''Enterprise'' is on its way to meet with the Xindi council, while taking time to mourn the eighteen people who died in the Xindi attack. Then, in the ready room, Trip reveals that two missing crew members, Jane Taylor and Kamata, have been found, but they're both dead. T'Pol reports that the weapons are online and hull plating is at 80%. Archer assigns Trip to write a letter to Taylor's parents (which Trip is unhappy with), and T'Pol goes to see Phlox for her addiction. He finds barely any trellium-D in her system and reassures her that she will be able to deal with the side effects.

The ship arrives at the rendezvous, but no one's around, and then the ''Enterprise'' gets hit with an anomaly. Degra appears and leads them to a Sphere, where he then invites Archer aboard his ship. On Degra's ship, he and Jannar reveal that they planned to return him to his ship and away from the Reptilians. Jannar wants more proof, which Archer agrees to show him on the ''Enterprise'', provided the weapon isn't deployed. T'Pol finds Trip trying to write his letter in the mess hall and tells him to catch up on sleep. Then, there is an explosion and they both shut down the damaged systems and summon Phlox. Unbeknown to them, the hull has started to leak atmosphere.

Archer tries to persuade Degra and Jannar that the Sphere-Builders are misleading the Xindi, showing them the bodies of the Xindi-Reptillians who were killed back in "Carpenter Street", but Jannar points out that just because they were killed doesn't mean time travel was involved. Archer shows them the bio-weapon and offers them to analyse it, but Jannar still doesn't see it as proof, so Archer leads them away.

Meanwhile, Phlox has heard about Trip's sleep deprivation and orders him to bed. Trip goes to bed and dreams about Taylor yelling at him for not writing the letter. Archer and Phlox then show Degra and Jannar the scans of the Xindi test subject they rescued a few months ago. They reveal that the cellular degradation comes from its having evolved in a dimension with different laws of physics, and the Spheres are designed to reshape space to make it better suited for the aliens, but unsuitable for humans and other humanoids, so they must form an alliance to stop them.

On Degra's ship, he and Jannar discuss Archer's findings, with Jannar noting that the chronometric distortions may have been faked and warning Degra not to let his doubts about launching the weapon cloud his judgment. In the command centre, Trip tries to fix the equipment, while T'Pol explains the data reconstruction to Degra. Trip then starts to rant at Degra, so Archer comes in and takes him away, leaving Trip and T'Pol to finish the repairs.

Meanwhile, the crack in the hull has been growing and ruptures an EPS conduit, so Trip and Malcolm go out in EV suits to fix it, with Archer overhearing the communications and Degra observing. They set to work, but Malcolm is stationed near the leaking plasma and thus nearly dies of heatstroke. He is rushed to sickbay, and when Degra hopes that he survives, Trip yells at him and accuses him of hypocrisy, since the Xindi killed seven million people.

Archer escorts Degra to the command centre to show him information they gathered on the spheres, also apologising for Trip's behaviour. Archer shows Degra the scans, which impresses him, then Degra says it's a surprising amount of information for a warship to have collected. Archer says that ''Enterprise'' was initially a ship of exploration, to which Degra says it will be again if they succeed.

Trip starts to work on his letter, when a tactical alert sounds-- Xindi-Reptillians have followed Degra to the Sphere. The captain contacts Jannar and demands that they undock with the ''Enterprise'', so Degra decides to talk to Archer. Archer begs for information that would help them fight the Reptillian ship, but Degra has reservations about attacking his own kind. Degra's ship eventually leaves ''Enterprise'' but attacks in conjunction with it, eventually ending with Degra destroying the Reptillian ship (since he believes letting them survive would lead to them reporting Archer and Degra).

T'Pol gives Trip some power cells from Degra, but he refuses help from him and starts ranting and crying about how Elizabeth died at such a young age. He claims to be jealous of Vulcans for not having emotions, but she says that Vulcans do ''have'' emotions; they just suppress them. Degra then convinces Archer to present his evidence to the Council, while Trip writes his letter.

!! Tropes in this episode include:

* AgentScully: Jannar, who's heavily skeptical when he views Archer's evidence. He admits that it's intriguing, but not enough to convince him.
* TheAtoner: Degra starts on this path, helped by how he has to work with a family member of one of his seven million victims.
* TheCameo: Creator/SethMacFarlane (yes, him) gets an ass-chewing by an exhausted Trip.
* ContinuityNod: ''Enterprise'' depends heavily on all the data and clues they've collected over the last several months in order to convince Degra.
* DeadPersonConversation: Trip has one with Taylor in a dream.
* DueToTheDead: Archer gives a speech to the surviving crew in the launch bay, dedicated to the eighteen crewmen they lost at Azati Prime.
-->"We're in bad shape, I can't deny that, but we're still in one piece. ''Enterprise'' is a tough ship. She took more than anyone could ask her to and then some, and so have all of you. I wanted to say thank you. I only wish I could thank the eighteen crewmen who were lost. Like you, they understood how important our mission is and they accepted the risks. We came into the Expanse not knowing what we'd find, with no one to rely on but ourselves, but we're going to succeed, to accomplish our mission, for everyone on Earth who's relying on us, and for the eighteen."
* DoYouWantToHaggle: Phlox orders Trip to get some sleep after being up for days on end fixing the ship is taking a toll on him. Trip doesn't want to sleep on account of him being needed if another catastrophe happens. They end up haggling on how much sleep he gets before settling on four hours.
* HonestJohnsDealership: Referenced by Trip after the above example.
-->"Deal. And remind me never to buy a used car from you."
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Degra destroys a Reptilian scout ship in order to preserve their secret meeting.
* ManlyTears: Trip finally breaks down from losing Elizabeth.
* NightmareSequence: Trip is shown having a nightmare in which Taylor yells at him and chases him for not completing his letter to her parents.
* NoOSHACompliance: Somehow, the manual shutoff valves for the plasma stream are ''outside'' the ship.
* PosthumousCharacter: Taylor only appears in a dream that Trip has.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Degra is persuaded a bit more easily than Jannar.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Trip verbally lays into Degra twice for the Xindi's devastating attack on Earth before T'Pol and Archer order him to stand down. Degra doesn't even bother attempting to defend himself from Trip's barbs.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Trip is asked to dictate a letter to Taylor's parents regarding her death, but even he can't remember much about her.
* RuleOfThree: It takes Trip three tries to word the letter to Taylor's parents the way he wants it.
* ShoutOut: Trip says that it would have taken a thousand ships like ''Enterprise'' to destroy a planet, a line which appeared in ''Film/ANewHope''.
* SleepDeprivation: Apparently, Trip went two nights without sleep.
* TantrumThrowing: Trip kicks a case of Xindi power cells across a corridor while still mourning Taylor's death.
* TemptingFate: After dealing with an explosion on E Deck, Trip says it's a good thing he wasn't taking a nap. It then cuts to the external hull, showing a plasma leak.
* ThatsAnOrder: When Malcolm starts getting baked from being too close to the plasma fire, Archer orders him to get back inside the ship. Malcolm responds by claiming that [[FakeStatic Archer's breaking up]].
