed up as a civilian [[AllAccordingToPlan that happened to run into Furuhashi, Soga, and an alien invasion.]] After suggesting a method to make the otherwise invisible Cool aliens visible and vulnerable to attack, he rode shotgun in one of the Ultra Hawks to deploy the Ultra Garrison's ImprovisedWeapon. The plane crash-landed and he called on Windam to attack the alien ships. When Windam was overwhelmed, he called him back, transformed, killed an alien, set the hostages free, went giant-sized, and took the alien ship into outer space to be blown up. Dan was then inducted as a full member of the Ultra Garrison.
** Captain Kurata in Episode 49, after his HeroicBSOD.
** Furuhashi's friend Natsu-san, in Episode 40.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: From giant-sized (most of the time) to the size of a small insect, and sometimes even human-sized.
* SmokingIsNotCool: "The Targeted Town" had smokers who attacked others in a fit of rage, some even crashed planes or shot innocent bystanders. Not even Soga or Furuhashi were spared the effects of smoking just one cigarette.
* SocietyOnEdgeEpisode: "The Targeted Town"
* SoundtrackDissonance:
** Tense moments in "[[RuleOfThree The Targeted Town]]", as well as the TearJerker end of "From Another Planet with Love", are scored to upbeat, classical-sounding, music.
** Played with in "Time of Victory", which is based on "Kurata and Kiriyama"; it begins with {{ScareChord}}s and a foreboding tone, yet segues into the more familiar heroic march.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Pandon was originally called Bandon. Also, the anglicized names vary all over the place.
* SquashedFlat[=/=]PhantomZone: One episode had aliens do this to humans, not by literally squashing them, but by [[spoiler: taking their picture, somehow capturing their life essence on film, leaving the inert bodies behind. Dan was one of the victims.]]
* StarfishAliens: Metron, Wyar, Guyros
* StayInTheKitchen: Dan to Anne in the English dub of Episode 39. PlayedForLaughs.
* StockFootage: The destruction of major world cities in Episode 49 was lifted frame-by-frame from ''Film/TheLastWar'', which featured effects by Ultraman creator Eiji Tsuburaya.
** Footage was also used for various segments on the original ''WesternAnimation/CartoonPlanet'' in the mid-90s, generally as "universal travel guides" narrated by [[WesternAnimation/SpaceGhostCoastToCoast Space Ghost]]; this was possible thanks to Turner having commissioned the dub and subsequently running it on Creator/{{TNT}} (making it fair game for the editors to use- everything in the Turner library was up for grabs).
* StrappedToAnOperatingTable: Anne in "The Terrifying Super-Simian" was captured by a scientist so she could be turned into an ape/human hybrid. Dan in "The Showndown of Dan vs Seven" was captured by Salome aliens for information on Seven's Emerium beam to add that power to the Seven knockoff.
* SwampMonster: One episode has the TDF getting stranded on an alien swamp, called the 9th Dimension, which is filled with giant insects, bloodsucking ticks and a GiantSpider called Gumonga. The swamp turns out to be created by a powerful RealityWarper alien called Bell, who ends up fighting Ultraseven at the end of the episode culminating with Ultraseven drowning Bell in the swamp's waters, destroying it and causing the entire swamp to dissapear.
[[/folder]]
[[folder: T to Z]]
* {{Technopath}}: Alien Chibull, who not only controlled realistic-looking weaponized toys, but also Android Zero.
* {{Telekinesis}}: Seven's got it, may explain his "Urutora Nenriki" (force of will) power [[Series/UltramanLeo later on]]. He used it against Ammon in Episode 16.
* {{Telepathy}}: How Seven communicates with Annon in "Glowing Eye in the Darkness", the Pole aliens in "Showdown at -140 Degrees", and Alien Maya in "The Stolen Ultra Eye".
* TheSoCalledCoward: According to Kurata, Dan failed to stop the Ghose aliens on first sight and ran away after his team was attacked. [[TheLastDance Dan had bigger fish to fry.]]
* ToKnowHimIMustBecomeHim: The Guts aliens unleash flying kaijuu Aron, who takes on Seven in a protracted battle to assess Seven's strengths and weakness, as well as discover his SecretIdentity.
* TooCleverByHalf: The Pegassans are so advanced, they're able to build a floating city in space to save their lives before their home world is destroyed. They're so clever and industrious, they manufacture their own ''air''. However, they're too naive (or arrogant) to think another planet would be willing or able to shift its orbit to get out of their way. The UG's upper brass has them blown out of the sky.
* TooPowerfulToLive: Crazygon, Guts, Ghos, King Joe, Pandon.
* TraitorShot: In "Terror on the Moon", [[spoiler:Shirahama]] got one lingering shot onboard the Station Hawk early on. Later, it was confirmed when Kurata (with his back turned) saw the shadow of [[spoiler:Shirahama's]] hand is reaching toward his oxygen supply.
* TransformationTrinket: The Ultra Eye
* {{Tuckerization}}: From Kinjo to ''King Joe''
* ATwinkleInTheSky: After defeating Pandon, Seven flies off and turns into a star that twinkles when he's further away.
* {{Ultraterrestrials}}: The antagonists in "Envoy from Nonmalto", no pun intended.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Furuhashi didn't pay attention to the changing distant skyline in "The Vanishing City" [[TheSnackIsMoreInteresting because he was too busy drinking a Pepsi]], [[SubvertedTrope until Anne snatched the can out of his hands]].
* UnPerson: A salary man becomes one courtesy of aliens in "Who Are You?".
* VisualPun[=/=]StealthPun: Pandon coming out of a box. ''Pandora's Box''
** Alien Mimy's vessel is shaped like a starfish. ''A starship''
* VerbalTic: Dan says Dwah! (or Mmm-hm! in the English dub) when transforming. He also goes, "O-oh!" in the dub to express surprise.
* VichyEarth: Vichy ''Mars'', in the case of the Ghose aliens. They want the UG to surrender the Earth so they can destroy it, and in return, Earthlings will live in the caves of the red planet as slaves.
* VillainExitStageLeft
** After failing to blow up the Earth, Alien Pegassa from "Dark Zone" ran off into the darkness, never to be seen again.
** In "Challenge at -140º", the Pole (Pohl?) aliens disappeared after Seven killed Gandar.
* WhamEpisode: "The Ultra Garrison Goes West", "Seven Assassination Scheme", and "The World's Greatest Invasion", all two-part episodes.
* WhamLine: "You musn't transform!" from "The World's Greatest Invasion".
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Episode 17 features a literal example of this trope. In the beginning a miner named Jiro, who is identical to lead character Dan Moroboshi [[spoiler:because Ultra Seven saved Jiro's life and based his human appearance on him after the latter nearly died performing a similarly selfless act]], runs back to save a miner's pet mouse from death during a mysterious cave-in. Both are trapped in the mine, and the plot of the episode centers on the Ultra Garrison attempting to free him. Throughout the episode Jiro talks to the mouse (named Lucky) for comfort and yet when Ultra Seven rescues Jiro towards the end of the episode ... we never see what happens to the mouse. Ultra Seven didn't even know it existed, so in all likelihood it was just left to die in the mine [[spoiler: or killed in the explosion that follows]]. Which means that not only does the audience (many of whom would have been children) never receive any resolution to that character arc, but for all we know the entire point of Jiro becoming trapped in the mine, and thus the entire point of the episode's plot, has been negated.
** Agira and Mikuras weren't mentioned in the show after their final appearances. In Agira's case, Dan never called him back in Episode 46. All Capsule Monsters would show up again in other continuities.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: "The Dark Zone" provides a thorough deconstruction of this trope. A TearJerker.
* WhatTheHellHero: Both Kiriyama and TDF Chief Yamaoka got one from a subordinate for not evacuating the base quick enough during the huge blizzard in "Showdown at -140º", causing unnecessary casualties.
** In "Glory for Whom", Dan calls Aoki out on his recklessness.
** Soga and Kiriyama call out Kurata in the last episode after he accused Dan of failing to prevent the alien invasion and being a coward.
** The Pedan alien who negotiated a truce with Dan in "The Ultra Garrison goes west Part 2" laughed when Dan defended the UG, who according to him went to planet Pedan on an "observation" mission.
** Young Shinichi from "Envoy from Nonmalto" angrily called the UG "idiots" for attacking the underground people.
** Dan calls out the UG, Takenaka and the nuclear scientists involved in the making and deployment of "Super Weapon R-1"
--->'''Dan:''' That's a sad marathon that you keep running as you cough up blood.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: In Amagi's case, explosions and heights.
* WorthyOpponent: Seven to numerous aliens who treated him like an actual individual. Sometimes Seven could even talk a few aliens out of attacking Earth since they would trust his word over any human's.
** The Pedan aliens specifically ask Dan to join them.
** The Metron aliens warn Dan to stay away from Kitagawa (where "The Targeted Town" is set) as they don't want to kill another alien.
* WouldHitAGirl: One of Alien Metron's victims, as well as Robot Commander.
* WouldHurtAChild: Sanae's boyfriend from "From Another Planet with Love"
* TheWorfEffect: King Joe, Crazygon, Alien Guts (actually two) and Pandon (''he'' may not be a straight example as [[WorfHadTheFlu Seven already was in bad shape when they fought]])
* XRayVision: Dan/Seven can see invisible aliens.
* YouAreNumberSix: The explanation for Ultra Seven's name is he's the unofficial seventh member of the Ultra Garrison with the way he keeps showing up to save their bacon. Lampshaded in the Cinar dub.
** Also, Stationary Post Observer # 340, as his commander called him in "The World's Greatest Invasion".
** Dan Moroboshi is a ''SixthRanger'', and based on the above rationale, the sixth Ultra Garrison member.
** In ''Series/UltramanLeo'', he's MAC # 1 (Commander) to Gen Otori's # 7.
* YouCantThwartStageOne: Metron brags to Dan about the successful first part of the invasion plan (poison humans to make them belligerent).
** Before Seven defeated the Ghose aliens and Pandon for good, [[spoiler: Amagi was taken hostage, Seven was injured, and several world cities were destroyed]].
