3	This episode is sort of a sequel to the ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' two-parter [[Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS5E7Unification1 "Unification I"]] and [[Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS5E8Unification2 "Unification II"]].

5	The efforts of Ambassador Spock (Creator/LeonardNimoy) centuries ago have paid off: Vulcans and Romulans are reunited, and the Vulcan homeworld has been renamed Ni'Var. Unfortunately, Ni'Var blames the Federation for "the Burn", the planet has seceded from the Federation.

7	Dilithium supplies were running scarce even before "the Burn". The Federation ordered member worlds to research alternatives. Ni'Var had a project code-named SB-19, which they later wanted to cancel, but the Federation refused. So on Ni'Var, everyone believes SB-19 caused "the Burn".

9	Commander Michael Burnham now has evidence that SB-19 did not cause "the Burn". Admiral Vance (Creator/OdedFehr) sends the USS Discovery to Ni'Var to explain her findings. Ni'Var President T'Rina (Creator/TaraRosling) refuses to share the SB-19 data and urges Discovery to leave.

11	Burnham invokes her right to t'kal-in-ket, which is sort of like a cross between an academic dissertation defense and a criminal trial. T'Rina can't refuse, so a "quorum" is convened aboard the ship. But there's the risk that Burnham could come across as dishonest, and thus tarnish Ambassador Spock's legacy.

13	A woman from the Qowat Milat order will come aboard as Burnham's advocate in the t'kal-in-ket. That woman turns out to be Gabrielle Burnham (Creator/SonjaSohn), Michael's mother.

15	The t'kal-in-ket does not seem to be going well, with the three panelists deadlocking on whether or not to allow Michael to access to the SB-19 data. And worse, Gabrielle seems to turn on her own daughter. Despite the panel's reticence, T'Rina gives Michael the SB-19 data.

17	Meanwhile, Captain Saru offers Ensign Tilly the position of first officer. After much hesitation, Tilly accepts.

Tilly notes that a triangulation of the Burn's origin based on the three black boxes would only give its location in two dimensions, leaving a wide arc above or below that point that would take several lifetimes to search. The SB-19 data would allow them to narrow down the search to a specific location.

Only the audience knows, of course, that Picard became just as much a legendary Starfleet officer as Spock (and that, like Spock, he too played an important role in the eventual reunification of the Romulans and Vulcans).

62	* SadisticChoice: If Burnham fails at the ''T'Kal-in-ket'', not only will she not get critical data about the Burn, but she will blacken Spock's legacy. But, as she watches the three members of the quorum argue, if she ''wins'', she gets the data at the expense of undoing all of her foster brother's lifelong work. She chooses to TakeAThirdOption and withdraw the challenge, choosing TheNeedsOfTheMany. The quorum never comes to a consensus; the president delivers her the data, believing that the Federation can be trusted.
