!Good God, Y'All

->'''War:''' Save your protests for your brother. I can see inside your head, and man, it is one-track city in there: blood, blood, blood. Lust. For power. Same as always. You want to be strong again. But not just strong; stronger than everybody. Good intentions. Quick slide to hell, buddy-boy. You feel bad now? Wait 'till you're thigh-deep in warm corpses. 'Cause my friend, I'm just getting started. Showtime for the meatsuits.

Bobby is still in the hospital and quite bitter about being in a wheelchair. When Castiel arrives, Bobby orders him to heal him, but Castiel says he's been cut off from Heaven. He tells Dean that he wants to find God, the only one who can defeat Lucifer. Castiel borrows Dean's pendant, which has the ability to indicate God's presence by glowing brightly. Suddenly, Bobby receives a frantic call from his hunter friend Rufus, who is in a town swarming with demons. Sam and Dean go to the town and can't find Rufus, but instead find Ellen Harvelle. She and Jo have been hunting together and Jo has disappeared like Rufus. When they do find Jo and Rufus, they appear to be possessed by demons--but, strangely, they seem to think Sam, Dean, and the others are the ones possessed. In fact, there are no demons at all. They are instead hallucinations brought about by War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Sam and Dean hunt him down and cut off his ring finger, because his ring controls the hallucinations. In the end, Sam tells Dean he thinks that they should go their separate ways, and they part.

!Tropes
* ActionGirl: Jo and Ellen.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: War is a middle aged, mobster type who drives a blood-red muscle car.
* BigBad: The town is revealed to be plagued by War, as in the horseman, who has tricked the citizens into seeing each other as demons.
* BreakingTheFellowship: At the end of this episode, Sam and Dean go their separate ways.
* TheBusCameBack: Nice to see you again, Harvelles, Rufus!
* CallingOutForNotCalling: Ellen reams Dean out for not bothering to pick up a phone and [[TeamMom let her know how the boys were doing]].
* CoolCar: War's red 1965 Mustang. Even Dean is impressed.
* DemonicPossession: {{Subverted|Trope}}. It's an hallucination caused by War.
* DeusExMachina: It's finally revealed that God brought [[Recap/SupernaturalS05E01SympathyForTheDevil Cas back and put Sam and Dean on that plane]].
* FallenAngel: Castiel's been cut off from Heaven. As a result, he's lost some of his powers and is running on limited energy.
* {{Fingore}}: Dean and Sam don't know how to kill War, so they just chop off enough fingers to separate him from his hallucination-causing ring.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The absence of the demon killing glow effect from Ruby's knife when Sam kills the teenagers directly hints toward the fact that there are no demons.
* HaveYouSeenMyGod: Castiel's going to search for God.
* HealingHands: {{Averted|Trope}}. Cas can no longer heal as he's been cut off from Heaven.
* HorsemenOfTheApocalypse: War.
* LeftTheBackgroundMusicOn: "Spirit in the Sky" plays as Sam and Dean warily enter town -- eventually the song is revealed to be coming from an abandoned car's radio.
* MoreThanMindControl: As part of his HumansAreBastards speech War tells Sam that it really didn't take much to make the people of the town turn on each other. A destroyed bridge here, some poison water there, and some black eyes and the entire town is lining up to murder each other.
* MundaneSolution: Castiel branded Dean and Sam with Enochian sigils that prevent angels from locating them. This also includes ''him'', unfortunately, so he solves this problem by buying a cellphone so that he can call Dean and find out where they are. And ''then'' teleport there.
* PistolWhipping
* PlayingBothSides: "Roger" is part of both groups and is manipulating them from within thanks to his hallucinogenic ring to cause the survivors to kill each other.
* PlotDeviceAllAlong: The amulet that Dean wears around his neck that he got from Sam at Christmas is revealed to be a talisman that can help Castiel find God.
* SarcasmBlind: Cas, [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments leading to this great exchange]].
-->'''Dean:''' Try New Mexico. I hear He's on a tortilla.
-->'''Castiel:''' ''[confused]'' No, he's not on any flatbread.
* TitledAfterTheSong: From Edwin Starr's "War", aptly enough.
