* AdviceBackfire: Creed telling Andy to be more aggressive in his pursuit of Julia, and Pam offering to divert the lecture tour to Nashua after Michael talks about needing to find closure with Holly. Both situations turn out poorly for the advisee.
* TheBusCameBack: Creator/RashidaJones returns as Karen, who's still manager of the Utica branch.
* CallBack: Stanley [[Recap/TheOfficeUSS2E18TakeYourDaughterToWorkDay once again]] yells at someone sniffing around someone he brings to the office. Of course this time, it's a legal adult he's not related to, so he quickly stops caring.
* ComicallySmallBribe: Michael's mini Mounds bars for his audience at the Utica lecture.
* CounterfeitCash: Creed contributes a very fake-looking $3 bill to Kelly's birthday party fund.
* ElephantInTheLivingRoom: Defied by Micheal, much to everyone's annoyance, as he ''keeps bringing up'' how Karen is Jim's ex-lover no matter how much others try to diplomatically skirt around it.
* ForcefulKiss: Andy senses a romantic moment while he tries to close the deal with Julia.
-->'''Andy''': As one of my new clients, you will always be taken care of. And that is the Nard Dog guarantee.
-->'''Julia''': What’s a Nard Dog?
-->'''Andy''': This is the Nard Dog. (''He leans in to kiss her. She's repulsed'')
-->'''Julia''': Whoa! What the hell? (''He backs off in embarrassment'')
* ForgottenBirthday: The new "Party Planning Committee" (an extremely reluctant Jim and Dwight) start off by forgetting Kelly's birthday. She's very unhappy about it.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Michael is in rare form for this throughout the episode. He makes crude comments about Karen's pregnancy, and also annoys Pam by implying that Jim might be the father. He also reveals his mnemonic device to remember people's names: pick out something unflattering about their looks, then come up with a long trail of connections to the first letter of their first name.
* MomentKiller: A non-romantic version. Pam meets Karen again and is happy to hear she found love after Jim, with the two of them finally burying the hatchet. Then Micheal interrupts to give a melodramatic monologue about old hatreds turning into new friendships, leaving the two women in awkward silence again.
* ShoutOut: Michael holds a chainsaw for the [[Film/TheTexasChainsawMassacre Utica Chain Store Massacre]].
* SmallNameBigEgo: Kelly's big moment of this.
-->'''Kelly''': My birthday was yesterday, and everybody forgot. I got really dressed up and excited, and no one said a word. There wasn’t even a party. I think sometimes people are really mean to the hot, popular girl.
* WhamEpisode:
** Karen is married! And pregnant!
** Also, Michael begins his quest to rekindle his relationship with Holly.
