Liv investigates the death of a former sorority-mate in what appears to be a skydiving accident.

* ChekhovsGun: The Max Rager energy drink. At first, it's simply backgrounded for the VictimOfTheWeek, but a throwaway line about reports of its drinkers going psychotic later ties into the Utopium plot to show that an ingredient is also responsible for the zombie virus.
* CurbstompBattle: Major's on the receiving end of one after fighting one of Blaine's goons.
* DownerEnding: The killer gets away. Though later in the season, "Mr. Berserker" implies she was actually killed by Sebastian to tie up loose ends.
* FoodPorn:
** At the beginning of the episode, Liv talks to Ravi about how seeing an egg salad sandwich on TV inspired her to try to make a brain salad sandwich. After she calls it a work in progress, the two indulge in some food-themed Grissom-style GallowsHumor about the VictimOfTheWeek.
** Foreshadowing Clive's boss is on a new diet, and talks about looking at pictures of all the food he can't eat now. He outright calls it porn.
** And finally, Liv's new zombie paramour gifts her with a bottle of BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce in lieu of chocolates, and describes in loving detail the anticipated effects of the condiment.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: The VictimOfTheWeek.
* MoodWhiplash: Right after the abovementioned GallowsHumor, Liv gets a phone call about someone she used to know dying in a skydiving accident.
* TheReveal: One of the suspects turns out to be a zombie, as does Clive's boss.
* ShoutOut:
** Title is a shout-out to the Romero's movie Film/NightOfTheLivingDead1968.
** Ravi name-drops Keyser Soze.
** Carson mentions Tony Soprano
** Film/WarmBodies is mentioned when Liv is talking with a suspect.
** There's mention of a homeless man constantly shouting "Are we having fun yet?", the desperate catchphrase of Rob Thomas's other show Series/PartyDown.
** Seattle PD uses a dry-erase board with open homicide cases in red, just like the Baltimore PD in Series/HomicideLifeOnTheStreet.
* WhamEpisode: Liv encounters a third zombie during her investigation. Even Wham-ier, it's looking like Clive's boss might be one too, as he is seen pouring hot sauce in his coffee (large quantities of hot sauce are needed for zombies to taste their food), and has been complaining about his "new diet" and all the food he can no longer eat (or perhaps taste properly). Earlier he is seen clipping his fingernails; in an earlier scene, Lowell mentions that one of the things that tipped him off about Liv being a zombie was that her nails were clipped short, something that must be done on a regular basis in order to prevent accidentally scratching and infecting someone.
* WhamShot: Clive brings up to his lieutenant that missing persons cases have tripled in the past six months, but the lieutenant angrily tells him to stick to his work as a homicide detective. After he leaves, the lieutenant then reaches into his desk drawer - and takes out a bottle of hot sauce, which he pours into his coffee, revealing that he is a zombie.
