A part of the [[WheelProgram rotating]] ''[[Series/TheNBCMysteryMovie NBC Mystery Movie]]'' series in the early 1970s, ''[=McMillan=] & Wife'' followed the adventures of San Francisco Police Commissioner Stewart [=McMillan=] (Creator/RockHudson) and his wife Sally (Creator/SusanSaintJames), assisted by his aide Sergeant (later Lieutenant) Charles Enright (Creator/JohnSchuck) and the [=McMillans'=] shrewd and sharp-tongued housekeeper Mildred (Creator/NancyWalker). The couple's cases were as apt to arise from their personal life as from his professional one (attending a charity event that is robbed, or finding a skeleton in the wall of their house after an earthquake).

The series emphasized the [=McMillans'=] marriage with a lighthearted spirit, putting to use Rock Hudson's gift for light comedy (also seen in his sex comedies with Doris Day in the previous decade). Saint James, Schuck and Walker all left the series; the final season (with a name change to ''[=McMillan=]'') followed [=McMillan's=] life as a widower (Sally and their son having died in a plane crash), but the series was cancelled before a full complement of episodes was made.

!!Tropes:
%%* AlphaBitch: In the episode, ''"Cop of the Year"'', Sgt. Enright's wife, Monica Fontaine ''full stop'' long before winding up an AssholeVictim by her own hand... accidentally. In fact, she '''milked it''' by blackmailing every man she'd ever come across, all so she could screw over Enright in one staged "shooting" earlier in the episode.
%%* BagOfKidnapping: In the episode "The Fine Art of Staying Alive", Sally [=McMillan=] is kidnapped this way by two thugs after being knocked out with chloroform.
%%* TheBusCameBack: John Schuck guest starred in one episode of ''[=McMillan=]'' as Sgt Enright.
%%* BusCrash: Poor Sally...
%%* NameAndName
%%* OneHeadTaller: Creator/RockHudson is 6'5". Nancy Walker is 4'11".
* PocketProtector: Enright is once saved by a very thick hero sandwich, wrapped in aluminum foil, that he had stuck in his jacket pocket.
%%* PutOnABus: Mildred, Sally and Enright.
* RunningGag: [=McMillan=] is constantly being greeted by pretty young women calling out "Hi Mac!" whom he claims he doesn't remember, whenever he's out in public with his wife Sally.
* SpotTheImpostor: There's a double of Mac who appeared in two episodes. Enright is able to distinguish the two by the use of the phrase "peach cobbler" (his favorite dessert), although for some reason this keeps working even after the double has heard it.
* SuicideNotMurder: The plot of one episode, ''"Cop of the Year"'', where the "victim" is trying to frame Enright by his supposedly shooting her in a fit of rage.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The final episode of the first season featured a ''very'' pregnant Susan St. James as Sally [=McMillan=]. The next season opens with no pregnancy, and no mention of any baby. Something similar happens in season 4. This time, the only mention is at the beginning of season 5 when Sally remarks that they will "try again". Otherwise, no mention was made of her pregnancy at all during season 4
%%* WheelProgram: One of the anchors for ''Series/TheNBCMysteryMovie''.
