->''"There are seven chakras that go up the body. Each pool of energy has a purpose and can be blocked by a specific kind of emotional muck. Be warned: opening the chakras is an intense experience, and once you begin this process, you cannot stop until all seven are opened. Are you ready?"''
->''"...I'll do whatever it takes."''

After splitting up in the previous episode, the characters find themselves in uniquely separate situations:

Aang, meeting with Guru Pathik, goes under an intense training regimen designed to open his spiritual pathways and allow him to gain control of the Avatar State. Sokka, after two years, is finally reunited with his father. Toph, having been tricked and captured by Xin Fu and Master Yu, is being carted off back to her parents' estate. Katara is helping the Earth King and his generals plan for the invasion, unaware that Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee have infiltrated the city and are making plans to take over. And Zuko, after going through a long night of fever dreams and wrestling with his subconscious, has come out of the experience uncharacteristically serene.

!!Tropes:

* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: "Why would I choose cosmic energy over Katara? How could it be a bad thing that I feel an attachment to her? Three Chakras ago, that was a ''good'' thing!"
* BadassBoast: After she figures out Metalbending, Toph exclaims "I am the greatest Earthbender in the '''WORLD'''! Don't you two dunderheads ever forget it!" And then beats it out of there surfing on an earth wave.
* BarefootCaptives: Toph. Granted, she's ''always'' barefoot, but she's never been captive before now.
* BathroomSearchExcuse: Toph tries to trick Xin Fu and Yu into letting her out by telling them she needs to use the bathroom. They don't fall for it.
* TheBigBoard: The Earthbender Generals and strategists plan the invasion of the Fire Nation on a huge board (to which Momo ends up messing up the pieces).
* TheBodyPartsThatMustNotBeNamed: Out of all the chakras, the location of the water chakra is never mentioned, only that it deals with pleasure. This is because it's strongly associated with the sexual and reproductive organs.
* ChekhovsSkill: Toph uses Seismic Sense to detect the earth in order to metal-bend her cage.
* ClipShow: Aang's lessons cleverly use older clips and recontextualizes them into representing his various fears, doubts and problems that block him from properly unlocking the Avatar State.
* ExactWords: Done in a heartwarming manner. When Sokka's father says "the rest of you men get ready for battle", Sokka asks what he should do. Turns out Sokka's father was referring to him too, meaning he sees his son as a man and expects him to participate in the battle with the rest of them.
* ExtraOreDinary: Toph invents Metalbending.
* HeadDesk: Xin Fu bangs his head against the wall of his and Yu's new metal prison after Yu mentions that he has to go to the bathroom.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Long Feng made a big mistake trusting ''Azula'', of all people.
* InternalReveal: Azula and her squad learn about the eclipse and the invasion that day.
* IronicEcho:
-->'''Xin Fu:''' ''(to Toph)'' You might think you're the greatest earthbender in the world, but even ''you'' [[TemptingFate can't bend metal!]]\
''(After she figures out [[ExtraOreDinary Metalbending]])''\
'''Toph:''' I AM THE GREATEST EARTHBENDER IN THE WORLD! Don't you two dunderheads ever forget it!
** Another one comes from Azula's line about how terrible it must be that you can't even trust in those closest to you. Flash forward to season 3 [[spoiler: when Mai and Ty Lee betray Azula, which starts Azula's own SanitySlippage]]. This may have been intentional, as [[{{Foreshadowing}} Mai and Ty Lee look at each other briefly]] when Azula makes that claim.
* LockedUpAndLeftBehind: Once Toph escapes her metal cell, she shoves Xin Fu and Yu into it and deforms the cell (which they could barely fit in) so they're stuck inside. And Yu has to pee.
* LoveIsAWeakness: Pathik tells Aang that the key to unlocking the last Chakra is to set aside all attachments, which Aang believes includes his love for Katara. He begins to hesitate and, when he leaves to save Katara, the guru warns him about this:
--> '''Guru Pathik''': By choosing attachment, you have locked the Chakra! If you leave now you won't be able to go into the Avatar State ''at all''!
* MeditatingUnderAWaterfall: Aang takes lessons from Guru Pathik in front of a waterfall.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: While trying to release the final chakra Aang lets in cosmic energy and feels that Katara is in trouble. This leads him to leave his training and head back to Ba Sing Se.
* NextTierPowerUp: Toph is being carried away, back to her parents, where she will be undoubtedly placed under even '''''more''''' restrictions than before she'd run away, in a metal container. Using her [[DisabilitySuperpower unique abilities to locate the earth elements within the metal]], she is able to manipulate it and break out, discovering the art of "Metalbending".
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Katara sees Zuko serving tea and instantly runs to inform the authorities. If she had investigated further, confronted him herself or thought about the situation for more than a second, [[spoiler: Zuko never would have been put in a position to turn to Azula's side to begin with.]] (And Aang probably would have finished his last chakra.)
** A far worse case is with the Earth King, as he foolishly blabs about the military invasion intended against the Fire Nation to what he thinks are the Kyoshi Warriors [[spoiler: but in reality are Azula and her posse in disguise. Even not factoring in the disguise, telling people you don't know about this kind of operation so casually was an exceptionally stupid decision on his part.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Toph's captors taunt her, saying that despite being the world's greatest Earthbender, even ''she'' can't bend ''metal.'' Toph's response? She invents Metalbending on the spot and breaks free.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Azula with Long Feng. While she doesn't pretend to be a complete idiot, she doesn't let Long Feng see her true intelligence and ruthlessness just yet.
* OhCrap: Katara's expression when she finds out the Kyoshi Warriors she informed were really Azula and her QuirkyMinibossSquad.
** Azula has a subdued one upon learning about the invasion plan. She recovers very quickly, both keeping composure and coming up with a plan of her own.
* PsychoticSmirk: Azula puts a subtle one on in the final shot as she's being led away by the Dai Li, knowing that Long Feng is playing right into her hands.
* RuleOfSymbolism: The locations of Aang's lessons with Guru Pathik gradually move higher and higher up the Eastern Air Temple, starting in a cave and ending atop the highest tower under the starry sky, illustrating the steps in his spiritual journey of opening himself up to the cosmic energy of the universe.
* ShippedInShackles: Xin Fu and Master Yu stick Toph in a metal box to transport her back to her parents.
* ShownTheirWork: In addition to the Avatar-world chakras roughly corresponding to their real element, locations, and responsibilities, Aang and Guru Pathik are also shown making the proper hand symbols for each chakra during meditation.
* StagingTheEavesdrop: The first part of Azula's BatmanGambit to take over Ba Sing Se.
* StressVomit: Sokka mentions feeling nauseous due to his nerves of finally seeing his dad again.
* SymbolicBlood: After Ty Lee chi-blocks Katara, the water that Katara was bending from her waterskin spreads out on the floor like a pool of blood.
* TailorMadePrison: Toph gets trapped in a steel cage, with her captors convinced that she can't escape because she can't bend metal. However, it does help her develop her new ability to [[ExtraOreDinary metalbend]].
* TemptingFate: Xin Fu mocks Toph that "You might ''think'' you're the greatest earthbender in the world, but even ''you'' can't bend metal!" It takes a while but, after discovering traces of earth in her steel prison she can use, she proceeds to manipulate the walls and finally break out. With this, she invents a new form of ''metal''bending before busting out and putting her captors in. She then proclaims that she is ''indeed'' "the greatest earthbender in the world".
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Sokka takes one look at Aang after he returns early and comments that this can't be a good sign.
* TookALevelInKindness: Zuko, after coming out of his AngstComa. He's also a lot more optimistic and cheerful. Given what comes afterwards however, it's [[StepfordSmiler strongly implied that this behavior is not entirely natural.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: We never find out what happened to Xin Fu and Master Yu once Toph locks them and runs away again. [[spoiler: It's later revealed they somehow escaped and gave up their search for Toph, as well when Toph's father made a HeelFaceTurn.]]
* WholePlotReference: Aang's training with Guru Pathik is largely a {{homage}} to ''[[Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back]]'', right down to Aang leaving before his training is complete because he senses his friends are in danger.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: The Earth King tells the disguised Azula about their plans to invade the Fire Nation on a solar eclipse, [[spoiler:which results in the plan's failure in the next season]].
* YouGetMeCoffee: Subverted when Sokka's father hands out orders to his men to get ready for battle. When he comes to Sokka, the latter expects some minor task to be handed to him, but it turns out he is supposed to sail out together with the rest of the men.
