Context Recap / TheFlash2014S3E6Shade

Go To

Dr. Alchemy finally comes for Wally West, while Caitlin searches for alternate solutions to her power problem.
-----

* AffablyEvil: Alchemy speaks in a warm, almost fatherly voice when he greets Wally.
* AmbiguousSituation: The vision Cisco sees of him fighting against Caitlin as Killer Frost offers no context as to which party, if any, is actually villainous, but Cisco automatically assumes the worst given what Caitlin has disclosed to him.
* AngerBornOfWorry: The reason Joe doesn't want Wally to become a speedster is not that he doesn't trust him, it's because of how he will receive those powers.
* ArtisticLicensePhysics: Shade can become like a LivingShadow, including flattening into the ground, through molecular vibration but the process is still somehow disrupted by intense light.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: The episode once again focuses on Caitlin being completely helpless while becoming a supervillain.
* BadVibrations: Savitar's arrival is so powerful that his speed causes an earthquake.
* BigBadDuumvirate: Dr. Alchemy is working with Savitar. How the relationship works is unclear.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Wally briefly gets possessed by Alchemy and attacks Iris, causing her to knock him out. At the end, this causes him to pick up Alchemy's stone and become wrapped in some kind of cocoon, presumably to get his powers.
* ChekhovsGun: H.R. shows the team a facial transmogrification device he brought from Earth-19. It comes in handy for in a later episode.
* Cliffhanger: Wally gets cocooned and is about to receive his powers, while Savitar is about to finish off Barry.
* ContinuityNod: Grodd is mentioned. Apparently, he has a doppelganger on Earth-19.
* CovertPervert: When Cisco accuses H.R. of stealing his cuffs, he dismissively states that he doesn't know a woman on this Earth well enough to already be at the "cuff state."
* Cult: It was hinted at in his first appearance, but Alchemy seems to have one that follows him. Granted Savitar is working with him so it's likely that it might be HIS cult that Alchemy is working with.
* DamselOutOfDistress: Alchemy begins to take control of Wally again, after Iris runs to help him, he goes to attack her, and she immediately knock him out with a right hook.
* DeathGlare: It's subtle, but Caitlin gives Barry one after he blames himself for her transformation into Killer Frost.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Caitlin's keeping her powers to herself and swearing Cisco to privacy when he finds out comes off like someone diagnosed with a terminal illness keeping it from their loved ones.
* DumbassHasAPoint:
** While dumbass might be stretching things a little, H.R. hasn't really contributed much to Team Flash yet. This time however, he comes up with the idea of locking Wally up to ensure his own safety until they come up with a better solution and the team agrees with it.
** Also no one can deny the fact H.R. makes when he says that it's only a matter of time before someone realizes that STAR Labs and its remaining crew are working with the Flash.
* FictionalCurrency: H.R. flashes some Earth-19 money, which is a bunch of metal triangles.
* FireForgedFriends: Averted. Despite Julian becoming a little warmer thanks to him and Barry resolving a troublesome situation together, he still makes it clear that they are not instantly best friends.
* Foreshadowing: Joe rather blatantly makes a point about Julian not being present and how utterly out of character that is for him as they're gearing up to go after Alchemy.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: H.R. stills gets on everybody's nerves, especially on Joe's during his date with Cecile.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: When H.R. reveals his facial disguising device to the rest of Team Flash, Barry couldn't help but geek out.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: All the titular Meta does is attack people, nothing is really known about who he is. Not even his name is revealed. Partially justified in that Alchemy sent Shade as a distraction to draw Team Flash away from his real target, Wally.
* AGodAmI: Savitar refers to himself as the "god of speed." Given the truly impressive speeds he can reach (to the point that he is effectively invisible to anyone but Barry -- when standing still -- and causes a ground tremor upon arrival), it's hard to argue with him.
* HopeSpot: Barry, backed up by Joe and the CCPD, captures Alchemy before he can give Wally powers...then Savitar shows up, and in the chaos, Wally grabs the Philosopher's Stone and is placed into some kind of chrysalis.
* HumanoidAbomination: Savitar looks even less human than Zoom did.
* Hypocrite: Cisco scolds Caitlin for trying to keep her powers a secret from the team, despite trying to keep her becoming Killer Frost in the future a secret from her.
** There's also the fact that he spent much of last season hiding his own powers from the team, until Harry did the same thing he did to Caitlin and outed him.
* IgnoredExpert: At first, Wally doesn't care about anybody (including his father and Barry) telling him to stop trying to get powers, because he so desperately wants to become a speedster.
* InternalReveal:
** Barry tells everyone that Wally was Kid Flash in the "Flashpoint" timeline.
** Team Flash finally learns that Caitlin is slowly turning into Killer Frost.
** H.R. learns about the fact that he is a wanted murderer on this Earth, thanks to Eobard Thawne.
* InvisibleToNormals: Barry seems to be the only one who can see Savitar.
* ItsAllMyFault: Barry blames Caitlin's powers, and Alchemy going after Wally, on his messing with time.
* KnightOfCerebus: Things get darker when Savitar shows up.
* LivingShadow: The titular villain is a Meta who can turn into a shadow. Trope, as it turns out he's just vibrating at such a high frequency that it looks like he's a shadow.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Attempted very briefly by Cisco by not telling Caitlin the truth about his vision.
* TheLoad: Iris feels like that she isn't contributing anything to Team Flash at all other than being Barry's girlfriend. Barry instantly assures to her that without her, he couldn't carry on.
* MythologyGag: H.R. proposes to Caitlin and Cisco that they turn STAR Labs (or, at least a part of it) into a museum. One of the most iconic locations in the Flash comics is, of course, the Flash Museum.
* NeckSnap: Shade's first victim is offed by strangulation. There was a very audible snapping sound.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Before the Special Unit is about to go after Alchemy, Joe and Barry notice that Julian hasn't come to work today, which has never happened before.
* OverlyLongGag: Cisco explains the method of beating the Shade on-the-fly to H.R., and the latter can only punctuate Cisco's statements with Yes, repeatedly.
* PlotArmor: Once again, only the unnamed SWAT officers get killed by the evil speedster and the main characters get spared.
* PowerNullifier: Cisco has developed a set of cuffs that when worn can cancel out a metahuman's powers.
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Wally accuses Joe of glossing over Barry's screw-ups and still trusting him more to be a speedster than Wally himself. Also doubles with ParentalFavoritism.
* RankUp: Barry gets back his old position as a result of the growing "Husk" situation.
* RedHerring: The Shade's antics are all just a ploy by Alchemy in order to divide Team Flash's attention, allowing him to better get to Wally.
* TheReveal: The metahuman who killed the Rival for failing Alchemy is Savitar, the AGodAmI supposed God of Speed...and he's got the powers to back it up.
* ScrewDestiny: Cisco encourages Caitlin not to believe in his dark vision.
* ShipperOnDeck: The entirety of Team Flash is all for Joe and DA Cecile. Barry, Iris and Wally all push him to go on the date despite the crisis with Wally, with Iris and Barry stating they'll look after Wally, and to ensure he has no more excuse, Caitlin and Cisco, and H.R., agree to accompany him on the group date to relieve the tension.
* ShipTease: Joe and Cecile go on a date, which gets ruined by Shade, but mostly by H.R.
* ShoutOut:
** When he learns the new meta is a LivingShadow, Julian snidely remarks if it's a refugee from Neverland.
** Danger erupts at an outdoor theater showing Film/TheShining, just like in Film/Twister.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Barry mocks how Shade won't be able to catch his shadow, only to quickly find out that he is more than able to do so.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Shade gets defeated by...car headlights.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Caitlin is not happy when Cisco forces her to tell the rest of the team about her powers before she was ready.
** It's subtle, but Caitlin is also clearly not happy to learn that her powers might be the result of Flashpoint.
** On a lighter note, H.R. is not amused that the team waited so long to tell him that he shares a (stolen) face with a known murderer.
* YouCantFightFate: Cisco's vision seems to confirm that Caitlin is doomed to become Killer Frost and turn against her surrogate family, though he points out his vision of Earth-2's destruction never came true.
