->''"Your sorrow, desperation, joy, determination...all of it has been a magnificent thing to behold as you fought to reach this point in time."''
-->--'''The Wordsmith'''

The fourth round of ''Roleplay/{{Trustfell}}''.

'''Warning: all spoilers are unmarked.'''
----
* TwoDunIt: Silver and Gold killed Kimbley together, but it turns out that Gold hit the killing blow and thus is the only one credited and the only one executed.
* OneLastSmoke: Like in Round 1's finale, most of the dead are on Team Kill even as the living are converted one by one to Team Spare. Some of them greet what they see as inevitable doom by breaking out the alcohol.
-->'''Varric:''' If we do die, I want to die drunk.
* AbsenceOfEvidence: One evidence bullet in case 2 is that the incinerator was ''not'' used.
* AgonyOfTheFeet: During the second investigation, an attempt to check one room was led in with a question of whether the character was wearing shoes, in order to prevent this (the floor was covered in broken glass).
* AirVentEscape: Averted. The vents are described as too small for that, as a preventative measure by the Wordsmith.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: The week six motive aims at any {{Small Steps Hero}}es, saying they can save one other person if they kill and get away with it.
* AmbushingEnemy: The shadow creature can escape the pit and CeilingCling to drop down on an unsuspecting victim.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Happens twice, when the receiving character is about to be executed: Mikazuki to Killia, Lusamine to Gangrel.
* BadFuture: A good way through the game, a theory comes up that either the dead or everyone is in one. This is later disproven, though.
* BearsAreBadNews: Thanks to this, Gangrel is overly excited to hear that Vanille has apparently fought a bear.
* {{Beergasm}}: Jasper has this reaction when Varric introduces her to beer.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Gangrel and Lusamine start out despising each other, but end up fighting their way to UnholyMatrimony.
* TheBet: Christo bets Nick that someone will kill to try and escape within a week, while Nick would give it more time. [[ForegoneConclusion Nick loses.]]
%%* BetterAsFriends: Angela says her first relationship ended this way.
* BirthdayEpisode: Viktor celebrates his own birthday after he figures out that it's passed while they've been there.
%%* {{Blackmail}}: The Week 3 incentive is a secrets motive.
* BlobMonster: The shadow is a very large one of these, a sludgy monster that lives in the walls.
* BloodFromTheMouth: One of the Case 6 victims coughed up blood before dying.
* ABloodyMess: Tomato juice stains are found in the first investigation.
* BoardingSchoolOfHorrors: This round takes place in a school again.
%%* BodyHorror: Silver's ghost story talks about the Special-verse version of Lavender Tower, so of course there's some of this in the ghosts.
* BringMyRedJacket: The school uniform provided to everyone is [[RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver red and black]], and considering that this is a setting with a whole lot of murder...
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: Averted in case four, where part of the murder was badly done CPR breaking the victim's ribs.
* CallBack:
** Viktor reads the same [[BlandNameProduct fourth-wall-friendly]] versions of the ''Literature/HarryPotter'' books that Asuka and Ashley read and discussed in Round 1. Wonder what he ships?
** Gold pulls a Tabby. By which we mean brings improvised explosives into the pit to try and take the shadow monster down with him.
** Noir asks why Kimbley doesn't remember being in her round.
** In the finale, Viktor watches the living decide to spare Kirei and mentions that he hopes it doesn't turn out [[TheFarmerAndTheViper the way Round 1 did]].
%%* {{Catgirl}}: Elda is dared to dress up as one.
* CentralTheme: Trying to understand your enemy, even someone who's done terrible things, rather than just figure out what they're doing. As the TrueFinalBoss states, "Knowing without understanding is pointless."
* ChildishPillowFight: Silver sets up a ''dueling ring'' for these one night, invites everyone, and lays down [[SeriousBusiness rules]] beforehand. He and Weavile revisit this in the next week's afterparty.
* CombatTentacles: Sometimes the execution shadow displays this power, as with the third execution.
* ConfusingMultipleNegatives: Faced with an ominously dark room at the second body discovery log, Nick says he doesn't ''not'' think someone's dead in there.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Many of the physically younger students are this or [[ParentalAbandonment practically this]].
* CooldownHug: Estelle attempts this on Killia at the week two incentive. It goes poorly.
* CreepyDoll: Chiyuki tells a ghost story about these. She also technically is one.
* CryIntoChest: Elda to Lusamine when they've let their guard down around one another.
* CutHimselfShaving: Kira uses "falling" as an excuse for stabbing himself in the arm. Nobody buys it.
* DagwoodSandwich: Jasper likes to make towering sandwiches with nothing but lunch meat and mustard.
* DealWithTheDevil: Angra Mainyu, possessing Hilda, offers to sacrifice the survivor pool to bring back the dead. They argue their way past it.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Killia made one in the past and failed. Hanyuu's promise to keep Vanille safe doesn't fare much better.
* DisposingOfABody: When Kira is dressing a self-inflicted stab wound, Kimbley thinks he's killed someone and promptly offers to help him hide the body. This is actually Kimbley's idea of flirting.
* TheDoorSlamsYou: Guzma is unfortunately behind a door just as Milla opens it in his face.
* DraggedByTheCollar: Elda drags Gangrel to the profiles by the ear to prove that she isn't lying about her age.
* DramaticIrony: "Rippin' souls out of bodies?" Gold asks. "Who ever heard of someone bein' able to do ''that?''" Well, everyone who read Round 3, for starters. While all of the soul removal in R3 was actually illusionary, Round 1 still proves that the story Gold is questioning is true.
* DramaticUnmask: PlayedForLaughs in the intro log, where Elda tries to prove that Christo is a human with fake horns and prosthetic ear tips. The PointyEars are real, but the horns pop off, and Christo is [[OhCrap horrified.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: Hanyuu is close to it after the Week 7 incentive, which terrifies Elda when she figures it out.
* DungeonBypass: Before she knows they've all been {{nerf}}ed, Jasper considers just breaking through the wall to escape.
* EmbarrassingTattoo: One of Gold's guesses for what Chiyuki is hiding on her wrist.
* EmoTeen: Watanuki half-jokingly suggests that the Wordsmith is really one of these and the kidnapping is his cry for attention. Guzma later imagines Noir as this, and even later, Killia gets jokes about it and Killidia even more so.
%%* EmptyShell: The Wordsmith describes his son, whom he put into a game and used for his own ends, as this.
* EnemyMine: After the third case, Judy and Nick, who were at odds before this thanks to only remembering early canon to start, decide that they have bigger problems than tax evasion and decide to work together.
%%* EyeScream: Gangrel's ghost story is rather gory and mentions this.
* FacialCompositeFailure: Gold spends an entire day in Week 3 drawing ugly wanted posters of Silver and gleefully putting them up.
* FlowerMotifs: The seventh case uses floriography to show that the victim was killed by a close friend. Floriography comes up again later when the Wordsmith leaves out white hydrangeas for "gratitude for understanding."
* FlyingCar: Elda thinks every self-respecting future should have one.
* FoodSlap: When Kira confesses that he's a SerialKiller and murdered Chiyuki, Gold flings the contents of a bottle at Kira to mess up his suit.
* ForeignQueasine: Kimbley avoids Viktor's borscht because of this trope, even if nothing is really wrong with it.
* FrameUp: Kira frames Kimbley for the murder he commits, both of them being fond of explosions.
* FriendlyTarget: Silver says that's why murderschool is the worst place to make friends, more so than fear for your own life.
-->"And the worst place to rely on anyone is in a place like this. Any of you could kill someone, or get killed, or kill ''Gold'', and-- I'm trying."
* GenderEqualEnsemble: While previous rounds have had more of one gender than the other (with a ''noticeable'' gap in Round 2), this round's cast contains 15 men and 15 women.
* GhostStory: The group meets in week one to tell a bunch of them. Some are real events for the characters, others are made up.
* GoOutWithASmile: Orihime, holding flowers and apparently accepting her fate.
* HeroicBSOD: Remembering that she's not the real Maxwell and that he just created her to be TheBait sends Milla into a depressed state for a week. Thankfully, she bounces back after getting her next memory. Later, Estelle falls into one after Mikazuki kills Orihime to save Killia and the other dead, leaving her alone.
* HeroicSafeMode: While it's hard to call anything Kimbley does heroic, he goes on automatic and focuses only on messing around in the chem lab after one of his two closest people kills the other and frames him for it.
%%* HeterosexualLifePartners: Gold describes himself and Silver as this.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: Elda thinks this. Her ghost story was just about a mundane SerialKiller and didn't even have any ghosts in it.
* HurricaneOfEuphemisms: Elda rattles off a list of groping euphemisms when teasing Watanuki about Orihime.
* HurricaneOfPuns: When Alani tells Gangrel she usually has the power to control water, the two of them start making ocean puns. Later, Lusamine and Gangrel do the same with hand puns after Kira's executed and they call a truce. ''Much'' later, Guzma and Silver do one about eggs.
* IKissYourHand: Gold has to do this to Hanyuu at truth or dare.
%%* INeedAFreakingDrink: Varric at the second retaliation.
* INeverGotAnyLetters: Watanuki fears that the Wordsmith might start to intercept the dead's mail.
* IWantMyJetPack: Upon learning that Phi hails from a world that's TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture, Elda starts haranguing her with questions about robots and flying cars.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: The normally unfriendly Wordsmith refuses to say he was trying to save or protect Hanyuu by tipping Elda off to a possible suicide attempt. He says he doesn't care that much, but would like it if she won.
* ImOkay: Judy manages this when she falls into a laundry bucket.
* InSeriesNickname: The captives eventually name the shadow "Kageshirou" thanks to Hanyuu.
* InUniverseCatharsis: Varric notices that Killia seems to get this from spending an entire day at the punching bag, and Judy and Bruce do the same thing.
* InVinoVeritas: Estelle blurts out her issues and worries over whether making friends was wrong when Elda brings her booze.
%%* IncompatibleOrientation: Gold hints that he's fallen for Vanille.
* InfernalRetaliation: Gold seems to think that he's dealing with Pride. He goes into the pit to be executed and sets the shadow on fire. Sadly, [[NoSell that doesn't work, and Gold is killed by the shadow while it's in flames.]]
* {{Irony}}: The first victim insists upon introduction, "I can take care of myself."
* ItBelongsInAMuseum: Gold's reaction to the outdated technology in the school.
* ItHasBeenAnHonour: Waiting for the outcome of the living Apprentices' attempts to reason with the Wordsmith in the final trial, Varric tells everyone that "whatever happens, it's been nice knowing you."
%%* KubrickStare: Bruce confronts the first culprit with this and threatens torture.
* LibationForTheDead: Some afterparties make use of this. Alani's home has a similar tradition with "mourning tea," which she makes in her own victim's honour.
* LiteralMetaphor: Mikazuki calls himself a great sword, making others think it's some kind of military title. He's an actual sword in human form.
* LivingShadow: One carries out the executions again, but this is ''not'' the same as Round 1's and shrugs off that one's weaknesses.
* LongLived: Many of the Apprentices are over 100. [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld They all look much younger.]]
* LoveConfession: Watanuki to Orihime at truth or dare, which turns into a clumsy trainwreck.
* LuredIntoATrap: A trend this round has characters going to investigate something that's set up to allow someone to kill them.
* MaamShock: A male example with Viktor, who sulks when Gold calls him old and comments on his hairline.
* MagicPlasticSurgery: Phi tells a ghost story about someone who passes out and wakes up in a different body. Guzma interprets it as this instead.
* MakeAWish: The Week 5 incentive offers a wish for something the characters want but can't get on their own.
* MakeAnExampleOfThem: Retaliations are always this, but in this round especially, which employs a shadow to absorb the bodies, it makes sure not to do so until everyone is there to see.
* MarshmallowHell: When Guzma's doing an impression of Lusamine, he mimes her doing this to a Pokémon.
* MassOhCrap: At the Week 7 incentive, when the Wordsmith reveals that he knew all along that the dead were still around and he's threatening them all to get another murder out of the living.
* MatchmakerCrush: Inverted. While Gold hints at one point that he likes Vanille, he realizes the [[IncompatibleOrientation problem with that]] when he asks her who she likes, and then tells her crush Alani about Vanille's feelings to get them to talk once he's dead and can thus speak to Alani.
* MeaningfulName: Mid-game, it's discovered that ''Chronos'' University may have dealt with experiments in TimeTravel.
* MeatVersusVeggies: A number of the characters are vegetarian or vegan.
* TheMerch: Used InUniverse, as some of Viktor's regains are his own merchandise sold on his website.
* AMillionIsAStatistic: Averted, mostly. In the second trial, Alani kills to try and sacrifice the 28 other Apprentices for the billions of people doomed in her home universe. Most of the characters take this ''very'' seriously, even if it is a faceless mass of too many strangers compared to a small amount of people they know.
* MistakenForAnImposter: The intro log is filled with more normal-looking people mistaking the fantastic ones for cosplayers.
* MistakenForRomance: Watanuki thinks Silver and Gold are together. They do experiment later on, possibly inspired by this.
* MistakenFromBehind: Watanuki first sees Chiyuki from the back and thinks she's his boss, Yuuko. Kyrie also confuses Hilda for Chiyuki and vice versa the first time she sees either in deadland.
* MouseWorld: Averted with this round's restrictions, which bar anyone too small to open doors on their own (so mice and fairies were out).
%%* TheNeedsOfTheMany: The second culprit's motive, and also the seventh's, which the Wordsmith calls practical.
* NoAccountingForTaste: Kimbley is told that he needs better taste when he mentions hitting on Kira.
* NoIndoorVoice: Guzma and Hanyuu start yelling at each other from across the room at the meet-the-mastermind log.
* NoSell: This shadow proves handily at the third retaliation and fourth execution that, unlike the one from Round 1, it's not WeakenedByTheLight, explosions, or fire.
* NostalgiaLevel: The entire round is a return to the murdergame genre's school setting. The hardwood decor also calls back to the aesthetic of the first round, which was also set in a school. As well, there are other elements of previous rounds:
** '''Round 1:''' A shadow monster is employed to do the mastermind's dirty work, though it seems not to be the same one. An AlternateSelf of the first round's mastermind is in the cast list.
** '''Round 2:''' Kimbley and Silver appear. Odd inconsistencies start to show up in the setting, such as nothing being weathered or worn down, as if a ResetButton were pushed. The chalkboard contacts the deadland NPC, who mentions Round 2 backstory characters.
** '''Round 3:''' Executions are all carried out the same way, and are not what they initially appear to be. Something has happened so that the dead seem to be no more dead than the living, just separated from them.
* NotSoFakePropWeapon: There's some confusion in the sixth trial because the real, working murder weapon looks just like the blunt prop swords that are a more common machine drop.
* NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThat: Gold says this, extremely awkwardly, when he learns that Viktor is gay, followed by the usual questions of "how did you find out/how do you know you are."
* NothingPersonal: The first three culprits chose their victims without having any particular grudge. Kyrie targeted Adelina because her name was first on the profiles, Alani went after Christo because it would be easy to kill a stranger as opposed to a friend, and Kira had wanted to murder Lusamine, but Chiyuki was more convenient and he was running out of time.
* OfficialCouple: Mikazuki confesses his feelings for Killia and Estelle likes both of them, Hanyuu and Elda become an item, Lusamine and Gangrel fall for one another after hating each other for weeks, and Watanuki and Orihime get together too, with Silver/Gold ShipTease on top of it. Finally, Alani and Vanille get together when they're both dead.
* OhCrap:
** Kira tries to suppress his emotions, but has this reaction in week one when Watanuki theorizes that the game is a test for them, later when he discovers a key item from his canon is in the prize machine (before he realizes that it's a fake; it's a prop from the common drops), and again at the secrets motive.
** A number of Apprentices voice this when Mercy dies and they're left without their coroner.
* OhCrapThereAreFanficsOfUs: Viktor has read RPF of himself and comments that some of it is very strange.
* PassThePopcorn: When the dead spectate the final trial, some of them start calmly drinking tea.
* PhoneCallFromTheDead: The dead start to send letters to the living mid-way through the game.
* {{Planimal}}: One of Lusamine's regains is her Lilligant, and Kira has a strange hybrid of a cat and a potted plant among his.
* PlotAllergy: Christo discusses food allergies with the Wordsmith and whether someone could face execution for accidentally giving someone food they couldn't eat.
* PoisonIsCorrosive: Gold calls Kageshirou "a Poison-type" when he's trying to compare it to a Pokémon, and as Estelle discovers, trying to pet it makes it eat away at her glove.
* PoliceAreUseless: Silver mentions that this is true in his canon. In-game, the ''WesternAnimation/{{Zootopia}}'' cast can't prevent the murders for gameplay reasons.
%%* PoolScene: Chronos U has a pool, so there are a lot of these.
* PrecisionFStrike: Alani when Chiyuki tells her how her canon's reincarnation-or-Void system differs from Alani's religion's "everyone reincarnates" view.
* PretenderDiss: Lusamine says the Wordsmith can't call himself a researcher if his experiment yielding unity instead of mistrust just makes him try to break them further instead of accept the result.
%%* PunchAWall: Killia at the first incentive.
* RasputinianDeath: Kimbley, though he kind of deserved it. Tossed into a pool to drown, broken ribs, set on fire, hit in the head -- it's enough that it was difficult to determine which part killed him.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: A ''lot'' of the characters this round, with many more at realistic ages but still OlderThanTheyLook.
%%* RedOniBlueOni: Killia and Christo. Watanuki, naturally, calls them that by name.
* RestrainedRevenge: For embarrassing him at truth or dare, Watanuki convinces Gold that he's going to show him magic, and when Gold gets close enough, squirts the contents of a water bottle into his face.
%%* RetGone: The Week 2 incentive offers to do this to a successful culprit's enemy back in their world.
* ReversePsychology: Estelle optimistically guesses that the rules are suggesting murder so people won't do it.
* RobotGirl: Alani assumes, wrongly, that Chiyuki is one due to her artificial body.
* RoomFullOfCrazy: Kimbley's room, full of formulae, rambling, and [[TrashOfTheTitans an epic mess]] along with a plot to kill them all. It's described as this in as many words.
* RunningGag: People trading around an airhorn and prank-calling the Wordsmith to sound it in his ear.
* SacredFirstKiss: Orihime freaks out about hers at truth or dare. Gold reassures her that the game doesn't count for that anyway, but when Silver is dared to kiss him, Gold [[HypocriticalHumor starts freaking out about his own first kiss.]]
* SayMyName: A few characters at the second retaliation call out the victim's name, particularly [[NotSoStoic Lusamine]], who'd gone to meet her only to find her dead.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Watanuki guesses that this is the real reason they're trapped in murderschool. Apparently, spirits do this sort of thing all the time.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: The fourth motive, with a twist: it only applies to things remembered in the memory regains. Coincidentally, ''Roleplay/{{Airlocked}}'' also had a regrets motive that week!
* ShoutOut:
** In ''Roleplay/DanganRoleplayRoundThree'', "cheating on your taxes" became a euphemism for entrapment with questions that [[XanatosGambit get you an answer no matter what]], a useful skill to have in a trial. Nick's BigSecret in the secrets motive is ''literally'' that he's been cheating on his taxes. Likely coincidental as that's an actual plot point in his canon, but still amusing.
** When calling Killidia an emo edgelord, Guzma compares him to the main character of ''Fanfic/MyImmortal.''
* SniffSniffNom: Gold has to be warned not to lick evidence when he's about to do just that to figure out what it is.
* SoHappyTogether: We knew something awful was bound to happen when Kimbley offered to listen to Kira and started to make people ship it, if only because [[UnholyMatrimony just look at them]]. Indeed, it's immediately followed by Kira's betrayal.
* SpotTheImposter: Kyrie impersonates Addie when writing a letter to put a more trusted name to her theories.
* {{Squee}}: Orihime does this when Viktor signs her chocobo plush.
* StealthPun:
** Case 2 involves tea brewed in a beaker in the chem lab. Chemis-tea.
** The Roman numeral for 5 is, of course, V. Varric and Viktor are the victims in Case 5.
* StuffBlowingUp: Judy and Nick try to blow open an escape route and are killed for it. This is also Kimbley's and Kira's shared hobby and nerfed [[HavingABlast power]].
* TakeAThirdOption: In the end, Angra Mainyu as Hilda offers to either leave the dead as they are or sacrifice the living for them. The survivor pool remembers the life gummies, though, and revives their friends with those instead.
* TamperingWithFoodAndDrink: Bruce wonders at first if the food is safe, and Kira reasons that the Wordsmith wouldn't kill them all himself if he wants them to do it to one another. Later, Kimbley starts disposing of poisons to prevent this.
* TechnicolorFire: Kimbley shows off his chemical knowledge to Silver by setting a sink in the men's washroom on fire so it burns bright blue.
* TheyreCalledPersonalIssuesForAReason: Say this about Kimbley, he doesn't believe in prying.
-->"We can keep our secrets to ourselves, I can tell you mine, whatever. I figure that if you decide you want to tell me something, you'll tell me eventually."
* ThisIsReality: As Elda says, "We aren't some storybook people!"
* ThisIsUnforgivable: The Wordsmith passes this judgement upon ''himself'' and his own "flawed existence."
* ThreesomeSubtext: Hanyuu/Watanuki/Orihime, Gold/Silver/Watanuki, Estelle/Killia/Mikazuki... it's rare this round to see an actual pairing with two people teased without a third.
* TimeTravel: The round appears to be one big time travel experiment using resources from [[GreaterScopeVillain the virtual murdergame corporation behind Round 2. Even the dead speculate that dying just sent them to some other time, though it's not clear if that's the case.]]
* TogetherInDeath: Mikazuki and Killia. Estelle is heartbroken that they left her behind and starts to think they really just only wanted each other.
* TooMuchInformation: When the second trial's discussion turns to personal preference in [[UnusualEuphemism unrelated matters]], Alani mentions that she would really like people to keep those things to themselves.
* TragicKeepsake: Alani's flower. She gives it to Vanille before dying, and Vanille keeps it for most of the game. The flower goes to Hanyuu when Vanille dies.
* TrainingFromHell: Killia inflicts this upon himself, going nonstop in the dojo once it opens up.
%%* UptightLovesWild: Lusamine/Gangrel, not that either admits it for some time.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Gold and Silver. They egg each other on but keep one another safe when it comes down to it and got into a bloody fistfight after the first trial over protecting Gold's well-being.
* WaxMuseumMorgue: Guzma tells a ghost story like this, substituting ice for wax (averting HarmlessFreezing).
* WaxingLyrical: Kira notes the musical ShoutOut in his profile. He's not amused.
* WeightWoe: Lusamine is thin, but still doesn't like her weight being public knowledge.
* WhamEpisode: After treating the shadow like Round 1's did ''not'' work and it no-sells Pride's weaknesses, treating the chalkboard like Round 2's whiteboard ''does'' work. Furthermore, the deadland NPC knew the dead from the exercise Hilda ran, and the dead quickly send letters talking about TimeTravel experiments.
* WhoNamesTheirKidDude: Thinking back on her own victims, Noir tells Gold that his name is at least better than "[[VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite Natural." Poor N becomes the benchmark for silly names from that point on.]]
* WhoWouldWantToWatchUs: Elda dismisses the idea that the exercise is just for entertainment, saying that the Apprentices "aren't some storybook people" and wouldn't be interesting.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: In the first case, Kyrie lures Adelina out by making a tomato juice "blood" mess and pretending to be wounded, then kills her.
* WrongNameOutburst: When Hanyuu is distressed about Alani killing Christo to try and save her people, she accidentally calls her "Ouka."
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: A few characters say this when Chiyuki says that her secret is that she's not a good person. Gold says it about Silver later and wants the others to encourage him too, and a ''bunch'' of people later say it to Watanuki after he says he's not good enough for Orihime.
%%* YouAreNotAlone: Phi tells Alani this as the latter is about to be executed.
* YouDoNOTWantToKnow: No one wants to explain to Chiyuki what the intended purpose of extremely realistic, anatomically correct life-size dolls tends to be.
