People with badass epithets in anime and manga.
----
* Very common in Literature/AccelWorld. The Seven Kings of Pure Colour all have one, as do other burst linkers who have become notable for exceptional skills or unique abilities. The main exception is actually the main character who is extremely famous for being the only flight capable burst linker but is generally known by variations of the his Duel Avatar name rather than any title.
* In Literature/Baccano, Claire Stanfield's most well-known title is Vino, in reference to the wine-like stains on the floor he inevitably turns his opponents into.
* Manga/BakiTheGrappler features Orochi Doppo, "the Karate God", and Hanma Yujiro, both "The Ogre" and "The world's strongest creature".
* Higuchi Ichiyo from Battle Club is nicknamed "Queen of the Vampires"
* Manga/Berserk: Any army or warrior in Berserk who's worth their salt gets a badass nickname based on some famous trait or heroic feat of theirs.
** The Band of the Hawk are known as the "grim reapers of the battlefield" for their devastating power in combat. Badass.
** Guts gets the moniker "Hundred Man Slayer" as a result of single-handedly killing at least 100 Tudor mercenaries sent against him by Adon Coborlwitz. His destructive RoaringRampageOfRevenge against the Apostles after the Eclipse gets him named "The Black Swordsman" and he is recognized by his black clothing, giant sword, and false arm. He is sometimes also called "The Branded Swordsman" for the Brand of Sacrifice on his neck, evidence that he has survived the Eclipse and countless nightly assaults by demons.
** Before his ascent to demon-hood, Griffith is known as "The White Hawk": His hair and clothing are white, he reaches for his ambition like a bird climbing through the air, and he swoops down on his enemies with his army like a bird of prey. As Femto, his moniker, granted to him by the Godhand, is "The Wings of Darkness". Later he is called "The Hawk of Light" because of his association with the dreams and prophecies of the people of Midland, who view him as their messiah.
** Zodd is known among mercenaries as "Zodd The Immortal" and "Nosferatu Zodd" for his supernaturally long lifespan and seeming ability to come back every time he was rumored to be dead.
** Sir Locus is "the Moonlight Knight", a famous jouster and KnightErrant recognized by his moon-shaped crest.
** Sir Grunbeld is known as the "Great Flame Dragon" for his giant stature, fiery red hair, use of a cannon, and fearsome prowess in battle.
** Bishop Mozgus of the Holy See Inquisition is known and feared by the people as "Bloody Scripture Mozgus" for his fanatical use of torture and execution to punish heresy. His use of an iron-bound scripture book as a lethal bludgeon makes this fearsome name well deserved.
** Bazuso was known as the "Grey Knight" for his grey armor, "The Bear Slaughterer" for supposedly killing a bear with his bare hands, and the "Thirty-Man Slayer" for slaying thirty men.
** "Knight of Skeleton" clearly isn't the Skull Knight's real name; he acquired it by wearing that skeletal armor. If he and Gaiseric are the same person, then he was also known in the past as the "Demon King" and "King of Galloping Death" from his reputation as a ruthless conqueror.
* Played with in Literature/BenTo. The various participants in the combat for half-priced lunch boxes do have titles by which they are known and feared. However, those titles were typically earned in embarrassing incidents that the people saddled with them would rather forget.
** Sen Yarizui is known as "The Ice Witch", though it's not for her SugarAndIcePersonality, but rather because she tried to buy a chilled alcoholic beverage with her bento.
** While Ayame Shaga is something of a looker, her title of "Beauty by the Lake" was earned when she fell asleep on a park bench shortly after eating a bento she'd won.
** Yo Satou has the undesirable nickname of "The Pervert" because he was DraggedIntoDrag for one battle.
** This is played straight by Orthros , who gained fame by simply being very strong fighters.
* Manga/BlackClover:
** Yami Sukehiro is known as the "Lord of Destruction" for his use of rare, powerful Dark Magic, which also gives him another title as the "Magic Knight Heretic".
** Mereoleona Vermillion is famed as "the Uncrowned, Undefeated Lioness" for her family's association with lions, for being more aggressive than her male relatives, and for having never lost on the battlefield due to her inhuman strength.
** Noelle's mother, Acier Silva, was named the "Steel Warrior Princess" for practically dancing over the battlefield, with her strength and beauty captivating many before her untimely death.
* Manga/BlackLagoon has a few of these such as Sawyer the Cleaner but the most notable is Roberta, "the Bloodhound of Florencia", a name that terrifies even hardened criminals in her native Colombia.
** Revy herself has the epithet "Two Hand", so given because of her style of shooting.
* In the one-shot Manga/Blame sequel, the lead character is referred to as "The Calamity" by the Silicon Beings. Given his penchant for mass destruction, it fits.
* In Manga/Bleach, Yoruichi has been an unrivaled master of FlashStep for at least an entire century. Even before she disappeared from Soul Society 100 years ago, she was already known as the Goddess of Flash; a title that has yet to be contested.
* In Literature/BofuriIDontWantToGetHurtSoIllMaxOutMyDefense, Maple has such an absurdly high defense stat that she manages to earn the nickname The Walking Fortress.
* Manga/CaptainTsubasa has them aplenty:
** Tsubasa Ozora has Soccer no houshigo (Heaven Sent Child of Soccer), "Soccer Genius", "Field Samurai".
** Kojiro Hyuga has "The Fierce Tiger".
** Genzo Wakabayashi has "Super Great Goalkeeper" (often shortened as SGGK). Similarly, Ken Wakashimazu has "Super Great Karate Keeper" (SGKK).
** Jun Misugi has "The Field Prince" and "Glass Ace".
** Karl Heinz Schneider is often known as "The Young Emperor/Kaiser".
* Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex: Everyone of any power has a GratuitousEnglish one, which in some way describes their unique power. There's Railgun, Imagine Breaker, Meltdowner, Accelerator... and, perhaps the best of them all, the doctor named "Heaven Canceler". Think about that one for a second.
-->Heaven Canceler: Well, just don't die. As long as you don't die, I can fix you.
* Baron Saijou from Manga/ChoujinSensen holds the title as [The Executioner] for his high success rate in killing.
* In Manga/Classi9, most composers in Class S- have a "second name" related to their exploits in classical music: Mozart is the Wonderkind, Beethoven is the Master Musician, Wagner is the King of Music Drama, Liszt is the Piano Virtuoso, Chopin is the Poet of the Piano. Tchaikovsky has another type of "second name" because of his reputation as a ruthless fighter in Vienna, he is the "Poisonous Mushroom of Russia". Since the nicknames InUniverse are the same as their real-life counterparts, it is safe to assume Haydn's second name would end up being the Father of the Modern Symphony.
* In Manga/Claymore, several of the main characters have nicknames that belie their badassedness, including "Teresa of the Faint Smile" who can kill Yoma without ever having to use her extra powers.
* In the second season of Anime/CodeGeass, Suzaku Kururugi has earned the nickname "White Shinigami Reaper"; his Knights of the Round teammate Luciano Bradley is "the Vampire of Britannia." Before the name of the pilot of the Lancelot was known, the Black Knights referred to Suzaku as the White Helmet (or something similar, depending on translation). Lelouch's mother was known as Marianne the Flash.
** Played for laughs with Lloyd, whose known as 'Earl of Pudding' because he likes pudding.
** One random pilot refers to Kallen as "The Ace of the Elevens", but it's unclear if this is an actual nickname or merely a statement of fact. Her codename in Lelouch's cell phone is Q1.
** And Lelouch Lamperouge, or more accurately, Zero, is "the Man Of Miracles". Lelouch is also referred to as the "Black Prince". In contrast, his formidable brother Prince Schneizel is known as the "White Prince".
** Princess Cornelia is known as the "Witch of Britannia" for her ruthless conquests on the battlefield.
*** Even Princess Euphemia gets a nickname. spoiler: After she orders (and personally partakes in) the murder of thousands of Japanese people after being accidentally Geassed into doing so by Lelouch, she comes to be derisively known as "Princess Massacre".
** Guilford is known as "The Spearhead of the Empire".
** In Akito the Exiled, the titular protagonist is referred to as the "Ghost of Hannibal" by the Euro-Britannians.
* In Literature/Corsair, Ayace, the armada commander, is called "The Devil Killer".
* Subverted in Manga/CromartieHighSchool when Akira Maeda decides on a new nickname for himself: "The Dragon of Razors". Unfortunately, due to his ButtMonkey status, no one seems to call him by that name.
** There's also the rock star guy the students call Freddie, since he's a mute and no one seems to know his real origins.
* Back at the time when from Manga/DailyLivesOfHighSchoolBoys was a EnfantTerrible-level TheBully, she was known as the Archdemon.
* Anime/DarkerThanBlack gives us the Black Reaper, Hei. Notable in that the only name we know him by is also a CodeName; "Hei" is Chinese for "Black".
* Manga/DeliciousInDungeon has the Lunatic Magician, a being who is murderously insane, unbelivably strong and hugely dangerous to anyone she comes across.
* In Anime/DigimonAdventure02, the, the Armor Digimon (with the exception of Magnamon) all have nicknames that invoke the crest on the Digi-Egg they use. These nicknames are announced along with their names during digivolution:
** Flamedramon, "the Fire of Courage".
** Raidramon, "the Storm of Friendship".
** Halsemon, "the Wings of Love".
** Shurimon, "the Samurai of Sincerity".
** Digmon, "The Drill of Power". He later starts calling himself the "Drill of Knowledge" because it "makes him sound smarter".
** Submarimon, "The Reliable Guardian of the Sea".
** Pegasusmon, "Flying Hope".
** Nefertimon, "Angel of Light".
* The Literature/DirtyPair are so bad-assed entire planets make evacuation plans just in case they might show up. Please remember to call them the Lovely Angels.
* Manga/DragonBall:
** Protagonist Son Goku is sometimes called the "Legendary Super Saiyan" for being the first in 1000 years to realize the saiyan legend and transform into a golden-haired warrior.
*** Anime/DragonBallZBrolyTheLegendarySuperSaiyan turns the "Legendary" Super Saiyan into its own form, a variant of the original transformation. As the user of this form, Broly himself is referred to as the Legendary Super Saiyan. The character was given a canon counterpart in Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly, but this version has not been referred to in-universe by any nickname.
** Long time antagonist Frieza, sometimes known as Emperor of the Universe, or the Emperor of Evil, for his massive galactic empire which he ruled as a merciless tyrant.
** Vegeta, Prince of All Saiyans, or some variant.
** Demon King Piccolo. Once a nameless Namekian who split into the evil Piccolo and good Kami. Piccolo reincarnated himself as his own son, who fused with Kami and temporarily took on the tile The Namek, but eventually defaulted back to Piccolo.
** Muten Roshi, the Turtle Hermit or Kame-Sennin, master of the Turtle School of martial arts.
** Anime/DragonBallSuper gives us the assassin Hit, known as Hit the Infallible or Never-Miss Hit.
** Super also introduces Jiren, strongest mortal in the multiverse, known by the title Jiren the Gray
* Literature/Durararas Shizuo Heiwajima has the very well-deserved title of God of Destruction. Occasionally, this is extended to "God of Destruction in a Bartender Suit" to make sure people properly identify him.
* Manga/FairyTail: "Salamander" Natsu, "Titania" Erza, "The Demon" Mirajane, "Beast Arm" Elfman, "Black Steel" Gajeel, "The Demon Princess" Miki Chickentiger, "Iron Rock" Jura, "Cold Emperor" Lyon, Yuka "The Wave" Suzuki, "Sky Sorceress" Wendy, "Twin Dragons" Sting and Rogue, "Shinigami" Erigor. Literally a quarter of the recurring cast has a title of some kind.
* Some Servants in the Franchise/FateSeries have nicknames such as "The King of Conquerors" (Alexander the Great), "The King of Knights" (King Arthur) or "The King of Heroes" (Gilgamesh).
* Kenshiro of Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar is known as the "Man with the Seven Scars" or the "Savior of Century's End", while his AloofBigBrother Raoh is known as "Ken-oh" (the "King of Fist") or the "Conqueror of Century's End".
* Gavrill from Manga/FrankenFran is known as "The Wolf", due to her brutality and shape-shifting powers.
* Every Pandora in Manga/Freezing has a badass nickname, most notably The Untouchable Queen and The Monster of West Genetics. Other nicknames include The Immortal, Godspeed of the East, Mad Dog, Hitman, Tempest Phoenix, The Maverick, etc...
* The Japanese title of Manga/FrierenBeyondJourneysEnd is "Sousou no Frieren" which means Frieren at the funeral, which speaks to the series' basic initial theme of Frieren being at at the funeral of an important friend, Himmel the Hero, and only then understanding how important he and the rest of the party are to her. Sousou can also mean undertaker and "Sousou No Frieren" is what demons know her by, for the mass instant funerals she caused by killing hordes of them in her wake.
* Manga/FullmetalAlchemist is a remarkable example, going so far as to having the Amestris government actually issue every State Alchemist a similar moniker. The series occasionally spoofs the problems of this trope, with the people being more familiar with the fearsome alias than the person behind it -- resulting in them frequently mistaking Edward Elric's walking armor brother, Alphonse, for the eponymous Fullmetal Alchemist.
** FourStarBadass Olivier Mira Armstrong, AKA "the Northern Wall of Briggs".
** Roy Mustang is referred to as the "Hero of Ishval" while Riza Hawkeye is the "Eye of the Hawk".
*** Though, given the reputation the battle of Ishval has in the world of FMA and Roy's actions in it, the title "Hero of Ishval" may also double as TheButcher. The soldiers in his company who initially bestowed the title on him meant it to be an honor, but many of his foes (especially the homunculi) often invoke it to claim a NotSoDifferentRemark and the title is sure to come up in any HannibalLecture. Roy himself seems to hold the latter view, Case in point being that a homunculi bringing it up in conversation with Roy is an indicator that he/she/it is about to be terminated with Extreme Prejudice.
*** Roy's official title, incidentally, is the "Flame Alchemist". There are people on his side who will flee the moment they hear the Flame Alchemist is coming.
** The same series parodies the trope when a former SerialKiller refers to himself by alias only, stating that his real name would make his opponent piss his pants in fear. When his name is revealed, Al is not impressed and has never even heard of him, irking the serial killer greatly. While it turns out he was in fact famous, Al is from a small rural town.
** Each of the "seven sins" homunculi get one. We have Lust "the Lascivious", Gluttony "the Voracious", Envy "the Jealous", Sloth "the Indolent", Wrath "the Furious", Greed "the Avaricious", and Pride "the Arrogant".These epithets all mean the same thing as the homunculus's name, so it's like calling them "Greed the Greedy".
** And there's also Scar, whose real name is never revealed, called as such after the eponymous disfigurement on his forehead, who the entire military has been trying to hunt down. He accepts the moniker because he had rejected his right to his "holy name" after the fall of Ishval.
* Anime/FutureGPXCyberFormula:
** Hayato is usually called "Ushiwakamaru" but he is also been called "The Young Emperor of the Circuit" as the series goes on.
** Knight Shoemach, fittingly enough for a very fast driver, has the nickname "The Supersonic Knight".
** Kaga's nickname is "The Wild Child of the Circuit" and "The Migratory Bird of the Circuit". He’s also called "Peacock Head" by Henri, due to his colorful hair.
** Shinjyo is usually nicknamed "The Young Japanese Warrior", but after suffering from bad luck, Henri, like Kaga, also gives him a more embarrassing one, "Fleeing Warrior"Ochimusha.
** Randoll's nickname is generally "The Amadeus of the Circuit", but he's also been called simply "Genius".
** Other characters have their nicknames as well, with Gudelhian and "High-Tech Cowboy", Heinel and "Precision Machine Driver", Bootsvorz and "The One-Eyed Dragon" and Ohtomo and "Nature Boy of the Circuit".
* Being a series focused on fighting, Manga/Gamaran has his share of ominous or cool nicknames, including: Jinsuke Kurogane, The Slayer of 1000 Men, "Demon Splitter" Midou Shingo, Sasuke Sakakibara "The Crinsom Extractor/The Heart Ripper", Kibe Ryuho "The Silver Demon", Kiyomori "King of the Doom Fist" and Gensai Kizaki "The Sword Fiend" among others.
* In Anime/GaoGaiGar, the Primevals primarily refer to Mamoru as "The Legacy of Cain" and Kaidou as the "Disaster Left By Abel".
* Manga/TheGeekExHitman: PlayedForLaughs. In his native Italy, Marco is feared as the ProfessionalKiller "T.O.", short for "The Oracle of Florence". In Japan this gets backronymed to "Top Otaku" by his new friends in the Hades Girl Eurydice fandom, who don't know he's a former assassin.
* Everywhere in Manga/GetBackers. EVERYWHERE! Most of them contain the word master though. Lightning Emperor Ginji, Beast Master Shido, Lady Poison Himiko, The Undead Hishiki, Thread Master Kazuki, Doctor Jackal Akabane, The Unknown Boy Makubex, the list just goes on.
* In Franchise/GhostInTheShell, Maj. Motoko Kusanagi is always referred to as "the Major" over two seasons and a movie, her first name is used about five times, and her surname appears about as often, although it appears in writing a few more times. In the manga, it's used about as often. It's common among fans to just refer to her as the Major. Some fans forget her real name, because it's so obscure. Oh, and it might not be her real name at all; in the manga, when the narrator introduces her, it is as "a woman calling herself Major Motoko Kusanagi (an obvious alias)". Additionally, while "Motoko" is a rare female name, "Kusanagi" is a mythological sword; an equivalent English name would be Brittany Excalibur. If you still believe that's the cyborg super-agent's real name, I've got a bridge to sell you. On Mars.
* Manga/GiantRobo OVA : almost every major character has a fancy, descriptive nickname or codename and call each other by the names just like passing around business calling cards.
* Sakata Gintoki of Manga/Gintama was known as the "Shiroyasha (White Demon)" during the Joui War. Heck, all of the four most powerful Joui warriors have these titles -- Katsura was dubbed "Nobleman of Terror", Takasugi was the "Demon Army General", and Sakamoto was called "Loud Person" (though, to be fair, he was also known as the "Dragon of Katsurahama").
* Franchise/Gundam:
** All of the Ace Pilots in Anime/MobileSuitGundam have this, the most famous being the legendary Char "The Red Comet" Aznable, who was clearly based off of Richthofen.
** Spoofed by Johnny Ridden being known as the "Crimson Lightning", which causes him grief since he's constantly being mistaken for Char. It's so bad that his CatchPhrase is practically "I'm the Crimson Lightning, dammit!", said immediately after someone mistakes him for Char. It doesn't help that not only are their custom color schemes similar (red is of course the dominant color, though Ridden mixes in some black and/or yellow depending on the machine), so are their fighting styles.
** Also from Zeon, Ramba Ral is known as "Blue Giant". And team of Gaia, Mash and Ortega known as "Black Tri-Stars".
** Series protagonist Amuro Ray is known as the "White Devil" by Zeon forces, primarily for the RX-78-2's white parade colors, as well as his incredible skill at piloting. For most of the series, Amuro's real name is unknown to Zeon; they just identify him by his unique mobile suit. During the events of Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack, he is known as the "White Unicorn".
** Anime/MobileFighterGGundam should be noticed especially here, for it given us an ace pilot so Badass that his given name is never stated due to world potentially imploding due to awesome overload. We simply know him as Undefeated of the East, Master Asia.
*** A manga of debatable officialness gives his name as Shuji Kurosu.
*** Master Asia's title in Japanese, "Touhou Fuhai", translates as "Invincible East". This is translated in the dub as "The Undefeated of the East".
*** Then there's the entire Shuffle Alliance, which Master Asia is a former member of. All the members are named after playing cards, such as Domon Kasshu, the King of Hearts. Master Asia was the previous holder of that title.
** Zechs Merquise earns the nickname "Lightning Baron" because of a battle where he took out rebel pilots with incredible speed; after kicking butt during OZ's coup d'etat and receiving a two-rank promotion, it's upgraded to "Lightning Count".
** Also, Duo Maxwell refers to himself as the "Shinigami" or "God of Death" ("The Great Destroyer" in the edited version). This is less self-congratulatory than it sounds: he calls himself that primarily because everyone he's ever been close to has wound up dead.
*** Shinigami ("Reaper" in the dubs) is also given to Terry Sanders Jr, for less impressive reasons: he has a history of being the sole survivor of his squads after their third mission together.
** In Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED, Mu La Flaga is known as the "Hawk of Endymion" while Andrew "The Desert Tiger" Waltfeld is probably a ShoutOut to Erwin Rommel below. Another one of La Flaga's is "the man who makes the impossible, possible", a ShoutOut to VideoGame/MetalGear series protagonist Solid Snake which Expy inspired many of La Flaga's characterization.
*** Model kits series add several Red Barons to CE era. All of these characters later appear in Manga/MobileSuitGundamSEEDAstray:
*** Earth Alliance has Edward Harrelson "Ed the Ripper", Rena Imelia "Sakura Burst", Jane Houston "White Whale" and Morgan Chevalier "Mad Dog of the Moonlight". The South America arc in Destiny Astray was set to pit Ed in duel against other three.
*** Ed's nickname comes from his tendency to carve up enemy machines with his sword so that they "bleed" oil. Before he had mobile suit, he once did the same thing with an airplane wing...BY ACCIDENT! He was hung over and didn't notice he was about to collide with an enemy machine until it was too late. He tore the enemy machine in half with his wing, which earned him the moniker "Ed the Ripper".
*** ZAFT has Mikhail Coast "The Doctor" (who is an actual medical doctor, one of the best in the world at that, though he's also known for "dissecting" mobile suits in battle). Gundam SEED Astray also reveal that Miguel Aiman had the nickname "Magic Bullet of Dusk" and add Gud Vair "ZAFT Hero".
*** Finally, Orb has Barry Ho "God Hand" and Jean Carrey "Glittering Star J" (who, amusingly, at different times fought for all three sides in the war).
** In Anime/MobileSuitGundam00 Sergei Smirnov is known as the "Wild Bear of Russia", spoofed with Patrick Colasour being known as the "Immortal Colasour" ("Colasour the Indestructible" in the dub), a reference to how he miraculously survives repeated beatings by Gundams. Graham Aker later becomes known solely as "Mr. Bushido" in the second season, but this is due to his Japanophile tendencies (wearing a samurai-styled mask and commissioning multiple samurai-styled custom mobile suits).
*** Manga/Gundam00SideStories add Amy Zimbalist, his comrades call him "Steel Cowboy". To enemies, he's "Devil of Unification".
** The other red baron in the UC continuity is Anavel Gato of Gundam 0083. He's called the "Nightmare of Solomon", having presumably racked up a large number of kills during the battle of Solomon and then A Boa Qu.
** Weird enough, the Zeon ace with highest kill count is Brenev Auggs "One Shot Killer". Never heard of him? That's because he's only mentioned in supplement material of model kits.
*** The MSV material is full of ace pilots with these kind of nicknames, like Federation fighter pilot Texan Dmitri (called "Lady Killer" because of his good looks). For the record, Auggs earned his name because he only fired his gun at point blank range.
** Tatsuya Yuuki of Anime/GundamBuildFighters briefly had the name "the Crimson Comet" prior to becoming Meijin Kawaguchi III. Since then, none of the named characters had referred to him by the former title.
** Anime/MobileSuitGundamIronBloodedOrphans: Mikazuki Augus becomes known as the "Devil of Tekkadan" among Gjallarhorn for his extremely brutal and ruthless fighting style.
* Van from Anime/GunXSword has dozens of nicknames, to the point where even he has trouble keeping track of them. Most of them are references to previous episodes, played straight or for laughs.
** There is one name, Van the Nice Guy, that recurs because Joshua keeps calling him that and wrote it down somewhere.
** Van is horrible with names, including his own nicknames. He took several episodes just to get his sidekick's name right. The only nickname he can remember with any consistency is "Van of the Dawn."
** A longer list stolen from The Other Wiki: "Van the Unemployed", "Van the Freeloader", "Hangover Van", "Steel Van", "Invincible Van", "Pretty Van from the Garbage Dump", "Van the Unsung Hero who Gives It All He's Got", "Daybreak Van" (or "Woolseyism Van of the Dawn" in the English dub), "Nice Guy Van", "Van that Weird Guy who Helped Out", "Van of a Thousand Conquests", "Van of a Thousand Naps", "Van, The Devil in The Poisoned Tuxedo", and "Van the Devil's Swallowtail Suit".
* Alucard of Manga/Hellsing is sporadically referred to as the "No-Life King".
** Alexander Anderson, by contrast, has a ton of nicknames (Paladin Anderson, Bayonet Anderson, etc.), all of which are apparently on his file in Hellsing.
* Manga/HellsParadiseJigokuraku: Quite a few of the criminals have one;
** "Gabimaru The Hollow". His name itself is a title for the strongest ninja in his village.
** Tamiya Gantetsusai "The Blade Dragon"
** Aza Chōbe "the Bandit King"
** Warped Keiun, "Hunter of the Hundred"
** Rokurota "The Giant of Bizen"
** Akaginu, "The Cannibal Courtesan",
* Manga/HenkyouNoRoukishiBardLoen:
** Bard Loen's title is The People's Knight (Gal'Degash Guera), but he is also knows as The Undefeated Knight for an obvious reason.
** The mercenary Ven Uril is called the Red Crow (Roro Spear), named after a bird one sees when they're about to die.
** Jogg Ward has earned himself a nickname Raging Wind (Banzal).
* In Literature/HighSchoolDXD, if a character has a nickname, then it's likely they're very strong, especially if it's a dragon.
** Our protagonist has the title of Red Dragon Emperor, although he can make Breast Dragon Emperor sound badass too. His rival Vali is known as the White Dragon Emperor.
** For the dragons we have Welsh Dragon Ddraig, Vanishing Dragon Albion, Blaze Meteor Dragon Tannin, Chaos Karma Dragon Tiamat, Gigantis Dragon Fafnir, Prison Dragon Vritra, Sleeping Dragon Midgardsormr, Mischievous Dragon Yu-Long, Ouroboros Dragon Ophis and Apocalypse Dragon Great Red.
* It seems as though every adventurer in Literature/IsItWrongToTryToPickUpGirlsInADungeon has some kind of nickname, with the Loki Familia having a few good ones e.g. Ais Wallenstein "Sword Princess" or Riveria "Nine Hells" and even Lefiya's "Thousand Elf" There's a list of many of them (https://danmachi.fandom.com/wiki/Aliases here), with various levels of badassery.
* It's easier to list the characters in Manga/Jackals who don't have killer nicknames, though this may have something to do with the fact that the cast is primarily made of up, you know, killers. The main hero and his rival are "Alligator" Nichol Heyward and Huya "Requiem" Godfrey. Many of the others sound a little goofy when translated into English... but then again, "the Flying Monkey" is probably an improvement over "Jasper Tennessee" anyway. Richard Domingo takes the cake here, having multiple nicknames -- Lightning, the Bolt, and the Virtuoso of Firearms.
* Manga/JujutsuKaisen: Ryomen Sukuna is universally acknowledged in the world of jujutsu as "the King of Curses", being the undisputed strongest sorcerer from over 1,000 years ago.
* Anime/K combines this with AnimalMotifs and ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming -- Misaki Yata is called "Yatagarasu", a mythological crow (note that his love interest, Saruhiko Fushimi resembles a crow, while Misaki resembles a monkey).
** The AnimalMotifs also show up with Kuroh Yatogami, a.k.a. "The Black Dog". His name, Kuroh, sounds like "Kuro" meaning "Black", but it's written as 拘朗, the first part of which means "dog".
* Tokita Ohma in Manga/KenganAshura, later down the road with many Kengan Matches under his belt he gets nicknamed “Ashura”, a vicious fighting demon, that is coming from an Association filled with vicious fighters so Ohma became a demon among demons.
* Every master in Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple has at least one of these. The most impressive one is Hayato Fuurinji's "The Invincible Superman", alternatively translated as "Man Without Enemies" (The term "Without Enemies" is equivalent to "Invincible" in kanji), because there's seriously no one alive who poses a great threat to him.
** The masters of Ryozanpaku are known as, "Master of all Chinese Kenpo" Kensei Ma, "Philosophical Jujitsu Master" Akisame Koetsuji, "The Hundredth Dan Brawler" Shio Sakaki, "The Death God of the Muay Thai Underworld" Apachai Hopachai, and "The Prodigy of Sword and Mistress of Weapons" Shigure Kosaka.
** The masters of Yami are, "One Shadow" , "Saint Fist" Ogata Isshinsai, "Fierce Fist God" Sougetsu Ma, "Fist of Destruction" Alexander Gaidar, "God Hand" Akira Hongo, "Demon Emperor of Underground Muay Thai" Agaard Jum Sai, "Smiling Steel Fist/Angry Iron Fist" Diego Carlo, "Demon Fist God" Silcardo Jenezad, "Bewitching Fist" Mikumo Kushinada, and "Fist of Brahman" Cyril Rahman.
* The VisualNovel/LittleBusters! Yonkoma side-stories spoof this, with the eponymous characters thinking up such nicknames for themselves so they can become more familiar. No one is happy with theirs, all ending up with things like "The Man with the Golden Sphincter".
* In Literature/LogHorizon, Shiroe is known as the Villain in Glasses for his being a master strategist in not just battle, but social manipulation to the point where most of the Akiba Adventurers consider him a MagnificentBastard, and, well, he wears glasses.
* In Literature/LoveChunibyoAndOtherDelusions, it seemed that everyone who had afflicted with Chuunibyou would have one of this.
** Yuuta, the "Dark Flame Master". Nowadays, though, he'd rather disassociate himself from this.
** Rikka "The Wicked Eye".
** "Mjolnir Maul" Sanae.
** [[spoiler:"Mori Summer" Shinka, though she regrets it as much as Yuuta does his, if not more.]]
* Franchise/LyricalNanoha:
** Nanoha earns the title "Ace of Aces" from her military peers during the TimeSkip between A's and [=StrikerS=].
** Subaru eventually gains her own nickname in the post-[=StrikerS=] TimeSkip: Silver Ace.
** Fate is also known as "The Naval Ace" and as revealed in Force, Hayate is known as "The Walking Lost Logia."
** Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate's Evil Twins from the Battle of Aces game are called, respectively, the Starlight Destroyer, the Thunderblade Assailant, and the Ruler of Darkness.
** The Wolkeritter and their devices each hold a title of their own, however, only Vita likes waving it around as a part of her BadassBoast
---> "Vita, Knight of the Iron Hammer, and the Steel Count, Graf Eisen. There is nothing in this world we can't destroy."
** Olivie Sägebrecht was known as "The Queen Second to None in combat" and "The Lady Knight of Shutra."
** The Ancient Belkan king DahlgrĂźn was known as the "Thunder Emperor" during his lifetime. His descendant, Victoria, inherited this title and his temperament during battle. Her rival, Harry Tribeca, is known as "Buster Head."
* Manga/MadeInAbyss: The five White Whistles, the greatest explorers of the titular Abyss, have all been granted both badass titles AND badass epithets that summarize who they are and help build up the hero mythos that surround them.
** The Unmovable Sovereign, Ozen the Immovable is named as such for her monstrous strength, toughness and seeming agelessness.
** The Sovereign of Destruction, Lyza the Annihilator is a fearless adrenaline junkie with a fascination for powerful weapons. She also has a terrifying temper, as we're told that she once went after the people responsible for her husband's premature death and murdered every single one of them.
** The Sovereign of Dawn, Bondrewd the Novel is a genius scientist devoted entirely to research and progress at any cost; He's even perfectly fine with sacrificing his own life, well-being and sanity to make strides forward.
** The final two white whistles have yet to appear in the story, but have similarly extravagant names; The Sovereign of Guidance, Wakuna the Chosen and The Sovereign of Mysteries, Srajo the Obscure.
* Literature/MayIAskForOneFinalThing: Scarlet El Vandimion carries several prominent nicknames. At the beginning of the series, she's best known by her schoolmates as "the Icy Rose," cool, distant, and beautiful. As a child, however, she was "the Mad Dog Princess," for her love of punching. It's a title she's glad to reclaim.
* Anime/MazingerZ: the machine itself is more than once called "The Invincible Tower of Black Iron". Mazinkaiser carries on the tradition of being called the "Demon God of Justice".
* Anime/MetalArmorDragonar[='s=] CharClone, Maiyo Plato is known as the 'Blue Eagle of Giganos'.
* The eponymous Manga/MurderPrincess, Falis, who didn't actually get that nickname in-universe 'till right at the end of the anime. She's mostly called that by enemies of her kingdom... but not when she's within earshot. Mostly because, if you're an enemy of her kingdom and within earshot of her, you're most likely already dead.
* Manga/MoriartyThePatriot:
** Jack Renfield, otherwise known by his old military nickname "Jack the Ripper"
** Charles Augustus Milverton, the self-styled "King of Blackmail"
** William James Moriarty (and his brothers) "The Lord of Crime"
* The resident cape of Manga/MyHeroAcademia, All Might, is also known as "the Symbol of Peace," a responsibility he takes very seriously. A few other pro heroes have RedBaron type sobriquets as well, such as Present Mic ("the Voice Hero") and Midnight ("the 18+ Hero"). All For One, All Might's archnemesis, has the all-too-sobering epithet of "the Symbol of Evil".
* The highest-ranked Otome in Anime/MyOtome have nicknames that match that of their [=GEMs=]. For instance, Shizuru is known as the "Bewitching Smile Amethyst", and her rival Haruka holds the secondary title of "Continental Orb Topaz". Some of these tend toward the "odd" end of the WordSaladTitle scale.
* Manga/Naruto: The Yellow Flash of KonohaMinato Namikaze, The White Fang of KonohaSakumo Hatake, The Demon of the Hidden MistZabuza Momochi, The God of ShinobiHiruzen Sarutobi and Hashirama Senju, The ProfessorHiruzen Sarutobi again, The Sage of Six Paths/Ancestor of ShinobiHagoromo Ōtsutsuki, The Legendary Sannin (The Toad SageJiraiya, The Slug Princess/The Legendary SuckerTsunade, and The White SnakeOrochimaru) the Zombie ComboHidan and Kakuzu, The Copy Ninja/Kakashi of the SharinganKakashi Hatake, The God of AmegakurePain...
** [[spoiler: The Bloody Habanero[=/=]Red Hot-blooded Habanero and The Orange Hokage for Kushina Uzumaki and Naruto Uzumaki, respectively.]]
* Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi:
** Evangeline A.K. [=McDowell=] has many of these including Maga Nosferatu, Feared Queen of the Night, and Apostle of Destruction. Her least favorite is "Kitty". Very few people can get away with using that one. The others, though? She loves hearing them, especially if the person saying them is doing so fearfully.
** Jack Rakan has his own collection of nicknames: "The Thousand Blades", "The Man Who Cannot Die", "The Immortal Fool", "That Damn Guy Who You Can Stab With Swords All You Like And It Won't Do A Thing, Dammit!"
** Negima is full of these; there's "Death Glasses" Takamichi, Nagi the "Thousand Master", etc. Nagi is an interesting one because unlike a lot of the other titles, it's actually never made clear why he's called that. There are a few theories suggested, but they're both patently false: He barely knew five spells, let alone a thousand and he mostly certainly did not have a thousand ministra. Even if he had, the only confirmed two we ever saw were both with adult men, not young pretty girls like the joking explanation suggested.
** Negi himself eventually gained title of "Lightning God", quite appropriate for someone who is not only able to use lightning magic to great effect but also turn his whole body into it.
* In the Manga/OnePiece universe, basically anyone who's done anything is going to get an epithet of some kind, which can be silly ("Cotton Candy Lover" Chopper), literal (Straw Hat Luffy wears one), and often badass. A list:
** The Straw Hat crew:
*** "Straw Hat" Luffy is an inversion, as his name is mundane and based on him always wearing a straw hat (the hat has a backstory, but the people who gave Luffy that epithet don't know it). 'Straw Hat' strikes fear in others not because the name is scary, but because it means that Luffy got involved.
*** "Pirate Hunter" Zoro, who got his name because he was a bounty hunter before Luffy found him.
*** "Cat Burglar" Nami, a notorious East Blue thief prior to joining the crew.
*** "Devil Child" Nico Robin is a bit of the subversion, because she didn't get the name because of her combat prowess (which, to be fair, is formidable) or her personality, but because she can read the Poneglyph language and thus is a threat to the World Government's revisionist history.
*** Usopp has a habit of attracting the most badass nicknames despite being one of the weaker crewmates. His first epithet was "King of the Snipers" (as his alter ego, Sogeking), and he later became known as "God" Usopp.
*** "Black Leg" Sanji got his name from his very kick-heavy fighting style.
*** Franky's epithet is "Cyborg", for obvious reasons. It's changed to "Iron Man" after the events in Dressrosa.
*** Brook's first epithet was just "Humming", but after he TookALevelInBadass during the time skip, he got the title "Soul King".
** The Worst Generation: "Captain" Eustass Kid, "Massacre Soldier" Killer, "Magician" Basil Hawkins, "Red Flag" X. Drake, "Surgeon of Death" Trafalgar Law (he really is a capable surgeon), "Roar of the Sea" Scratchmen Apoo (who uses sound to attack), "Glutton" Jewelry Bonney, "Gang" Capone Bege (very mafia-themed), and "Mad Monk" Urouge.
** The (original) Seven Warlords of the Sea: "Hawk-Eye" Dracule Mihawk, "Sir" Crocodile, "Tyrant" Bartholomew Kuma, "Heavenly Demon" Donquixote Doflamingo (son of a former World Noble, hence the 'heavenly' part), "Pirate Empress" Boa Hancock, "First son of the sea" Jinbe. (Gekko Moriah does not have one, oddly enough.) Mihawk also used to go by "Marine Hunter", as an antithesis to Zoro. .
** The Four Emperors: "Whitebeard" Edward Newgate, "Red-Haired" Shanks, Kaido "of the Beasts", "Big Mom" Charlotte Linlin, .
*** Whitebeard pirates Division Commanders: Marco "The Phoenix" (he ate the Phoenix Zoan), "Fire Fist" Ace (has PlayingWithFire powers), "Diamond" Jozu, "Flower Sword" Vista.
*** As are those right below Kaido in his chain of command: Jack "the Drought", Queen "the Plague", and King "the Conflagration".
** On the Government side of the law, we have: "AokijiBlue Pheasant" Kuzan, "KizaruYellow Monkey" Borsalino, "AkainuRed Dog" Sakazuki, "FujitoraWisteria Tiger" Issho, "RyokugyuGreen Bull" Aramaki, Sengoku "The Buddha", Garp "The Fist", "Demon Bamboo" Vergo, and Smoker "The White Hunter".
** Here's more miscellaneous ones: "Foxfire" Kin'emon, Cavendish "of the White Horse" (He's also known as the "Pirate Prince"), Bartolomeo "the Cannibal" (not literally- it's from a Japanese saying that basically means that he's annoying), Rebecca "the Undefeated Woman" (She's also known as ), Buggy "the Clown" (Later upgraded to "the Star Clown"), Oars "The Devil" (Also known as "The Continent-Puller"), "The Adventurer" Fisher Tiger, Ryuma "The King", Van Augur "the Supersonic", "Death God" Doc Q, "Corrupt King" Avalo Pizarro, "Evening Shower" Kanjuro, "Wet-Haired" Caribou, "Blood-Splatterer" Coribou, "Thunder Soldier" , Shiryu "of the Rain", and "Demon Sheriff" Lafitte.
* Basically everybody who is anybody in Literature/Overlord2012 has some kind of badass title, usually given in the character's profile. Main character Momonga has the rather long and unwieldy "The Strongest Magic Caster, With The Appearance Of A Skeleton", though within the New World, he eventually acquires a much more condensed and widely used title: "The Sorcerer King". He is also known as "The Raven-Black Hero" in his guise as the adventurer Momon.
* Anime/OvermanKingGainer has Gain, who is known as the Black Southern Cross.
* The future selves of the main characters of Manga/PsychicSquad each get one of these nicknames. Kaoru is the "Queen of Catastrophe", Aoi is the "Lightspeed Goddess", and Shiho is the "Untouchable Empress". In what we can only assume is a StableTimeLoop, the BigBad who's seen the future through precognition refers to them by these names in the present and gets his entire organization to as well... which means that they're named after themselves.
* Parodied with Kuno in Manga/RanmaOneHalf who keeps giving himself nicknames that no one else recognizes, starting with "Blue Thunder of Furinkan High".
* Yomiko Readman of Anime/ReadOrDie is known as The Paper. This name is apparently given to the most talented PaperMaster of the British Library and is passed on whenever one retires or dies. Yomiko is the 19th person to be issued that codename. Her deceased lover/mentor Donny Nakajima was the 18th.
* In Manga/TheRecordOfAFallenVampire, the protagonist and eponymous fallen vampire is Akabara "Red Rose" Strauss. Meanwhile, We also have his Dhampire subordinate Leticia, who garners the nicknames "Lety" and "Mountain Cat", and there's Strauss' mortal enemy, who's known only by her moniker, "The Black Swan".
* Literature/ReignOfTheSevenSpellblades: Parodied in episode 8 of the anime with Evelynn Odets, who wants to be called "Galewind Evelynn" or "Cold-Blooded Evelynn", but is stuck with the considerably less-threatening moniker "Speed-Talker" for being unusually fast at speaking incantations. (Odets is an AdaptationExpansion of a character who was completely unnamed in the original novels.)
* Manga/RiseOfTheOutlawTamer gets bonus points for Baron Dragon Slayer actually being named Baron.
* Kenshin from Manga/RurouniKenshin was known as the Hitokiri Battousai (basically translated, "The Man-Cutting Battoujutsu Master"; most English translations keep it pretty close) during the Bakumatsu, as a reference to his profession (assassin) and his sword fighting style (a form of iaijutsu).
** Hajime Saito is known as the Wolf of Mibu.
** Sanosuke originally had "Zanza"(short for Sanosuke of the Zanbato) when he was a fighter-for-hire. At the end of the series, Yahiko earns one himself: "The man who has caught 1000 blades".
** He tries to dissociate himself from it; people accepting that the name does not define him constitute several meaningful moments in the series. Chiefly Kaoru at the beginning, but Aoshi contradicting Saito from "Battousai" to "Kenshin" at almost the very end bears remembering, too.
*** An advantage of 'Hitokiri Battousai' being so infamous was that only a minority of people even knew he was "Himura Battousai", and practically nobody was aware of the personal name "Kenshin".
** In the first deeply serious fight in the series, versus the psycho assassin Jin'e Udo (Kurogasa), he gets into trash-talk mode and says, "let me show you the meaning of the name, Battousai." (as stated above, the name means he's the best damn practitioner of battoujutsu in Japan; Hiten Mitsurugi Style is based heavily upon it)
* Literature/TheSagaOfTanyaTheEvil: Tanya Degurechaff is known by several titles which strike fear into those unlucky enough to share the battlefield with her: "The White Silver", "Mad Dog", and "The Devil of the Rhine". Eventually, all of these combine into one definitive nickname for her, that being "Rusted Silver", named after the appearance the blood of her enemies take when dried.
* In Anime/SamuraiChamploo: The final antagonist is nicknamed the Hands of God. He is fighting the two protagonists by himself in a one sided battle, something no one has done in the series and his swordsmanship might as well be magic.
* Each of Manga/TheSevenDeadlySins has his or her respective Sin as an essential Red Baron. What's not revealed until nearly the end of the story was that, 3,000 years ago, the original Elizabeth of the Goddess Clan (which the current Elizabeth begins to re-integrate by this point) was an absolute terror to the Demon Clan, to the point they called her "Bloodstained Ellie".
* The Flame Haze of Literature/ShakuganNoShana have... interesting titles, to which they are always referred to by, except by close friends. These include: The Arbiter of Reverse Reasoning, The Master Throne, The Specialist of Everything, and The Interpreter of Condolences.
** And going even further, Shana doesn't actually have a name besides her title, The Red-Hot Eyed Flame Haired Hunter, until Yuji gives her one.
* Anime/TheSkyCrawlers has a feared ace known simply as "The Teacher".
** In the game, he is known as, in order, "Lynx", "Cheetah" and finally, as the "Black Cat" as the game goes on and his fame spreads.
* Literature/Slayers: Lina Inverse, the Bandit Killer, the Doramata (Dragon Spooker), the Enemy of All Who Live. She's not too fond of the last two but will cheerfully use the first.
** The Heartless Sorcerer Swordsman, and his friend Mummy Man.
* In Manga/SoulEater, the sweet, ditzy blonde lady Marie Mjolnir is aptly nicknamed the Crusher. (She turns out to be a LightningBruiser.) Justin is known as the Executioner, as his weapon form is a guillotine. Maybe a running thing for Death Scythes, although the others have no such nicknames (although being called the 'Demon' such-and-such' could be enough on its own).
** Spirit's title is Death Scythe due to his form being a Scythe and having the Death Scythe status. Or because he's literally Death's scythe, as in the personal weapon of Death.
* Manga/StarStrikeItRich:
** Hina's epithet is the "Revolution Princess", in reference to her catchphrase "Time for a revolution" and the fact that she was adopted by rich folks.
** The Sena sisters are known as the "Psycho Sisters".
** Yuzuha Lee's epithet is the "Explosive Kung-Fu Girl".
* Marie Angel of Anime/SuperDimensionCavalrySouthernCross is nicknamed the "Cosmo Amazon".
* Literature/SwordArtOnline:
** Many of the more prominent fighters on the front lines get names like this. Kirito is known as the "Black Swordsman" (both for his Elucidator and Black Cloak of Midnight), while Asuna is known as "Lightning Flash" in SAO (for her unbelievable speed) and the "Berserk Healer" in ALO due to being a healer who uses melee attacks.
** The Mother's Rosario Arc gives us Zekken (lit "Absolute Blade"), who has a 67 duel winning streak, including one against Kirito. Kirito goes so far as to say that were Zekken a player in SAO, they would have gotten the DualWielding skillA unique skill given to the player with the highest reaction speed instead of him.
** In Gun Gale Online, Sinon is nicknamed "Hecate", the same name as her weapon, the PGM Ultima Ratio Hecate II, which she wields with deadly efficiency.
** In Literature/SwordArtOnlineAlternativeGunGaleOnline small, fast [=LLENN=] gets the nickname "Pink Devil" as an infamous Player Killer clad all in pink hanging out in a pink-tinged desert.
* Anime/TenchiMuyoGXP: The protagonist gains the nickname "Lorelei" Seina, because his weaponized bad luck, like the German siren's song, lures (SpacePirate) ships to their doom.
** There's also Seto Kamiki Jurai, or, as she's more commonly known by: the "Devil Princess". She has earned this nickname for very good reason, as most space pirates quake in fear whenever she makes an appearance or even hearing her name has the same effect for most of them.
* Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann: Simon The Digger. Interestingly, this wasn't initially supposed to a badass title -- back in the village where he was born, he was given this nickname because, well, he was really good at digging.
** THE MIGHTY KAMINA!!!
** Subverted with Lordgenome in that it's actually his name. The reason is that, instead of being Lord Genome, it was combined to Lordgenome to reduce confusion among Japanese readers/viewers about "lord" being a title, rather than a part of the character's first name.
* All Demon Lords have titles such as this in Literature/ThatTimeIGotReincarnatedAsASlime:
** Lord of Darkness, Guy Crimson
** Destroyer, Milim Nava
** Pixie of the Labyrinth, Ramiris
** Queen of Nightmares, Luminous Valentine
** Earthquake, Daggrull
** Sleeping Ruler, Deeno
** Platinum Saber, Leon Cromwell
** NewbieLater upgraded to the much more impressive Chaos Creator, Rimuru Tempest
* Wild Tiger, veteran from Anime/TigerAndBunny is also known as the Crusher of Justice, due to his bad habit of massive collateral damage.
* In Manga/TokyoGhoul, many Ghouls have aliases gained as a result of some trait or behavior. Some were assigned to them by the CCG or the Media, while others actively create an identity. In general, they serve as a warning since only dangerous Ghouls manage to move from a Case Number to an alias. A few Investigators also manage to gain a nickname as a result of their deeds.
** "Binge Eater" Rize, a woman infamous for her appetite and selfishness.
** The protagonist, Kaneki, earns several along the way -- "Eyepatch", "One-Eyed Kaneki", and "Centipede".
** Several characters throughout the story acquire nicknames associated with owls, due to sharing a kagune through various means:
*** The original Owl was "Kuzen" Yoshimura, the manager of Anteiku and Kaneki's mentor of sorts. The nickname came from his kagune being reminiscent of an owl's wings, and further simmilarities can be made out in his kakuja-form. However, during his younger years, he didn't go by any nickname in particular,
*** the progenitor of the so-called "Owl Attacks". eventually became the acting leader of the Aogiri Tree organization, after which became known more specifically as the "One-Eyed Owl".
*** After Yoshimura Sr. is defeated and captured, his kagune is harvested and implanted into a number of kidnapped Investigators, though only two of these end up surviving the process. These two are , designated as T-OWL, and , designated A-OWL. The former in particular becomes quite owl-like in his mannerisms and behaviour, often using his feet to attack, perching on high places and swooping down to pick off unsuspecting prey.
** Ghoul Investigator Kishou Arima has earned himself quite a few, being something of a living legend -- "Death God", "The Undefeated Investigator", "The Jack", and "CCG's Reaper".
** "Corpse Collector" Arata, The Indomitable Shinohara, and "Demon" Tsuneyoshi.
** Haise Sasaki of the sequel Re: eventually comes to be known as the Black Reaper, to contrast Arima's white color scheme (presumably, Arima would be called White Reaper to distinguish between them).
* Literature/TokyoRavens has the Divine Generals, with Child Prodigy Dairenji Suzuka, Omnipotent Sword Kogure Zenjirou, The Shadow Ohtomo Jin (who later gets upgraded to [[spoiler:White Yatagarasu]]), Ogre Eater Kagami Reiji, Divine Fan Amami Daizen, Enma/ Fire Demon Miyachi Iwao, Binding Princess Yuge Mari, Divine Eye Miyoshi Tougo, Heaven's Bearer Kurahashi Genji, The Professor Dairenji Shidou.
** Kakugyouki is also often referred to as the One-Armed Ogre.
* Manga/Trigun -- Vash the Stampede is such a WalkingDisasterArea that he gets dubbed the "Humanoid Typhoon" (and actually gets reclassified as an "Act of God" by the planet's biggest insurance company so it doesn't have to pay out damages incurred in connection with him).
** Tort law says WTF about that, by the way, and presumably they start offering Stampede Insurance packages, since the odds of Vash actually turning up and rescuing any particular location are low enough that with the right pitch they could make a killing. As long as the BigBad doesn't use him to blow up any more cities. And no one insures the moon.
** Other parties in the series have such names, noms-de-guerre at least, usually in the form of TheMagnificent, but most of them aren't especially widely feared, if only because they kill most people who hear about them. Manga Wolfwood appears to have possessed a certain cache in the Professional Killers community that earned him the name Nicholas the Punisher, but it's possible he was just assigned that title by his bosses. So it's just the HeroWithBadPublicity who's blood-chillingly notorious.
* In Anime/UmaMusume, several of the top racers have earned suitably badass titles. This includes Symboli "Emperor" Rodolf, Narita "Shadow Roll Monster" Brian, and "Super Car" Maruzensky.
* In Manga/VinlandSaga, most characters with nicknames simply add their epithets to their given name. The exception to this is Thors Snorresson, main character Thorfinn's father, who was simply known as "The Troll of Jom" without a name attached. Given that the Jomsvikings are the setting's main BadassArmy, the fact that they referred to him as "The Troll" implies they considered him extraordinary even by their standards.
* Manga/WitchCraftWorks: A schoolgirl who is secretly a member of the city-protecting witch circle gets introduced first as a delinquent trying to destroy the protagonist's position of power at his high-school. Her nickname is "Bearslayer", owing to the fact she killed a vicious rampaging predator with her bare hands on one occasion in the past. The animal was a large tiger, and the tiger's name was Lucky Bear.
* In Manga/TheWorldGodOnlyKnows, Keima is known to the DatingSim world as the "God of Conquest" for his unrivaled skill and knowledge in the genre.
* Anime/YuGiOhGX has two prominent examples, both of which get dropped in the English dub.
** Manjyome "Thunder", which stems from his CatchPhrase. Whenever anybody calls him "Manjyoume", he insists "It's Manjyome-san!" -- in Japanese, "Manjyome-san da!". Since that would be a real bear to adapt into English, the dub drops the whole thing in favor of him calling himself "The Chazz".
** "Kaiser" Ryo Marufuji, TheAce of the Academy in the first season, is rarely called by anything but his nickname. In the second season, he freaks out and the title upgrades to "Hell Kaiser" for the remainder of the series.
