The Piccolo Jr. arc is the seventh and final story arc of the Manga/DragonBall series.

!!Short Summary

After Piccolo's defeat, Goku is requested to go to Korin's tower as Kami wishes to see him. After passing his test, Kami reveals that before Piccolo died, he spat out an egg which carries his last offspring and wishes to train Goku for their inevitable confrontation. Three years pass and Goku meets up with his friends for the latest martial arts tournament. Sure enough, Piccolo Jr. is there ready to exact his revenge against Goku. However, there are some other opponents who want a piece of Goku as well.

!!Main Summary

Yajirobe takes Goku back to Korin’s tower, and there, they discuss on what to do next. While Piccolo is destroyed, his victims are still dead, and no Dragon God to revive them. Yajirobe, while sympathetic, tries to tell Goku that the death of a loved one is just something everyone has to deal with. However, Korin worries that those killed by demons will never pass on to the afterlife.\

And then Korin gets an idea. There IS one person who can fix things...God/Kami. Goku is confused and Yajirobe skeptical, so Korin explains. Kami lives in a palace that floats high above the Tower. The Flying Nimbus can't reach it, and anyone trying to use a rocket would be repelled by a mysterious force. The only way up is...the Power Pole, Goku's extending staff! It had originally belonged to Korin, but he gave it to Roshi, who in turn passed it down to Son Gohan, Goku's adoptive grandfather. After a brief sojourn back to the surface to retrieve it, Goku prepares to ascend to Kami's palace. Before leaving, Korin gives Goku two things; first is a bell signifying him as Korin's chosen, and second is an advice to not be shocked by Kami's face. Apparently, it's one Goku knows quite well...\

Goku stretched the pole to its maximum, and reaches Kami's floating castle. There, he meets Kami's attendent, a genie named Mr. Popo. Mr. Popo acknowledges that Goku has Korin's approval, but explains that Goku must pass one more test; a match against Mr. Popo in combat. Goku tries his best, but can't overcome Popo's discipline. Not to be deterred, Goku decides to train until he can become strong enough to prevail. Approving of Goku's determination, Kami himself decides to come out and face Goku. When he comes out, Goku is shocked to see none other than Piccolo!\

After Kami rebuffs Goku's attack, he explains. He was once the student of the previous God, but before he could take the mantle, he had to purify himself of the latent evil lurking within him. Expelling that evil resulted in Demon King Piccolo being born, which is why they look alike. Kami reveals that while he will restore the Dragon Balls so Piccolo's victims can be revived, there is a condition; that Goku will stay in the palace and train under him. Before dying, Piccolo created one last spawn, basically a clone of himself, containing all of his memories. This new Piccolo will appear at the next World Tournament to kill Goku, and so Goku must prepare himself until then. Goku agrees, and Kami reenergizes the Dragon Balls so the wish can be used immediately. Down on Earth, Goku's friends wish the fallen back to life, and learn from the Dragon God that Goku will return at the next tournament.\

Everyone begins their training, but Kami doesn't tell Goku that being two halves of the same whole means that if Piccolo dies, he will die as well...\

THREE YEARS LATER\

The Dragon Ball gang reunites at the tournament stadium, now looking more like adults, especially Goku, who has had a visible change in height. But there are unhappy reunions as well. Tao Pai Pai the assassin has returned, rebuilt as a cyborg. After defeating Chiaotzu in the preliminaries, he declares his intentions to take vengeance on Goku and Tien. But also appearing is Piccolo’s reincarnation, entering under the name Ma Junior. Tien realizes that Junior is an actual demon, but Goku convinces him not to say anything. With Roshi not entering as Jackie Chun, the finalists are Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Tao Pai Pai, Junior, and...\

An unnamed woman about Goku’s age. She seems to be interested in Goku, but becomes angry when he asks for her name.\

Hero, a total goofball who apparently won his matches by accident. But Yajirobe, who entered in disguised and lost, wonders just how lucky Hero is...\

QUARTERFINALS\

Tien vs Tao Pai Pai: Ex-master and ex-pupil duel, and it becomes apparent that Tien has all but surpassed the cyborg. Even with his cybernetics, Tao can’t touch the triclops. Getting impatient, Tao takes off his hand to reveal a hidden cannon in the wrist-- the Super Dodon Ray! But even at pointblank, the ray doesn't do anything to Tien. Tien trounces Tao Pai Pai handily, and sends him and Master Shen away.\

Goku vs Anonymous: The unnamed woman attacks relentlessly, but Goku dodges with ease. When asked why she's so upset at him, the woman claims that Goku promised to marry her, but never showed up! Everyone is shocked to hear this, and Goku is confused, as he has no idea what marriage is! He defeats her handily, and Anonymous reveals who she is; It's Chi-Chi, the daughter of the Ox King, who Goku met on the first Dragon Ball hunt! Looking back, Goku realizes that he did make a promise to Chi-Chi, but at the time assumed it was about food. Regardless, Goku decides to keep his word and agrees to marry Chi-Chi, much to the glee of the crowd, and stupefaction of his friends.\

Krillin vs "Ma Junior": Although Piccolo Jr. is confident, Krillin proves he's more than a "Nothing" with his skill, clever tactics, and mastery of martial arts. However, Junior's strength and abilities make him more than a match for the monk. As their fight takes to the air, Krillin tries to fake Piccolo out with an After Image. Piccolo isn't fooled and hammers him down to the ring. Although he gets back up, Krillin forfeits the match.\

Yamcha vs Hero: Yamcha starts out confident that he can finally get past the quarterfinals, but finds himself unable to overcome Hero's clumsiness. Soon, Hero drops the act and begins wiping the floor with Yamcha, chiding him for making assumptions. Yamcha tries using a mentally-directed Spirit Ball, but still loses. However, Hero notes that he's damaged the body he was borrowing...\

Goku makes an astonishing connection. Hero must be Kami incognito! After the match, Goku confronts "Hero", and Kami explains that he came because he feels Goku cannot defeat Piccolo Jr.; Mr. Popo told Goku about Kami and the Demon King’s connected lifespans, and now Goku won't be able to fight with all his might. Goku insists that he can beat Piccolo without killing them, but Kami has other plans...\

SEMIFINALS\

Goku vs Tien: The rematch begins with the two fighters apparently even. But Roshi notes that Goku is barely winded by their clash, while Tien is breathing heavily. Tien concedes that Goku has improved, but still lacks the speed to win. Agreeing, Goku takes off his boots, wrist bands, and undershirt. Much to everyone’s shock, these items are immensely heavy! Now lighter, Goku can easily outrun Tien, but the triclops is not ready to lose yet. He has one more technique to reveal; Splitting into four bodies! At first, it seems that Goku will be overwhelmed by the numbers, but the fighter reveals that Tien's style has two flaws. He demonstrates the first weakness by performing the Solar Flare, blinding Tien four times over- He relied too much on his vision, and those three eyes are too good. The second weakness is that the four bodies only have a quarter of Tien's original strength. Goku defeats Tien by ring-out.\

"Hero" vs "Ma Junior": In disguise, Kami and Junior square off. Although they appear to be equal, Kami is worried about Piccolo's strength, even taking in account the limitations of his borrowed body. Piccolo wonders about ‘borrowed’, leading Kami to berate him in a secret language for reading his mind. The audience becomes confused when "Hero" and "Ma Junior" start having a shouting match in code. Kami declares his intent to defeat Piccolo but Piccolo points out that their lives are connected, and in horror wonders if Kami will kill himself. But Kami has an alternative. He pulls out a small bottle, and begins to perform the Mafuba! But sadly, Piccolo reverses the move, and begins to seal away Kami. Before he can be trapped, Kami frees the human he possessed, and begs Goku to finish Piccolo.\

Once he awakens, Hero (or the person Kami used to create that identity) runs away from the arena, unable to understand how he got there. Meanwhile, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chi-Chi and Roshi confront Goku over what just happened. Goku fills them in on Kami, Piccolo, and their history. They determine that Piccolo came to the tournament to confront Goku because the reborn Demon King fears Goku in some way. Piccolo appears to confirm, in his arrogant way, that Goku DOES pose a threat to his conquest. Goku demands Piccolo hand over the bottle holding Kami, but Piccolo just swallows it. He gloats that Goku could kill him to retrieve the bottle, but that would kill Kami as well!\

FINAL MATCH\

Goku vs "Ma Junior": At first, both warriors appear equally matched, trading blows out at speeds that are almost impossible to keep up with. Goku at one point shoots a Kamehameha out from his feet to speed up his punch. After a near ring-out, Goku decides to use his trump card- The SUPER Kamehameha! However, wiping out Piccolo will kill Kami, but Krillin assures Goku that they can bring Kami back with the Dragon Balls. One massive beam later, Piccolo is...still there, only his hat and good temper are gone. The people see his antennas, and Piccolo reveals to all his true identity. Everyone except for Goku’s friends and the announcer flees. The fight resumes, and Piccolo enlarges himself to intimidate Goku. However, Goku continues to fight back, and taunts that Piccolo can't get any bigger.\

Piccolo, however, can and does increase in size, becoming absolutely gigantic. But now, he's big enough for Goku to go into his mouth and retrieve Kami's jar! With Kami free, Goku goes all out on Piccolo, even undeterred when Piccolo tries to unleash an explosion. But when Piccolo nearly lands a punch, Kami jumps in to block it, wanting to help Goku. Goku, however, insists that Kami not interfere with the match, and lets Piccolo have a free punch. While a bit shocked that Goku’s still thinking about the tournament, his friends accept that this is just who Son Goku is, and request that Kami let Goku have his way. The match resumes, and Goku manages to deliver a beat down that knocks Piccolo out. The Announcer does the count, but before he reaches ten, Piccolo blasts Goku with a sneak attack, seriously wounding him! Following up by breaking Goku's limbs in a deliberate echo of King Piccolo’s actions, Piccolo takes to the sky so as to obliterate his enemy completely. When the dust clears, Goku is nowhere to be found...but before Piccolo can turn his murderous eyes towards the rest, Krillin notices something heading at them. It's Goku! Having used the flight technique to pull his battered body away from Piccolo's blast, the wounded warrior plummets down to ram into the demon. Knocked unconscious, Piccolo lands outside the ring, making Goku the winner of the 23rd World Tournament!\

Yajirobe reveals himself to give Goku a Senzu Bean, allowing the hero to celebrate his win in full health. However, he notices Kami about to finishing Piccolo off and stops him, citing their linked lives. Kami insists that he can be revived by the Dragon Balls, but Goku has realized that the Dragon Balls are also linked to Kami's life, just as Piccolo is. Kami admits that he feels he doesn't deserve to live for bringing Piccolo into the world. But Roshi points out that by creating the Dragon Balls, Kami created the means to defeat Piccolo; Bulma's original search for the Dragon Balls caused her to meet Goku and set him on his journey to become the hero he is now. As Kami considers this, Goku unthinkably gives Piccolo a Senzu Bean! While this is in part because of his linked life with Kami, Goku also wants to have another match with Piccolo someday. Piccolo takes off swearing vengeance, while Goku looks forward to their next encounter. Kami decides that Goku should become his successor, but Goku declines. Kami's palace was too boring for him. Taking Chi-Chi, he boards the Flying Nimbus and flies off to live happily ever after.\

->Roshi: No, no, this isn't the end! Not by a long shot!

----
!!The Piccolo Jr. Arc has the following tropes
* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: Goku forgetting Chi-Chi made some level of sense in the manga since they had only met once almost seven years prior. The anime, however, throws in more filler scenes of Goku running into Chi-Chi and the Ox-King before the time skip.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: Piccolo does this during his fight against Goku but Goku exploits this tactic to retrieve Kami from with his stomach.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Hyper Explosive Demon Wave of Piccolo. Despite looking impressive, being an explosive attack in area means that Goku only directly receives a small part of the impact, in addition to leaving Piccolo almost completely drained.
* AwfulWeddedLife: When Goku asks him what a bride is, Krillin simply says that marriage means his life is over. Yamcha interjects to offer the basic definition, but Krillin insists his definition was more accurate.
* BeamOWar: One of the first ones in the series. Piccolo tries to blow the ring up, and Goku answers with a Super Kamehameha.
* BerserkButton: Related to TheBusCameBack: Goku, naturally doesn't remember who the young woman who appeared before him in the World Tournament, and because of this, she angrily calls him an idiot and storms off. This young woman is Chi-Chi (who withheld her name from the tournament officials), and it seemed to have pissed her off enough to improve her performance in the matches up until she fought Goku himself.
* BigBadWannabe: Tao Pai Pai returns as a cyborg to exact revenge on Goku and Master Shen's former students, Tien and Chiaotzu. But he's easily defeated by Tien.
* Breather Arc: While it still has some serious moments throughout, it's comparatively more relaxed than the arc before (King Piccolo Arc) and after (Saiyan Saga) it.
* BrokenPedestal: Tien admits to Tao Pai Pai that he no longer wants to follow in his footsteps as an assassin.
* TheBusCameBack: Chi-Chi hadn't been seen since the Pilaf Arc in the manga and finally shows up again six arcs later, though she did also make appearances during the Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo arcs in the anime.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Goku genuinely doesn't remember Chi-Chi or his promise to her, due to it being a number of years since they last saw each other.
* CallBack: Goku starts wearing weighted clothing in this arc. While taking it off, he points out it's basically identical to the turtle shells Master Roshi had him and Krillin wear during their training.
* CurbStompBattle:
** Although set up to be a dangerous adversary due to his already fearsome reputation (and the fact that he is cybernetically-enhanced now), Tao Pai Pai turns out to be completely helpless in his fight against Tien. The only reason this battle lasts longer than a few seconds is because Tien initially doesn't want to publicly humiliate his former master. When he loses the last ounce of respect towards him after being subjected to his dirty tricks, it takes Tien to strike Tao only once to knock him out cold.
** Successfully fooled by Hero's ObfuscatingStupidity, Yamcha thinks he's going to beat him easily. He is quickly proven very, very wrong -- and that's even before Hero actually starts treating the fight seriously. When he finally does, he proceeds to pretty much wipe the floor with Yamcha.
* CurbStompCushion: Krillin doesn't stand a chance against Piccolo Jr. the moment the latter takes off the gloves, but he still manages to lay in a few good shots due to his adversary's overconfidence. Tellingly, the fight with Krillin gives Piccolo Jr. the first clue that defeating his enemies and conquering the world will not be as easy as he'd thought it would be.
* DeathIsCheap: Although the previous arc established that AnyoneCanDie, this arc set the precedent that Shenron can simply revive the victims of the BigBad by having the dragon revive all of King Piccolo's victims. The previous life-restoring wish revived only one person.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When a storm destroys a clock tower that nearly crushes a boy and his mother Piccolo steps in and uses his powers to save them, showing he's not quite as ruthless and unfeeling as his father.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Master Shen still considers Goku and his friends Muten Roshi's students, even though Muten Roshi bluntly says they stopped being his disciples when they surpassed him. It would never occur to Master Shen that Muten Roshi respects his students and stepped down willingly to let them follow their own path, or his students show their respect for him by wearing his School's uniforms.
* FakeUltimateHero: In-between some matches, Piccolo mocks Goku as this. Instead of someone who saved the world in a do-or-die fight against his father, Piccolo says he was just a dumb kid who got lucky. Goku does actually wonder if this is true and if he's up to facing Piccolo. Of course, their fight is not remotely the cakewalk that Piccolo was expecting.
* FindOutNextTime: In the anime, this was done in the filler arc after the tournament. After their little adventure together, Goku and Chi-Chi get married, but the narrator wonders what will happen to them next. Baba uses her crystal ball to peer into the future and is intrigued by what she sees, though she won't let the viewers look.
-->Narrator: For the further adventures of Goku and his friends, be sure to watch Anime/DragonBallZ.
* FlatEarthAtheist: For some reason, every time Goku mentions he's off to see Kami ("God" in Japanese), his friends dismiss it as nonsense and say Kami doesn't exist. Quite strange, seeing as some of those are the same people who died the previous arc and got resurrected by a magical dragon that's summoned by collecting seven magical balls that were said by Master Roshi to have been created by the gods.
* Foreshadowing:
** Early in Goku and Anonymous' match, Master Roshi notes that the young woman's fighting style is similar to the Turtle School. That's because she is Chi-Chi, whose father Ox-King trained under Roshi.
** When Goku defeated Chi-Chi with kiai, Piccolo noted that the move reminded him of the techniques of his own "demon clan". It's likely he learned it from Kami.
** Piccolo and Kami begin talking to each other in an unknown language during their fight. This is a major hint toward the revelation that they're both Namekians in the Saiyan arc of Dragon Ball Z.
* FriendshipMoment: Krillin to Goku for all the effort that went into wishing him back to life.
* TheGadfly: Korin deliberately avoids telling Goku what Kami looks like because he knew how Goku would react upon seeing someone that looks like King Piccolo. An irritated Kami remarks he should've known Korin would pull this stunt.
* GodzillaThreshold: The reason why Kami resorted to possessing a mortal to enter the tournament. He just doesn't think Goku has what it takes to defeat Piccolo, so he resorted to this scheme.
* GrandFinale: For the original Dragon Ball series.
* GrandTheftMe: Kami possesses the body of a nerdy-looking fellow and uses him to infiltrate the tournament and try to seal Piccolo.
* HaveWeMet: During their fight, Goku asks this of Chi-Chi. It just makes her even angrier.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Piccolo enlarging himself in order to kill Goku backfires, since Piccolo becomes large enough that Goku is able to go into his mouth andretrieve the jar in which Kami is imprisoned without killing Piccolo.
* HopeSpot: After Piccolo wastes most of his remaining Ki on his Explosive Demon Wave, Goku is able to nail him with a series of devastating blows, culminating in him firing a Kamehameha right in Piccolo's face. As Piccolo is left seemingly unconscious in the hole created the announcer and Goku's friends start doing the ten-count for their friend. Suddenly Piccolo gets up and fires a mouth laser through Goku's shoulder, sending the fight to its final bloody stage.
* IKnewIt: While everyone else was shocked to learn Anonymous is Chi-Chi, this was Oolong's reaction. He figured it out during the fight, but decided to let the others figure it out for themselves, only hinting that he knew Bulma, Roshi, and Puar had all met her before.invoked
* IsItSomethingYouEat: It turns out Goku thought "marriage" was a kind of food, which is why he so eagerly agreed to it when they were younger. Though he also decides to be a man of his word, and agrees to marry Chi-Chi anyway.
* Kiai: How Goku defeated Chi-Chi. The Announcer noticed that Goku didn't actually hit her with his attack, and asked Roshi for an explanation. Roshi said Goku punched at her hard enough to send a shock wave that struck her as if she were hit.
* KidHeroAllGrownUp: Goku's friends are stunned to see that he hit a growth spurt since they saw him last and don't even recognize him at first. It takes removing a scarf and displaying his trademark hairstyle for them to truly believe it's him.
-->Goku: Funny, I remember you being a lot taller.\
Bulma: [surprised] And you used to be much shorter.
* KingIncognito: Strange variants from both Good and Bad: Kami posses a human to take part in the World Tournament to seal Piccolo away forever, and Piccolo himself takes his first appearance in what would be his classic outfit - A purple gi covered by a massive cape and a turban, going by the name "Ma Junior". Goku notably picked up both on the spot.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Krillin wisely gives up after Piccolo knocks him out of the air back into the ring during their fight. His stamina spent just barely surviving the impact.
* LighterAndSofter: Despite the threat of global domination posed by Piccolo and the infamously bloody injuries that Goku sustains in the latter part of his fight with Piccolo Jr, this arc is more lighthearted relative to the King Piccolo Arc which precedes it as it returns to the familiar tournament format, rather than the world-sprawling battle to save the world, and there are no deaths.
* MassOhCrap:
** When Piccolo reveals himself as the Great Demon King reborn, the crowd panics and flees.
** Played for laughs when Chi-Chi says Goku broke his promise that she'd be his bride. All of his friends stare with jaws dropped, though Goku is just confused over what a bride is.
* MeaningfulName: In the original manga, this is how Goku figured out Kami had possessed a human to enter the tournament; the identity of the human was "Shen", which means "god".
* MuggingTheMonster: Master Shen and Tao Pai Pai would be probably less eager to seek revenge against the Turtle School if they knew Goku killed King Piccolo, and Tien had already surpassed Tao Pai Pai by the time of the 22nd Tournament.
* NeckLift: Piccolo wins one of his preliminary matches by lifting his opponent by the throat and choking him out.
* NoSell:
** Kami tries the Evil Containment Wave on Piccolo but Piccolo manages to turn it against him.
** After Goku foils Piccolo's giant gambit, he gets really angry and unleashes a blast that destroys most of the island... Which Goku tanks with little to no visible damage. All Piccolo managed to do was waste a bunch of energy and leave himself open for a furious assault.
* NotJustATournament: This is the first tournament of the series that had the fate of the world at stake.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: While possessing Hero, Kami acts like this, making everyone think he's a clumsy guy... until they see him get serious against Yamcha. The only ones who aren't fooled are Yajirobe (who sees through the act) and Goku (who undoubtedly senses that "Hero" is far too powerful for someone so clumsy and luck-reliant).
* OhCrap:
** Tien's reaction to learning that Goku has been wearing weighted clothing and boots the entire time without missing a beat.
** Kami's plan is to trap Piccolo instead of kill him, but he admits he would gladly sacrifice himself to do the latter, which prompts this reaction from Piccolo.
* OnlyTheLeadsGetAHappyEnding: After Shenron is restored by Kami, Goku's friends initially ask him to just revive Krillin, Roshi, and Chiaotzu. However, Yamcha has them avert this trope by changing it to revive all the innocent people killed by King Piccolo. Luckily, Shenron agrees to it.
* PassingTheTorch: Subverted, Kami tries to name Goku the new God of Earth, but Goku refuses; Living in Kami's palace for three years was so boring that he can't stand the idea of living there for the rest of his life.
* PragmaticVillainy: Piccolo warns Krillin to just forfeit the match and walk away, as he doesn't want to waste any energy or reveal his capabilities prematurely.
* Revenge: Twofold: The Crane Hermit returns with his brother Tao, who has become a cyborg, intent on getting revenge on Goku for Tao's near death and Crane's wayward students. Tien easily bests Tao however and leaves the Crane School for good. And of course, Piccolo Jr. wants revenge for his father's defeat.
* ScarsAreForever: Tao detaches his prosthetic hand and reveals a blade he uses to slash Tien across his torso. This got him disqualified, but Tao insisted on getting his revenge on Tien and Goku. He is easily knocked out soon afterwards.
* SecretKeeper: Oolong briefly becomes this, as he was the first of the party to remember who Chi-Chi was. He played coy with it, only telling Roshi, Bulma, and Puar that they had met her before as well.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: Chi-Chi certainly blossomed since her younger days. Likewise a male example for Goku, lampshaded by Bulma when she sees him again.
* SmugSuper: Piccolo Jr. treats everyone he faces with contempt and condescension. Even concerning his GoodCounterpart Kami, he doesn't think much of him, especially after hiding his essence in Hero. The only person he takes seriously is Goku, who killed his father/previous incarnation. And even then, he gets increasingly furious when beating him isn't as easily as he thought it'd be.
* SoLastSeason:
** Kami's plan to end Piccolo's reign of terror once and for all was to use the Evil Containment Wave, the very technique that defeated his father in the past and would have spelled his doom again if not for bad luck on the heroes behave. Unfortunately for everyone involved Piccolo's training allowed him to figure out how to reverse the wave, ironically sealing Kami away instead.
** Having learned from his father's mistake in their last battle Piccolo makes sure to disable all of Goku's limbs including his arm so that he will seemingly have no way to dodge or block his final attack. While this would have been enough to kill Goku three years ago, Goku reveals his ace in the whole that he was saving in reserve; the flying technique. This allows Goku to dodge Piccolo's attack and land a headbutt which finally knock Junior out cold.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Krillin can't beat Piccolo, but he puts up more resistance than Junior was expecting and thus requires a larger show of force to defeat. Krillin even survives what could've been a deadly move. Piccolo starts to wonder if Goku is the only one standing between him and world domination.
* TakingYouWithMe: Discussed; Kami tells Piccolo that he's perfectly fine dying if it meant the world is safe from the Demon King's evil, and when Piccolo manages to trap Kami in a jar, he swallows it to keep Goku from getting it back, as ripping Piccolo open would do the same to Kami.
* ThirdTimesTheCharm: This is Goku's third attempt at a World Martial Arts Tournament and the first (and only) time he manages to win it.
* ThisCannotBe: Played for laughs when Krillin tries out Goku's weighted boots. He can't believe that Goku could walk in these things.
* TimeSkip: Set three years later, made evident by the fact Goku is now in his late teens.
* TournamentArc: Which fittingly enough closes out the first part of the series.
* TrashTheSet: Piccolo's Hyper Explosive Demon Wave obliterates the entire tournament arena, putting an end to the World Martial Arts Tournament for quite some time until it is eventually rebuilt much later in the series.
* WackyMarriageProposal: After Goku defeats Chi-Chi and she reveals who she is. Goku admits he didn't know what marriage meant back then. But, not wanting to break his promise to her, proposes to Chi-Chi right then and there.
* WeCanRebuildHim: Tao Pai Pai is revealed to have survived the grenade blast and was brought back as a cyborg.
* WhamLine: Chi-Chi both revealing what the promise was and then (after the match is over) her name.
* WhamShot: While it's been Foreshadowing foreshadowed in multiple ways earlier that Hero -- who previously seemed to be extremely goofy and inept, winning tournament battles solely thanks to pure dumb luck -- is stronger than he looks, it still comes to a shock when he suddenly displays the ability to do FlashStep against Yamcha, brutally knocking him to the ground in a single stroke. Everyone is left speechless (exluding Yajirobe, who wasn't fooled by Hero's act for one second), and Hero's goofy demeanor instantly disappears as he suddenly turns much more serious and threatening.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: When it's all over, Kami feels he's failed as a Guardian and doesn't deserve the title, as he couldn't even handle the monster he created. Roshi tells him different.
-->Roshi: How can you say such things, when it was you who brought our world peace again? If not for your training, Goku would never have attained the level of skill he has now. Junior would have won! And if the Dragon Balls hadn't been forged, none of these young warriors would have ever met. And I can't begin to count the number of people who owe their lives to these kids! When their quest began, they were just children. But they soon grew into heroes. When the world needed saving, eight kids answered the call. One ball; that's how it all began.\
Kami: Goku, you're fortunate to have such an excellent teacher.
