John Oliver guest stars as Wilkes John Booth, a neighbor whom Marge has never met — and doesn't want to meet since Homer insulted them like he always does with new neighbors, but Marge reconsiders when Lisa decides to go friendless.

!! Tropes:
* BaitAndSwitch: at first, it seemed like the bullies' band "Ear Poison" was gonna play loud music, but then they play calm music.
* ButHeSoundsHandsome: To encourage Lisa to make friends, her parents hold a party for her and invite every kid she ever befriended. They give up when the only invitee who shows up is a boy she used to play soccer with. When Lisa sees and recognizes him, he denies being that boy but claims he'd like to because of how good he is as a soccer player.
* CatchPhraseInterruptus: After Homer and Marge get thrown out of the party...
-->'''Marge:''' I think it's time we learn to live with being ostracized.\
'''Homer:''' [[MadLibsCatchPhrase Mmm...]]\
'''Marge:''' [[LamePunReaction Don't you dare say "ostrich eyes"!]]
* ConvictionByCounterfactualClue: Bart finds it extremely weird that Muni would like ''anything'' that [[SoapboxSadie Lisa]] does, which leads to him investigating and finding out that she's being paid to pretend she does, which leads to him discovering that the one doing it is [[MyBelovedSmother Marge]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: Homer accidentally ruining a game leads Wilkes to smack him across the face.
* IAteWhat: Itchy forces Scratchy to serve cat meat to the cats that eat at their restaurant. The cats are disgusted once they're told that they ate other cats.
* JerkassBall:
** Homer is sorry about ruining Marge's chance to make friends ''only'' when Marge is looking. He is secretly very happy and obviously sees his wife giving up at making any friends as a good thing.
** Lisa has driven all of the other kids in Springfield away with her [[SoapboxSadie unrelenting drive to enforce her political views]], is perfectly okay with being [[LonersAreFreaks the town weirdo]], and ends up enjoying hurting her own mother emotionally (well, [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone maybe with a little reluctance]]).
* JerkassHasAPoint: While paying someone to be Lisa's friend was obviously wrong as Miss Hoover spells out Lisa is too insistent in forcing her classmates to accept her views and doesn't care to respect theirs. When the lie was revealed Tumi admits that she does like Lisa only for Lisa to abandon her the moment she reveals she eats horse meat.
* LonersAreFreaks: Played with. Homer and Marge (especially Marge) are horrified at the idea of Lisa being the school's loner, but Lisa [[InvokedTrope is perfectly okay with it]].
* MyBelovedSmother: All of the drama of the latter part of the episode is Lisa being pissed at the fact Marge paid a kid to pretend to like what Lisa loves and (falsely) become her friend.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: ZigZagged. When Marge secretly pays Lisa's friend to be her friend, she was outraged and wouldn't talk to her mother. When Marge was finally moved to tears, Lisa looked guilty for it. But in her head, she was secretly proud of it, but "now, all I want is for Mom to stop crying". And then, when she calms her mother down...
-->'''Lisa:''' It's funny, but hurting your feelings made me feel better.\
'''Marge:''' Hmm...try to forget that.
* OhCrap: Homer and Bart have this near the end of the episode when Lisa wishes Marge a Happy Mother's Day.
* SoapboxSadie: Lisa [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere abandons]] her chance at Muni actually being her friend for real when she finds out she eats horse meat. Her whole plot happens because she has alienated literally everybody in Springfield in her age range by constantly trying to shove her beliefs on them.
* ShoutOut: [[JustForFun/TheItchyAndScratchyShow The Itchy and Scratchy episode]] Bart watches features Scratchy as a chef and [[WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}} Itchy controls him like Remy does with Alfredo Linguini]].
* ShutUpKiss: Shauna gives one to Gil when he rambles about the past. It doesn't quite work.
-->'''Shauna:''' If I make out with you, will you shut up?\
'''Gil:''' Ah, give it a shot.
* WhatTheHellHero: Lisa is furious with Marge for paying somebody to pretend to be her friend, instead of her being allowed to make friends naturally (or just be on her own).
