Context Recap / MashS3E6Springtime

Go To

Hawkeye and Trapper come out of a long gruelling session of operating on wounded soldiers to find that, for once, they are greeted with a beautiful and warm spring day. Yes, spring and all that comes with it. Love is in the air. Radar falls head over heels for brainy nurse Lieutenant Simmons. Frank and Margaret have a date in the field. Henry takes some time off to play golf. And Klinger gets a letter from his fiancee back home with an agreement to finally marry him.

On the other side of things, an unidentified, shell-shocked soldier grows attached to a stray cat and another soldier pledges to serve Hawkeye after the doctor saves him.

----
!!Attention, all hands! Come the dawn of spring, a young man's fancy turns to the thoughts of tropes:
* AnachronismStew: We're told the film being screened for the camp's Movie Night is ''The Firstborn of Godzilla''. The first movie featuring offspring of the famous kaiju, ''Film/SonOfGodzilla'', did not come out until 1967.
** Radar also claims to have seen [[Film/Godzilla1954 the original film]] already. This would be impossible, as it wasn't released until over a year after the Korean War ended (and [[Film/GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters1956 the version seen by American audiences]] didn't come out until 1956).
* AndImTheQueenOfSheba: Henry heavily doubts that Klinger will keep to his promise of coming back to Korea after his wedding and honeymoon.
--> '''Klinger''': Sir. I only want a small, quick, little wedding, in Toledo, then a teeny tiny one-two-three honeymoon. Then I'll be right back.
--> '''Henry''': Anyone who believes that, stand on their head.
--> '''Klinger''': You saying I'm lying, sir?
--> '''Henry''': I'm saying you're so desperate to get out of Korea, you'd have yourself buried, with a soda straw through the coffin so you could breathe.
* BigShutUp: Frank insults Hawkeye and complains about the goings-on at the hospital with this, while in the presence of Lyle Wesson.
--> '''Frank''': Oh, who are you ordering about, Mr. Sassing-A-Major-Pants?
--> '''Wesson''': I thought the doc told you to be quiet!
--> '''Hawkeye''': It's all right, Lyle. He never obeys my commands.
--> '''Frank''': What a report this is going to make. That pervert marrying no one, a cat living in the hospital, and this idiot insubordinating his big mouth whenever he pleases.
--> '''Hawkeye''': Uh, Frank, I wouldn't...
--> '''Frank''': Oh, shut up!
--> '''Wesson''': [[RageBreakingPoint That's]] [[PreAssKickingOneLiner it!]]
* BlatantLies: Hawkeye uses this to get himself out of Wesson's LifeDebt after the usual solution of ending the debt (saving the original rescuer's life) fails.
* CuteBookworm: Lieutenant Simmons really loves poetry.
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Radar brings Hawkeye and Trapper the coffee they had ordered. It's late.
---> '''Radar''': Here's the coffee you sirs ordered, sirs.
---> '''Trapper''': You're a little late, Radar. We ordered it last winter.
---> '''Hawkeye''': Give him time. He takes baby steps. Save mine, and take my beautiful day - I'm having it later.
** After Hawkeye and Trapper watch Wesson threaten two soldiers to vacate the table for them, Hawkeye nervously mentions they've got to get their food first.
---> '''Trapper''': Don't say that. He'll skewer the cook.
** Radar asks Hawkeye and Trapper if they can recall Lieutenant Simmons.
---> '''Trapper''': Simmons? Uh? Short, freckles, frat glasses?
---> '''Hawkeye''': I can't understand how you lost your job at the State Department.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Radar, carrying a tray of coffee across the compound, stops in his tracks when he catches sight of Lieutenant Simmons sunbathing.
* DoubleTake: Margaret and Frank believe they're alone out on the field until Margaret takes a look down the hill and sees a woman reading a book. [[BaitAndSwitch Oh wait,]] [[HilarityEnsues it's Klinger]].
* EroticDream: Hawkeye refers to having one of these after Father Mulcahy had to wake him about a problem that's going on in post-op.
--> '''Father Mulcahy''': Sorry I had to wake you.
--> '''Hawkeye''': That's all right, Father. The nurse I was dreaming was a rerun anyway.
* {{Fanservice}}: Lieutenant Simmons sunbathes out in the open.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: As Radar is reading the poetry book Klinger dropped, the latter is dancing and whooping for joy over the field behind him.
* FuzzTherapy: The cat held by the PTSD-stricken soldier Hawkeye encounters.
* GoshDangItToHeck: The wedding is halted when the radio connection gets interference.
--> '''Henry''': Oh fishhooks.
* GreenEyedMonster: Frank turns into this when [[ShipTease Hawkeye pays Margaret a romantic compliment]].
--> '''Hawkeye''': You're angry when you're beautiful.
--> '''Frank''': Listen, beak nose!
* HiddenDepths: Henry Blake operates and arranges radio connections all without Radar's help.
* HopelessSuitor: Radar thinks he is this for Lieutenant Simmons. Well, either that or Lieutenant Simmons is ObliviousToLove.
** Averted later when Radar discovers to his surprise Simmons has wanted him all along.
* HulkSpeak: At the end of the episode, Hawkeye finally points out to Wesson that he's got to stop handling things so aggressively.
--> '''Hawkeye''': Lyle, you've got to stop doing things like that. It puts people off.
--> '''Wesson''': Yeah you're right, doc. I'm always doing the wrong thing. I'm sorry.
--> '''Hawkeye''': That's okay. You're a big person. You deserve bigger mistakes.
--> '''Wesson''': No, Lyle bad person. Does bad things.
--> '''Hawkeye''': No you're not. Lyle good, Hawkeye bad.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: Lyle Wesson will use these to pressure everyone so he can do Hawkeye favours for saving his life.
--> '''Wesson''': Two with everything.
--> '''Igor''': I'm busy, fella.
--> '''Wesson''': No, no, no. I said "Two with everything". . . now.
--> ''Igor looks up with a very clear OhCrap expression''
--> '''Igor''': Everything is just what you're going to get.
* IOweYouMyLife: Lyle Wesson is incredibly grateful that Hawkeye saved his life and promises the doctor he will return the favour.
* JawDrop: Margaret, after Trapper simply tells her to shut up when she is trying to put a stop to Klinger's wedding.
--> '''Margaret''': Did you hear that [Frank]?
--> '''Frank''': I most certainly did. [''beat''] Are you going to let him talk to you that way?
* {{Jerkass}}: Frank Burns continues to hold the opinion that shell-shock is not a real thing and accuses the soldier holding desperately onto a cat he has grown attached to of just simply bucking for a Section Eight.
--> '''Hawkeye''': Showing off for the patients again, Frank?
--> '''Frank''': Patient? Ha. He's not sick. Just another one of those crybabies who's afraid to go back to the front.
--> '''Hawkeye''': Frank, can I borrow your doctor's diploma? They're a little short in the latrines.
* LampshadeHanging:
** Trapper cannot believe that Mother Nature has allowed the camp to experience a perfect spring day. Hawkeye is less than impressed.
---> '''Trapper''': Hey. Do you believe? Someone has actually ordered us a genuine spring day.
---> '''Hawkeye''': What a dirty rotten trick to put in the middle of a war.
---> '''Trapper''': I'm gonna put that sky on hold.
---> '''Hawkeye''': That's just a mural painted by the North Koreans to catch us off our guard.
** Hawkeye chooses to comment on how Lyle Wesson will claim to be at his beck and call.
--> '''Hawkeye''': "Dear Dad, I'm bringing home a marine. He'll be the son you never had."
* MotorMouth: Father Mulcahy has to speak the final piece of the wedding ceremony fast in fear of losing the radio connection again once it's been re-established.
* TheNeedsOfTheMany: Sickeningly discussed between Frank and Margaret in an [[InvertedTrope inversed manner]].
--> '''Frank''': Funny thing, war. Never have so many suffered so much so so few could be so happy.
--> '''Margaret''': Frank, we're so lucky to be two of the few and not the many.
--> '''Frank''': I know, darling, and I love being both of us.
* OhCrap: When Wesson asks two guys in the mess tent if they were just about done with their meals and they say no, he [[ImpliedDeathThreat politely reminds them about good table manners]] and the two realise they were talking to a marine.
--> '''Wesson''': You boys about done?
--> '''Soldier''': Nope.
--> '''Wesson''': You know my mom always told me to leave the table a little hungry. That way you don't feel so stuffed, right?
--> '''Soldier''': Yeah, Right.
* SayMyName: Henry is about to take a swing at a golf ball when a jubilant Klinger comes up to him, which results in throwing him off his game.
--> '''Klinger''': Colonel Blake!
* SheCleansUpNicely: Radar did not notice how attractive a woman Lieutenant Simmons is until she enjoys the spring day by sunbathing. Justified, as he hadn't seen her in anything other than a bulky parka until then.
* ShoutOut: Klinger and Radar each read excerpts aloud from a book of poetry by Rupert Brooke.
** When Henry asks Klinger if his girlfriend Laverne has seen him recently (in other words, him wearing dresses), Klinger tells him not to be ridiculous.
--> '''Henry''': Me? You're the one who looks like he just blew out of ''Film/GoneWithTheWind''.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Margaret Houlihan demands that Klinger's wedding be stopped immediately.
--> '''Trapper''': Oh shut up, [[MomentKiller Major]].
* SpecialGuest: Alex Karras as Lyle Wesson.
* TakeAThirdOption: Henry won't allow Klinger temporary leave to go home and get married but naturally, neither can Laverne and the wedding come to Korea. So Henry decides to help Klinger out by setting up a few connections so the ceremony can be done via radio. Klinger thinks it would have been much simpler to just let him go home.
--> '''Henry''': If I let you go home, Klinger, the next time I see you, you'd be a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall.
* WartimeWedding: Klinger marries his [[HighSchoolSweethearts longtime sweetheart]], Laverne Esposito.
